tbh idk why but I really expected it to have way more of a neo-noir feel than it does, but people are saying this is very true to the pnp game, so what the hell do I know

And ? You need to point me out that i am wrong or something ? No i am not wrong. It is frankly hilarious that you even argue such fucking dumb argument that if there is sunny day then this is poor cyberpunk or something.

Settle down. Almost every post you've made is some variation of 'you're all dumb cunts' simply because most people aren't familiar with the (rather obscure) source material, versus the genre. Just because you might be right in that regard, doesn't give you a pass on acting out.

As regards Cyberpunk PnP. I'll be honest, Pondsmiths approach to cyberpunk has always been 'these dials go up to 11' which isn't to everyone's taste. I'm just happy to be getting an open world Cyberpunk game. Less thrilled about the endless mohawks aspects though.

It was a solid showing and I trust in the creative talent of CDPR but that trailer didn't click with me. I was hoping for a darker aesthetic. Plus my emotional attachment to the Witcher series and the characters therein are tainting my expectations, but I didn't see anything to sway me otherwise. I kinda wish that Geralt made a surprise cameo at the end to suggest that new adventures will be had next-gen.

I'll remain open minded and buy a copy on day one anyway because, well, CDPR can do no wrong. Bring on 2019!

The trailer was awesome, I love the music, the colors, the environment. Getting Blader runner vibes from it and overall slight 80’s sci fi vibe from it. I know it’s really early to get hyped for a non game play trailer ... but it’s CDProjekt.

I notice the scene where the person hooked up by a cable to the machine reminded me a bit of The Matrix and Bruce Willis Surrogates movie.

EDIT: Forgot the add, really love how it was introduced at the end as a surprise.

I was arguing that when people hear cyberpunk, they expect blade Runner and film noir. That's just the way it is.

William Gibson then can eat a dick then. While his work is great he isn't the one who says what something is or isn't cyberpunk. Probably he never ever heard of Cyberpunk PnP in first place.
Yeah, but when there is so much people saying something doesn't look like they expected, even renowned authors of the genre, don't you think that maybe there is a possibility that they kinda have a point?

Ok then what did you expect ?
I expected forum moderation to at least warn users who disrespect others.

As someone who considers a few people who were sporting a mohawk at some point in the past as friends, I agree with the last statement. Mohawks are a bit too tryhard these days.

Regarding the source material, I did like the "everything dialed to 11", since I considered it a parody to media that always plays up the importance of mildly interesting events. But maybe I'm giving Pondsmith too much credit? Not sure after the train wreck that was v3 of the cyberpunk rpg. Our group had switched to a different system at the time and had no intention of suffering from a monochrome green rulebook layout from hell.

Just thought of a new one : "looks like Saints Row modded to give everyone Mohicans"

Just joking. I get that the two trailers taking together without a background reading and fan-forum deep-dive do give a confusing or misleading impression. I feel that too.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that CDProjecKt stated a while back that there wasn't even anything even resembling a game when that first trailer was released. They pretty much just had the license and knocked up a trailer to announce it, so beyond a few nods to the PnP game in terms of setting there not a lot to read into it in terms of gameplay etc.

And who is Mike Pondsmith ? some random dude ? He made one of the most popular PnP setting which shitload of people played and even wrote books about.

Because calling someone dense after repeadly asking him to check source is now some great slur.

Please, Cyberpunk is no D&D in terms of an audience so quit working yourself up as if everyone should know about it, and the fact that a great many people haven't is some crime against humanity.

What part of the rules here don't you get? The rules themselves or that you are expected to adhere to them? No ones coming here to be insulted.

Feel free to double down though. That always goes well for people in my experience.

I don't know, but even by RPG standards Cyberpunk 2020 was always a bit niche. Even at RPG conventions it was never easy to find many who played it (and believe me I've tried). Most popular are probably DnD, World of Darkness and Pathfinder, respectively local heroes like The Dark Eye/Das Schwarze Auge in Germany. According to the sales stats over at DrivethruRPG, Genesys seems to be the hot new kid in town.

Where do they find these idiots?

Games journalists man lol.

The other day I was watching a Giant Bomb quicklook for Detroit Become Human. The girl they have on GB now drives me nuts because when no one is speaking, you can almost hear her trying to think of questions to ask the person playing the game, and they just don't feel like questions she even cares about.

At one point she literally asks the player "So where is this set in the US? Oh wait....nevermind." When you read this, it might come across like she meant it as a joke. Nope, it was a 100% sincere games journalist inquiry.

Like just shut the fuck up and let me watch this dude play the game.

What makes this setting cool and different is that there is no moral battle here. It is not Blade Runner or other from genre where authors try to look at fight between small and big, wealthy and poor.
This setting (at least 2020) is literally one big soup of people who want to trample one another in rising to the top and they will make everything they can to show everyone else they are the fucking most "gangsta" of them all, trample on everyone, poor, rich as long as it gets them to the top.

Uhm... my friend, you might want to dial your zealotry back a little bit. First, you're barking up the wrong tree. Second, it seems to make you prone to personal attacks and incoherent babbling. If you think that aggressively challenging other people will make them any more sympathetic towards the trailer, you're simply delusional. The mass market doesn't give a rat's rear about which obscure DnD franchise the game is built upon. They have their own subjective notions of cyberpunk and like it or not, it's something that you may not agree with, but should at least be able to respect.

Aggressively challenging consumerism, corporatism and bourgeois social conventions by living 'off the grid' is the very definition of Punk. Furthermore, the thematic depth does not arise from the Hobbesian context of cyberpunk itself, but through the juxtaposition with the audience's own lived reality and their moral views. It's what made the Witcher series so great in the first place and it's what I'm expecting from their next project too. To be thrown into a ruthless world that confronts you with dilemma situations that challenge your own ethic preconceptions and face you with difficult decisions. Like, how is the very notion of a "dog eat dog" world not a moral question in and of itself? If you look at the trailer, it's pretty evident that the class struggle is very real and that they will certainly expand on that.

If you just want to be a jacked badass punk with an interlink port in a leather jacket that 'stylishly' puts the boot on people's faces, that's fine, but other people might like to engage with these stories in a more in-depth manner. Nothing what you said really contradicts what I said about the thematic context of cyberpunk. So lay off the vitriol!

There is an interview with Mike Pondsmith in what looks to be Cyberpunk 2077's official youtube channel, and the images they use while describing the game are night time in a big city, with city lights, billboards, dark alleys... what you normally would expect for the genre.

I don't know why they chose to do the trailer the way they did it.

I mean I don't see why one counters the other. Both those themes can exist. Yes the trailer did feature a lot of day time crazy scenes, but the one night time scene they showed us was similar to what you're talking about

Also I feel you, the themes of the last CGI trailer kind of made me expect something different, and I kinda wish they never bothered making that now because it kinda left me more confused and jaded about this trailer. I had to force my self to get past it and appreciate this for what it is and not what they tried to sell in 2015

I just started playing the Witcher 3 again and my hype for this game immediately shot through the roof. CDPR just knows how to make games.

Yeah, I'm still not thrilled with the trailer, but I think they intentionally wanted to break from convention which is fine. The part that bothers me is not that this doesn't feel like the Night City I would have imagined (again OK), but that you have the PC in the trailer saying how Night City is considered the worst place to live, but then proceed show a clean and bright future city-scape. Just didn't seem to fit.

Word on the street is this is a FPS RPG? That's not what I was expecting.

Here's some live footage right now too:

I hope that was a mistake on his part when he said FPS, because I prefer 3rd person generally with the option to go FPS occasionally (especially if driving is involved). Still some more deets in that twitter feed.

Good to know that background choices have some impact and you're not a blank slate.

First person? Interesting. Didn't expect that. Not sure I like it either, but will wait to see more.

THANK GOD it's FPS, my greatest fear was having another shitty offcentered camera, which basically makes games unplayable for me (Witcher 3 was saved by modders).

TBH I was expecting 1st person and custom character (actually, I was totally sure of custom character), because one of the main (DUMB) complaints people had about Witcher 3 was it wasn't like Skyrim.

GOD I'm so happy it's first person.

I looked up more information about the game and watched the trailer a couple more times and am starting to enjoy the setting. But, given the city is called night city, I can help but think that at one point during development they might have considered making the city permanently at night or mostly night time with some excuse.

  • First person perspective RPG (Described as a a first and foremost a role playing game with shooter elements)
  • Narrative driven
  • V is a urban higher mercenary, can be male or female.
  • V is voiced
  • Full character creation system, different body types, hair styles tattoos
  • No classes at the start of the game
  • You modify and adjust your class based on how you build you character
  • Game has noir vibes
  • Full day and night cycle with weather systems
  • Set in the fictional Night City
  • Handcrafted city
  • Working closely with Mike Pondsmith, aspects of the 2020 rulebook is tied into the game.
  • Examples: you can have bits of the roles of a Techy and Netrunner with your character.
  • Ranged and melee combat. 3 main weapon types, Power Weapons, Tech Weapons, and Smart weapons, weapons that track and follow targets.
  • Vehicles: Drivable Cars and Motorcycles
  • Enterable buildings with multiple floors, such as mega buildings, these have vendors, apartments etc.
  • Two forms of experience, gained from completing core missions and "street cred" from side missions.
Street creds allow you to unlock different vendors and "fixers" who give you different jobs to do.

Well since it's going to have melee I am glad that it's going to be in first person(while in third person during cutscnes) as Witcher 3 did not have good 3rd person gameplay(from what I have heard). I do hope that their gameplay is good in first person

It's called Night City due the name of the founder.

I took some notes from the IGN interview: -

  • FP because they are going for immersion in the world.
  • FP..but, not a FPS it is a RPG with shooter elements.
  • Deep progression system. Sounds like a combo of skills, equipment and cybernetic enhancements.
  • The player takes on the role of V, a hardened male/female urban mercenary who takes on tough assignments.
  • Despite being in FP, you get full character customisation in terms of your look. I guess you see yourself in cutscenes/cinematics in places...as in TW3.
  • How you definite your lifepath (backstory) dictates your starting abilities etc, however, the game isn't following the PNP game in terms of you having a starting class, so you're not locked into a particular progression route. A more fluid approach.
  • Use of daytime in trailer was a deliberate choice to demonstrate range, as they already know they can do the BR moody nighttime look.
  • Emphasis is on Noir as the game itself in terms of story, missions, tone etc and not just look.
  • Full day/night and weather systems
  • A lot of lore aspects from CP 2020 PnP lore and some characters in the game. In terms of the classes, although they aren't going with classes for PnP fans they are taking a lot of leads from the 'Net Runner' 'Techie' & 'The Solo'in terms of skill pools/abilities though it's not exclusive. You'll encounter 'Rockerboy' and 'Corporate' archetypes as NPCs.
  • Lots of lessons learnt from Witcher 3 in terms of Choice and consequence. Big emphasis on storytelling and RPG.
  • Not a save the world story.
  • Ranged and Melee combat. Obviously Melee FP required a rethink of how things were done in TW3.
  • 3 main weapon types. Power. Tech and Smart weapons, the latter will be more track and follow type weapons.
  • Combat will cater towards those who want a bit of twitch.
  • Vehicles. Motorbikes and cars for sure. No commitments on other vehicles just yet so flying cars might be strictly moving wallpaper/set pieces
  • V is voiced
  • Background and interaction choices will shape V as a character (presumably in how characters react to you).
  • Night City heavily inspired by LA, San Diego & San Franciso.
  • City divided into 6 unique districts.
  • Emphasis on verticality to the environments with megabuildings that have multiple usages.
  • No level scaling. Standard experience and street cred. Different missions garner different amounts. Street cred gives you access to certain people etc like mission givers (fixers) as you progress.

I love this. It sounds like it could be the way we want Fallout games to be, but in this insane setting.

Some more from the IGN story :
  • You can engage in combat while driving -- AI took over steering as you lean out the window and shoot at enemies
That's helpful.

Also. On a personal note. Fuck FPS, Fuck My LIfe, LOL.

First person is a huge disappointment for me but if there is any developer I trust it's those guys. I hope we get to see some gameplay soon. Maybe on Gamescom.

Strange way of showing it, given the trailer's vibe. Anyway, were's the damn gameplay footage.

don't judge too quickly because it's FPS

didn't most people hated Witcher 3's gameplay anyway ?? so even if Cyberpunk 2077 is FPS with the same quests design as Witcher 3 it's still gonna be a masterpiece

my only concern is the world and setting, it's the reason why i wasn't so hyped like others, i hate SCI-FI games, but i trust CDPR and Cyberpunk 2077 to be an exception like Halo
