Sony forcing Japan only games to go through content inspections which are conducted in English

So Sony are even censoring games released only in Japan. the inspections are conducted in English, that means that these inspections are being done by westerners to decide what japanese gamers should and should not see in their japanese games.

This article from Niche Gamer was posted in another related thread and gives more context to the above tweet:
https://nichegamer.com/2018/10/27/n...ese-developers-to-censor-themselves-in-japan/

This is increasingly becoming the actual worse case scenario, where a platform holder is, to a degree, actually taking away games from a certain portion of their consumer base. The larger media outlets seem to be purposefully avoiding any actual coverage of this new policy. I just hope this issue gathers enough steam from fans and developers that Sony is forced to openly address the situation. As I mentioned in the related Senran Kagura thread, for now, I'll be directing my spending away from the Playstation.

This has to be due to the SJW-types infiltrating the HR/PR departments in these companies and spreading their BS.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that they have used the failure of the Vita to get this policy. "If you let the PS4 get all those awful games with sexy girls like the Vita did, it will hurt your brand!" And the VPs and such ate it up.

So basically releasing games on pc and switch will be the only option to avoid censorship? Problem is ps4 has a way too huge install base for these niche games to pass up sales on. Situation sucks all around.

I hope MS does the clever thing and offers all those japanese devs a new home. For their next console, that might really turn things around for them in Japan.

If they do this, plus their game pass thing which seems like a good value and aquiring of new studios might make me actually get an xbox next gen.

I love to see the day when this entire culture of going overboard with political correctness dies off.

This is even worse that just censorship. By forcing those subscriptions to be made in English they are hitting every game made in Japan and increasing costs for all small studios. And it's probably even worse for Japanese indie games.

Stuff like this is why I'm glad more and more Japanese developers are working on PC as well. Any changed made can be easily fixed.

This is getting interesting. This seems like a serious strategic mistake on the part of Sony. It will be interesting to see what happens longterm, but I can see things shifting greatly for Sony if they don't course correct.

The people in management that are allowing this to happen really need to step back and take a long look at this...

The problem is that we are constantly told to ignore them. "They are a small problem. Stop giving them attention! No one takes them seriously!" This sort of shit is the next step of what started at Treehouse, with game bloggers holding vendettas over their emotions being hurt.

What happens when you allow a few weeds to grow to seed in a field? They take over. As I posted elsewhere, it does not take many fanatics to begin affecting the values of the overall population.

Sony. Sony. Sony.

What the heck is going on over there? Is this in response to something in particular? Has there been a change in Japanese censorship laws? I just don't get it.

They are chasing developers into Nintendo's arms.

Sony. Sony. Sony.

Apparently Sony HQ in California is calling the shots now - the American branch was already bad in PS3 era where they blocked stuff like PSP remasters in West and now that they moved to Cali it's going to be a dark ride.

This part of the article made me go "WAT" and "WTF?"

Furthermore, Sony is confusingly asking Japanese developers to plead their approval only in English, making the process even more difficult for developers whose staff only speak or write in Japanese.

Never in my life did I think there would be a time when a version of a game that is uncensored is on Nintendo's platform and censored on Sony's platform. This timelines is all kinds of messed up. :messenger_unamused:

Yeah. Admittedly, we're only at a point where people are trying to suss out info from tweets and comments made in foreign languages, so I'm willing to keep an open mind. That said, my general take away is the developers currently being affected are about as unclear on this policy as the rest of us, at least the devs in Japan, anyway.

I sincerely hope this is an issue that can legitimately be addressed and not a situation where a company (or a division within a company) is choosing to arbitrarily attack certain products they personally find distasteful.

Seems like arrogant Sony is back now that they don't care for their portfolio to have enough variety and they don't need fans of niche Japanese games to support them.

I think it's time they learn another lesson in humility only this time i'm afraid it might be their last.

This is ridiculous. This goes beyond removing a silly mode in a Senran Kagura game.

And the fact that they are asking Japanese developers to submit their approval is english is a whole new level of wtf. Kinda ironic how Sony went from hero at the beginning of this gen to know its' villain.

I'd like to be as hopeful as you but given Sony's behavior in regards to certain things since the PS1 days this kinda seems like an attack on that type of content.

I think this is a good move for the industry as it will prompt developers to spread to more platforms. With a certain similarity in architectures and better availability of tools in general, this should be the perfect time to set up a toolchain for more platforms. Third parties need to embrace multiplatform development.

I wouldn't really consider myself hopeful in any regard, but there's a difference between corporate oversight and a corporate directive. One can usually be addressed; the other means, in this case, that certain consumers and devs are screwed. If Sony does remain silent and nothing changes, then I'll assume their purging of certain content is supported at the highest level.

That’s a very long shot, but if Microsoft doesn’t copy Sony(if they haven’t already) they could capitalize a rare opportunity to gain a big advantage over the market leader.

Also 10/10 for Nintendo for not bending their knee to censorship on the Switch.

Of course, much of the ERA members are applauding this policy because they personally don't like "borderline pedo" games. It's as if ignoring those games they find to be offensive isn't an option.

The PlayStation brand has been becoming harder and harder for me to support, because of shitty business decisions that Sony has been making... and this is another one.

Nintendo learned its lesson after the WiiU bombed. Microsoft made a much stronger effort to right its wrongs after the Xbox One launch disaster. Sony, meanwhile, knowing that it’s the king of the mountain right now, is making all of the worst calls.

— No backwards compatibility, or even an attempt at it, because allegedly nobody plays old games
— Sony quickly gave up on its short-lived PS2 on PS4 initiative
— Sony completely fumbled the 20th anniversary of the platform that made the company relevant in video games to begin with
— Sony avoided deserved criticism for charging for online play because it quietly announced it against the backdrop of the horrible Xbox One launch announcement
— Sony’s hubris has been on display during the last few E3 press events, but none compared to the pure shitfest that was E3 2018... where the audience was shuffled from room to room, pointless musical performances wasted many a viewer’s time, the in-between talking segments were more cringeworthy than anything we’ve seen since Ravi Drums 2008, and many were left asking “That was it?” at the end
— Sony begins denying licenses to completed games, appeasing its own new prudish approach

Sony has fallen far from being the scrappy company that worked so hard to compete with the likes of Nintendo and SEGA. There’s not a lot to like about Sony anymore, and that’s just sad.

Sony is really making me question purchasing PlayStation 5 with this ridiculous Western censorship.

Right there with you. I’m more interested in where Microsoft goes at this point, because Sony has done an exceptionally good job of turning my away as a consumer.

As Sony fan i am very much in a pickle here, i Was looking forward to spyro and kingdom Heart 3, but i wont support these strategies of censorship it stinks, this is the final nail in the coffin after Sony decided to shutdown, evolution studio and wipeout franchise. I Will not support any amount of Sony products until they get their act together. Im done and Will be spreading this to everyone i know and talk about it on communities.

This may be Microsoft's biggest opportunity since the early 360 days to grab a significant portion of the Japanese audience from Sony. If Phil Spencer tells all Japanese developers and the Japanese audience, "Don't worry, we won't force censorship on games after they are approved by the ratings board", things will get interesting to say the least.

Regarding a PS5, if Sony doesn't address this matter to some degree, then it's not even a question for me about passing on their new system. We potentially have a company that midstream in a product's life cycle suddenly decided to implement a new policy that affects both its consumes and content providers. I'd think most people would understand if this was a situation of them having to curb illegal content, but instead we seem to be dealing with a corporation randomly wanting to act as the morality police, above the various ratings boards that already serve as content gatekeepers.

Guess I'm going Switch only for now then. The tendrils of censorious psychos from the US (for the most part) seem to reach farther than I thought possible, it's impressive in a way. I know they've been frothing at the mouth to twist the neck of the anime industry, I guess through this they can finally reach the Japanese gaming industry at the very least. I'm not particularly counting on Nintendo either (they've got a history with this after all) but for now, they seem to let things be.

PC is the only place you get some guarantees now, especially with Steam's new policy and all. I was going to buy a Macbook-ish laptop soon, but I guess I'll go for something more...gaming oriented as a fail safe.

Once AGIAN Sony has become cocky and stupid because their system selling well just like early PS3 days because PS2 sold crazy well.

Edit: I'm actually happy now that Shin Megami Tensei V and Bayonetta 3 is Switch exclusive.

If they keep this up I guess I'll have to stop being a Playstation fan. The only consoles I've owned since the SNES have all been Playstation so I really hope they change course since I really don't want to drop them. This makes me feel really sad, but I suppose that's what I get for having an emotional attachment to a corporate brand. T_T

I hear you, man. Over the last 3 generations, I've gone with the PS2, PS3, and PS4. However, if you want to see the brand that you stuck with for such a long time change, then you need to vote with your wallet and walk away. Continuing to give Sony your money will only encourage them to enforce their censorship.

Wow, arrogant Sony has hit ridiculously hard from around the middle of this generation. I imagine Microsoft has good chances with the next XBOX if this continues. Have to give cred to Microsoft in how they've turned around after the XBONE disaster, so if Sony starts thinking they're the gatekeeper, I might just as well buy the next XBOX and drop the next Playstation. Really ruining the Sony brand for me. And I've owned PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 as my main consoles. Leaves a lot of opportunities for Microsoft and Nintendo imo.

I skipped on the PS4 and Pro this Gen because frankly my PC, old Xbone and the Switch have me covered. The chances the PS5 isn't either BC or has "re-masters" is about 100% so I will just get one of those.

That's what my plan was. If they start censoring everything all bets are off. I won't buy another compromised thing that was altered so as not to offend the easily offended. I didn't buy the games Nintendo's Treehouse censored, and I sure won't buy a PS5 to play games Sony censors.

I don’t think Microsoft would allow those gsmes on their system uncensored either though and Japanese games usually don’t sell well on Xbox anyway. Maybe something will change at the start of a new generation if Sony continues to keep screwing up but I doubt it. I’m thinking PC or even switch would be more desirable to those Japanese developers.

I really, really hate that literally everyone is shamelessly catering to hypocrital Western philosophies. Absolutely loathe it. You can have a murder simulator, but women in bikinis are offensive when content on Instagram and Twitter are just as, if not more suggestive or “offensive”.

Wonder if devs in Japan would hire foreigners who speak Japanese to negotiate on their behalf.

I really don't like how my bastion is being warped by american puritanistic values.

I remember when they said 'Calm down, no one is trying to take away your games'.
I still take that stance, but stories like these aren't helping the case. I tend to import a lot of games so perhaps it's a blind spot of mine.

Really sucks that Sony is acting this way for no apparent business reason.

I mean the switch is basically the only portable option and these games dont really much require much horsepower so Sony is pretty much giving up on that entire market. If Nintendo maintains their current hands off approach they're poised to pick up a very active userbase solely for themselves.
