ITT: We celebrate Nintendos true handheld...

One life.. One love.. So there can only be one king:
new-3ds-2015-gif.gif

This little fella just keeps on trucking as it pushes out all 240 of its ps in a 4K world mainly because of how many things it does get right like feeling great in the hands, being really durable, having an ace battery life and last but not least an absolute shed load of quality games. Even with its lack of grunt its nigh on a perfect handheld as it ticks all the right boxes for what you'd want, hence the true king.

Was watching this video:

And even though they'd never do it I'd be up for a beefed up spec with larger screens running at a crisper res to play the entire catalogue in the ultimate way. That said Nintendo did make the awesome GB Micro at the end of its lifecycle so there may be hope for a slimmer metal bodied n3DS that turns the sexiness all the way up:

nintendo_3ds_2.jpg

Because I'd buy one. So come on people, take a moment to appreciate greatness and possibly even share your greatest memories and experiences with the withered technology that bore profitable fruit.

Tons of exceptional games on such a little system. That C-stick on the N3DS was pure crap, though. Replaced it with a PSP analog nub after the rubber got torn (100s of hours in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate) and now it's perfect.

What were some of your favs for this system Leonard Washington Leonard Washington ?

I've used my 3DS as a DS machine, too. I have over 40 different DS puzzle games. One bummer is that 3DS didn't have nearly as many. However, there's a really fun one called Puzzles & Dragons which includes a Super Mario Bros-themed version, complete with its own characters, items, etc. Definitely recommended if you like puzzle games.

Also, which games do you think had/have the best 3D? Even though it was done simply, I liked how Pilot Wings and Fire Emblem Awakening used the 3D effect.

The New 3DS is easily my favorite handheld of all time. It's death will formally mark the end of my favorite Nintendo era. Loved the games, 3D, streetpass, customization, and the form factor is just perfect.

Sadly, my screen is getting bits of dust or something that wont come off and they dont sell regular new 3DS units anymore. Might have to send it into Nintendo or something. I have a huge backlog but those couple of specs are just too distracting. I dont even know how it happened since I'm super careful with it.

The 3ds was my least favourite handheld ever. I have almost every model (except New2dsXl and 2ds) and in my opinion they all are highly overpriced and outdated for its time.

My favourite games on 3ds were: Rune Factory, Resident Evil Revelation, Mario Kart 7, Animal Crossing, TLoZ A Link Between Worlds and Shin Megami Tensei series.

I was very disappointed by: Mario&Luigi, Pokemons, Fire Emblem series, TLoZ Triforce, Metroid Federation, Bravely Default/Second.

3DS shows that you a system doesn't have to be powerful to be a great gaming system. Vita was vastly more powerful than 3DS but Vita has died while 3DS still going. Games is all great gaming ever needs.

Came into this thread expecting the Gameboy Advance SP...

I was always really glad the GBA SP got made. They finally, at the very last opportunity, made the perfect Game Boy.

I put so many hours into GBA, the original ugly DS fell flat for me trying to push Mario 64 without an analog stick (huh?)

Then the DS got a castlevania and I got over it lol

I think 3ds games were vastly cheaper to produce compared to vita and ps4. Due to the graphics. So developers were able to take more risks creatively without breaking the bank. Producing great games was feasible to alot more developers.

I agree great games is all you need.

My personal favorite 3DS game: Fantasy Life.

A great mix of RPG elements, cute storytelling, interesting characters, and some light MMO elements as well all came together beautifully.

I'm planning on picking up a New 3DS sometime next year. Should I get the regular size or the XL? I'm leaning towards regular size, as I've heard the bigger screen on the XL just makes the low resolution more obvious.

I have to say, the 3DS made a surprising turnaround. It has become a nice system indeed. Sadly, it wasn't as successful as the DS but I think Nintendo are happy with it overall. It's just a bit frustrating that their "main" model is the New 2DS XL. You can't really buy the regular New 3DS anymore (at least in Germany).

The 3DS included great ideas that nobody cared about to mention afterwards but that certainly made an impression in the subconscious of people. The AR cards laid foundations on the possibilities for AR games and applications.
Also collecting Miis was fun, going out on street carrying the device and coming back home finding out al the new Miis encountered while youe were out.
I appreciated the 3D effect actually and always play with the 3D on. The first game were you really notice how useful this could be was Super Mario 3D Land, platforming is way easier if you can tell the distance of objects in Z axis.
But the device itself feels old, (I find my Majora's Mask edition too heavy and bulky keeps sliding from my grip, being hard to play while laying on bed ie.) the screens too low res. and cheap speakers. (haven't tried the New 2DS XL though might have solved those but without 3d :(
Also making games for portable devices involve a certain different design practice where objects need to be bigger to be recognizeable, something that I feel gets lost on the Switch since games have the same design practices as a big screen game only on smaller screen.

I always disliked the DSLites dpad as it felt too mushy and had weak diagnols so I played a lot of DS stuff on mine too but 3DS only and in no particular order:

3D Outrun - Stunning experience, you can tell they ported it with attention as it plays so well.
3D Sonic/II - Once again the ultimate renditions of classic titles.
Mario 3D Land - I actually liked this better than 3D World as the level design was so tight and the depth functionality was used perfectly.
LOZ: Majoras Mask - Never played it on the 64 due to the wack ass framerate so its nice to finally enjoy it so smooth.
LOZ: Ocarina Of Time - As above.
Ridge Racer 3D - I do enjoy my arcade racers and this one is great for quick spins.
Mario Kart 7 - Uber moreish, could do with being a bit faster though.
Rhythm Paradise Megamix - So much fun that it might make you throw your 3DS across the room.
Ace Attorney Trilogy - Not too many sprinkles but nicely spruced up anyway.
Mario Golf - So good, its like having the GC version in your pocket.
VVVVVV - Quite simply one of the greatest games I've ever played.
LOZ: Link Between Worlds - Awesome experience all around, subtle depth mechanic but very well done.

And an absolute truck load of SNES/GBA/GB/MD/PCE/DS titles.

It was the huge range of platforms and variety of games you could play perfectly on one device and how they all looked great on the screen that really did it for me as the shape/weight/balance of the n3DS is just perfect in my hands as it provides the ultimate portable library of nearly everythign you could ever want to play.

I've actually got Pilotwings but haven't played it yet along with Starfox 64 and Luigis Mansion 2 so thanks for reminding me of that one. Have you ever shared a list of your best of the best for DS as I'd be interested in peeping it also what are everyones top 3 titles for the 3DS.

The only down point of this platform is that we didn't get an F Zero X port as that would've just been absolutely amazing with the DD tracks and stuff added in and some 3D capering as it was designed for the system as the analog nub would've felt so dope to control the ships with.

Also which titles used the 3D effect best in your opinion?

Regular all day. Some folks like the larger form factor but it makes the graphics look noticeably worse and the smaller form factor fits perfectly in my hands. Best to try both of them out and see what works as I never liked the original hardware as it felt too small/cheap looking.

Its uber weird that Nintendo now only sell a gimmickless version of this platform though via the 2DS.

3DS shows that you a system doesn't have to be powerful to be a great gaming system. Vita was vastly more powerful than 3DS but Vita has died while 3DS still going. Games is all great gaming ever needs.

Whilst I really do dig the Vita and think its one of the best handhelds ever (that dpad - ZOMG!) there is something about the clamshell form factor, size and range of titles that makes the 3DS just edge it out for me as you could just keep it to the side and then pick up and play for a while to chill, close it up and come back later. I keep the the screen light on its lowest setting and have all the crap turned off and great standby/usage times.

My personal favorite 3DS game: Fantasy Life.

I agree DSLite was weak. DSi was the pinnacle of utility design even though it lost the GBA slot.

Yep! Secretly one of the best portable sports games on any system. I love this version.

Have you ever shared a list of your best of the best for DS as I'd be interested in peeping it
I haven't made such a list in a long time. And that list would be long since I only keep the games I like and my DS collection is over 100 titles.

also what are everyones top 3 titles for the 3DS.
Difficult to choose so will default to "which games did I spend an inordinate amount of time in?" since time = love in most cases.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Final Fantasy Theatrhythm (spent the most time on vanilla but of course Curtain Call is the better version)

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Another great game (well, series) that I often boot up my 3DS to play still:

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call

Theatrhythm Dragon Quest (sadly never released in the West)

The 3DS is the perfect form factor for these games, I use the stylus mode pretty exclusively although I'm usually more accurate with the button mode it's just less fun. The music is obviously the star of the show and Curtain Call especially has a huge amount of content included as well as tons of DLC tracks even from non-Final Fantasy games.

Never even played a 3DS lol. I keep a white DSLite though, with a mod cart, only so I can play the modded version of Tetris The Grandmaster 3: Terror Instinct :messenger_sunglasses: It's literally the only game I play on it. I'm going to do my best to maintain that system for the rest of my life lol.

Thanks @ DunDunDunpachi DunDunDunpachi glad to see someone enjoys Mario Golf as much as I do because I was stunned at how good the 3DS port was after pouring months into the GC version.

I've never even considered those three titles before so know naught of them but will peep. Radiant Historia is another title on my list to check.

@ jshackles jshackles that series looks dope. I've never played any rhythm actions games bar RP Megamix but those look like a lot of fun. Any other recommendations?

I did play through Ever Oasis, but I'd say the game was probably C-tier at best unfortunately. The game had an incredible amount of busywork (stuff like collecting money from the town's shops in taxes, growing crops, etc) that sounds awesome on paper but the execution was never very straightforward. The town grows to the point that it is big enough you have to start fast-traveling between sections, and the characters move from one screen to the next which gets pretty frustrating. The combat is pretty good, but a lot of the puzzles in the game fall hard on the "you have to go to town to switch out your party members to get the right one with the right ability to solve this puzzle" mechanic that more or less mandated that you use an online walk through for every dungeon to know who you have to take with you just so you don't end up making 4-5 trips back out of the dungeon until you find the right combination.

Unfortunately, Zelda this game was not. It did have a few Actraiser vibes, but like I said the town management stuff should have been a lot more streamlined.

My N3DS is awesome. I have to say, it's really uncomfortable to play with though. I got one of those grip things for it which makes it a bit more manageable, but the thing is just way too small and too square to be comfortable to play with ever...

It's library is decent, nothing to rave about, but I love how it can be hacked to be an awesome portable retro console. The resolution really fucking sucks too, I would have gladly preferred an upgrade to 480 over the goofy 3D effect I never use...

Yes, check that one out. FF6-tier RPG of the DS, in my opinion. I didn't play the 3DS remake but it should be better in every way.

I also liked the two SMT Devil Survivor "complete editions" on the 3DS. Enjoyable grid-based tactical RPGs with that typical SMT craziness.

I'm also fond of all the Mario & Luigi games. They each have their faults but they're worth checking out.

Project X Zone/Project X Zone 2
Shin Megami Tensei IV

I couldn't do a Top 3. There is a ton of stuff in my backlog so this might look different a year or two from now.

Now that is a shame as it looked so dope from the trailer but everything you've described is the reason why I'd avoid such a "game" because is sounds like a chore. Been fiending for a true Actraiser reboot since the SNES days...

I find it to be really comfortable, the grip is a decent addition but not essential but it all depends on our paws and preferences. Agree on the emulation aspect though as I was going to get an Android handheld like a GPD before I checked out the n3DS scene and I'm glad I did as I dislike retroarch and the whole one click, one title that works well vibe is just what I wanted plus the buttons/dpad are great which they usually aren't on those Chinese creations.

Never played any SMT games before so will check. M&L was dope on GBA but I've heard people say the same about the sequels as they may not be all that in comparison but are still decent. I generally only play the very best games as I prefer to invest what chilling time I do have in quality and anything less than an 8.5/10 doesn't really do it for me.

That being the case, you could always get the Superstar Saga remake for 3DS and call it good. Personally, I think Partners in Time is the best (but also the most convoluted/complicated). Each game has its merits and the addictive "time your button-press with the combat" mechanics are common to all games in the series. Watch a few trailers or throw darts at a dartboard and pick one accordingly.

Part in bold actually piqued my interest more! Didn't know they'd remade SS either, thanks. Agree that the combat was dope in these games but the main appeal to me was the story and how it all felt overall as it created a similar buzz to the first Paper Mario which just oozed charm and was a joy to play.

Oh, then yeah these games are for you. Like I said, they each have some flaws but if you want a guaranteed cozy, fun romp the M&L RPG series is hard to match.

I've been trying to think but it's just too hard for me to come up with my top three games for the 3DS, there are too many good ones to choose from.

My favorite genre is RPG games, and the system had some absolutely outstanding RPGs - including remakes like the N64 Zeldas, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and Dragon Quest 7/8. We also got stuff like Bravely Default, Rune Factory, Fantasy Life, several Fire Emblem games, several mainline Pokemon games, Kingdom Hearts, Mario and Luigi, and so on. In Japan we got stuff like Dragon Quest XI, Slime Mori Mori 3, Seisou no Amazones, Metal Max 4, and Time Travelers. The fact that the system has backwards compatibility with DS games and has Virtual Console for NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance means there is an absolutely staggering amount of great games the system is capable of playing.

I believe my three "most played games" though are Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call, and Fantasy Life. Not surprising considering I find these games to be nearly infinitely re-playable.

Special mention goes to A Link Between Worlds for being a sequel to one of my favorite games of all time, and actually not being a disappointment.

I do enjoy a good RPG - as long as there are no random battles involved - so will have to check out the recommendations, thanks.

Radiant Historia has got my attention as I mentioned earlier as it seems like it could be a great game plus the story seems really interesting.

Are there any games like Danganronpa on the 3DS? Also, long shot but anything at all like the flat out balls to wall amazing Ghost Trick? Wow, what a game that was. Total surprise upon playing it but it just stormed out of the gate and kept up the pace till the credits, an easy 10/10 title.

3DS rekindled my love for gaming after a 3 year hiatus. Picked an OG machine up on a whim with Pilotwings and Animal Crossing and I never looked back, picked up a WiiU soon after and now fully in love with my Switch. Currently rocking a New 3DS with Majora's Mask faceplates.
It has served me well. Countless games over 100 hours, replaying the 64 Zeldas in glorious 3D, first Pokemon game in 15 years, first Fire Emblem experience, the better Smash game. VC and indies, Streetpass was a fantastically implemented idea. I could go on forever.
Not played much recently because Switch, but I'm thinking about picking up Luigi's Mansion and Samus Returns for the old swansong. Best handheld ever.

I have a soft spot for Phoenix Wright. Professor Layton is one to look at. The 999 series is likely the closest to Danganronpa. I loved Hotel Dusk, in spite of its clunkiness and slow pace.

Ghost Trick is hard to surpass.

If you're looking for the zany factor, check out Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright. It's a crossover game and it was... kinda nuts.

Thanks, I tried to get into 999 as that was recommend to me but found it a bit meh after an hour or so as it just didn't grab me at all. PW collection I quite enjoyed and PL was another one I couldn't get into. Hotel Dusk sounds familiar - DS game, right? Think I played it after Ghost Trick. None of them had that hook that Danganronpa had though but I was tempted to get the Virtues Last Reward collection for Vita just to see how it was.

Trauma Center is another game that I was surprised not to see on the 3DS.

I don't think I'm you. :pie_thinking:

Admittedly I haven't gotten around to playing 999 yet but I know enough about it to confidently recommend it to Danganronpa fans.

Another 3DS that slipped right through the cracks for most people: Culdcept Revolt. These games always start out plodding and dull because they insist on gradually introducing you to everything slowly. Push through! It's a fun RPG/boardgame hybrid that gets really interesting as you acquire more cards and customize your decks. Probably the best cardgame-videogame since Pokemon TCG on Gameboy Color (though their gameplay is not similar).

I don't care what anyone says. This game rocks. Just go in with the expectation that you'll breeze through 95% of the puzzles and then get walled by some stupid non sequitur solution to a puzzle.

But man oh man. What a romp. If you like Pokemon, this is a pretty detailed and charming step into that world. It's dripping with details. It's clearly made for kids, but sometimes it's nice to play a game that doesn't take itself too seriously. Treat it like an interactive novel where you can ask the NPCs all sorts of questions and 'investigate' all sorts of items in the environments and then you'll love it.

It has a 70 Critic Metascore and a 75 User Metascore. Not that reviews mean anything, but I think the critics were dead wrong on this one.

This is up there with the best adventure games on the DS and 3DS.

For these type of games you much better off judging the game yourself rather than listen to reviews, thats what I did with Catherine and even tho it has 79 Metascore it was my GOTY in 2011.

You're making me wish I had a New 3DS instead of my old trusty 3DS XL. But I don't know about the investment, and having to move everything (including the motherload, ie. the Ambassador games) over.

But in any case, I still enjoy the 3D effect, and find it to be the perfect technology for a handheld. At its best, it makes the game world appear to be bigger, floating just behind the screen's surface, like a window into a box or diorama. The handheld disadvantage of having a small screen is wonderfully overcome by this effect.

Came into this thread expecting the Gameboy Advance SP...

:messenger_frowning_

Damn I loved Golden Sun: The Lost Age.

OG GBA > SP

The latter only gives you handcramps and the false hope of a light, when it's really just a side light that badly washes out the color. I do have a "Brighter SP" model from the final revision, that looks much better due to a real backlight, but it blurs out the motion and still doesn't give that lovely OG experience of deep color on a reflective screen.

If you liked the 3D effect the N3DS models are significantly better. My wife has the 3DS XL and I have the N3DS XL. There's an inward-facing IR camera that tracks your head and adjusts the 3D on the fly. Unlike the original model (where the 3D effect can break fairly easily) this allows you to even tilt the system (gently) without interrupting the effect.

In practical terms, this is the way it should've been at launch. It "just works" without being fiddly or uncomfortable.

Kid icarus is one of my faves ironically i had no interest in it at launch for some weird reason it wasn't till a year or so later i saw it & everything clicked. Ended up getting sucked into that game pretty hard even completed the almost impossible task of getting every Japanese AR card available for it and that includes all the promos. Not an easy task but a lot of fun to track them all down.
