The Switch is unexpectingly recieving a ton of (indie) FPS and RPG games.

This is just a piece to highlight some titles that inevitably would have been lost. I think most folks here know that i love shooters and other first person titles. Whilst a lot of stuff targets PC only, some make the cut to PS4 and XBO.

Since its release, the Switch however has seen an ever increasing amount of shooters and FP RPG's that, due to the hybrid nature of the device, offer up a interesting way for devs to target both a home console and a portable machine at once. Being like this, it recieves games that similar machines like Android Gamepads or TV Boxes wouldn't have, positioning the Switch inbetween a dedicated games machine and a mobile ecosystem. Two titles on the forthcoming list are even console exclusive to Switch (for now).

So here it is, in random order, a list of bigger and smaller FPS/RPG titles that are in development or released for Switch that one may have missed or one would want to discuss about.
  • Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath - A classical shooter/adventure turns to the Switch from Oddworld Inhabitants, which you may remember from Abe!
  • Megaton Rainfall - Be a superhero on a planetary scale in this rather epic title. Superman 64 done (Relatively) well.
  • DOOM 2016 - RIP AND TEAR. Also BLUR, but its demonkicking. Everyone loves demonkicking.
  • Payday 2 - Rob a bank, do a heist. This game may rob you not be for everyone, especially when its Overkill we are talking about, but portable ban robberies on-the-go is enticing, to say the least.
  • Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus - DEM NAZIS ARE AT IT AGAIN. Having the same underpinnings as DOOM 2016, expect a Gaussian Blurfest. For those who can tolerate, this is a surprisingly capable port.
  • Polygod - A hectic colorful shooter's that is everything that DOOM does not pretend to be. Enjoy the vibes set here.
  • DOOM: Eternal - RIP AND TEAR, PART 2. You don't need more info than that.
  • The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim: Special Edition - Fus your Ro, 'how bou Dah?'
  • PixARK - A charming title taking inspiration from ARK, its Minecraft + shooting in a Dinosaur world. Cute and cheerful, and thus a perfect fit for Nintendo.
  • ARK: Survival Evolved - The big daddy to PixARK, this isn't the mobile version up ported, but a proper port by Abstraction Games. If it performs as well as its PC and console counter parts, then prepare to be amazed.
  • The Elder Scrolls: Blades - A stunning looking mobile title rivalling Skyrim in visuals, but Todd Howard has said it would come to all consoles, so including Switch. Not much more is known, but dem visuals...
  • Ion Maiden - A CLASSIC retro shooter, made by Interceptor Entertainment and published by 3D Realms. If Duke Nukem was 90's badass, then Shelly ''Bombshell'' Harrison is the 21st Century Digital Girl replacement of ''The Duke''. Runs on the classical Build Engine too.
  • Away: Journey To The Unexpected - Few games are ever so charming as Away. Taking a very particular Anime style with sprites and a gameplay of adventurous meaning, Away sounds as bright and happy as the gameplay appears it is.
  • Paladins: Champions Of The Realm - #thegamethatdidnotripoffOverWatchbutitlookssoosimilar. A hero shooter one can play for free, even. Interesting of note: The game hits 60 FPS like its console brethrens. And its free, so...
  • Hollow - A horror game reminiscent of Dead Space. If its actually any good, remains to be seen.
  • Shadow Of Loot Box - A parody title mocking the usage of Loot Boxes. ''But how can you build a complete game around that idea?'' you may ask? Well, Shadow Of Loot Box shows it can be done, atleast in regards to the theme.
  • Prodeus - RIP AND TEAR errr.. this game is what you get if you are DOOM's little sister that is stuck in a retro phase. Looks amazingly awesome, made by devs who worked at Bluepoint and on Uncharted. A sleeper hit, perhaps.
  • Aftercharge - Looks like a hero shooter but it ain't one. Aftercharge is more a strategtic game where the attackers are invisible, and the defenders have to disable them, leaving the attackers visible but unable to use their abilities and can be revived. Surfice to say, this sounds very interesting.
  • Immortal Redneck - Its Serious Sam. Except not. But it plays in Egypt. And its fast.
  • Amid Evil - Hexen with a retro vibe. Amid Evil is made by Indefatigable and absolutely nails the gameplay aspect according to majority consensus. The game was announced by New Blood Interactive as coming to Switch as a console exclusive. One of the more colorful titles on the list.
  • Dusk - From New Blood itself comes Dusk, a shooter that is Quake without the gritty. Not as good as the example it follows, but a very decent entry in its own right.
  • Underworld Ascendant - The spiritual successor to the legendary Ultima: Underworld series, with most of the old team on it aswell. Ascendant breathes the classical Underworld vibe, but if the game holds true to its roots or implements some modern RPG features remains to be seen.
  • Rico - Remember the shootouts from F.E.A.R in a room? Rico takes that concept to a full game in this buddy-cop mayhem with a celshaded artstyle. Definitely something else from the list.
  • Radiation Island - Hailing from mobile, Radiation Island combines aspects of Far Cry (A huge jungle) with Stalker. Don't let the mobile basis fool you - This is a deep title.
  • One More Dungeon - A cutey retro RPG that also saw a release on Vita. Go back to the land of 8 and 16 bit in this little RPG.
  • Morphite - Its No Man's Sky meeting up with Metroid. Morphite definitely is more limited in scope, but has a completely original low poly artstyle. Its not the best, but for those looking for a new kind of look, Morphite will suit you.
  • Shadowgun Legends - The Destiny clone arrives on Switch. It looked great on mobile, how will it be on Switch? Madfinger brings his game to Switch.
  • Shadowgun War Games - Build on the underpinings of Legends, War Games is more a hero shooter, and one that may have to battle against that other game, Paladins.
  • Modern Combat 5: Blackout - This was (supposely) announced for Switch, but i never saw a confirmation by Gameloft itself i believe. Either way, Modern Combat 5 apes Call of Duty as much as it can on mobile, but apparently now also on Switch. In a ironic (and perhaps deliberate) twist of fate, Blackout also recently accquired a Battle Royale mode, similar to.. Call of Duty: Blackout. Visually perhaps the worst on the list, but the enormous amount of modes + battle royale may prove to be interesting.
  • Perception - An adventure by developers who worked on Bioshock. Maybe your cup of tea, maybe not.

Enjoy!

Oddworld Strangers Wrath is really good but sadly overlooked. A hidden gem that I hope gets more recognition on the Switch.

Nice OT!

Just a question, should Wolfenstein 2: New Colossus and DOOM 2016 be on this list? i dont think the term indie apply to these games.

Its worth mentioning that Underworld Ascendant unfortunately received very low scores on metacritic, and it currently has a score of 4.0.

so games that have been out for 1+ years? yeah thats something
Oh good. First a user who comments on the spelling, and now you finding it curious that some older titles are also mentioned here.

But wait:

"So here it is, in random order, a list of bigger and smaller FPS/RPG titles that are in development or released for Switch that one may have missed or one would want to discuss about."

Almost like i wanted to avoid such a comment like yours since i knew it would occur if i did not mention that.

Perhaps, like I Iggzy its more worthwhile to comment on the content rather than spelling errors that highlight that im not a bot or not reading the OP completely?

Which is why indie is in (brackets). ;)

you sound like one of these people that posts useless sizzle posts to get upvotes. kind of no reason to have these kinds of redundant posts but to each their own i guess.

OP when you say "a ton" you mean "if we compare it with the WiiU" right? 3 FPS, Skyrim (it's only like 7 years old) and some other F2P stuff are hardly "a ton" considering how many of those have been released only this generation. It, indeed, is getting a fuckton of indies and rehashes tho.

I’m going to be down to return to the party if it’s less than 10 bucks.
You can get it and Munch’s odyssey for 4 bucks on iPad.

Literally the first thread i made this way and specifically to highlight the more unknown titles. As i was making it, i figured i could list the others aswell.

Perhaps that part is redundant and i should have reworded it to highlight the lesser known titles, but if you cared to read the threads ive made so far, then you would understand that what you assume here is not true.

No hard feelings ofcourse. Thanks for the feedback. :)

Not really, although i agree that the console need new games and less remaster/ports, its still has a great library of games.

You are forgetting Xenoblade 2 or maybe even Zelda BotW that are great open world games

If you want open world rpg games like Witcher 3, just buy PC or Xbox One/PS4

Thanks for the list. Not sure what everyone's problem is?

I hope these games are putting in gyro aiming by default. It makes FPS games playable in handheld mode; otherwise aiming on the Joycons can be very fiddly :)

Switch is fulfilling the "handheld FPS machine" that the Vita could only dream of becoming.

its a shame because Killzone: Merc was amazing on vita.

i'm not one for FPS, but based off the threads title I was kinda expecting a big list of RPGs too... hint hint OP ;)

Skyrim’s on Switch!?

Cheers OP 🍺
Yep, the Special Edition even! Visually its halfway between the PS360 and PS4/XBO versions. Runs 900p docked, and it has Zelda exclusive clothes! ;)

Old school style rpgs? If yes, then sign me up!
You mean dungeon crawlers, like tile based? Because those are i think on Switch aswell. I kinda went for the free movement in both FPS and RPG.

You could say that, but i was more referring to that as way of a handheld machine. Its getting a lot of stuff you won't see on other portables with the added bonus of also doing it on a home console. This was addressed however in the OP though, but perhaps it was not clear enough judging by your comment?

Doom on Switch is incredible but I didn’t know that Doom Eternal was definitely coming to Switch too?
Absolutely! It was announced for PC/PS4/XBO and Switch, on Id Tech 7. I am not even sure how they are going to do that without even more undercuts than Doom 2016, but who knows.

If you had a list of best sellings games then yes Odyssey comes up quite high. Then again its also just a good game, so i am not sure what the dislike on that is? We need numbers.

+ switch is too weak for current gen open world rpg games.
I feel that statement lacks details, as there are more than one reason why Switch aint getting those titles, although it has a few (Skyrim SE for example, and there is Xenoblade, too). One of those is that a lot of RPG engines aren't supporting an ARM SKU whatsoever. Meaning, the engine has to be reworked to support an architecture different than x86. This was less of a burden on the previous gen as all consoles were PowerPC based (Thus devs only had to target x86 and PPC from the start).

The Switch entered the console cycle after PS4/XBO were already well established. The Wii U missed its target, coming in a year before PS4/XBO arrived and supporting a ISA (PPC again) that by then was on its way out. ARM atleast has the benefit that it is a common architecture, after all, its in phones, tv boxes, tablets. This is one of the reasons why developers do decide to develop Switch titles, there is a commodity available.

Some devs do the work and port engines over. Hi-Rez for instance ported UE3 over and Panic Button did iD Tech 6. However, in terms off scale and custom components, RPG engines are a vastly different beast. Its why its interesting that Skyrim got ported over, but given there were already many ISA's of that, perhaps it was easier?

In any case, which tech gets ported over or not and whether that is easy or not remains a case-by-case basis. So if the Switch has no current-gen RPG engines, it might be because the amount of effort required outweighs the amount of time that is available. Although i would expect the PS360 Ass Creed titles at some point though.

Not sure what there is to enjoy in butchered underpowered versions of games for a tiny screen with bad controls.
To be made aware of those titles most people would inevitably miss and discuss about those, perhaps?

And i am aware of your stance regarding this and indie titles. To that point, many others also enjoy playing games this way, the portability, and so on. I understand its enticing being completely negative at this and other things, but every thing has two sides, and a middle. :)

Thanks for the list. Not sure what everyone's problem is?

I think the New Blood ones (Amid Evil/Dusk) did.

I don't get it either, by the way. Perhaps my style of phrasing attracts specific criticism? I don't know.

its a shame because Killzone: Merc was amazing on vita.

i'm not one for FPS, but based off the threads title I was kinda expecting a big list of RPGs too... hint hint OP ;)
I know! I actually was pondering if i would name it in the thread title or not. But if i obmitted the rpg part and still listed those anyway (Since they are first person after all) i could expect comments like ''But OP you also listed RPG's when you say its about FPS.'' Ofcourse, i could also just obmitted those names completely, but then the comment would be ''But OP there are also RPG's in first person, you know?''

In any case i apologize that i brought unwarranted hype to this thread in your case..

Indie devs love the system and I can see why, people are were lapping up indie stuff early on in the switch's life (mainly due to the lack of games bar BOTW) and people seemed to have stuck with it, giving these devs a great opportunity to grow and get better with what they do.

I don't usually play indie games much, I can guarantee if I had gotten games like dead cells or owlboy on xbox or playstation, I would have played them a little then they would just be a digital dot in my collection.... meanwhile on switch, I have them both physically and can't get enough of them!

With the RPG's I'm not entirely sure what is pushing them towards the switch, maybe its the thought process of "well its portable....maybe people will spend more time on it now" but I'm not too sure!

It’s great. I’m a Zelda and Metroid Prime fan but it falls off from there for me on Nintendo exclusives, so the fact that you can play something like Doom on it is pretty compelling to someone like me. It would open up a bigger market for Nintendo consoles if they can keep the support. I’d love to see previous gen gems like Lost Planet or Dead Space to find there way over, I’d drop 60 in a heartbeat.

Exactly. I have yet to understand why not more devs port their PS360 titles over to Switch. Sure, its a port, but its also portable what you are getting. Dozens of people commuting or playing at work would spill the money to have their last-gen titles on-the-go and with a bonus of higher res/perf at home.

I was just thinking we should have a celebratory Switch thread before he-who-shall-not-be-named returns from hiatus. This’ll do.

(I see there’s no shortage of Nintendo cranks anyway)

I’m hoping Nintendo sees this, indications are that they do. Why compete directly with ps and Xbox, create a market of your own, then populate it with games for everyone.

Lets not bring attention to negative critters. What is there, should be a positive thing!

I mean, it seems like such a slam dunk decision to release PS360 titles on the thing, making last-gen portable. I dunno why that idea has not yet catched fire yet.

Really excited for Tokyo RPG Factorys new game Oninaki. I am Setsuna was a big disappointment and I haven´t tried Lost Sphere as that looked to be shaped in the same mould, but this one looks to be a keeper. The announcement trailer showed off some pretty imagery and the story seems original with a lot of promise. As a JRPG-fan the Switch continues to deliver the goods.
