I'd have to go with Xbox 360 since my most played games last gen were 360 exclusives and it had the definitive edition of the vast majority of third party console games.
PS3 is not far behind though as PS+ used to consistently give out good games and free online was cool too.

Better controller, better third party quality (bayonetta says hi) and an online that didnt shit the bed on almost a monthly basis.

I gotta go with the 360. Too bad the One is hardly a fitting successor.

Current results (about 50/50) mirror the situation back then just about perfectly.

I was team Xbox that gen. Blue team this gen. Next-gen; who knows, could be both, but Sony would have to fuck-up pretty badly for me to switch ecosystems again. Which they very well could, given the track record of all three across the generations...

Xbox 360 for its superior online service during last gen but it’s honestly a close call because while the 360 had better multi platform titles and great exclusives, the PS3 had a lot of versatility and probably a longer life with the blu-ray drive.

Oblivion was the game I first played on the 360, remember it like it was yesterday. Bought it together with my 720P "HD" tv while my mom yelled at me for "wasting" that amount of money. What I got was one of the best experiences in my entire life. Thanks plastic.

360...

Best controller design to fit my hands
Awesome party system
Achievement system...just wow!
Quality games: Gears, Ninja Gaiden 2 etc
My CoD machine and multi platform games always had better framerate and look on x360
OG blades in the OS was awesome plus amazing boot time.
Yeah i gone through 4 360's due to rrods but still love it. It was more like a spiritual successor to DC than xbrick.

Too bad the vcr (aka xbo) completely sucked in my books apart from the controller. Good thing X gave me some hope back with all that added juice.

I had both at launch. The 360 had some amazing moments.
1. Picking up Oblivion and that massive strategy guide. I had the RROD 3 times and had to call 1-800-4MYXBOX multiple times. I had to send it back to them in the card board box. It sucked, but I finished the game. I remember having to hold down the A button to delete the cache because apparently it helped the game not freeze and load faster.
2. Final Fantasy XI beta. What an awesome time on a beta. I played it, bought an Atlas book to go with it, and I fell in love with XI's world. I remember getting the beta disc from the Xbox Magazine.
3. BioShock, Mass Effect, Gears of War, and all those "-"exclusives"-" before they got ported. Gears of War I was super excited about. I went to the EB Games 9 or 10 PM teaser event where Cliff from Epic showed us some footage. I got a poster and a ton of temporary tattoos. I was super excited and I preordered the Limited Edition. The game was amazing. This was about the time Burger King did their whole marketing thing. I felt like I had joined a VIP club.
3. I remember after finishing up Gears 2 or 3, my 360 died. I was using a 360 memory card at that moment. I went out and bought a slim and played through Halo Reach. Games like Ninja Gaiden 2 and Lost Planet were awesome on the 360. I guess the last 360 game I finished was Mass Effect 3.

So I had all those awesome moments with 360. I adored my PS3. I had gotten one with Resistance Fall of Man at first, then it was Virtua Fighter 5, and Oblivion GOTY Edition. I bought most AAA for that console except MS exclusives. I finished BioShock 2, Dead Space series, and many various titles-AAA. I really enjoyed Uncharted and KillZone. I imported a handful of games - Demon's Souls from Korea+Chinese version, White Knight Chronicles (which was ok), KENZAN!, and so forth. I really liked PSN and I had bought a lot of digital titles and so forth by the end of gen.

What basically did me in on that gen was playing through most of the titles and enjoying them at such an early stage in time. I first had some amazing moments with the 360, but the exclusives sorta lingered after Mass Effect 3 came out. I ended up getting games like BioShock Infinite, Call of Duty, Battlefield on PC. The Last of Us and Uncharted 3 I had day one on PS3.

I've always been a PS fan and a MS fan. I owned a lot of Xbox and PS games. In the end the PS3 because I felt like the Japanese influence of gaming lived on PlayStation just like it did on the PS1 and PS2. I also enjoyed how Sony brought over a bunch of amazing classic games digitally. That can still be enjoyed on the PS3, Vita, and PS TV.

Long rant, but I have so many awesome memories from last gen.

I preferred the 360. That's not really a knock against the PS3. I'm just a huge Halo fan and that is primarily what I played. Throw in some Viva Pinata and some Call of Duty 4 too.

Xbox 360 with SNES are now my favorite consoles for ever.
PS3 is not even in my top 5.
And I'm saying that even if I actually prefer my PS4 by far over my Xbox One.

Wow, that Wii poll...

No one liked the Wii, huh?

Personally I didn't really like either. All the standout titles were multiplat, so it's really hard to justify preferring one console over another. Either were pretty solid choices, I would say.

The 360 came out swinging when the generation started, but by year 3 or 4, it already felt like it had run out of steam. It started reminding me of the first Xbox where MS just abandoned it, except instead of abandoning it, they just started shoveling out trash for it.

The PS3 came out 12-18 months later, had a ridiculous $500-600 launch price, and yet somehow still managed to overtake the 360 in terms of meaningful software. There was no reason the PS3 shouldn't have been a complete and utter failure with what it was up against, but it thrived anyway.

360, best console launch exclusives mass effect, bioshock, gears of war vs africa from ps3
cheaper console, a year out before, better graphics on multiplats. it was a slam dunk.

360 probably has the best collection of games of any system in history. From Japanese games to western devs. It had the best online experience, the best console ports of nearly all multiplats, and by far the best controller. In addition to all that, 360's japanese import shmup selection puts the system way way over the top for me personally. There are many many legendary, timeless Cave games. I will never box up my 360 for this reason alone.

PS3 is easily one of the worst systems i own. The controller to this day is so bad. I dread using it when I play it. PSN was just night and day awful compared to the competition. The patching process of double downloading was nonsense, and the constant system updates were a hassle. PS3's only main standouts for me were MGS4 and Demon Souls, which wasnt nearly enough.

PS3 was my main and still kinda is due to an enormous backlog. I spent hundred of hours online playing stuff like Demon's Souls, Bad Company 2, MGS4Online, TLOU, etc. The mix of western action/fps games and Japanese action/rpg games was the main hook for me.

i voted 360.

The system was just the most dominant at the time and seemed to get the more 3rd party (timed) exclusives which pulled people in, even ones you don't expect like, eternal sonata, last remnant, infinite undiscovery and many more.

Looking back the 360 was a great console with a great library, don't get me wrong the ps3 was great too, but it just took a while before anything really "caught my eye" on that system and that was the last of us....

I preferred the Xbox 360 last gen it was my go to console but i picked up a PS3 for uncharted 2 and resistance 2 I didn't like the idea of game installs back then and waiting to play but free online was good even if it wasn't upto par with the 360's offering but towards the end of the gen I also felt that content on the 360 was sparse so that lead me to the PS4 this gen

360 hands down. Better online, better controller, better party chat. I bought a PS3 late in it's life and I was shocked by how bad the controller was. It was cramped and shit for playing fps games. The 360 was so good that to this day I still can't believe how badly MS fucked up this gen. They better bring the goods next gen or I'll be sticking with Playstation

360 had Kameo, which is the best exclusive game out of both platforms and it also has the better controller, so easy win for me.

PS3.

Because Demon's Souls was the most important game of the generation.

Also because the games people often associate with 360 like Oblivion, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Gears of War: I played them all on PC. So 360 has no special place in my heart.

It's almost as if this entire topic was biased against it and made the option into some snide negative choice of only owning the Wii when most at the time including myself would have owned multiple systems. Why even bother including it in a 360 vs PS3 thread to begin with besides starting shit? Though I'm sure you know about doing that kind of stuff without any consequences here.

Preferred the 360 during the actual time, tho now prefer the PS3 for the gems that haven't been bettered this generation.

Too close to differentiate. But I actually didn't like either, for me the PS3 is the worst playstation while the X360 might the best Xbox, otherwise they're equivalent.

360 was brilliant at first but went downhill when they changed the original UI. They seemed to lose focus on it being a games console and the PS3 emerged as being far superior in the end.

It's amazing how both consoles did a complete 360 (no pun intended). This generation has had none of that excitement.

I started off the generation with using the 360 more and ended with using the PS3 more. But I liked them both equally and they each had their strengths. I had a launch 360 that got RROD and a launch 60 GB PS3 that got YLOD, so in my opinion neither company's launch hardware was particularly reliable in the long run. Early on more and better games were on the 360 and I didn't have to deal with the terrible installs that PS3 had, so I spent more time on 360. But Sony started cranking out more exclusives and developers learned to use the mess that is the Cell better, so it made sense to focus on PS3. The PlayStation store sales let me build up a great digital library for cheap as well. But overall I call last generation a tie between the two. At least for me.

The first half, 360. But eventually most of the great 360 games such as BioShock and Mass Effect were release on PS3. Add that to all the great PS3 exclusives such as Uncharted 1-3, The Last of Us, Demon's Souls, etc, the total library by the end was significantly better on PS3.

First 2 to 3 years of X360 were awesome. Unfortunatelly, sucessive fails from japanese softwares and then, kinect came and fucked everything.

But, last gen was a long run and in the end, PS3 like any playstation had a better lineup than xbox. 2013 was really amazing.

Xbox 360. Owned both.

PS3 was my Blu-ray player that happened to play games. Bonus!

Era was all about Gears for me.
Loved Uncharted 1 & 2 and Residtance games.

Loved the 360 controller. Loathed the DualShock.

Placed next to each other, sometimes even using same cables.....Xbox Live was super reliable; PS would never stay connected.

I started with the 360 from around 2008 and didn't get a PS3 until 2012 when the PS4 was creeping up on it.

It's really a 50/50 split but at the time Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia and the Gears of War series had me staying loyal to Microsoft but once I got my PS3 I never went back. But even having spent longer on the 360 I think I enjoyed the PS3 more in the end.

The 360 had amazing shooters like gears and halo, had three Forza Motorsports releases and Forza Horizon, and really pushed indie games for consoles hard. I loved achievements from the start of that generation.

I'm on the PS4 now though.

Ps3 because of my taste in Games. Did not really care about all the online stuff backwards compability etc.

I was full 360 last generation. Still have it hooked up in the bedroom. This gen... I don't know what even happened. Well, here's to next gen and lessons learned.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Towards the end the PS3 because the 360 seemed to stop having JRPGs after 2010 (FFXIII and Nier)

You still completely ignored my post about why you even put it in there to begin with. It's a 360 vs. PS3 poll right? So why did you put it in there?

https://www.neogaf.com/threads/the-gamecube-was-nintendos-worse-home-console-failure.1468105/

No more excuses.

Right. People make fun of the Wii because it was a bad console, not because there's some elaborate conspiracy theory against Nintendo.
Maybe you should make a thread if really was a bad console or not. Then again you're most likely too much of a coward to do such a thing and can only hide in other peoples threads instead of doing it yourself.

360 had a better start.
Ps3 ended great, but after a lot of years with poor ports, almost zero exclusives and worse online framework.

From 2005 to 2010 XboX had Perfect Dark Zero, Quake IV, DoA 4, Divinity 2, Condemned : Criminal Origins, Dead Rising, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Gears of War 1 and 2, Halo 3, a lot of exclusive Live Games, Metro 2033, Spider-Man Friend or Foe, Velvet Assassin, Alan Wake, Virtua Fighter 5, Halo Reach, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, The Witcher 2, Forza Motorsport 3, etc

In addition, a lot of Sony exclusives were made multiplatform : Tekken, Final Fantasy 13 and spin offs, WWE games, etc.

Not all of them were masterpieces (Velvet Assassin, Perfect Dark Zero, Quake IV) other ones were ported for Ps3 later on (Alone in the Dark, Mass Effect and Dead Rising 1), but Xbox 360 had objectively better and more games at the beginning of the generation and even the bad games (Too Human) had a lot of hype around them and sold very well, generally.

In the same time span Ps3 just had God of War 3, an enhanced version of Alone in the Dark, Gran Turismo, Siren Blood Curse and of course MGS 4.

Too little too few.

Of course I may have forgotten a couple of titles, others I wasn't interested in, but in 2007 I had to buy a console, I just picked the one I felt more connected with.

From 2010 to 2013 of course Ps3 regained a lot of lost ground with the Infamous series, Uncharted Trilogy (although the first one wasn't that impressive) and the Last of Us, which unfortunately was just the Swan song of Ps3.

I want to clarify, in order to avoid any console war, that I always was and still be mainly a PS user, having a PS one, PS2, PS Vita and Ps4. So 360 was the only Non-Sony console I ever owned.

The reason why I picked ps4 over Xbox One this generation is the same as above : too little too few in terms of single player, immersive Sim exclusive games.

There have been over 203 votes so far. And people said NeoGaf wasn't active, ha showed you.

I will admit I'm surprised at how even things are. Even for the other 2 options there's some good balance. Lots of varying perspectives here.

PS3 easily. It started out horribly, but it became a beast. It had the exclusives, free online, etc.

360 was a very good machine as well and I loved mine. It definitely got the best of PS3 those first few years, but overall PS3 ended up being the winner imo.

I started with the 360 and got a PS3 much later. I played the piss out of my 360, only had one red-ring incident, and it was promptly repaired. Lotta good memories playing FEAR, Bioshock, Rainbow 6 Vegas, etc.

The PS3 was neat for some of it's exclusives and PS+ free games were hard to beat. I really hated the PS3 Dualshocks though. Convex control sticks were beyond stupid, and the sticks felt like they had way too much room to move.

Overall I just played the 360 way more, and all but one of my friends had 360s as well.

I voted 360 but it’s really a wash since I Red Ringed even though they fixed it I was out a system like a month and all I got was a month of Live. Plus I knew the one I got it back would suffer same fate more than likely, was like a ticking time bomb to break again so I eventually had to upgrade to a 360S but they should have let any who experienced the red ring to upgrade to a S eventually free as long as they sent in their original 360. PS3 had problems also but nothing like that. But had there been no red ring 360 beats it in almost every way .

I preferred the Xbox. I bought one for Dead or alive 4. Then i discovered amazing games like Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero. Then Gears of War came out and Halo games. I wasnt a big fan of anything on the PS3. God of war bored me while Ninja Gaiden gave me the challenge i needed.

I still have games on both systems i want to finish though.

Wow. Close tally. Dead 50-50 split between the systems.

Yeah, the gen went on so long and things were different based on continent, so people likely had completely different experiences between the two systems. And considering they both sold around the same I'm not surprised at the 50-50 split.
