Valfaris - A Heavy Metal Space Saga (Slain: Back from Hell dev, 2018, PC/console)

Disagreements over tastes in metal, that's like my bat signal.
Haha, then dive on in, arms flailing!

Seeing all of this awesome art is making me think I should go back and play Slain.
Came out recently on Nintendo Switch too ;)

Slain was leaning slightly too much towards the style end of the style vs. substance spectrum.
Fair. Valfaris aims to be very varied in terms of its encounters, but more on that in due course!

Until then... enjoy some combat on the battle-scarred landing pad of Valfaris

And some good old-fashioned ass-kicking

The only thing I did not like about Slain was the game save crash I had near to the end. Game itself was fun, hard and absolutely kick ass. This looks like it is going to have similar attributes, so, our can count me in

Full werewolf off the buckle
I can only hope this has an easy mode. Sounds lame, I know, but back before the big patch somehow I beat Slain. Afterwards, when it was supposed to be balanced better, I could barely make it a few levels.

Post from Matt, on the Steam Community - Link to Steam
Wanted to share it here as I knew you guys would find it interesting!
Hey everyone

Want to see what a Valfaris character looks like before it gets 2D-ified for its in-game appearance? Of course you do.

The triple-headed potbellied brute you see below is a Tomb Keeper. He keeps Valfaris' subterranean tombs nice and tidy by eviscerating anyone who dares stray into them.

TOMB KEEPER: BEFORE

TBuKSSf.gif

As you can see, it's rendered here as a low-poly 3D model. After the initial sketch concept phase, this is how Andrew [Andrew Gilmour – dev druid/art warlock] likes to start working on Valfaris' characters. When he's happy with how it looks, he extracts the pixels and sets about bringing it to life in the game.

TOMB KEEPER: AFTER

L88GeC9.gif

And, after its preliminary three-dimensional fling, here's the Tomb Keeper in all his flattened (but still fully enfattened) 2D pixellated glory. A hulking colossus of an adversary that towers formidably over Therion.

I should point out the game is still deep in development so everything you see here is work-in-progress and may not fully represent how ass-kickingly awesome the final version will be.

Oh, and I don't think it's too late to wish everyone a happy New Year and all the best for 2018!

Is there melee combat involved? Could you give some details? Thanks.
Valfaris will add to Slain's combat system, rather than replace it.
In Valfaris, the player will have a range of melee weapons available to them, including a traditional sword.

Heavy Metal as in the genre of music or the adult magazine? Not that it matters, granted I'm a huge fan of the magazine and this game looks amazing.

As cool as a great 16-bit original soundtrack epild be, I kinda want a soundtrack full of great existing tunes a bit more

I fcking love this. Art again 10/10. Growing up with pixel graphics this is like a wet dream bois. Sometimes indie >>aaa. Especially when you get older and don't have much time to play.

looks like their old game with a "new" skin

Just curious do you like that or not?

I haven't played their old game yet as there was a lot of criticism surrounding it. But the art style of the old one was 10/10 imo and I read that it is now quite enjoyable.

Hey guys, haven't checked in for a little while, but I come with exciting news!

Over the weekend Matt from Digerati managed to get some hands on time with Valfaris, and he's kindly recorded 30 minutes of tasty gameplay for us all to enjoy. It's the first video we've got of actual gameplay, so be sure to let us know what your thoughts are!

Head over to the link below, and don't forget to come back and comment your thoughts in the thread!

Yes! This looks like a wonderfully good time. Thanks for sharing the video. I never got the chance to play Slain but I think this will be a day one purchase for me. Love the art style and always enjoy a well made side scroller. Looking forward to it!

It's not too late to give the ol' girl a try whilst you wait for release.. ;)

We've been treated to a few more GIFs from within the Eco-Chambers and Hive areas of Valfaris - check them out here!

I'm on board for getting this when it releases. Awesome pixel art and badass metal music is always a winner for me.

Yeah man, I'm just as hyped - you can't beat some badass metal music to go along with the pixelated carnage!
Damn, it looks amazing.
Aye, that it does! If you haven't checked it out already, there's an awesome gameplay video available on YouTube here - it's definitely worth a watch!

We're showing off Valfaris at EGX 2018 - and not only that, but you can play it for yourself!

If you're local to the area, make sure to drop by. Say hi to the team, and jump into the role of Therion and shoot some guys to your hearts content!

We got some awesome coverage from PC Games N - "Valfaris is a wonderfully overblown shooter with heavy metal in its blood.", hell to the yeah \m/!

Has anyone had a chance to get their hands on any of the demos we've been fielding lately at shows, etc?

Let us know your thoughts if so - the more feedback the merrier!

Loved Slain. Love the look of this game. Can't wait to try it out at launch!

Maybe this has been answered or maybe it is not yet something you are publicly confirming/declining: physical release?

I mean, there's no official news but.. ;)

Boooooooooooo! That’s not what i wanted to hear. More like a ‘end 2018 release date’ 😊

Seriously though: take your time. Will buy for sure.

Well I come with some good news, although the game won't be releasing until 2019, the demo will be on Steam VERY soon. I'll update here when the time comes, but needless to say it's right around the corner!

I know it's not a full release, but it'll give you a chance to get stuck in a little earlier and try it out!

We got some new info on the weapon upgrade system shared on our official Steam community recently, check out the side by side (rank 1/rank 2) GIF below!

If you want to read the full story on it, check it out here.

Thanks for the update M Mr_D_

That pistol gif... can we expect improved shots (I see it goes from 1 to 3 shots) as well as improved fire rate for the other weapons? I mostly played Slain as a melee affair so I'm curious if there more of an emphasis on ranged combat in Valfaris?

I told you demo access would be coming very soon..

The Valfaris demo is live and ready to download!
It’s here! The Valfaris demo has landed and is ready to be downloaded and played right now, like, this very instant.
To download the demo, head to the Valfaris Steam page and clickety-click your mouse on the button handily labelled ‘Download Demo’. And away you go!
Note: The demo will be available for a LIMITED TIME ONLY and is scheduled to be closed at the end of the year i.e. 31 December.

These are just some of the things you’ll be able to do in the demo…
[] Experience the whole of the game’s first level – the Landing Pad
[] Decimate an array of accursed enemies
[] Wield the Hellwraith – a heavy weapon that drips blood and fires molten skulls
[] Discover cunningly concealed secret areas
[] Take on the Junk Gargoyle – a cycloptic boss with a penchant for scrap metal
[] Headbang (of course)
[] Treat your ears to a sample of the game’s OST, recorded by Curt Victor Bryant

We also vigorously encourage you to share the demo love by grabbing screenshots, recording videos, streaming, baking a Therion cake, getting ‘Valfaris demo is live’ tattooed on your body… anything to spread the word.

Finally, if after playing the demo you have a build-up of feedback in your brain that you’d like to share with us, you’ll find a ‘give feedback’ option at the end of the demo.

In non-demo related news, we’ve also launched a Valfaris website. It’s live now and can be perused at this location: https://valfarisgame.com/
Enjoy the demo!

Thanks for the update M Mr_D_

I can't speak too much on ranged vs melee, but there'll be 20 upgradeable weapons at your disposal throughout the game.

Tried the demo this morning before work. Pretty cool. Runs very well on my shitty laptop so I'll be interested to try it on my gaming PC. Very raw, feels like a new-age Turrican to me which is a good thing.. Some of the animations are fab as well (particularly enjoy using the energy sword and having the cleaved corpses walk a little bit before falling over.)

Seems like a demo is a great idea, hopefully it helps drum up interest.

Just played the demo and came to mention this. Amazing. Kinda like this style more than Slain but thats just preference. Whats this horror/cyberpunk genre called has it a name?

Another thing I thought the sword is pretty OP. You can slay the junk gargoyle by just rushing in and hitting it like 10 times and then finish with the machine gun (forgot the name).

But other than that I really like the upgrade system too. Will buy Valfaris for sure (if I dont forget about it by the time it releases)

There's a fantastic new article up over at the Valfaris Steam Community, we've been working with a design studio to bring Therion's gun (the one used in the main Valfaris title screen/art work we put out) to life. I've attached a photo, but you can read the full story on how it's coming together here!

Make sure to join the Steam Community whilst there, we're gonna keep posting the updates as it's made!

Thanks very much for the feedback - glad to hear it's running okay on the laptop!

Thanks man - I've passed on the feedback regarding the sword. Depending on the scenarios in game it is beneficial to use certain weapons over others though, so this could potentially just be a design choice for this particular boss.

No official name on genre really, if you fancy chatting to the devs themselves feel free to jump on the official Discord here, they're often found in the Valfaris channel - I'm sure they can give more insight!

Over at the Valfaris Steam community, we revealed a look at the game's otherworldly second stage: the dense jungles and hostile fauna of the Eco Chamber

A furious tableau of Hellfire rapid-fire from Therion and a cascade of jellies from the Eco Demon sub-boss:

How the hell does this look so good?! I love the shadow/lighting effects. The art direction is incredible too. I actually didn't even now about this today, as much as I frequent GAF and other places. The word definitely needs to get out!
