Assassin's Creed: Odyssey Review Scores

That’s not grinding. Grinding is when you keep doing the same thing over and over to get XP.

The side quests aren't optional. When people say "grinding", they mean that in order to progress you are required to do boring side activities. The "time savers" tab in the store is a very accurate description of what is going on.

The mechanics of the game were changed to fit this business model. For example, you can't assassinate all enemies anymore and each camp has at least one captain. It is designed to force you into combat, where the levels and gear matter. The bounty hunter mechanic makes it even worse, further pressuring you to level up.

You can like it all you want, but there's no denying the game mechanics were adjusted for microtransactions and not fun.

It is the worst game of all time. An absolute chore to play. It is bad in every single aspect. So bad that I will join you on my crusade to bring it down once and for all, and to show all these sheeple how evil of a corporation Ubisoft is. This game is an absolute shame, an insult to every single RPG ever made. Fuck, I vomit at the thought of this game even existing. It offends me in every fiber of my being. Just today I played the game (out of disgust, of course, because I love torturing myself) and I vomited when Kassandra opened her mouth. She did not even say anything, just the animation of it brought back horrible memories of last night, where I was so excited to maybe finally meet an NPC, only to give me a side activity! Can you believe that? A fucking SIDE ACTIVITY?!?!?! Not only that, but he started talking about his life! How dare he! How dare these developers think that I, master of RPGs of yore, am falling for that kind tomfoolery. On top of that, what angries me so much that I right now need to put a fist in the wall, is the fact that he gave me a choice. A fucking choice? In an RPG? And then, said choice even changed the outcome of said quest. They even gave me experience and loot!!!! I even went a level higher!!!! Man, just thinking about it makes me want to kill myself. In fact, I still have some rope in kitchen drawer. Then again, I won't let Ubisoft, the monster that it is, have the pleasure of me robbing myself of my life. It is they who must suffer instead! I hope these developers rest in hell for eternity. To me, compared to this game, what Hitler did was small time. They literally created this game for gamers who want to suffer through what is such bad game design that I can only conclude the people who made it are sick to a level that hasn't existed throughout the ages.

Thus ends my rant. This game isn't just bad. It is the worst thing humanity has ever created. The holocaust is nothing compared to this.

YES TO HADES WITH THEM!!!

Really enjoying the game, I'm reading the book 'Mythos' by Stephen Fry and it's very entertaining to see how the developers tried to put as many Greek myths and folklore in the game. I can't wait to stumble onto the next "I read about this" moment. Great setting for an Assassins Creed game. I trully recommend the book to :lollipop_horns:

Holy overreation Batman!

I know everyone loves to bash Ubisoft, but this is ridiculous.

Its obvious how they designed the game. If you want to ONLY main story line the game, then yeah, you probably need the boosters. If you play it they way they designed it with "get to a new area, handle a few side quests (many are actually good and not just fetch), then handle the main story mission. then you don't look at the microstransactions one second. Doing side missions are not grinding. It might take 15/20 minutes to level up properly if you stay on top of it.

Overall, its a good game. No, its not Witcher 3 status (but nothing is...well, maybe on Oct. 26 we will have another and even better), but its a decent rhythm of new area, side quests, main mission, move on.

Let it go.

(Grinding is doing the same thing (literally the same thing) over and over to level up). Ubisoft actually put some work in their side quests (World, Main, Character...not the contracts), and they are for the most part worthy of your time and an important part of the gameplay loop. Moreover, none of those quests are draconian or too time consuming.

You don't like it. Great. Many do. They aren't wrong.

Can you guys elevate the debate and stop arguing about taste and colors?

So anybody who find AC Odyssey very good enlight me about :
-The instant kill teleport dagger
-The 40 feet fall without death
-The usual deaf, blind, dumb AI
-The wallhack vision
-The auto guided lock-on GPS eagle
-The Offshore powerboat
-The China MMORPG quality of majority of the side quest
-The Cashshop in a 60$ game
-The intrusive UI, markers everywhere, HD sattelite map
-The dated and wonky animation
-The horse glued to the ground
-The whole unrealistic mess and immersive breaking of every encounter in a supposed historical context
Etc...

Like I said in my previous post, we all want AC to be great licence and I think Ubisoft got something with their new vision of the game(except the micro-transaction).
But Ubisoft should stop trying to change Assassin Creed recipe and instead create a new licence using all those "RPG" element they want to add.
I'm all for a "Skyrim a like" made by Ubisoft, but they should stop dragging all the dull aspect of Assassin Creed in it and vice-versa.
Thing is the name Assassin Creed is so lucrative it's their insurance of back on investment, they don't want to risk their money on something else, but they really should!

For the moment their half beat-them-all, half RPG, half whatever... is just not appealing to me or anyone looking for a in-deph gaming experience, since AC Odyssey does everything, but only a very average spectrum.

Can you guys elevate the debate and stop arguing about taste and colors?

So anybody who find AC Odyssey very good enlight me about :
-The instant kill teleport dagger
It and a number of abilities are due to the Isu Artifact called the "spear of leonidas". Also it isn't teleportation, it is more of a fast/heavy throw with Alexios/Kassandra running behind them. The Isu Artifact basically makes the player a "demi-god".
-The 40 feet fall without death
This is due to the Isu Artifact. It is a McGuffin.
-The usual deaf, blind, dumb AI
It is a staple of Assassins Creed games at this point. I have not played one AC game that didn't have really dumb AI.
-The wallhack vision
Isu Artifact :p Also could be reasoned that the "sight" is similar to that of improved hearing, allowing you to "see" where they are. Kinda like that one Zombie game on PS4/PS3 (whose name escapes me).
-The auto guided lock-on GPS eagle
Possibly Isu Artifact, or possibly Isu Blood runs in the character of Alexios/Kassandra. I haven't gotten that far to confirm that - but that is how it was reasoned with Bayek in Origins.
-The Offshore powerboat
Gameplay reasons. The world is also like 1/50th the size of the real world. Some things need to be changed. Also Isu Artifact, raises strength. Still a McGuffin.
-The China MMORPG quality of majority of the side quest
Dunno. A lot of the side quests are fun for me. That is entirely subjective.
-The Cashshop in a 60$ game
The cash shop that has been in every AC game since 4? That isn't new, nor is it required.
-The intrusive UI, markers everywhere, HD sattelite map
You can turn those off.
-The dated and wonky animation
That is subjective.
-The horse glued to the ground
Dunno what you mean by that. Could you expound?
-The whole unrealistic mess and immersive breaking of every encounter in a supposed historical context
Welcome to Assassins Creed. This has been a thing since the first game.

Like I said in my previous post, we all want AC to be great licence and I think Ubisoft got something with their new vision of the game(except the micro-transaction).

Thing is the name Assassin Creed is so lucrative it's their insurance of back on investment, they don't want to risk their money on something else, but they really should!

I am all for that. I much preferred the AC games when they were more focused on being an assassin and dealing with more grounded historical stuff (with some goofy things thrown in). However, I still enjoy the games they release.

Some interface elements are good because they replace your senses. Real life awareness can't be simulated by a game and completely turning off UI helpers is handicapping yourself even more. I don't like permanent silhouette wallhacks but ghosts, pings, arrows etc are a good thing.

I've played about 15 hours now and was loving it. However, the game is now plagued with ongoing freezes, frame rate drops and hard crashes. I've had to reset my console 3 times in an hour. This is not cool.

Nice, yesterday's patch added a chest to the ship so that you can store items. It's nice not having DLC and unwanted legendary gear clog up my system any longer.

I'm at about 20 hours on PC now, no crashes, very few glitches. It eats up CPU for sure, but otherwise I've had a pretty consistent experience. It bums me out that whaling is apparently out, as well as a lot of non-combat related side activities. I always liked doing that as a little break from the core experience, was hoping some stuff would pop up if I progressed the story a bit, but I don't see anything coming in. I still think Alexios' motivations for accepting quests are really awful, and it takes me out of the story a lot, but I'm really enjoying the moment-to-moment gameplay. Specced myself into almost all Assassin tree stuff, this is definitely the best it's felt to sneak into a base and dismantle it methodically. I also love that one enemy being alerted doesn't instantly mean that the whole base is aware, that was always a shitty mechanic.

Question to those of you further in the story:

When you unlock the Cult hunting stuff, how do you open new cult member information spheres? I've been trying to find the cult member in the Athens Quarry to complete my snake legendary armor set, but I don't know how to reveal the character. The notes just say to do quests around the quarry so I've done them from the nearby message board, but no additional clues yet.

Can you just go and play the games you enjoy instead of annoy the fuck out of people? I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

He's been complaining about the game since long before it even released. He's going to stick around as long as people continue to feed him. The best everyone can do at this point is just ignore him and let him shout into the void.

There's criticism of a game and then there's what he's doing. He's not bringing value to this thread, so respond in kind by not giving him the attention he clearly craves.

OG PS4 - seems to happen whenever a bounty hunter approaches or when I whistle for my horse in a town.

Any chance you noticed a 'stretched' texture (not sure how else to describe it) when it happens? On my PS4 Pro I've had two instances where a character texture suddenly stretches into the ground and then basically freezes up the entire console, forcing me to reboot the game.

If I am thinking right, I know what you are referring to. The Cult information was located within a chest in the silver mine. Use Ikaros to spot the chest. Some of them also drop randomly from mercenaries (or maybe a mercenary of a certain rank). Hope that helps! [/quote]

That’s not grinding. Grinding is when you keep doing the same thing over and over to get XP. I’m actually playing the game as intended, exploring and seeing the world. It’s not the same as grinding in let’s say dark souls, running from camp A to camp B getting XP then doing it again. At no point have I thought “I need to level up, I’ll keep doing this same thing”.

And if I focussed on the main missions? Who does that? Honestly? Who buys a massive open world game, only to play the main missions? Who plays Skyrim and even does the main mission? I didn’t even finish the main Skyrim questline until after hundreds of hours?

I think some people are expecting this to be like the old Creed games, and it’s just not. But even in those games, they had you doing a lot of open world type stuff.

Exploring the world and sidequests is not grinding. And I’ll end up never having to remotely know mts exist.

Faux outrage... again.

No, i've not experienced that yet. I've deleted the game install data and reinstalling now, hoping that it helps.

Game is Fantastic been playing 15 hours now only killed the first leader. Much improved over Origins and I platinumed that. Graphically impressive again even over Origins.
Fun to be back on a ship miss a proper steering tho.

Gonna be a long game massive map.

I liked Assassins Creed Origins, Rayman Legends and Watch Dogs 2. So it is hard to call me Ubisoft hater.
But I've decided to skip Odyssey because everything that I'd disliked in Origin become worst. it is basically a free2play mobile kind of the game that cost $60 for Poverty Edition or $120 for Whale Edition.

The game is level/gear/resources based, the things that could make the experience more enjoyable are locked behind microtransactions, for example:

- 50% XP Booster;
- Most efficient gear;
- Best looking gear;
- Resource packs;
- Mounts/Ships;

- The other half of the game locked behind Season Pass and DLC;

Despite what brain-washed people are saying, the microtransactions in single player game like Assassins Creed Odyssey aren't optional. It is the only way to play the game. I was watching some twitch plays and it takes hours to complete some boring side-quest and it takes forever to fight an enemy.

Lets define the word "grind":

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/grind
a difficult or boring activity that needs a lot of effort

If you are unoccupied and can grind dozens of recourses, side-quests and gear for long, lonely hours, good for you, just don't fool yourself and people around like it isn't a problem. It might not be a problem for you, but it is a problem for people who value their time and money.

Assassins Creed Odyssey is a great game that was butchered by some greedy lunatics who don't play games and have no respect for gamers.

Yeah, right? I think I'm around 15 hours in, really enjoying myself, doing sidequests, exploring, main story, and now I find out, not only am I playing the game wrong, playing it like this isn't even possible! I guess I must've somehow bought the darned XP booster without knowing or something.

You mean streamers who don't have optimised / engraved gear and go on melee combat with weapons that have + hunter damage on them ?

at that point its not the game mate. I swear I'm gonna record shit when I'm playing

The "you can't one shot" also is a straight up lie, I can one shot bounty hunters just fine

Depends on the Bounty Hunter for me. However, now at the level I am at, my Assassination stat is so high that I rarely have to fight for more than a few seconds. It is insane at how much you can break the game with literal 5 seconds of thinking about stats.

I think the casual players of the series expected something else, that's why they think the game is grindy.

I don't know maybe the truth is in the middle. I like RPG's so grind and farming is my thing and in this game i can't find any but maybe others find simple tasks like doing 2 or 3 sidemissions for 2 or 3 levels a grind. It doesn't surprise me, there are people that rush through the story and even skip cutscenes.

The point though of this thread is to point out exactly the goods and bads of the game, not make exaggeration's just because we like or we don't like the game, and to be honest i can't really trust people that haven't played it, played a few hours or watched a stream. Watching someone play is very easy to get baited into the way the player wants to present the game. You can do this with everygame.

People. The fly in the soup wouldn't ruin its taste either, but why would anyone in their right mind eat it?
Why would anyone say that the fly is optional? If you paid a decent price for a soup, there shouldn't be any fly in it.

The Assassins Creed Odyssey is RPG game. The grind was always part of RPG gameplay. It is just dishonest to mislead people into believing that there is no grind or you didn't notice it. It is a straight up lie or ignorance.

The main problem with this game is a a fine line between single player game and mobile free2play microtransactions integrated in it. You can literally buy a more enjoyable and less grind experience.

While a "fly" in the soup wouldn't bother a common men, people like me would totally refuse to eat it.

I really liked Origins it was amazing experience but I totally hated microtransactions and grind. The AC microtransactions situation is degrading fast. I'm totally losing appetite for Ubisoft games.

All this happened only because some people who don't play games and don't respect gamers are in charge of the game development and they trying to shove their shady microtransactions and lootboxes everywhere.

I believe what most people are trying to say is that for an RPG the grind is minimal and the MT's are probaply for people that want the classic AC experience, meaning doing only story. That is though not the way to play this specific game. Maybe it's a douchebag move that they made the side stuff non optional but on the other hand why buy a game like this if you don't plan to do any side activities.

It's more like ordering pizza and paying extra to remove the cheese.

All this talk about grinding are sounding more and more like a desire to speed through the game. Its an RPG, its supposed to take time. There are other games out there, better in fact by your standards. Calling people brain-washed is just outright dumb and disrespectful.

The microtransactions are there obviously, it was there for Origins. But you're not forced to use it. I'm taking my time with the game right now, and surprise, have not hit a brick wall. If you feel like the game absolutely forces you to progress via microtransactions when several others have not even felt the need to even consider it, I guess thats on you. Best move on. Arguing about the same thing over and over is quite pointless at this point. Lets agree to disagree.

The way I see it, anyone that labels those who disagree with them as "brainwashed" isn't worth debating or discussing something with. They're quite frankly either too stupid or too unbelievably narcissistic to grasp the possibility that there exists people that may not share the same opinion as them.

Yes I agree. I mean, some players praise The Witcher 3 while criticize? this game..I do think they never played The Witcher 3. I played The Witcher 3 on the highest difficulty and if you don't level up, it's literally impossible to progress in the story and to go all over the map without being killed in 1 or 2 hit. You need to do quests and level up to be able to progress further. I mean, this is an RPG..like this game.

Do you think the fact it is an RPG is pure coincidence? Or maybe they did it this way because it is easier to sell microtransactions?

Was it a profit oriented decision or a decision purely out of creativity?

The Witcher 3 was excellent from beginning to end. This game's story is trash.

And why would you play The Witcher 3 on Death March the first time? I played it on Normal in my first playthrough, rushed through the campaign because I wanted to know what would happen next, and I liked it enough to give it a second playthrough on Death March for achievements and side stuff I missed the first time. Check my achievements if you want see what I played.

Yes, the hardest difficulty in any game tend to be, you know, difficult.

I'm not going to speculate on what their intentions were. All I know is that I do not for a second feel the need to spend more money via microtransactions, and I'm having fun. It is very clear that you do not enjoy this game. You need to let this go mate.

It's not called a conversation if it doesn't go anywhere. Yes microtransactions are a horrendous way of preying off customers, but Odyssey I personally feel, does not do this. It isn't shoved into your face. It's there for convenience. Your claim that the grind was intentionally put there to coax players towards microtransactions. Here then lies our disagreement.

Myself, and a few others, have said you do not have to grind in this game. You want to hold on to old equipment, hence you need materials for upgrading. I believe that the natural progression for any RPG is to progressively get new gear over the course of the game. It isn't required for you to use the same equipment for the rest of the game, but since you have chosen to do so, there are requirements for it.

I'm not upset. I'm just genuinely bewildered by your comments. But we can continue to have this conversation, sure. I don't mind.

In an RPG you are supposed to create or customize a character and how they look. That's also true for all games that offer character customization. Destiny 1 didn't have Infusion at launch and people complained about not being able to customize their character properly because they had to keep changing their armor to the highest light.

I am not sure why this is so complicated for you to understand. People will try to customize their character because the game offers this feature. They will then realize they need resources. Then a "Time Saver" microtransaction might help them to avoid having to play all the side content for it. That's the hook.

I heard later in the game some missions are level gated as well, but I didn't play far enough to reach that point.

You have been disproven time and again with your false claims. We get it, you do not like the game. You do not like Ubisoft. Move on, mate. You are just coming across as sad at this point.

What does he even need to prove? Have you even played the game? In order to do one of the very first missions in the game you need to be level 5 to even come close to killing the target. I tried at level one and after stabbing him 700 times with the worst combat possible I gave up because I was fucking bored and went and did side quests. I just want to sneak around, the combat is awful and the game keeps forcing me to kill people out in the open like the worst assasin ever. I'll be trading this in the second RDR2 comes out and even then I don't know if I'll hang onto it that long. For a game that is sitting on a shelf for $149AU including the season pass it's pretty disgusting how much filler shit is in the game this early into the journey

The levelling system is awful in which already I can't even just put on a pair shoes because.. I'm not at the right level. I can't wear shoes without going up a level. I'm already constantly behind the level requirement for gear I'm given and missions and I'm only now level 6 and up to the second island. My first AC game since 2 and I won't be coming back. The environment is beautiful and I'm enjoying that aspect and trying to get my $70AU worth which apparently isn't fucking enough for them.

I'm just going to quote that; not sure if this is the case but if this is true, you clearly bought the game without checking up any kind of information about it. But then, I don't really believe that.

People will try to customize their character because the game offers this feature. They will then realize they need resources
Are you actually being serious ?
Plot twist: this is how RPG works.
