First hands on impressions of Playstation Classic are going up.

I’ve heard that most of the games are the Euro versions, I.e. pal 50fps ones. That’s an instant no buy for me. Plus the emulation is spotty and bare bones without features even amateur emulators have :(

I really wanted to buy one this year but I’m just going to wait to see if it gets opened up some how :(

From what I've been hearing, the two most common complaints are that the package is barebones and that the emulation may have some issues.

Personally, I also find this era of gaming the hardest to go back to, due to how outdated all of these games feel now compared to modern games. NES and SNES still feel like timeless classics, but maybe not the PSX.

They're using an open-source emulation + ARM SOC, not a Playstation TV after all.

One of the biggest software/hardware companies ever, with some of the most experienced engineers in the industry, and they are using open-source stuff (when they have POPS) and crappy chinese hardware.

Unbelievable.

Haha that means it's easier to hack in more games...right?

Seems like the controller is pretty solid although I share the video-maker's opinion that Sony should've gone with a Dualshock.

I can't say I'm surprised with basic emulation and very basic UI with no extra features. The whole package looks like Sony wanted to spend as little money as possible.

I think the regular emulators are far superior to what they are selling.
p.s. am I crazy or Nes/Snes mini library is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than this?

This whole thing reeks of a low effort cashgrab.
I don't doubt it will sell decently based on nostalgia alone but both hardware and software are lacking

This thing ran into the same issue as Playstation All Stars Battle Royale. Unlike NES and SNES, a lot of the "classic" games people associate with Ps1 aren't actually owned by Sony. Crash, Spyro, Castlevania, a whole bunch of Square games, Tomb Raider, etc none of them are owned by Sony and if their respective owners don't want them on the system (because, for example, they would rather have people buy the new remakes) then there's little Sony can do about it other than filling the gaps with stuff no one really asked for.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
The library of games they chose is really gonna sink this thing. The NES / SNES Classic did so well because they included games people actually wanted to play, games that held up extremely well, and games that were iconic on the hardware.

I'm still getting mine basically just for the controllers (surely someone will hack a driver together to work on PC, seems inevitable) and for the off-chance that someone will figure out how to add more games via USB.

Otherwise, if I had any inkling at all to play any PS1 games there are much better ways to do it. At least this system has a somewhat intuitive looking menu and features for managing save states and memory cards.

You're not crazy, SNES library consisted largely of all the most acclaimed and best selling games with only a few major MIA's (Chrono Trigger and Donkey Kong Country 2, and Dragon Quest 5 for Japanese version), while PS1 Classic actually has some strait of bad games (like the Rainbow Six's PS1 port) and included the lesser installment in some franchises (Twisted Metal 1 over 2 or 3 is baffling). Also the Japanese version of PS1 Classic has a slightly better library IMO.

I wonder if Sony were trying to emulate the feeling of buying a random retro PSX bundle on eBay with their choice of games?

You're not crazy, this library fucking sucks. I'll wait to see if it gets homebrewed out of the ass so we can actually install the good stuff.

I still can't believe they choose these games.

NO RE2
NO GT
NO Medieval
NO Suikoden 2
NO FF9
NO Legend of Dragoon
NO Crash
NO Destruction Derby fucking 2
NO Silent Hill
NO Vagrant Story
NO Chrono Cross
NO Xenogears
NO Tomb Raider 1 or 2

list goes on and on and on

This is like a low effort cash grab. Sony, this is an insult to all mature and intelligent PS1 fans. It's sad honestly. If they would include the really good games, I'd gladly purchase this item for 200 or even 300 buckaroos. What a missed oppotunity.

Looks like a henkaku PS TV does a far better job than this as it can play every PS1 game, using DS3/DS4 controllers with analog sticks, options for image scaling, filtering etc. The Playstation Classic looks quite pretty though, but that price is a bit too high for what it offers.

Sony should of skipped ps1 and went to ps2 classic. Would of had dual shocks and there are a lot more PS2 games that are "classic" then PS1 games IMO.

Also the line up isn't the best, especially when you look at the top 10 for Sony and compare it to the games they put on the system.

Majority of GOG games I have are from that era. Computer game strides were huge during that time

So this thing is using a retroarch to emulate the games rather than Sony's own emulator.

lol

Correct me if I'm wrong but at least half those games are also avalaible on the Psn store. They could have added an option to sign in into your profile and dl/buy them on the storefront. I too would have paid 200-300$ easily if the controllers were wireless and it had trophy support...

I appreciate your response. Most, if not all of these games unfortunately are not available on PS4.

NO RE2 - NO
NO GT- NO
NO Medieval- NO
NO Suikoden 2- NO
NO FF9 YES
NO Legend of Dragoon - NO
NO Crash - NO
NO Destruction Derby fucking 2- NO
NO Silent Hill- NO
NO Vagrant Story- NO
NO Chrono Cross- NO
NO Xenogears- NO
NO Tomb Raider 1 or 2 - NO

I get what you are trying to express, but my PS3 is old and broken because I stressed it too much with collardudy. I would gladly buy these games on the PSN if they where available.

PS classic comes with two controllers, a neat UI with great save features, actual 3D games and classics unlike NES's 2D games.....It's only $99.99, what exactly did people want at that price? One controller with analog and rumble is already too much money, farless two...

As for the games, people have a problem only because PS had so many great games, you definitely won't please everybody there, but surely, if you can't find some classics to play or love here, I'm not sure said persons were too much interested in the classic to begin with......It covers many genres and has some of the best rated games on PS1...(Tekken 3, MGS, FF7 etc..)....Also, there's no way this reviewer expected the crash series after everybody is getting their fix on the remade version, which has been selling donkeyloads btw.....So most persons have played a better/overhauled version of that recently...

I am getting it to put in on the shelf next to the Nintendo offerings, lol. But agree with most of what you said.

Most the SNES and NES classic games are on the Wii U and New 3DS Virtual Console, some like Secret of Mana even had remakes coming out, and yet.....
This is the problem with the PS1 classic, it seems Sony missed the whole point.

Also no Ape Escape due to no analog sticks :(

The lineup is just not good enough even though I was massively hyped upon announcement. Wild Arms? Cool Boarders? Including games like that feels like a waste considering what was left on the table. Jumping Flash could easily go as well imo.

Crash, Spyro, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, RE2, Silent Hill, Klonoa, Dino Crisis, Parappa, SoTN... you could name games all day. IDK about any potential business reasons why the list is the way it is but it's just not that exciting the way it is.

A listing of licenses for open-source software accessible in the PlayStation Classic’s menu said that it uses the open-source PlayStation emulator PCSX ReARMed.

Alright, a bit surprised it's not using their in-house emulator, but RetroArch is different thing though. It's a frontend for emulators and supports multiple emulators that have been ported to use it. Its Beetle PSX emulator would mop the floor with PCSX ReARMed but I'm sure PS Classic doesn't have the hardware to run that.

I agree. And no Crash (the best selling PS game) or GT or Driver (number 10 on the list). If the issue is licensing then don't do it. Just makes the product feel more like a quick cash in. Not to mention the copying of Nintendo's branding. Said it in the other thread but come up with different branding then "classic". PS Retro, PS revisted whatever. Its almost as if Sony wants to confuse classic buyers into thinking its the same product line as the NES/SNES.

The original Playstation has far more variety and iconic franchises than anything on NES or SNES. How many people to this day STILL love MGS and FFVII? Square got away with not remaking FFVII for years longer than they should have because people had faith in them to deliver.

I fully expect the Playstation Classic to be a monster hit, bigger than the NES and SNES classic combined.

Another thing to add, anyone looking to hack this system needs to take into account how much memory it has. I don't think it will come with a lot of flash memory.

With NES/SNES games they are a few MB each, while PS1 games are 100's of not 1GB even. The games already take up close to 8GB on the system itself. It won't be like the NES/SNES where you can load up 100's of games onto because they are so small. If the thing only has 8GB of Flash you might not even be able to load up more than 1 or 2 extra games on it.

It does have USB ports so MAYBE you can load up on USB but lets see if Sony blocks it somehow.

With any luck though, hackers will find a way to remove the pre-installed games or overwrite them with things we actually want to play.

It just means if there is only 8GB of flash memory, you'll only ever be able to have 20-25 games installed at one time.
