Nintendo Switch online play paywall live on 2nd half of September

I hope they add Snes, N64 and GC-titles to that service. A couple of half assed Nes-games won't do the trick.

SNES if you're lucky. There's absolutely no way Nintendo offer N64 ROMs when the subscription fee is so low. They haven't even mentioned GC compatibility, people just assume it's coming.

I'm not defending their choices, it's just realistic given Nintendo's history of charging people outrageous amounts for games that are a decade(s) old.

Michele

you.
I'm not going to agrue and be all angry, but I'd like to just ask just in case.

Why did Nintendo now require us all peoples to pay for online subscription? I can't seem to find any article explaining it thoroughly, even when searching. And if I had a choice to be angry at Nintendo or Microsoft, I'd be very angry at Microsoft - it's that's company's fault that Nintendo now wants us to pay for Online.

There's better features, not just with being able to play online, but still...

I would't pay for any of this shit even a goddamn cent once per 10 years, cuz frankly it's just that fucking pathetic, ancient and extremely laughable online service which'll be launching in 2018 (!!!!). Give us a fuckin' option to back-up our save data online without paying anything or give us an option to make back-ups to USB drive, you corporate assholes!

Here we go. The end of all free online play on consoles is happening next month. Thanks Microsoft.

Yeah, screw Microsoft for implementing online payment on PS4 and Switch.

/s

The difference between the companies is Microsoft is the only who can require it, as it's the only stable console network.

I think we will have to wait for Smash Ultimate to release to see whether they finally got a worthwile online experience or not. The online was always my biggest issue with any of the previous Smash games as I could never really practice online. If they nail it this time I am willing to give them 2 Dollars a month.

This. Online was terrible anf laggy. Its 2018 , Nintendo, i better not lag.

You need to pay because both competitors also charge. All of these online paywall subscriptions are free profit for the platform holders and Nintendo isn't going to say no to free money.

If Xbox 360 hadn't done as well as it did, MS would have had to stop charging money and there would be no online fee on PS4 or Switch.

You mean the original Xbox.

Fortnite proved voice chat on the device can be done simply, they need to make it right before I pay.

Meh, I mostly going ignore it like I did with online subscription for PlayStation because I honestly no longer play online games.

They need to add more features than just cloud saves. The times of simply charging to play online are basically over, in the sense that the package contains other bonuses. On the Xbox you get free games every month for example. Same goes for the PlayStation. Their pricing is not bad though. $20 a year is quite reasonable, provided the network is at least stable.

Does anyone else think the launch is going to be a failure? They still haven't announced a precise date, they must be struggling to get it working.

As others have stated, giving free ancient NES games is almost insulting. Whatever you think of the monthly games on PS Plus and Xbox Live, at least they're current generation titles.

The 360/PS3 gen is the first time the Xbox got competition. Most PS2s didn't even have an Ethernet port. Embracing the PS3 was the only chance for free online play to survive.

Yes. You can still play for free this month but not all of next month.

Ah. That's a pity. I'll wait and see if it's server based then. No way I'm paying money for online play when it's P2P.

I sincerely believe Dark Souls was being delayed because of this. They already showed it and it was definitely ready with blightown running like a charm.

As far as I know they have almost nothing top tier besides Mario Tennis (Somewhat old already) to encourage online on launch day and Smash is far away. Dark Souls is most definitely an online seller game for the dreaded online paywall launch day.

They will surely put the new Monster Hunter game in the spotlight too, since it releases at the end of August. Warframe is also headed to Switch, albeit there is no release date as of yet, but I think it will be ready to go in the near future when the service launch.

I agree with you. They are surely delaying all those online big hitters.

Listing three unimpressive services this subscription will bring us, isn't exactly selling me on this, Nintendo.

Back to the drawing board. If you want to charge for online play, you better have something amazing in store for us. Not 30 year old games.

the only reasons i can see them not giving a release date is because:

1. they are working their asses off to finish it and might be working to the nth minute on september 30th and not really sure what itll launch with.

2. its getting launched alongside a game and they dont want to lock the game into any date

man these features are just not enticing. granted its only 20$...so i'll prob get it.

Fucking hell guys, if anything, i'd much rather pay $2 per month just to have new, proper, far more functional and non bare-bones UI and goddamn music in eShop. That's how unappealing and pathetic this "online service" actually is.

Really? We are a bit over a month away and they can STILL not give an actual date ?

Anyway, I have no doubt they'll sell a ton of subscriptions.
Personally I'll wait for impressions on how well smash works online. If it's good I might pay, if it's like on WiiU then fuck no.

I just play Splatoon 2 online. I'll have to pay to play splatoon 2. At least it isn't that much money. Its still really lame, considering the service is crap:
no voice chat, no messaging, p2p, slow matchmaking, very clunky party system, etc.

Well atleast, it's only 1/3 of what you need to pay for PS+ and XBLG.
They need to add more features than just cloud saves.
Cloud saves shouldn't be locked behind a paywall, they should be free and unlimited for every user imo. In general: the more saves a user has, the games a user has bought, the more licensing fees the platform owner has received from the user.

Nintendo loves their NES library. I already own NES games on my other Nintendo consoles. They're going to wait till we're all in retirement homes to put SNES and GameCube games somewhere portable

Oh man, I wouldn't get my hopes up.
Oh I know. I have no expectation for it to be any better than on WiiU.

But on the off chance it's actually not an unplayable laggy mess I'd be willing to pay $20 a year

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

I don't really have a problem with them charging for cloud saves, but fuck them for not having any alternatives (ie local saves). It's shameful that you can't back up your own saves to the SD card so they can be used in another console in the event that yours breaks - at least without resorting to running homebrew applications.

It just makes their cloud saves "feature" feel like an extortion fee.

Considering you can save shit to your 3DS it is pretty much just greed at this point. Hell I can backup my saves on my Vita...Or 360 :/

There’s going to be lag just because most Switch users are on WiFi since the dock doesn’t have Ethernet (and I imagine few bother with the adapter) and a lot of people play portably anyway.

I’m glad I can back up my saves finally. I’d hate to lose 130hrs in Xenoblade. I’m not happy I am paying $20 to back up saves.

The dock not having ethernet is the most aggravating aspect of the switch. If you dock it you were promised to get console features but that is one of the most important ones.

Definitely not wasting my money on this until the service has matured and is worth even getting. the draconian implementation of voice chat alone turned me off to looking forward to this.

Same, though I don’t care much about $20 given my income save backups shouldn’t be behind a paywall.

I just hope they add better features to the service. PS+ I don’t mind paying for as I play enough if the monthly games and buy digitally with the extra discounts in PSN sales that it saves me money (especially with usually buying years at discounts). So I view it as a membership that saves me money and more than pays for itself like Cisco or Amazon Prime. Same with Live if I had an Xbox (I get those games on PC). I’m not seeing that value with Nintendo’s service yet(don’t care about NES games), but at least it’s cheaper.

I have until December to decide if the online service is worth it. All big blockbusters are on other platforms anyways.

Fortnite and Paladins are available on dozen platforms anyways. Splatoon does not have enough content to warrant any subscription.

I'm sorry, what? Microsoft is the only stable console network? I have had zero issues playing on my Switch or PS4, some goes with friends and family.

I can’t recall Nintendo’s online being down, though I don’t play much inline there. PSN does seem to be down more than Live was last gen (maimed 360 then), but it’s not frequent or anything and may just be bad luck on my part with it happening to be down more often when I’ve wanted to play.

Which it probably is as googling found this article that shows not much difference between outage frequencies.

Not interested. I hardly use my PS+ subscription though I still get my money's worth from the cloudsaves and remote play. I can't imagine I'd play more on my Switch compared to my PS4. The lower price is nice, though.

Seriously these ppl with their narrative as if this was Sony circa 1998 or something lol PSN has been very stable for last few years with hardly any issues if anything Live went down last year more than PSN.

Boo fucking hoo, cry me a river. If you don't want paid multiplayer, then put your money where your mouth is and don't buy it. Sony and Nintendo fans could have prevented both of those companies from enacting paid multiplayer by, you know, not fucking buying it but apparently principles only take you so far.

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. Yabuki turned off voice chat in Mario Kart races. True artists of their time.
Well, $20 for a year is a lot better than $25 for 3 months.
