Is Trump/the GOP responsible for uniting or dividing this Country more than ever before?

Is the country the most divided now than ever before?

Its undeniable that Trump being elected divided the country, but its his political appointees and his ridiculous policies that have done the most damage to America in terms of division.

Rural people are not minorities, they represent half the country. And their needs Will be determined by state laws, not coastal cities. Tell me how rural people are minorities and why they should have their voices heard over the needs of city people?
In a popular vote their voices are heard. Besides they get the House of Representatives and the Senate. If anything rural people are vastly overrepresented and holding the rest of the country hostage.

Trumps SCOTUS picks will, God willing, help to preserve religious liberty in this country which will keep us together for decades.

A recipe for Civil War II would be a continued decay of religious liberties and increased persecution of religion while federal power disarms the people and strips them of second amendment rights to bear arms and to overthrow a tyrannical government. If there comes a day under leftist power in the US that laws are passed making it prosecutable "hate speech" to recite the Bible publicly (such as the passages describing the sinfulness of homosexuality), as it already is in some other Western nations, and the same government demands everyone's guns, it won't be long until revolution.

Could you point out any specific things regarding the continued decay of religious liberties?

Very interesting the demographics of this "divide" if it's the media who is at fault.

Looking at the demographics of American Conservatives and Liberals, one side really needs to look at itself and ask some really tough questions.

So you're going to use your guns to fight/kill the military and police you worship?…

The same military that you basically give ask your tax money to every year? Willingly? And believe is actually severely underfunded thus the ever increasing budget?

If you lot are so scared of your military why do you do that? Why give the thing you fear so badly so much power?

It's a simple concept that the Founders envisioned. They gave the populous a right to keep firearms so that if the government ever descends into tyranny the people have means to overthrow it, kill the politicians and their allies and restore a free republic.

Of course if there was a revolution against a leftist tyranny a vast swath of the patriotic and right leaning military (including generals, fighter pilots, tank commanders, etc.) would join the ranks. Many police officers, if not the majority, also lean right (and believe in the 2nd amendment, etc.) as do most of the vets in this country who have warfighting experience, many of whom are still quite young. They have a different point of view? And maybe they realize this political divide started under obama but exploded when Hillary failed to win. Under obama identity politics became the modus operandi of democrats. Happen to disagree with obama, we'll you're racist no matter how well thought out your argument was. Disagree with a female? Welp you are a mysogonist - once again - no matter how well thought out or polite you were with your disagreements.

The left is having a tempter tantrum and it gets sadder by the day.

Your country has always had a racial divide, I mean you did fight a war over it at one point. As for modern times Obama would be the reason but not because of what people here are arguing. Prior to Obama, Conservatives' modus operandi was pitting groups each other, "Us vs Them", them happened to be anyone not white and Christian. The most used boogeyman was black people (Welfare queens, lazy taking all the social welfare, draining the system, thugs/animals, etc) then 9/11 happened and Muslims became the new boogeyman. Obama got elected and Conservatives and their voting block who were used to a country where punching down on these people and using dog whistles against them kinda hit a wall as more people began speaking out against it (those normally silent became aware because those often used dog whistles were now pointed at and used to insult the President), also with Obama becoming President Black Americans became even more vocal about things that concerned them and this both frightened and pissed off Conservatives, because for many of them the "way things just are" kinda started to unravel a little bit. Groups didn't know their place, they were being called "racist" and stuff, their "privilege" started getting called out way more. If anything Trump is America's "course correction" to get things back to where they used to be, when Conservatives could shit on other groups without any group shitting on them.

It's actually pretty amazing to view how America is grappling with all of this, both hilarious, and at the same time scary. Scary mostly because things probably won't ever go back to how they "used" to be, especially given the rise of social media.

Get off your high horse and stop preaching to us like you know what your talking about, if you don’t live in this country and only read or hear what’s going on from the internet or people that can be biased for either political party it doesn’t represent what the everyday average American sees or does.
Yes there are asses on both sides but most Americans just want peace and prosperity.

Get off your high horse and stop preaching to us like you know what your talking about

I've taken a number of US history and economic classes both in secondary and currently in university, so it's not like I'm speaking from ignorance, if you want. I can start providing links from henceforth. There is no high horse here at all, merely a pretty obvious thing I'm pointing out. Any perceived high horse comes from the fact that while we have racism here in the UK quite a bit in so many ways, America's racism is so ingrained in the country and it's politics that you can't help stumble over it and as an outsider be in awe of how much it permeates, shapes, and defines your country. It's exacerbated in your country due to the fact you guys can only have two viable parties so you have all kinds of interests being stuffed into one of two tents. Honestly I feel like social cohesion in your country would be much higher if you had representational parties like most other countries.

That way you can have the Tea Party, Evangelicals, etc in their own party, while those who just want small government, less spending without all the dog whistles and thinly veiled racist shit that makes them look bad can be in their own party of common sense and decency, hell in fact I'm willing to bet if this were done many minority groups would probably flip to Conservatives. Same thing with Liberals, so many different interests under one tent, representational parties would allow them create parties that focus on their wants and no one will have to feel like they're playing second fiddle or their vote is being taken for granted in the sense of "I have no choice but to vote for this party."

if you don’t live in this country and only read or hear what’s going on from the internet or people that can be biased for either political party it doesn’t represent what the everyday average American sees or does.
Yes there are asses on both sides but most Americans just want peace and prosperity.

What are political parties if not the representation of the everyday average person on either side? People choose (and vote) for political parties, not the other way around

As for the bold, sure I imagine that can be said for most people in any country, the statement itself is empty and hollow because that definition of "peace and prosperity" are markedly different for different groups. I imagine LGBT's definition of "peace and prosperity" is going to be pretty different from a fundamental evangelical's definition as illustrated by the constant clashing of religion versus LGBT's right to marry. Likewise I imagine the definition of it will be different for the citizens of SA who oppose the country as it is currently and those who like how it is currently.
Yeah, you don't have a clue as to what you're talking about with this ridiculous mess of a post.

You could always educate me, I'm all ears. Though I'm good on the fear mongering about the impending invasion by the left or whatever.

To those of you who voted No or Don’t Know...

What is wrong with you?

A country that's been around for over 240 years is the most divided it has ever been because of Pres. Trump's tweet? Step outside the bubble and you'll see Pres. Trump's tweets are red meat to grab the attention of people who follow politics a lot i.e. the base, his 24/7 critics and media elites. It's a tool to frame the debate and ingrain his political message with repetition.

Democrats want to give most illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship. They shy away from mass deportation. Republicans like Pres. Trump do not want to incentivize illegal immigration. They want to deport as many people who are in the US without permission as possible.

If you think that fundamental disagreement is the most divisive thing in history, then you should look at countries that have been around far longer or grab a US history book.

There is no need for that because as you deliberately "forget" democrats currently demand the Abolishment of ice (among other things like end to free speech all while loudly showing everyone they dont even know what ice does so trumps tweet is actually correct, no need for "hate" just democrats being unhinged.

Although I agree the media is just as divisive as Trump, to be fair, mostly they just shine a spotlight into Trumps statements. He makes soo many inaccurate ones you eventually feel like the media needs to get off his back, but we all know that's not the medias job.

I blame the media and social media first and foremost for our current divided state. It has been a long time coming. Now that we live in a 24/7 news cycle due initially to the advent of cable tv, and more recently social media, news organizations need to pander to their target audience to stay profitable. Now that their target audience lives in a bubble of information curated to cater to their own interests media just needs to act as a loudspeaker.

Trump is just a symptom of the greater problem. He does know how to manipulate social media to his advantage, and uses the same tactics shared by media to pander to an audience.

Trump is a symptom. The country was breaking up well before him.
Bingo, Trump is all the ills of our society and system of government collected into one person. Loud, prideful, uneducated, shortsighted, etc... As someone said, his appointees are only making matters even worse. The naked corruption and incompetence from Trump and the people he's brought in has left some stupefied, and enraged others. We may be very far from a second civil war, but the country's cultural and political divisions are only growing deeper. That typically primes a country for massive discord in the future.

Those blaming the media are completely wrong. They may be in pursuit of eyeballs and clicks, but they're not wrong to air every instance of shittiness that would've gone ignored in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. The power of the mobile phone and social media allows people to capture things the media and authorities turned a blind eye to in decades past.

Trump is normalizing racism, sexism and anti-intellectualism.
Obviously this divides a nation into the ones who are with him and the ones who aren't.

Group psychology kicks in. As Freud put it 1921:
A group is extraordinarily credulous and open to influence, it has no critical faculty, and the improbable does not exist for it. It thinks in images, which call one another up by association (just as they arise with individuals in states of free imagination), and whose agreement with reality is never checked by any reasonable function [Instanz]. The feelings of a group are always very simple and very exaggerated. So that a group knows neither doubt nor uncertainty.

It goes directly to extremes; if a suspicion is expressed, it is instantly changed into an incontrovertible certainty; a trace of antipathy is turned into furious hatred. Inclined as it itself is to all extremes, a group can only be excited by an excessive stimulus. Anyone who wishes to produce an effect upon it needs no logical adjustment in his arguments; he must paint in the most forcible colors, he must exaggerate, and he must repeat the same thing again and again. Since a group is in no doubt as to what constitutes truth or error, and is conscious, moreover, of its own great strength, it is as intolerant as it is obedient to authority. It respects force and can only be slightly influenced by kindness, which it regards merely as a form of weakness. What it demands of its heroes is strength, or even violence. It wants to be ruled and oppressed and to fear its masters. Fundamentally it is entirely conservative, and it has a deep aversion from all innovations and advances and an unbounded respect for tradition.

Uncanny.

How can the republicans in this thread blame Democrats for having a serious problem with Trump's tweets, speeches, etc.

When you defend a man that is racist and encourages physical harm on others do you really think it's not going to create a division between you and the Dems?

Stop defending assholes and you will see less division.

so as with everything its not a complicated answer that falls into some sort of grey area where a number of groups are responsible for people being divided on either side. its just trump

I feel like our country is being forced to live in a Blue or Red mentality of things, and it just doesn't align with everyday people.

Everyday people aren't 100% in line with one mentality or the other, one set of values or the other, one set of solutions or the other...and yet those are your only viable options. You're forced to pick a side, and deal with everything that comes with aligning yourself with that side.

Both of the parties are chock-full of political animals who abuse the system, exaggerate their points and the points of their opposition, take corporate money, get forced to vote in however their party commands them to, despite their own possible personal beliefs (if they have any).

The current American political system is just a circus. Both sides blow. Whether you align with one side or the other, you have to accept all the bullshittery that comes with it.

The system we have today wasn't designed to be two major parties regardless of state lines or constituent sentiment. It was designed to be individual states representing their people and their people's interests. What we have isn't 50 different perspectives and ideas coming to the table, 50 different points of view...we have 2.

Federal law and state law work well together to some degree to adjust this, but national policy is just a total shit show. The law the governs the land and the decisions that affect every American regardless of location are controlled by a bunch of buffoons (for the most part).

THATS the problem that has to get solved, that CANT be solved...unless we have decades and decades of the American people opening their eyes, voting for individual candidates with a soul and aren't interested in being a politician for the sake of money, but TRULY care about the will of the people.

That isn't what American politics is about anymore.

...

To the main point of this question, I think people are being forced into their "Team Blue" or "Team Red" mentalities, and those two teams aren't just rivals in a state of good sportsmanship. These two teams hate each other. They loathe the existence of the other team. They don't understand the other team. They actively go out of their way to vilify the other team.

People like the ease of 2 options, they like feeling like they're part of the winning team.

So what I think we end up with is the country moving more and more radically into caricatures of their team and losing their own individual perspectives or ability to think for themselves. Sections of those teams are uniting harder than they ever have before...and the sections that don't love being on that team don't get a voice because they're stuck in this "Team" system of government...so they become complacent or silent.

The task of changing the system requires a literal revolution. And there aren't enough people ready to truly do that just yet.

I'm not even sure Trump's treason charge even means anymore.

Is it suppose to be Trump got Russia to win the election for him? Because Trump won the electoral vote and the representatives from each state voted him in.
That's not treason. That's Americans deciding who they wanted their next President to be.

Even back when I followed the whole Russia/Trump story, it just turned into a web of conspiracy theories. Oh no, Trump's son met with a Russian guy, therefore, all 62 million votes are invalid. Like wtf?
Just give it up at this point. Either try again in 2020 or just learn to move on.

Where did Trump label the Democrats the enemy in his tweet?

Conservatives can say whatever they want about who other people should vote for and why. What do you mean by stand up to it?

The POTUS is using his power on Twitter to advance his political agenda. You act like he's advocating violence against the other side instead of supporting a political party. And people will support the GOP whether I support Pres. Trump or throw a tantrum until I'm blue in the face. You're not a decent human being because you disagree with conservative worldviews. Tens of millions will always vote Republican and there's nothing per se wrong with that.

Also, yes I encourage you to set aside some time to research what America has done to its citizens as well as people of color. I don't think a tweet saying vote Republican will top your most divisive list after that. I could be wrong...
