Ironically, Kotaku doesn't understand the concept of NPCs at all; or further proof that their staff doesn't really know much about games.

U mad bro? In answer to your question, no. They aren’t pushing a political ideology.

It's not an agenda. It's called an opinion. Please learn to respect others'.

Well, I try to discuss with my family and friends and do not have to TELL them anything. So we're pretty happy, thank you very much for your concern.

Apologies I was referring to Sannajki not you as the insufferable one

In answer to your question, no. They aren’t pushing a political ideology.

Neither am I, I'm pushing a cultural ideology (being a goddamn moderate individual instead of an extremist like you). As would they be. So, sorry. That doesn't wash.

Calling moderates fascists also doesn't wash when you have people on this site butthurt that this exists...

Wow, you know me SO well. Thank you for opening my eyes and making the world a better place... :messenger_winking:

Okay, no problem. Sorry, got a little bit confusing so I misread your comment and feared Sannajki got a new team mate.

All good sorry I should have been more clear but it's hard to post from mobile so got lazy in my typing

The pursuasive strategy of being ridiculous and keep ridiculing yourself won't earn you any favours or audience here, besides the one that will mock you.

Jus' sayin'.

Y'know, I don't actually think you're a real doctor. I can't put my finger on why.

Also my heart hurts for your daughter. No one should have an alt-righter for a dad :(

I'll keep that in mind if I ever intend on being ridiculous. Nor do I give a damn about some alt-righters' opinions.

Is there any chance, even if in the distant future, your posts would contain something approaching a rational argument? Do you even know what that is?

Something to be found from very, very few people on this site anymore. Nobody who uses dumbass three letter terms like 'SJW' and 'NPC' for a start.

Why?

I'm howling from the hypocrisy of this. You do realize you're posting on a forum where every second post features the term 'SJW' or 'NPC' right?

Your point being? I didn't use any of those words and tried to present my opinion in a civilised and calm way and still didn't get any respect from you.
And even if every second post features those terms - am I not allowed to go another way and discuss on my own terms?

And yet here you are, persisting on the very forum where "very few people" know what a proper argument is.

That you would think using acronyms would preclude anyone from debating in rational terms shows you have little to no idea what rational stands for.

I don't think the point the article is trying to make is invalid, it's why games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with it's A-Life AI tries to simulate NPC behaviour instead of scripting it. Having a giant open world where somehow everything revolves around the player character can be a bit jarring, and there's a lot of middle ground between that and a fully simulated world. Writing can make a big difference too, for example I think The Witcher 2 is written in a way where the NPCs don't feel like they just stand around waiting to give you quests all day, and there are events happening all around you that are completely out of your control, and only serve as the backdrop to Geralt's story. BioWare is much worse at that kind of writing, they do too much hero worship.

Watch out for Schreier, we got a badass over here!

Rules for thee, not for wee!

They can post their outrage drivel on the daily, but gosh forbid gamers vent their frustrations to a billion dollar corporation and their decision makers. They will be okay corpo knight (when you are not belittling them about crunchy cakes first world work problems on your slave-made iPhones though amirite?).

The funniest part? How much they "contributed" within 24 hours. Clearly they have no life or job.

The NPC meme is an Alt Right meme? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It’s incredibly funny that NPC is an childish insult but Nazi and Alt Right are said to opposition with a serious face. There is a ton of room in politics between Alt Right and the Far Left. NPC is less offensive but just as childish as Nazi or Alt Right to people who aren’t actually either of those things.

Maybe we can all agree to not use these insults? No, that wouldn’t happen for either of the groups.

I dunno, the "severity" of the terms are on completely different scales. With NPC, it is used to criticize how you are just using the same terms and thought processes devoid of any critical thinking. However, you can learn to have thoughts of your own and convey those thoughts in a meaningful way. With Nazi/Alt-Right, it is a direct attack at the core identity of the person. You are being told you are not better than a racist murderer who despises large swaths of humanity and want them removed.

As a liberal myself, NPC is a "meme" that holds some water (even if it is a tad childish). Calling people Nazi/Alt-Right is on a far different level and should never be normalized.

I agree with that. Perhaps saying NPC was less offensive wasn’t enough?

Personally I don't think it is simply "less offensive" due to the sheer difference in scale between those terms. Though each can have their own opinion, I was just letting mine known. Apologies for any confusion.

No issues here. I lack the context of severity with Alt Right and Nazi for example as political insults simply because I don’t take its speaker seriously. As in their lose credibility as soon as they say it imo.

The NPC is to me anyway, a joke.

NPC might have originated with the alt right, I don't know enough of the history, but I'm happy to use it for automatons on both sides.

People learned that getting that label to stick on people shuts them up or causes others to pressure to shut up... and some people are now abusing it and trying it as an easy low hanging fruit in a discussion.

Half-true. Liberal labels are character assassination to win an argument without debating. The scale of the two types of ad hominem is nowhere near remotely comparable. You call someone an NPC, life goes on as usual. Someone says something that doesn't sit well with liberals: he's a pedophile sexist rapist fascist bigot. Good luck escaping that type of labeling without being doxxed and fired.

I'm not nearly as enthralled with RDR2 as most, but I think the NPCs in this game are really impressive and I certainly find them far more real, sentient and intelligent than Kotaku writers.

I know you've been banned but I know you'll come back not logged in to see the replies to you as you seem like that kind of person.

I've never seen a poster make as many generalizations and assumptions on other people as you have in your short career on Neogaf.

You are identity politic incarnate and deem anyone that doesn't disagree with you as alt right.

You strike me as the kind of person that forces their toddler to go straight vegan and brainwash them to identify as the opposite sex.

I feel sorry for the people in your immediate vicinity.

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Westerns are a complex and problematic genre tied to a violent history that gave rise to the myth of the gun as an egalitarian tool (e.g., the oft-quoted “God made man, Sam Colt made them equal”) and rugged, self-reliant masculinity.

Um, what?

I'm not upset. I just think it's fuckin' retarded.
Even if I wasnt calm, how is my argument flawed? People who use the term NPC's to describe actual people non ironically are just idiots.

I guess the ol' "Alt Right" is running out of politically inspired "insults" like Snowflake, SJW, Cuck and more of these useless "insults".
You missed the point my friend, people use NPC or any other term because it triggers certain group of people, its the reaction to such an innocuous word that's hilarious not the word itself, just look at how upset you got, its super effective and why people exploit it

Up until a few weeks ago i didn't even know about the npc meme, i just found it amusing how the people it was targeted at got so riled up and tried to dismiss it despite being all worked out about it

What is it about the word that drives some of you mad?

While there is facile thinking behind some of the fashionable critical ideas of 20 something urban progressives who write about games, the forum you linked to there is reactionary, nurturing mostly imaginary resentments via utterly vapid outrage peddling. It's not surprising to see that go hand in hand with a populist reference to "common folk" who are in this case just culture warriors hiding unreflective attitudes behind appeals to collective wisdom or common sense against caricatures of political opponents. There is enough productive discussion on that forum to be a moderating influence for the more thoughtful people engaging with objects of ridicule but for most I suspect it's confirming and reinforcing prejudices. Luckily "ideological bubbles" are formed by people who also participate in the broader cultural conversation - in the long run I see attitudes about contested ideas moving in a positive direction. I suspect the average poster there in 2014 would be a lot less sensitive to the relevant issues as they are today in 2018. Conceptually there's even been a significant convergence in reasoning but it gets lost in the tribal noise about how unreasonable the other side is using the most extreme people as exemplars or creating them through uncharitable reading.
