Dragon Quest XI:Echoes of an Elusive Age |OT| This One Goes To XI

Yeah, so do you take it to be a reference to the next game being in development? Or just kind of an easter egg throw-away deal?

I think it's just a little wink and nod to the series and JRPG's overall, especially considering that they had a bunch of gameplay footage of the previous games in the series over the end credits. Also, don't forget this heartwarming Japanese ad for DQ11.

SE seems to be leaning heavily into nostalgia for the series with this one

Wait so after I got wiped by Mordegon and turned into a fish I'm clocking in at around 30 hrs.. you're saying this is only the halfway point?!

Technically the halfway point but yes there are 3 acts and that is act 1. I put the game aside for other games after I completed act 2 since that was treated like the end of the game. I imagine it is more of a break point for most people. I started act 3 and only like 3 hours into it and well... the game is truly meant to be played for all 3 acts

I am still kinda mad about act 3. Act 3 spoilers below.
Like seriously they are going to go into the past to save veronica(yeah yeah and more people by merit). So in that timeline they not only lost veronica but they also lost everyone else. Also the luminary retains everything but the rest of the team drops back down to level 32 for me :( . Oh my hard work. Squareenix you are so cruel... all those metal slimes I punished are now for naught :messenger_pouting:

Just follow the storyline in Act 3 after besting Jasper/Mordegon and your party member's levels will be restored in short order.

Is this a game you can play as a standalone? I've never played one of these, I'm not a big JRPG fan, and I can take or leave turn based combat. Still, this game's aesthetic is very appealing to me.

don't know what you mean by stand alone. Though most of the dragon quest games stories don't follow through, unless you play 1,2,3, after that they kind of started to make a new story for every game like final fantasy.

Basically, I want to know if I need to have played previous games in the series to understand what is going on. I think you've already answered that question.

1,2,3 follow a story, 3 is a prequel to 1, and 2 comes after 1. Then all the others just kind of stopped doing this, so you don't need to play them. The spin off games like dragon quest heroes, dragon quest rocket slime, and dragon quest swords also don't follow any of the story.

Dragon quest 3,4,5,8,11, are still the best I think. Don't worry about DQ10 cause it most likely will never come to America, do to it being a MMOrpg, and they have no servers for it here.

Okay, thanks. One other question, how is the difficulty level? As I'm not really a JRPG player there's every chance that I will absolutely suck. I'd still like to enjoy the story, though, so I'd happily play through on easy.

There are difficulty settings, but you have to turn them on manually. So just don't turn any of them on.

Another very interesting interview:

This part stood out though:
"Various ideas were brought to the table, including potentially making it more action oriented, rather than turn-based.But when it came down to it,the concept of this particular game is to cherish the traditions from past Dragon Quest games while taking on new challenges.Considering this,we felt that turn-based would ultimately be a more approachable system for everyone, and decided to move forwardwith a turn-based battle system for this title. And so,as mentioned in the beginning,in terms of the overall concept,if it ever becomes appropriate to move forward with a more action oriented battle system, there may be a time where we change things up drastically. It isn't that we're not thinking about it at all"
Personally i hope that they keep the main series turn-based.DQ is one of the very few turn based games that are left and which i still enjoy.

Totally agree. There are plenty of games going the ARPG route. Let DQ stay turn based!

MLB playoffs and my October spook fest are almost over so I'll get to jump back in. I played a bit over the weekend because I had a spare moment, reclaimed the castle. I'm really excited to jump back into this. All the talk of the 3 acts makes me feel like I stopped around the perfect time at the end of the first act

I mean.... they have dragon quest heroes for that. They should totally keep the main series turn based. It is the main reason I bought the game. A triple-A turn based rpg is hard to come by nowadays

Took a little break after I got into act 3 but I play the game less hardcore than I did through the first 2 acts. Still going strong though. I think I am super close to the very end of act 3... about 75 hours in.

Btw i still haven't finished the game. :p I'm at around 150 hours in and i just
arrived at the Fortress of Fear.I just beat the guy at the gate.
My characters are around level 50-52. I'm taking it very slow and trying to do everything without using a guide (except for material locations).

I'm having a blast with the game! :)

Me too. My progression for this game is very slow but I'm still having ton of fun with the game. I personally don't mind that because I'm in no hurry to finish the game as fas as possible. This game might keep busy until KHIII comes out.

Yeah but you are also playing Valkyria Chronicles 4. :p Personally I felt that it would be better to focus on one game 100% at a time and just enjoy it as if it was the only game I had.So I had to pause VC4 (I think I left it one chapter after the demo so I'm basically still at the beginning) But once I properly finish DQXI I will do the same for VC4 and focus on it 100%. :)

Same here. I’ve been really busy the last few weeks so I haven’t been able to play much, but I am enjoying it so much I don’t want it to end. Not using any guides at all - just going through it naturally.

I googled a little but for this but couldn't find anything.

Are there missables in this game? I'm thinking since many areas change drastically throughout the game, there are probably a few. Items? Quest? Monsters? Mini medals?

I remember DQ8 had 2 missable mini medals but the game gave you a few to spare so it didn't prevent you from getting all the prizes you could get with medals.

Just finished the final act. What a freaking game.

End game spoilers below.
I found it hilarious that big bad calasmos is just a baby faced Cell. Also I gave up on the final harma trial cause I was like level 75 and I just didnt want to grind out the game anymore. Cool post credits scenes with all the dragon quest games

From what I heard erik can steal mini medals
Yep. Stole a lot myself.

On another note, finally finished and platinum'd the game. Took me around 210 hours. I felt kinda lost after I was back to the mainscreen. I wanted to continue playing a new story plus with my current levels and weapons but couldn't. I didn't want to stop playing :(

To most people RDR2 is must but to me DQXI was the biggest game of 2018 and if in to JRPG then its a must buy.

If I remember correctly yes but ultimately no. You might have to wait a very long time if you ignore stuff but nothing is truly missable.

There are more then enough mini medals and you can farm for them 2 ways if need be.

One final question before I buy this. As I said above I intended to get the PC version. However, I read that it's a fairly bare bones port? I have a 4K TV and a 4K monitor. Should I go for the PS4 Pro version or PC?

Jumped back in today because baseball and October spookage is over. I still have to finish up Evil Within 2 but I can easily split time between the two. Just managed a hour and a half playing session.

I got Rab back in my party and now the game says head to Arboria. I can't remember where that is because of my layoff, anyone want to point me in the right direction?

I'm well aware I can google this but I'd rather encourage discussion/activity on this board ;)

Zoom to Sniflheim and walk through a couple zones to the east/southeast.

i was drunk on Sunday and i bought this. really loving it! it has that classic RPG feel but the presentation is nice and modern. i don't know what it is, it's just really nice to hang out in this world.

Agreed. It's beautiful. Not really sure what I'm doing combat wise, though. Whenever I get my ass kicked I just level up and have another bash.

still loving this game. the auto fight is really wonderful -- not only does it play smartly, it is faster than manual combat, saving you time. it's like when you play an emulator RPG and use fast forward to level up, only here you can just let the game play faster but without the cheapening/cheating effect entirely.

just got offered a quest to kill a Spitfire with a pep ability that requires 3 people to be pep'd up. how do i do that?

i used one earlier that had the two girls summoning rainbows and magickal talismans in a trippy cutscene, it was so cool.

I finished this game like a week ago and I can't stop thinking about it. The final act was just TREMENDOUS. They really, really nailed this one in a way I didn't think they could. I thought there was no way any JRPG would pass Persona 5 as my favorite for the generation, but XI managed to. It's an inspiring game, one that is deeply respectful of its own franchise, with a refreshingly gentle build up towards a satisfying finale. If Persona 5 was a maximalist beautiful romp, this one is a minimalist quiet journey. It's the Tim Hecker of JRPGs.

This is my GOTY. Amazing title.

holy crap with this amazing battle system! it is turn based but you can switch on and off characters and let the auto combat roll along or switch it up and make it control one person in the middle of playing. you can just do whatever you want. it is so perfect. the auto-fight can be applied to any number of characters, it is completely at your control. and you can still manually do everything if you want to go old school. it is super flexible. very cool=)
