Darksiders 3 Review Thread

Purchased Darksiders 3... played it for a hour or so... found out it uses the Souls system (I absolutely hate the Souls games and the Souls system) ... Uninstalled and refunded the game.
Thank you developers for ruining a game series I liked. End of Story.

Wait, do you mean when you die, you "drop" the experience that you had on your character, and if you die again before getting back to where you died, that experience is gone forever? That souls system? Because yeah, I wouldn't like to see that in a Darksiders game either.

Either way, though, GameSpot gave this the same score as Fallout 76? I find it hard to believe this game is that level of bad.

This just reaffirms what I’ve read and heard elsewhere. Hard pass.

Don't trust reviewers to review Darksiders fairly. The first two in the series are some of my favorite games and the combat in 2 is sublime. I'll be playing this one soon enough. Really fun and surprisingly lore heavy series. Looking forward to 3 and 4.

Once there are patches to improve the framerate issues on the PS4, I'll purchase the game. I'm a huge fan of the Darksiders series, and I honestly would like to support the devs. Not too concerned about the changes in the core gameplay loop, I guess they wanted to try something new. Darksiders 1 was also slightly different when compared to Darksiders 2.

Watched someone play on the Pro and the graphics looked terrible. Got home and tried it on PC maxed out and the graphics difference was night and day. I mean its not a great looking game even on PC but its miles ahead of the Pro, which doesn't even have shadows lol.

Bought the game, played a few hours, defeated two of the Sins. Overall, not a fan of them taking influence from the Souls games and their crappy checkpoint system. Should have stuck to the formula of the first game.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Game doesn't look great and performs real bad for me, I guess I need a new CPU since I have a 1080 GPU but I wouldn't expect it given how it looks (my CPU is an old i7 3770K not overclocked, I don't have good cooling). No option to at least lock it to a consistent 30 fps with all the bells and whistles but I can't get it to 60fps regardless of settings (though turning them down does help a great deal given low settings have shit lighting and no shadows to speak of, still it's not without dips even then). Combat and traversal seem nice enough though, I'll see how it is when I lock it to 30 via afterburner. I actually went back to DS2 and that too has heavy dips in some areas (or when it loads new stuff in as you wander) but it's still far more consistent than this. But the visual density is definitely higher in 3. Still I'd expect it to run better personally, I mean, this system has no problem with games that justify CPU use easier, like the likes of GTAV or The Witcher 3.

Dude the game is very cpu lite, in the 30-50% range per core on my I5-6600K. It is quite gpu heavy at times though, although i have a locked 60fps at 1080p maxed out on my 980ti.
Your cpu should be more then good enough.

Well that makes no sense for me then. Maybe past the first area it gets easier? I went up to Envy only. Or maybe I should put it on an SSD? I'll try it again tomorrow after work and see what afterburner reports for usage.

Yeah something wrong somewhere as the game is much lighter on the cpu than a lot of recent games, much lighter. You should easily behitting 1080p/60, if not 1440p/60. Also i have it installed on a standard hard drive as both my SSD's are full, so thats not the problem.
EDIT. Most of the ingame cutscenes run at 30fps for me (i guess they are locked to 30), but actual gameplay is 60fps with room to spare.

I'll try with the new drivers that are optimized for the game tomorrow as well, I forgot I've yet to install those. Hopefully I can get performance like yours after I try everything. Again, I didn't go far but even at the very first landing crater area there were dips and chugs while looking around (I thought it might be that distortion effect at first but it was the same after moving out of there) and then pretty much constantly while progressing onwards as well. Meh.

Yeah do what you said and run Afterburner, that should tell you where the problem is. I can't see it being your cpu though.

Huge Darksiders fan here and I totally agree with you. I hate that artificial difficulty system. I still want to see this story through so been grinding to get stronger to overcome this ridiculous system as much as I can. I never understood what is the enjoyment in dying often and moreso, desperately and frustratingly trying to get back to your souls before you die again.

The game isn’t too bad but they sure ruined the series.

I played the game last night for four hours and im actually enjoying it a lot. Wish the checkpoints were closer to the bosses and outside of some slowdown at times, I don't really have any major complaints thus far.

Something's wrong with the game, tried the new NV drivers and I was glad to see it was now 60fps with the semi-freuqent hitching here and there as stuff load-in or are triggered around you.

Then I died at Envy and the game took a while to load so I didn't expect it figuring it does a full reset but after that performance was awful again regular drops to 30-40 fps and constant stuttering.

I haven't gone back after exiting the game again to see if that fixes it again. CPU/GPU usage seemed fine (actually I forgot to turn those stats on, but their clocks were maxed out so I figure they were used.

Edit: actually, my cpu clock doesn't seem right, bouncing all over like that, I'll have to test properly I guess...

If nobody else gets similar I might be overheating which causes it to constantly downclock, yikes...

Because no other review I read mentioned it's "garbage" performance on PS4. If it's so bad why didn't anyone else come out and state that?
Simple - a LOT of people are genuinely unable to notice these things. I'm always surprised yet I keep encountering it. Huge frame-rate drops, stutters and the like just don't register for a lot of folks. It's baffling.

Nobody picked up on the broken HDR either but hey!

Well either that or they did notice but it didn't bother them.

I've been trying to figure out how true that is, but every stream I find is for the PC version. Although I'm pretty sure the review is a lie or exaggerated now since those non framerate issues should be on PC as well, yet I've not seen them.

I like the Souls games (up to a point) but have never finished one. This looks like it would frustrate me but I might give the PC version a chance once the price comes down a bit. Lots of other games vying for my attention at the moment. It's not the reviews that have put me off, more the style of the game itself.

I played it for a couple hours last night and enjoyed it enough. I played on my Xbox One and it does stutter fairly often. Not a fan of the rigid platforming, either, but I did get nice feeling of satisfaction from exploration and combat. It definitely takes me back to all the time I spent on Dark Souls and Bloodborne.

I like Zelda but I’m not a fan of Dark Souls. It looks like I’m out. I might eventually try it once it is cheap.

My god the performance on my PS4 pro is garbage,I can't believe this crap,it went gold almost a month, from the looks of it nobody actually play tested this game, broken HDR that was completely deactivated with patch 1.03 on PS4,framerate below 30 with freezing and loading in the same area, and if you're in luck it will freeze to load in a middle of a fight, poot camera and lock on system, and the dodge mechanic most o the time is useless cause it react fast enough, and a lot pf cheap death because you're getting hit bu enemies that are off screen

So you can confirm the reviews about the loading and framerate issues on PS4? Damn that sucks. :messenger_pensive:

Yes,and I forgot that with patch 1.03 I'm losing the sound also.I saw today the gamespot review,I was curious why they gave it that score, and everything said in that review its true, but it doesn't deserve a 4,its about a 6-7 for me.

Skill up had an interesting review...

Skill up keep comparing it to Nier Automata but fail to mention that Automata's combat is 1000X better than Darksiders.

Darksiders came before Diablo 3 (which is the only one of the 3 Diablos that might look similar in some ways) iirc.
All saying that I'm not really in to the artstyle.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the og world of Warcraft graphics. Still, I liked the first two, so maybe I'll wait for a price drop. Damn I remember I got the first one for 8 dollars.

Played up to and beat Sloth tonight. Playing on PC, Ryzen 2600 and RTX 2080 with every detail cranked up. For the level of graphics on display, my system should have no problems but the performance is really uneven. I'm not even the type that notices that stuff usually. However, there is fun to be had if you can ignore some of the warts.

I'm liking the combat so far, although it is simplified. I also found a gem enhancement that ups your chances of getting health potions and that has made the game more tolerable.

His point is that this is an indie game, and we should cut it some slack.
Of coure Automata is better!
