Still rocking a standard i5-2500 here but went out and bought a Ryzen 5 2600x and Asus Prime 470-Pro mobo today. Slowly building up for my next build. Don't plan on updating my 1080p monitor anytime soon and want to keep my specs around that. Plan on moving over my GTX 1060 I have as well with the new system.

I built my last PC for Skyrim back in 2011 so she's a bit aged. I've upgraded the video card since that time and it still runs most games from mid-high. Any upgrade recommendations other than the vcard? Money is tight so I'd prob save some $ for an upgrade that would give me as much time as my current build has but still leaning towards budget prices (if possible).

I'm assuming you're on Z68 since you have 2500k and your RAM speed wasn't listed so I'm assuming you have DDR3 1600.

Is your CPU already overclocked?

Here are some possible upgrades, but I'm not sure if it will be worth it depending on how soon you plan on doing a new build.

CPU: you could upgrade to 3770K giving you 4 extra threads. I'd only consider this if you find a great deal. This will require an up to date bios allowing Ivy Bridge CPUs to work on Z68 motherboards.
RAM: you could upgrade to DDR3 2133 RAM(or 2400, if you also upgrade to 3770K). Alternatively you could attempt overclocking your current RAM to 2133 which would provide some performance boost at no additional cost(assuming the overclock works).

Perf. boosts for DDR3 1600 to 2133 and 2500K to 3770K can be seen below

Since you're on a budget you may have considered AMD GPUs, but I'd suggest sticking with nVidia even if it costs a little more because of less driver overhead, especially if you stick with 2500K. Take a look at the below example.

Because of the above, if you're looking at GTX 1060 vs RX 580 I'd go with the 1060(or wait for 2050/2060 if you want to hold out for a bit).

Awesome. How much was the 2080TI?

Fuck man, did you only sell your own kidney or those of your kids too? The 400c/q is a cute and compact case, a little cramped in the cabling-compartment though, but the fan controller just werks.

My Old PC is i5 2500k ,8gb Ram and a gtx 580.

Looking at Intel prices i decided to go AMD.

Keeping my PSU and CASE from old build.

Gone 2700x, b450 Tomahawk mobo, gskill 3200mhz 16gb RAM

Last month picked up a used 1080ti and a new SSD 500gb Samsung 960.

That should do me for while. Don't game at 4K currently, only 120HZ 1080p.

Hoping so, I hear a lot of people concerned about the i9 of temps, but they are all in stress tests so here’s hoping.

Lol, thankfully not yet, may do for a new monitor soon though! I love the clean look of the case and the easy access door/window is great.

Yep from the reviews i read 5ghz on the 9900 was only feasible with a full water loop, which is a shame since the 9700 can hit 5ghz+ fairly easily on closed loop coolers
Im curious what oc you'll reach with your setup, either way you got a mighty impressive beast rig i could only dream off, happy building :messenger_ok::messenger_bicep:

What are you using it for?

Speaking out of experience, in case you pick a 2700X it's important *not* to skimp on the motherboard and to perhaps read up on buildzoid's in-depths on the X470's electric designs, your PBO performance might depend on it. This is less important if you choose not to push it's performance, in that case you'll also won't have to get an additional cooler as the prism is actually a very competent one in itself with even a fanspeed toggle on the cooler itself!

Due to the way AMD designed fclk to be synchronous to the (undoubled) memory clock it becomes both very picky of higher speed memory modules as well as rewarding it's use with a faster communications bus between the CCX's. This is not very important to the 2700X (a zeppelin only has two CCX's) but can help greatly for the Threadrippers (especially the new 'WX' ones where two of the nodes won't have a memory controller of their own).

Lastly, if you start picking memory remember that you'll get the most value if you pick an even CAS latency for AMD's chips as they default to gear down mode at effective clocks exceeding 2600mhz. Some motherboards support manually disabling it but it always caused mine to bootloop and fail posting and GA x470 Ultra Gaming ones do this recovery thing where they not only clear but absolutely destroy all non-factory data from the bios (real fun if you have TPM/secureboot/bitlocker active).

If you're in the US and are looking to buy soon check out eBay's front page for a 10% off coupon(expires in within the next 12 hours). Newegg on eBay doesn't sell the 2700x but you could pick up a 1700 for $162 using today's coupon which is a massive discount over the 2700x while not loosing too much performance. 16 threads at the price of an i3.

Music Production via Pro Tools, Maschine, and Akai MPC and 4K video editing.

Appreciate the information blast, for the MOBO with the 2700x build, I have a Asus X470-F in the cart. I'll make a choice by Monday. I probably wont be playing new titles on the PC, most of my titles range around PS3/360 era PC ports. I was just playing homeworld the other day along with Star Trek Voyager's Elite Force.

Those tools should employ enough worker-threads to make that an attractive deal, maybe it's worth checking for experiences with process interrupt latencies or reviews that employ latencymon as audio editing can be sensitive to slow interrupt processing. Of course, getting PTSD on the Gardens of Khadesh mission or taking a stroll on the Voyager (aka the Neelix murder simulation mode) should be a breeze for this machine, in most cases it'll be your choice of GPU that affects the more modern games.

I'm leaning towards upgrading my GPU in my current gaming rig instead of building out a new machine. Right now I've got a 4690k running at stock clocks and cooler, 8gb of DDR3 RAM and a 970 GTX. I have a Coolermaster EVO fan that's still sitting in the box so I'm figuring I can install it and overclock that 4690k to hell and back. My PC is hooked up to my 4k 60hz HDR TV. I'm thinking I could justify around $500 or so on a new GPU so I'm kind of leaning towards a 2070 to sort of hedge my bets on DLSS and RTX and still have a sizeable upgrade in raw performance. I'd most likely play games at 1440p-1800p on high since native 4k 60hz is going to be nearly twice the price. I don't really want to invest in more DDR3 ram unless I can track some down dirt cheap. Thoughts?

You should be fine. I had a pretty similar set up but with a 3570 OC'd until a couple of months ago when I upgraded to a 8600K and a 1070ti (that meant, of course, that I had to upgrade mobo and RAM as well). I play mostly at 1080P even on my 4K TV because it seems to upscale better than from other resolutions that I can use reliably and still hit 60 FPS consistently. To be honest, the upgrade didn't feel that great. I don't regret it since I'm hoping it will last me at least 4 years and maybe I will swap the GPU eventually (not for the 2000 series but the next).

Just a few games are really demanding on CPU and actually bottleneck my performance. From the top of my head: Warhammer: Total War, AC Origins (on some sections with many NPC's it dips into lower 50's) and BF1 online (64 players).

I think you can try that upgrade you are describing and if it doesn't give you the performance you are expecting you can eventually upgrade the rest of your components. The 2070 should be good for a while, specially if you are not seeking 4k@60FPS.

Good idea to upgrade that GPU. At that price and resolution range the RTX 2070 is the best choice right now.

If anyone is looking for a new video card, B&H is selling at EVGA GTX 1070 Ti with a $150 off coupon and free copy of Monster Hunter World right now.
It's on backorder but my order went through. I think this is a solid pickup.

That seems like a good deal but it's the Shabbath and the online portion of the store is closed. I'll try in two hours when the store "reopens". Thank you for the link!

had my replacement RTX 2080 FE for 5 days now. so fingers crossed this one doesn't crap out. my first one only lasted 4 days. really happy with it otherwise. temps are good and the card is super quiet. i think the FE cards are much better looking than the others.

edit; also i have a question regarding case fans. my current case has 4x140mm fans. 3 front + 1 rear. I'm tempted to upgrade my case to an Fractal Define S2 which comes with 3x140mm fans so i'd like to reuse my existing fans. i'd probably stick one in front or bottom and put 3 on top.

the thing is i'm worried about dust. for those with fans on the top of their case with open vents how is dust inside the case? top fans would likely be exhausting air but then that'd mean i'd have 4x140mm exhausts vs 3-4x140mm intake. would that mess up the pressure and suck more dust in? i regularly clean my case out with an electric duster so it's not a huge issue but still i'm a bit concerned.

Dust isn't a conductor (unless you play games in a coalmine or steel mill) and so it won't do much other than foul the cheapest of fluid bearing fans, and slowly smother heatsinks, just clean it out when you notice temps getting bad or the inside starts looking like the great barrier reef.

I have a 1080p monitor and a 4K one. I was thinking of replacing the 1080p one with a 1440 model, as I realise my 1080ti isn't going to be able to run newer games at 60fps in 4K going forward.

Is this an incredibly stupid idea? And if it isn't, any recommendations on which monitor I should choose? Preferably 27 inch.

Go easy on me, I'm somewhat of a noob.

Going for a refresh on a 670 + i5-750 that has served me well over the past few years.

I've got this so far - https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/ckKyZR. Anything I should change?
What will be your gaming resolution? Anyway, possible for you to get a 1070ti near that price range?

That's actually a wise choice considering 4K is very expensive, both in terms of money and performance. 1440p is definitely the way to go with a 1080ti and will serve you well for a few years. Not really know that much about monitors but take a look at Acer Predator XB271HU and Asus PG279Q. They will serve as a good jumping on point for you to begin your 1440p @ 27" monitor search.

I have an LG 4k 27" monitor and a Samsung CHG70 1440p 144hz monitor on my twin GTX 1080 system and once you play game at 144hz you wont go back to 4k 60fps.

Probably not - the 1070TI prices in Canada are around 80-100$ more.

The last part (CPU) is being delivered in about 1 hour or less. So thought I would upload a few pics of my last build (that I am currently still using) before its all dismantled and replaced. It had a good run!

IMGUR Link

Edit: well that took a long time to build, tidy, setup. But my god does it look the part. Running auto OC at the moment as I haven’t had time to run proper benchmarks. It’s set me up as 5.0Ghz on cores 1-3 and 4.9 on the rest.

I play a lot of sea of thieves and with my 3770k I was hitting about 45-70fps on max settings with my 2080ti. It’s not around 140fps locked. With settings turned down I’m seeing a 299fps cap. This thing is a beast. I never realised just how much the 3770k was throttling me.

Awesome set up. How does it do 4k?

Does it struggle with any games at all?
Just finished some benches and doubt I can get any higher than 5ghz without a lot more hours/day of tweeking. Not worth it for an extra 100Mhz on a couple cores.

Just downloading forza horizon 4 and will hook it up to my 4K TV. So far though. Going from a 3770k @ 4.3Ghz, 1600mhz DDR3 and the RTX 2080ti to an 990k @ 5Ghz, 4000mhz DDR AND THE RTX CARD. I’m seeing about double to triple the performance on most games in 3440x1440.

Sea of thieves jumped from 45-65 FPS on max to 140-190fps on max. Never realise just how cpu bound that game really is.

Edit: definitely no signs of struggle at all, I’m dying to see how much it buckles with raytracing when it’s launched.

Edit edit: Cinebench is giving me 2090 score.

I see you left out the 3.5' cage entirely, using the 2.5' slots in the back with a daisy-chained power cable is a real pain in the ass.

Those upper exhaust fans probably work better without the magnatic cover on top.

Gsync takes strain off of the GPU by handling the screen tearing through the hardware right?
*sync allows the monitor to obey commands to alter it's internal vertical refresh rate, this means it will be tuned to the framerate of whatever card is showing effectively eliminating tearing without having to resort to workarounds like V-sync or triple buffering which can introduce a latency.

You know a simple yes or no would actually work better than this?

Yeah that cage is no good when trying to cable manage, under that hood I have the rgb fan hub. I have no drives in back as of yet. Using a 512mb M.2 and an external USB HDD for now.

Edit: I just tested a couple of games in 4k, both sea of thieves and Forza ran very similar. Max settings saw me running just over 100fps never going lower than 90fps in sea of thieves. Forza was a bit higher. Once I started dropping some settings to around mid that boosted up to around >150fps. Will try a simpler game like quake champions to see how it fares for 4k 144fps.

Thinking of RMA’ing the AIO cooler. I phoned both overclockers and ASUs and neither can just provide a replacement fan. Anyone know if this will pass an RMA? It’s driving me crazy lol.

The case is well ventilated and spacious enough for air-cooling. An 'ayo' cooler only sounds logical if you need to move the radiative body away from the case when it's too compact (like in those cereal-box sized machines), and they have a lot of moving parts like a pump and silicone tubing that can fail.

Edit: Noboru Wataya Noboru Wataya sounds like the fan is off-balance or the bearing is messed up, isn't the fan a standard size?

Is there any point in upgrading to 32GB of RAM if all you do is game?

Until console games have like 24GB of RAM or more I don't think anything more than 16GB of system ram for gaming is needed.

I remember watching some videos on it and there being no performance gain above 16GB.
