Former SNL writer/comedian kicked off stage at Columbia University for 'inappropriate' standup set

Comedian Nimesh Patel took his gig at Columbia University’s “cultureSHOCK: Reclaim” event a bit too literally, apparently. The former Saturday Night Live writer was kicked off stage by student organizers 30 minutes into his set for jokes that were deemed homophobic and racist.

Columbia’s Asian American Alliance (AAA) invited Patel to perform at the annual charity showcase, which aims to provide a platform for Asian-American artistic expression and to break through harmful stereotypes. According to the Columbia Daily Spectator, “Patel’s performance featured commentary on his experience living in a diverse area of New York City — including a joke about a gay black man in his neighborhood — which AAA officials deemed inappropriate.”

Patel quipped that being gay cannot be a choice because “no one looks in the mirror and thinks, “This black thing is too easy; let me just add another thing to it.’” Members of AAA then interrupted the performance and denounced his material about racial identities and sexual orientation. The group gave him a few moments for closing remarks, but Patel pushed back, saying none of his jokes were offensive. He purportedly claimed that he was simply exposing the audience to ideas that would be found “in the real world.” Patel’s microphone was cut from offstage and he exited.

AAA defended its decision to give Patel the boot. “Patel’s remarks ran counter to the inclusive spirit and integrity of cultureSHOCK and as such, the choice was made to invite him to leave,” the group wrote on Facebook. “We acknowledge that discomfort and safety can coexist, however, the discomfort Patel caused was unproductive in this space.” AAA added, “We deeply apologize for inviting him in the first place.”

Audience members were reportedly split over AAA’s decision to remove Patel.

Lmao, this is crazy.

His first mistake? Trying to tell jokes with college campus snowflakes in the audience. His second mistake? Trying to tell jokes with college campus snowflakes in the audience. His third mistake? Trying to tell jokes with college campus snowflakes in the audience.

Jerry Seinfeld warned of this.

This is why most comedians won't go anywhere near a university. Humourless NPC zombie generation.

Did this bit just go over their heads or what?

So he's defending the notion that you are born gay and it's not a choice, and as a comedic example says an oppressed person would not want to be further oppressed. This is sort of just standard leftist positions, you're born gay not a choice, blacks and gays are oppressed.

My college had George Carlin once (blew the whole entertainment budget). It's a shame he's dead, he fought against this sort of thing in the 60s.

Wrong material.

Patel should have made a joke that Asians are smarter than Blacks, and then watch as the audience giggles, looks to the side and behind them to make sure no other minorities are watching them laugh, and then gets off their chair to give a standing ovation.

Reading the quote his joke seems to be affirming the progressive perspective. So what's the trigger here? That he mentioned race and sexual orientation at all?

If you're really stupid and try real hard you can interpret it as saying that you can choose to be gay, in the process you might lose all sense of humor however.

It's always funny seeing them devour their own.

I don’t understand my fellow leftist brothers and sisters. It’s like we go out of our way to be offended these days.

We don't have to make excuses for them just because we fall under some broad, two-stroke brush. I don't expect average, everyday conservatives in America to make excuses for all the filth in the alt-right sector.

Can you, though? The entire premise of the joke seems to be the complete opposite of that idea. All I can think is the outrage mob at that school was in the mood for a scalp.

stand up is pretty much a dead end now a days, can't make fun of anything without some SJW bitching about something.

The lack of context outrage I can understand, but it's bloody comedy. There are a few things you can say that will cross a line, but almost anything can be funny from a certain POV. Hopefully the can learn that.

I did say you had to be fucking stupid, but I'll try to explain what I think their logic is.

Being gay isn't a choice because nobody would choose to be black and gay, because being black is hard enough.

It implies that the only reason you can't choose to be gay is because being black is hard, so if you were for example a white male, and things were easy, you could choose to be gay.

I think this is the only, admittely retarded, logic they could use to be offended at this.

I get the feeling that a lot of these antifa members and college outrage groups have trouble laughing at themselves. I enjoy clever jokes and memes targeted at me as much as those targeted at others. Must be something to do with intelligence. You don't even have to be literate to attend college anymore.

Or that SNL writers are hacks that aren't particularly funny, either could be the case.

This seems like a glorious example of outrage.
There was not even a outrage. I have not read that they booed him off the stage but that he was pushed of because a person did not like his routine.

But this is another example why comedians do not go to universties anymore.

I meant it in its figurative sense, but yeah.

“This black thing is too easy; let me just add another thing to it.’” Members of AAA then interrupted the performance and denounced his material about racial identities and sexual orientation.

If this was the extent of his jokes, which is affirming the struggles black and/or gay people have and also affirming that being gay isn't a choice, then I don't know where the outrage is coming from or why someone would stop him from continuing.

What a joke.

I never understood peoples double standards also, if you are white you can't say jack about anyone. Though if a black, Hispanic, or Asian gets on stage no one cares if they say racist or sexist jokes.

Mostly about the tone used, I'm Arab origin, born in States and grew up in London so more open generally when it comes to comedy aimed at the brownies. I did get riled easily in my early gaf days and in life, but not averse to hearing other POVs and taking anything of value or just agreeing to disagree.

I'll hijack a conversation. Arabs are good at that, hijacking that is. (too soon?) and since my name starts with f I went by f bomb (again they ruined that). So self deprecation is good but you need to not show malice and you should be OK.

Some people have become the most boring, detestable people to be around. How do these types of folks hang out and have fun? What do their discussions when sitting around having a few beers sound like? When and how do they relax, and do they exclude anyone that may be different from them?

How does this infantile view of the world even come about? Day to day encounters when real people who have jobs sit around and talk, often being very crass. Do they wander over and yell at them? Do they "demand" justice?

I cant help but laugh at anyone who gets outraged over anything at this point as life is to short, and hard and finding the time for anger at everyone seems like a futile, and deranged pastime.

Chuckle at those constantly outraged.

thats not really a good point you are making, then again I don't know how many Arab comedians there are, if any.

What is happening in American college campus is surreal. These students are more insufferable than a Victorian era sanctimonious nanny.

its what happens when you let cry babies get their way, and have 0 respect for freedom of speech.

I would argue that's not dead, it's free promotion. I never even heard of this guy until this thread. You're telling me that a comedian offended someone? I would fucking hope so, they're a comedian.

I remember seeing an SNL Louie CK monologue that "offended" me when I heard it. It was the probably the most male feminist, shit on and generalize men bit of comedy I've ever seen. But I wouldn't for a moment try to prevent him from telling these jokes, or act like some moral authority who decides that he shouldn't tell these jokes, or declare him a "bad person" for telling these jokes. The man's entitled to his opinions and making fun of people who don't like to be made fun of, which is pretty much everybody.

Unfortunately, I can't find it on you tube anymore, otherwise I'd post it.

Is this shit going to get worse or are people finally going to wise up and ignore these idiots. They're like 2 year olds throwing a tantrum.

A few about, but they tend to mix it up. Fluffy was in Saudi a few years back and his bit about it (or his fluff piece) was interesting and familiar.

If the joke being quoted was the worst of it then saying this was an overreaction is an understatement.
WTF

stand up is pretty much a dead end now a days, can't make fun of anything without some SJW bitching about something.

Nah it's not that dead. Just don't go to college where everything is offensive and everything you say is "hurting" someone.
Just make a private show so there's only people in the audience that want to hear you and know what your jokes are like

Reading the quote his joke seems to be affirming the progressive perspective. So what's the trigger here? That he mentioned race and sexual orientation at all?

Joking about anything race or sexual orientation/gender related has become a big no no for some.... unless it's white straight people of course
