Nintendo Switch online play paywall live on 2nd half of September

There’s going to be lag just because most Switch users are on WiFi since the dock doesn’t have Ethernet (and I imagine few bother with the adapter) and a lot of people play portably anyway.
To be fair. In my experience even comparing WiFi performance Nintendo consoles have felt a step behind

As much of a low budget copy that it was, at least PlayStation All stars was playable online for me.

Well, $20 for a year is a lot better than $25 for 3 months.
To be fair, 24 Xbox One and 24 Xbox 360 games per year is a lot better than 20 NES games.

Don't you have to use a smartphone app to do voice chat on the Switch too? Will that change when this paid subscription comes out? I'm surprised that Nintendo have the balls to charge for this to be honest. They want to get into the paid online game, but with a service that's not even up to scratch with the original Xbox.

Based on what I've seen, Nintendo's "big thing" is that you can play the old NES games (to be included with the monthly/yearly service I believe) online with other players. Not saying that justifies the cost, but they're definitely banking on that feature being sought-after enough.

I've not really noticed it much myself. I didn't seem to get more lag/disconnects in Smash on Wii U or Mario Kart/Splatoon 2 on Switch than the fighting games or shooters etc. I play on PS4. If you have a good connections its mostly luck of the draw with the person/people in your match having a good connection or not since most games are peer-to-peer rather than dedicated servers these days.

Until they allow us to play the old games we paid to emulate on the Wii U, on our Switches, I will laugh at the notion paying a subscription to emulate 8 bit games on my Switch are worthwhile.

I really wish when this goes live they scrap the friend codes and just go with usernames, including trophy/ achievement support would be good too. Notice I'm not even mentioning the chat support but if were paying for the service now, why not make it worth the price of admission.

These are all standard features that should be included when you pay for an online gaming service. I wouldn't pay my internet provider for the ability to have internet and have them tell me its up to me to go figure out my own solution for modem, wire everything up myself and find my own work arounds for technical support, thats not acceptable.

yes but switch is a mobile console, which people can take it to places with crap internet, like Starbucks, or if they are on a road trip and take it to some hotel with free crappy wifi, it doesn't matter if you haven't experienced it doesn't mean theres not going to be any lag. If they want people to play online games like Dark souls remaster, or even overwatch, you shouldn't have a mobile console with WiFi.

Dark souls remaster also keeps getting pushed back on switch, cause they can't fix the lag.

Does anyone else think the launch is going to be a failure? They still haven't announced a precise date, they must be struggling to get it working.

As others have stated, giving free ancient NES games is almost insulting. Whatever you think of the monthly games on PS Plus and Xbox Live, at least they're current generation titles.

I still am in a I will beleive it when I see it phase. TBH even with this vague second half of September announcment I still am not 100% sold its actually going to launch.

And I suspect that most 3rd parties will stay away from the service and probably even some nintendo 1st party games eventually.

Yeah, you don't own those games, so to a lot of people, those "free" games are worthless. I just want to be able to play online, if I'm paying for online. $20 for a year is very manageable. The NES games will have online play added, and more games are getting online features like Mario Party. Nintendo charged $5 a year for PokeBank and all it did was store your Pokemon and let you transfer them between games, I think. I imagine they'll include that with this online service for Pokemon Switch.

Three biggest corporations in the world: Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are using loop holes in the legislation to exert strong pressure on young people and kids, forcing them to pay for a yearly service that they absolutely don't need in order to play the game that they bought.
How can anyone support it? It is 100% anti consumer scam scheme.

Online services should be sold separate from online games! Nobody should be pressured by corporations to buy anything that they don't want.

Boo fucking hoo, cry me a river. If you don't want paid multiplayer, then put your money where your mouth is and don't buy it. Sony and Nintendo fans could have prevented both of those companies from enacting paid multiplayer by, you know, not fucking buying it but apparently principles only take you so far.

this is invariably a poor argument. I've never paid for Gold, Microsoft couldn't give a shit

It's a shame paid multiplayer is a thing on consoles, for Nintendo especially. I don't think there's ever a justification for it, but Nintendo especially don't have the games out there to justify it. Dipping in and out to some Nintendo online games was great, it's killed that for a lot of people

This is the third consecutive generation where Nintendo has not offered permanent, account-based ownership of their retro titles.

Not interested in their online offerings when they can't even get their digital storefront right.

I still love their games, mind you. I'm just hesitant to pay for any of Nintendo's digital offerings and that includes their online fee.

Right, I hope you have sources to back up this claim.
You can stay mad all you want, but dark souls remastered on switch has been playable at every single gaming event. The only thing holding it back is online play. If Switch can't handle a game thats like been out since ps3 and xbox. Good luck for them trying to get games like overwatch, they need better online gaming.

I mean, outside of PC, does anyone?

At least accounts are normal accounts now and not bound to your system.

I could be wrong regarding Microsoft (I don't buy their online stuff) but I still have PSN titles from a decade ago, and I can still transfer PS1 games across Vita, PSP, and PS3. I'd still like even more open licensing, but Nintendo is too far behind the curve at this point. They need to leapfrog what Microsoft and Sony are doing if they want to have a competitive edge, in my opinion.

Not really. Imagine if there had been a reaction to Sony going to paid multiplayer equal to the reaction to the unveiling of the Xbox One. That would have forced a change or at least a discussion about it.

I've been a member of XBL since the beta test and didn't mind paying then because it was so far ahead of anything else offered by anyone in respect to online gaming and services. They have done enough since then to keep me on board. I would imagine that is the case for the vast majority on both the Xbox & PlayStation.

My point is that if you want to complain about your console of choice going to the paid model, blame that company and/or the majority of its fans who went along with it when it was first rolled out.

Well it's $20 a year for
>no parties
>No voice chat
>no share play
>Almost no games worth playing the paywall
>Friend codes
>No free games from this millennium with the subscription

It's not like they COULD ask for more money.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Party, Pokemon (Switch), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary, NES games, etc... (Sonic Team Racing, Fortnite, Mario Tennis Aces, ARMS, etc...)

There are way more online games here (that I would play) than on Xbox/PlayStation, especially at the advent of their service. The only game I'd play online on Xbox is Halo:MCC. I stopped paying for it long ago on 360, because the price was ridiculous when all I wanted to play was one game, Halo 3.

How are you playing Fortnite, Splatoon as well as Mario Kart online right now?

Can you elaborate? Is there something wrong with their servers currently?

This is especially bad since their service is noticeably worse than Sony and MS and they still have to the gall to charge for it. Weak shit, Nintendo.

Still haven't paid for it on my PS4. I'm holding out as long as I can.

The service provides access to online play & Save Data Cloud backup in compatible games

Not all games? Can Nintendo do anything that's not half assed?

That's my point, you are playing them right now for free. What is going to be so different that you have to be paying $20 to play those exact same games that you are currently playing for free right now? Considering all those bullet points you quoted are not included with that fee, which would enhance those games and give more reason as to why you are all sudden charged for.

But as it stands, it seems to just be a flick of a switch paywall without additional benefits to those games you are enjoying now for free.

PlayStation 3 was free. I wish Xbox Live was free. The servers do cost money to run. Some of my favorite games had their online servers shut down. Mario Kart Wii & DS, Metal Gear Online 2. Maybe they'll last longer with this fee. They also seem to focus more on online features/games because of this. People have wanted online-play in Mario Party for a long time.

They were free on the entire life span of the consoles they were on, then they improved significantly with resources such as party chat, Remote Play, SharePlay, etc., etc..

I would have the same criticisms if they decided to put up a wall during the generation they started off free, especially since the pay wall doesn't offer any significant upgrades over what you have right now.

Personally I still think online multiplayer should be for free and not behind a paywall no matter the console, but at least there is effort from the other 2 to mask it with some attractive features compared to Nintendo.

Hell, they're even Trojan horsing it with backup saves with no other free alternative.

oh look other angry xbox fan, I don't have to prove anything to anyone, least of all you. Welcome to ignore list. Theres no other reason why dark souls remastered is being delayed if its already playable.

Yeah, I don't use any of those PS4 features. Not happy with them "masking" it. Remote-Play should be free if it's not. Everyone has Discord on their phone now, so Party Chat is unnecessary.

IDK, I've tried Fortnite on Switch, and was not impressed with the performance. Certainly not as good as it was on XB1. Maybe $20 per year per subscriber is what they'll actually spend to shore up their servers.

I believe remote play is free, but their networks still provides an infrastructure for it when you are not local.

And that is my point, what you were playing right now will have zero change other than your wallet. So I can see why there are people who will be dissatisfied even if it's only $20.

but I just wanted to show how ignorant some people are on these forums.

The only ignorant here is you. The link only says it's network test is delayed, not specifying why. Yet, you run your mouth like you know the details, it's "because they can't fix the lag."

oh look other angry xbox fan,

I've watched paladins also for Switch, it does have lag spikes sometimes, Nintendo should charge for network though, that way they can get a better network.

I'm glad to see the healthy criticism here for Nintendo's middling online support. Perhaps if customers don't support it, Nintendo may rethink how they present an online service like this.

What?
Why would people expect to have no lag if they play from Starbucks or Hotel wifi?
Lots of people play on laptops, specially the more popular and less demanding games like LOL, Fortnite or CS:GO, etc, and despite being mobile you don't see anyone expecting to get a lag free experience in LOL playing from a Starbucks.

And lets not forget the Switch has a docked mode that basically turns it into a home console.

its different though for some online games like overwatch, cause you can actually get banned if you keep DCing. I also just wish wifi gaming would go away or not be a thing. If you are doing online gaming you shouldn't have to use wifi. It also just makes people like bringing online gaming to free wifi spots to have nothing but lag

payed online for what ? there is barely any online games on the system, actually, there is barely any games on the system
Hyperbole alert! Online gaming is largely synonymous with multiplayer/matchmaking. With that in mind the xbox one has most of the games sony players have access to and more when you consider most online games are 3rd party. Battlefield, call of duty, destiny, rocket league, diablo, overwatch, grand theft auto, minecraft, fortnite, titanfall, the division, battlefront, doom, fifa sports games etc. I mean gee the xbox doesnt have anything. Oh wait the xbox has more exclusive multiplayer focused games than sony: Forza horizon, forza, halo, gears of war, splinter cell, killer instinct, sunset overdrive, cuphead, crackdown 3, sea of thieves. But do go on about which console has the least multiplayer games on it. Im humored.
