PlayStation VR Thread 2: Reloaded

Haven't watched any footage yet but my overall feeling is disappointed. I'm looking forward to some general VR gaming "state of the union" discussion once the show has ended and people have cooled off a little. I still really enjoy VR gaming but I don't feel the enthusiasm is there from the platform holders. Honestly that's fine with me if it's a bit of a slow build... I'd just really not want to see it peter out before it gets a chance in the spotlight, for real. I am kinda blaming Sony and their subordinates for what happened with Inpatient and Bravo Team (both titles sound undercooked in order to rush to market)... well this is what happens. Obviously there's more to it than that, but that really hasn't helped.
On the upside, as a tiny indie developer I'm genuinely curious to dip my toes into the marketplace. I've been slowly working on a VR project that would be a good fit for the store. As it's not overrun with competition, even if I don't make bank with the thing (or close to that) it feels like it would be a worthwhile opportunity for some reasons. I'll have to see how far I can get with that (maybe they are not even very interested in putting much indie stuff up there in general these days, I've no idea..)

E3 report! I went to the show today, here's my impressions of a few of the PSVR game demos.

Gentle Giant - tons of character in this game. Similar to the feeling of "Moss" or that other game where a plane crashes onto a sky-island, sorry I forgot the name - you are an observer playing with a set that is surrounding you. The demo wasn't very smooth, felt rather early and untested - but as I mentioned, it was oozing with character. I loved how everything looked, and very interested to see how it all plays once the game comes out. Very weird and funny.

GunGrave VR - I remember playing the original GunGrave at E3 mannnny years ago, and yes I've picked up the PS2 game long since - anyway I was interested to give this a "shot" (eh hehhh, eh hehhh) Anyway the demo was pretty garbage. This isn't a condemnation of the actual game, but this demo that they showed felt very thrown together like they were just hurrying to get *something* to show on the floor. It didn't look very good, and it was pretty tired mechanically after about 1 minute. As I said I was a fan of the OG game, so I won't pass judgement yet, but at this point I have low expectations. They should not have shown this at E3 in this state - even a year ago this would have been disappointing!

FireWall - now this is more like it. I have had Farpoint with the AIM controller for about 9mo, so I have made my mind up about the peripheral (I love it!) As for Farpoint, it's not terribly complex, but I love it for what it is. Now FIreWall, this is on the other end of the spectrum - this is complex. Too complex for me, I ate shit inside of a minute! Not my cup of tea, rather a game that doesn't demo very well at E3 (for me), but I appreciated it for what it was, a comprehensive squad-blaster with two teams of 4, at least in this demo setup. Sounds pretty bog-standard, but with the gun peripheral & VR it all felt very legitamite and the experience was very fleshed out. Again, I suck at those games and I got iced immediately so I got put on 3-min wait and peaced the game out, but I liked what I saw. Would love to learn how to play and try some more under "proper condiitons."

Creed - heard about this game from VRLA, didn't realize it was coming for PSVR! Easily my favorite VR game of the show. I had heard some hype about it, and was cautious because of that, but it was quite fun. Very by-the-book arcade boxing game, but such a natural fit for the platform and they made the game more challenging than I expected (in a good way). Demo was short and quite limited, but I will definitely pick this up when it releases. I want more!

Drums of War - ok this was in Indiecade, and running on Oculus, so I can't say that it will come out for PSVR at this stage but I tested it and thought to mention it anyway. Disclaimer, I know the dev, we used to work together at Neversoft (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater) back in the day and he since had designed a bunch of Guitar Hero games there - and been away since those days. Anyway, just mentioning all of that to set the stage as this is very much a rhythm-action shooting game - you beat drums to raze a village and dispatch enemies, all to the beat of positively gnarly metal music (good gnarly not bad gnarly). It still has some kinks to be worked out, but it feels really good in a "why didn't I think of this!" sort of way..

Spider-Man - not VR but I played it for a few min so I will drop in some notes as well. YES it looks absolutely beautiful, Insomniac knows how to make gorgeous-looking games and this is their crown jewel from what I could tell. The bad? This demo was NOT GOOD. Again not a condemnation of the game, I think they just assembled a poor demo so I will blame the producers in this case (I've worked with many of them before, in general - I know how they think). The demo was just boring. web-swing X miles, climb this, punch these guys. I didn't even make it to a mission before I put down the controller (I waited about an hour in line to try the game too, I just got bored and wanted to leave!). Not too sound biased, but honestly the original PS1 Spider-man game was actually way more fun than this demo, visuals aside. I will still pick up the full game when it releases because I do trust these guys, I think they just took a shit with this demo (also I know some of the designers at Insomniac and their work is top-notch so I am excited to see the actual product). NOTE yes I asked the demo guy if there was a VR mode and he said he had no idea, "I think people will get sick if they make Spider-Man VR" to me this is a lazy excuse! You can take any concept and make it approachable with a little R&D, if you have a solid design. Anyway - we will see.

Tomorrow - Tetris VR, I hope?

I don't want to derail this thread with Spiderman talk, but your impressions confirmed what I had expected. The first Spiderman game on the PS1 was fun to play, but the last few on the PS2 just felt like more of the same. I agree with you that they should be looking into doing something on PSVR to create that incredible sense of immersion that you felt the first time you played as Spiderman on PS1 and realized that you could web swing around NYC. Even though the Batman PSVR game was limited in many ways, there were some really immersive parts of the game (my favorite part, by far, was the crime scene investigation when you were on top of the buildings and out in the alleyways of the city). Something like this on PSVR that would make you feel like Spiderman would be enjoyable.

So, wasn't sure if there was a specific thread for this but I just got out of Skyrim VR after a few days.

First thing I have to say is I need Bethesda to stop making ugly looking games. That said, being in Skyrim was a great experience, especially since I was unable to get past the introductory dungeon when I played it before for lack of interest. Are there any other open-world games in the pipeline?

Anyway I feel like I just awoke for a coma or something.

Hmm Ultrawings or megaton rainfall already out maybe? There are more on occulus (like fallout VR) but PSVR seems limited for those type of game. Can't see anything coming up.

I definitely can't wait for Firewall, but I also worry about whether it will have an online presence. It seems to be impossible to keep a VR multiplayer game alive these days.

Is a concern. I tried playing some Rigs & Farpoint over the weekend and couldn't find a single game.

We need to set up some groups for it!

I've been wanting to get some of us VR ppl together for a while now.

We can drop our psn names and what online vr games we have maybe?

The other PSVR game released today that I have been looking forward to is Exorcist Legion - Chapters 1-3. Brian from PSVR Without Parole does a nice job on reviews and is tough but fair on PSVR games. He had a lot of good things to say about Exorcist Legion:

It does sound pricey (paying separately for each 20 minute chapter) and this will be one of those experiences that will lose its luster after one playthrough when you know all the jump scares. But - this is just the kind of short experience that I will be in the mood to play this Fall when Halloween is approaching.

I booted up Fantastic Contraption the other day for the first time in a while. I didn't realize that they put out a big patch a few months back that added a bunch of new levels (from 50 to 100).

Sounds good to me.

I'll check tonight what mp vr games I have and post a list up.

My only limitation is I can only do vr after 10pm gmt Fri and Sat.

Some gameplay of Tetris Effect:

I know it's pretty much just Tetris, but it's the Lumines people and it looks awesome.

Yep, looks and sounds like Lumines. They really should include Lumines with it. If not, I really hope it's $20 or less.

Side note: the lack of godrays in PSVR lenses is sooooo nice. Perfect for that game.

Not trying to shill for Tetris Effect too hard, but this video is pretty cool. They had a competitive-level Tetris expert come in to try it out in the flat and VR versions. This video explains a new element of the gameplay that I didn't know before where you stop time and can achieve up to a 16-line tetris. This guy has never played Tetris on anything except a NES before, has never even tried PS4 (doesn't know the buttons on the controller lol), yet completely dominates the game in VR.

Some (ps4pro) footage from the Z.O.E.2 Demo on the PSN!

At first i thought the cockpit view was off.. with the arms and stuff up so high.

But then i remembered where the cockpit is located...

I just had a thought. Do the 3d enabled games on ps4 work in the headset?

I think I only have daylight and trine 2 but ill give them a go at the weekend.

It would be pretty neat if it works.

Sucks how it switches to a 2D screen whenever a cutscene plays, even ones set in the cockpit where just a little screen appears of a guy talking. They could have at least adapted those ones.

Since Blu-Ray works, I'd expect it would, but I've never tried it.

Would love to hear back from you if they work.

The cutscenes are in 3D, so some effort went into them at least.

That's what I figured.

I'll hopefully get to try it over the weekend and get back to you.

Not sure if there are any other 3d games.

I think the only other I have is uncharted 3 on ps3

So I am really tempted by PSVR, but I am hesitant due to the idea that it will either be abandoned and/or a PSVR2 will be announced soon.

How likely are either of these to happen in the next year?

Looking at the upcoming games it definitely isn't getting abandoned and I don't think a vr2 will come until at least a couple of years after next gen starts as they will want to be focusing all their energy on the launch itself.

Whats sad about Kojima leaving Konami is the fact that a Metal Gear Solid VR game most likely won't be a thing anytime soon. I certainly can't trust anyone left at Konami after Survive. Oh well maybe the Bomber Man guys could do a decent job at making a VR Bomber Man game.

Very unlikely. Sony have painstakingly built up a solid install base to encourage developers to release games for the system, it would be crazy to abandon it or announce PSVR2 now.

I'm about to jump into the world of PSVR, ...better late than never. I plan on grabbing it within the next week or two, I'm going with just the headset cause I have the camera already and one PS Move controller, I'll go pick up another elsewhere from a mom and pop type store.

I'm a physical media guy so I've ordered a couple games hoping they arrive around the time I go pick up my PSVR, so far I've ordered Paranormal Activity, The Lost Soul, Superhot VR, I've imported a physical copy. For this game PAL is the official region but I've read up and other people have had no issues. I will definitely be grabbing Superhypercube which seems to be digital only, no way around that and I'll be grabbing The Inpatient locally.

I have several other games that are VR compatible that I'm itching to play in VR, Gran Turismo Sport, the Star Wars VR Missions, most of all Resident Evil 7 (which I've demo'd before and loved.)

My question is what else would Gaf recommend to me? what are your must haves that I haven't mentioned.

Rez and Thumper for sure if that’s your thing. Also Rush of Blood! Spooky good time. Moss is certainly worth your time as well.

Also small tip. Try to mount your camera higher up. A good 2 feet above eye level. This will help with move tracking for sure.

I really enjoyed the last guardian VR I really wish they did the full game that way though.

I expect you to die is another great One if a little short.

This is going to sound crazy but I think my favourite vr game is actually Tumble.

Another thing you should do is go on psn and get demo disc 1&2 there's a dry good selection of things to try on there including Moss.

Much appreciated, my camera is mounted on top of my TV but I had definitely wondered about that, what the best camera angle would be.

Much appreciated as well too, Moss sounds like forsure something I'll want to check out and I've heard mummers about the demo disc, I had no idea there were two and they were on PSN, I'll definitely look into these suggestions.

I'd throw Tethered and Fantastic Contraption to the recommended list, but only if you like those kinds of games/genres. Tethered was one of my favorite PSVR games and I played it before it even had the big patch with Move support. It's the kind of game where you're constantly kept mentally busy trying to upgrade towers and people so you can fight the next incoming wave when nighttime hits again.

Fantastic Contraption is kinda like a puzzle game built around Technic Legos. You build contraptions that are capable of getting from point A to B, fling a ball, do various tasks, ect.

I don't think there are physical copies of these, but you might find that swapping disks for VR is a bit of a hassle. One thing that always frustrates me is getting all set up to play and then remembering Farpoint is on a disc and I have to take everything off and go fetch it.

I really enjoyed Robinson: The Journey, Farpoint (with the gun controller) and Invisible Hours (got it for 10 € and it was definitely worth the money. Rush of Blood was also very enjoyable.
Robinson and Farpoint were the only games that had a AAA feeling even though both are not very long (6-8hrs).

No idea why there's two as they could have just kept adding to the first. Moss was only just recently added to the second.

I first had mine on top the TV as well and it worked well for the most part. But when trying the more active move games like Superhot and Raw Data I found it was having a hard time seeing the move controllers as well as the controllers blocking the headset lights. I have since then just used some double stick Velcro and mounted the camera to the wall about 6-7 feet away from the play area looking downward a few feet above head level. Now I can move freely with no camera interruptions. You can also use a camera tripod or a mic stand if you have one lying around.

Now keep in mind , you may not have any issue with your set up, but I would recommend a higher camera position for the best performance. Experiment and try a few setups. Superhot is a great test tool. If Superhot doesn’t give you any issue, then you’re likely good to go.

I wish Bravo Team would get a deeper sale than it has been getting. They keep doing a sale down to $30, which is still way too much for me to try it out after the lackluster impressions about it.

It finally happened!! I got my PSVR last night, it almost didn't happen though, BestBuy was sold out, not only within my local store but for the Skyrim bundle but at all the BestBuy's within my area. Went to Walmart and grabbed the last one, all that really mattered is if it goes on sale I have the price guarantee and can take the receipt in and get the difference back and I was really set on this bundle. I had a blast though, played most of what was on the included demo disc 2, "Moss" as heavily recommended as it came from several people within this thread is also now on order after playing the demo.

My Initial Thoughts;

Having tried both the Oculus Rift and the PSVR previously but both only for a short time, my expectations have been exceeded to the full submersion that the depth of each game can provide in any given world. If I'm being super objective, the resolution obviously isn't close to the 4K/HDR setup I have through my PS4 Pro but this is forgiven as you actually feel like you're entering each world and leaving your living room behind. Honestly I feel like a kid, playing games for the first time and its a feeling I haven't felt in years.

I remember reading somewhere in this thread that the price point should be dropped to further this tech to the masses (maybe $250.00) and I agree with that statement completely. I feel this would grab a whole new user base as this is just too unique of an experience to let dry up and leave unsupported. I'll also say at $449.99 CAD for this bundle, I still feel like I got my monies worth and won't regret this purchase.

I've noticed the physical games are very scattered in terms of availability, pricing and importing as I had to buy both Paranormal Activity & Moss online, I've had to import Superhot VR from the UK, a physical copy of Job Simulator is crazy expensive (although I got a good deal well below what you'll see it for online) and thats even IF the game has a physical copy available. I would hope that Sony makes everything abit more standard as far as physical releases. I do appreciate most price points MSRP at $29.99 CAD if you're grabbing something around the release date and I realize I'm late to the party and some of these games were super cheap originally. It makes the collector in me think that some of these games (if you own a physical copy) will be worth something one day. I don't really buy into I'm too lazy or its too much of a hassle to get up and change the disc because for me personally I'll take a quick break in between as I do that.

Last night after getting setup, which wasn't as hard as I expected. I got into having played abit of Moss, Battlezone, Eve Valkyie, Star Child and Thumper from the Playstation VR demo collection 2 and then trying out Skyrim just before bed it actually felt like I was high experiencing a bunch of new games like that for the first time.

Battlezone reminded me of the tank battles in Tron with how everything was so brightly coloured, the interior detail in the tank was pretty detailed as well. Star Child although it was simple and very tech demo like, the way the visuals were presented gave me a glimpse of what a proper side scroller could actually be in VR. I didn't overly enjoy Eve Valkyie, I didnt like the in-game view and lacked the flash and detail of the interior of the Battlezone tank, maybe it was just an early version? Thumper was just fast fun, also very tech demo and techno like, rhythmic with each set of inputs as you progressed. Moss was definitely the standout of the bunch, right from the menu screen looking like the main hall in Hogwarts, the whole forest, the lighting, the way I tilted my headset in to look at the mouse and it reached up to me, it was all just amazing.

Once I finally got to playing Skyrim after the updates, playing through the opening scenes as I was transported with the other prisoners for my sentencing, being IN Skyrim, looking up at the sky as the dragon started to created chaos, thats just one of those things I wont ever forget as a gamer.

I can't wait to sink my teeth into more VR, to play more of whats on order for me personally, to play with the move controllers I charged up before bed last night when I get home tonight after work. To see what the future holds for the genre as the games get better, as the masses start to adopt this engaging new style of play rather than dismissing it as a gimmick or a phase, sorry for rambling on but I'm pretty amped up right now.

I’m glad it finally happened! Yeah my first couple weeks with it after the launch were definitely filled with the high you describe. You get an even better experience since some major games are already available.
