Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

First console-specific retro thread to reach OT2?

Blast processing confirmed.

Sonic is just too fast.

I think the OT2 thread title should somehow reference the terrible job SEGA does with keeping the Genesis/MD legacy alive. They keep shitting out shit ass mini consoles and shit ass ports to shit ass systems while the SNES continues to get the respect it deserves.

Dude yes

SF2 improves on almost everything from SF1, the only thing I like better in SF1 is the art style (but it's still good in SF2 and the spritework is glorious).
Yeah, I definitely need to get that one before it gets too pricey.

Shining Force 2 drags on a bit when you get to North Parmecia and has too many battles and characters. Otherwise it's an improvement over the first game. SF3 is perfect though.
Shame that it's insanely pricey now.

SEGA has been doing compilation discs for consoles and selling its ROMs on various digital distribution platforms for years while Nintendo sat on their back catalogue doing nothing.

And they all vary in quality. Look at their recent efforts on mobile or the garbage at games is putting out. My point is when Nintendo releases something in that vein they do it right and I really wish SEGA would do the same.

Im not trying to start a pissing war!

The Game Gear emulation on the 3DS VC is amazing. It's such a big contrast when you compare with Nintendo's own offers on the very same system.

Yeah, but at least they existed. They have been keeping their legacy alive for more than a decade now, while in the mean time we had one thread per month asking why Nintendo doesn't sell their old games on Steam or the app store.

[edit]And seeing how Nintendo deals with their stocks, stopping production after a couple of months, I would hardly call it "right".

Yet again, really impressive how efficient his code is. It also shows how these scene drew a lot of inspiration from the Amiga demo scene.

The hell is Discord? A brief internet search shows that it is a videogame VOIP service. Am I looking in the wrong place?

I'd be interested if it was just a normal forum, but discord sounds like something I'd never want to use. You can't just casually post stuff at your own leisure can you? It's more of a chat-room thing if I have it right. Right?

I don't think I've ever subscribed so fast to a videogame youtube channel. MAYBE Extra Credits. Maybe.

Thank you so much for this. I'll be binge watching his videos this weekend.

Anything new in the Genesis world or has everyone migrated?

All of the cool kids are still here mate. Only the peasant swarm have migrated into the Venus flytrap of the other forum.

There's a Genesis dev in our midst (Xeno Crisis) and once I'm done with my current project on the C64, I'll be developing on the Mega Drive.

Very nice. I'm still a super early backer on Papirum and have been waiting for ages on that one. This one looks good, so I'll probably get in on that.

Miss the monthly play throughs on here

Hi Guys !
I've finally put my hands on a multi tap + everdrive and tried a lot o 4 players games successfully like:

Mega Bomberman
Tiny Toon All Star
Yu Yu Hakusho

However my main goal is to play Collumns 3 with my friends but I tried a lot of combinations without success :(

Do you guys know if there a special config/pattern to play Collumns 3?

If you're asking "why can't I get my Genesis multitap working on Columns III?" then YES! I have your answer because I dealt with this in the past.

Take your multitap and plug the 'Control 1' plug into the Genesis controller port 2. Weird, I know, but that's how to get it working. I forget if there's a difference between Extra and Multi but I think Multi is the one that works.

You also need to have a controller in the first controller port, per the usual. The multitap activates players 2 - 5.

Question: What are your ten favorite Sega Genesis games?

I am working on a book project on the definitive list of Sega Genesis, as voted by the fans. I've been compiling data from every available online source, including blogs, articles and forums. I have passed through the NeoGAF archives but I wanted to be sure I had everybody's up-to-date lists.

Here's how it works. You write down a list of ten favorite Genesis videogames. Each of the ten positions will be scored points: First Place earns 10 points, Second Place earns 9 points, and so on. The final database will include categories for Points, Votes and Number Ones, which has resulted in a number of interesting variations.

You can also share your Genesis Top Ten "in no particular order." In that event, all ten places will earn 5.5 points each. I would prefer the numbered ranking (especially for the Number Ones category), but I understand if you are unable to pick a favorite.

At the time of this post, my Sega Genesis database includes 381 titles, with 108 "Number Ones." It's a very good list with a very wide variety of games, something for everybody. I was really impressed by some fans' favorite Genesis games.

ProTips:

- Sonic 3 & Knuckles counts as one videogame.

- All domestic and foreign titles are eligible.

- Indie titles are eligible. Pier Solar earned quite a few votes, in fact.

- Compilation carts, such as Sega's 6-in-1, are out.

- Sega CD and 32X are not included.

- A personal plea: please don't just pick the same franchise titles over and over. Try to dig a little deeper. Which games do you really love playing today, and which ones did you and your friends really love playing back in the day? Pick an underdog or a hidden gem.

My Sega Genesis Top Ten:

1. NHL 94
2. Streets of Rage 2
3. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
4. Herzog Zwei
5. Thunder Force 3
6. Gaiares
7. Fire Shark
8. Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
9. Strider
10. Super Monaco GP

Mmmm. Good taste, sir.

I am a huuuuuge shmup fan (but you probably already knew that from the Saturn thread), so I feel the compulsion to grill you a bit if you don't mind.

Gaiares? Top-notch choice. Not a lot of folks know this one, but it's definitely one of the best Genesis shmups.

Fire Shark and Thunder Force 3 are both interesting choices. Why not -- in the place of Fire Shark -- Truxton, Twin Cobra, Twin Hawk, or Flying Shark? Fire Shark is exceptional, but so are all the other Toaplan games, so I'm curious as to why you like it enough to put it into your Top 10.

And Thunder Force 3 instead of the superior Lightening Force (TF4)? How dare you, sir! Also curious to hear your thoughts on that one. I prefer TF4, but I still like TF3 so much that I own it's roundabout remake Thunder Spirits on SNES, too. I think that version has an even better soundtrack than the Genesis version, in case you haven't given it a spin. Different system than the topic at hand, but Thunder Force transcends the boundaries between console wars...

Thanks for the fun conversation starter. Wonder if other posters will add their lists, too.

All of the game you have mentioned are excellent and all Sega Genesis fans should be playing them on a regular basis. For my Top 10, I decided to choose the videogames that I played and enjoyed when they were new. Thunder Force 3 was a sensational rush for me in the Winter of 1990, and that was at the time when Genesis was really coming into its own, before the arrival of the Super Nintendo and the real 16-bit war. I often preferred those early years the most. Same goes for Fire Shark and Gaiares, of which I was very proud to own and played endlessly (even if I needed to rely on the cheat codes for Garaires).

Thunder Force 4 was always a bit of a mixed bag for me, at least the US "Lightening Force" that was released in the States. It's a spectacular game and a Technosoft classic, but I was often frustrated by the slowdown that would frequently occur. The early stages also lack the immediacy and punch that TF3 and Garares provided. It really hits its stride at the mid-point, however, and once your ship receives its subwoofer upgrade, TF4 is on fire. I especially loved the volcanic stage, with rocky terrain in the foreground and the line-scrolling waves in the background. The final boss battle was another spectacular highlight.

I can certainly understand why TF4 remains so popular today; in fact, it was voted the most popular shoot-em-up on the Genesis once all the polling data was compiled, which was a nice surprise.

I ought to follow this by saying that Technosoft reissued TF4 on Sega Saturn on the Thunder Force Gold Pack series, and that's the definitive version to play. Why? Absolutely no slowdown whatsoever. I think Genesis fans who took advantage of the slower moments to dodge enemy bullets will find themselves overwhelmed here. Apart from overclocking your Genesis console (and why hasn't that been done on the emulators?) this is the best way to play.

I never liked Thunder Spirits on the Super NES, but to be honest, I hated the idea of my beloved Genesis masterpiece on Nintendo's system. Of course, I owned both systems and loved them equally, but at different times. When one system dragged, the other soared.

Sorry for the bump but I am shocked anyone would mention Hellfire on these boards!!! It was my very first Shmup on anything!

Now I don't honestly like Shmups BECAUSE of Hellfire but I still have a soft spot for the game simply for having an Amazing Stage 1 and 2 theme (Stage 2 is the furthest I got to) and the fact that some of the Developers made CAVE from the Ashes.

It totally stands out as a different shmup and I think it deserves a sequel with the CAVE Treatment (w/o the Bullet Hell segments).

Has anyone Kickstarted XenoCrisis? I havw and it looks pretty great as a Smash TV-esque alternative with inspiration from Alien and possibly Alien Syndrome.

Savaged Regime is doing the Tracks for the game as the guy is talented in manipulating the Sound chip to the Mega Drive/Genesis to either improve songs to games such as Sonic/Golden Axe and making excellent Conversions such as one the Pokemon Themes in Gold/Silver!

Recommend checking it out as it will also be on the Switch/PS4 and Neo Geo (if you are one of the lucky ones to own it and have games for it!)

Hellfire was also one of my first shmups. My buddy and I would take turns on the Genesis version trying to get as far as we could. Switching the direction of your shots is pretty blasé by today's standards but back then it seemed unique.

Awesome! Did you ever use the Turbo Button to see what happened? XD (I did it and even though I didn't get far, it was fun to see how the game reacts)

I think a Turbo Button Challenge is warrented just to see how far someone can go in it.

The only Shmup I ever beat is ironically Touhou (Imperishable Night). I couldn't one Credit it but I did do the game in 2 continues, so I have an incredible soft spot for the Series that made me feel good at the game.

I got my brother DunDunDunpachi Resurrection and managed to beat it (he doesn't play those games much but I found it cheap). I recognise your name! :)

No, when I was a kid I didn't have access to a turbo controller. I do own the game and a Genesis so I'll have to try it out.

I think you mean "Dodonpachi", but yes my name is a riff on that.

Resurrection is a great title. Nowadays it goes for a lot of $$$.
