I had both consoles but the PS3 was just bluray player. It changed when the Xbox One was revealed, i dropped the Xbox and got all the exclusives for the PS3 i missed.
Now i play everything on my PS4.

Loved the 360, but Sony was really killing it with BC and remaster of great trilogies such as Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank.

Today things have flipped the other way.
Yet, Sony is killing it with current gen games tuned to current gen console spec, just as they did last gen, perhaps even more this gen because the architecture is less exotic.....Despite BC last gen, we truly had some of the best remasters and they were very successful too. There's just more incentive to play old games, if you remaster them or remake them, up the framerate and graphics significantly....I played, the entire GOW remaster series because the framerate was much improved and the graphics got a nice lift from Sub-HD to HD......The remasters offered a transition point from older generations, where our TV's were SD before, so it made sense that more people gravitated to remasters as opposed to the BC on offer....

I guess no one can deny the much better frames and graphics uplift....So I played Sotc, ICO, MGS series, GOW series, ZOE series and so many remasters and of course they were in HD for the first time and they also had trophies, which was incentive for many at that time....I know I made sure to platinum the entire GOW series and that trend remains even this gen, it's one of my favourite franchises...So I guess we should look at the dynamics around why people gravitated to remasters for that gen and understand people's mindset then.....

Had great memories of dead rising, lost planet and condemned. But PS3 from beginning to end. Sold my 360 as soon as it came back from rrod repairs.
Condemned was a good game, that's for sure, but that was early days....However, from the time PS3 landed UC1, Folklore, Resistance 1, F1 Championship and Motorstorm, I knew we were in for a cracker..........Even games like Genji Days of the Blade is an under-appreciated gem, that game had some of the best graphics I had seen for an action game at launch, it's still a great looking game today. I wished they'd remaster or remake it tbh.....

You can't play any of these games on a PS3.

Cool, it's nice you like these games, but PS3 gamers had so many unique games, much more than 360, especially from Japan.....So I guess both sides can do some listings, but the volume of PS3 games, especially third party exclusives outstripped 360 by far.....

The 360 obliterated the PS3 for me. Didn't really care for the majority of Sonys exclusives and the system itself and online were bad. Timed exclusives and the actual exclusives made the 360 much better. Everyone owned one, the online was great, achievements, controller, and the os (when they stopped changing it all the time) they were great. It's to bad the next one dropped the ball. With pc picking up popularity I don't see myself buying either next console.

I would take HD remasters, if they would give them to us.

Simply put though, there’s absolutely no excuse for us not at least having PS1 BC. I never would’ve imagined Sony doing this complete 180 as I kept buying PS1 classics on my PS3.

As an online gamer, the PS3 was garbage for a very long time. It wasn't until Sony did what they could to clone all of Microsoft's ideas that they mostly caught up, but it wasn't until the PS4 came out and they could finally copy the party mode that it reached a point where I thought "OK, this satisfies my needs for online gaming now".

There were other aspects of the PS3 that were annoying compared to the 360. Forced installs. Large patches. Having to manually sync trophies. Lack of consistency with features in general.

Most cross-platform games ran better on the 360. Some games lacked features that were part of the OS on the 360, because the developers hadn't manually implemented them on the PS3, such as the ability to mute individual players in some games.

When it came to downloadable games, every XBLA game had to have a demo. Every PSN game did not.

The PS3 had some good exclusives, but then so did the 360.

Where the 360 was utter garbage was in the hardware, particularly with the first 2 revisions, but I wouldn't say it was good until the Xbox 360 S came out. The early hardware was horribly failure prone, clunky, and noisy as shit, especially in the era before they added the ability to optionally install any game in full, cos before that the disc was spinning away in the drive constantly as you were playing. The early PS3s had issues too, but I never had any gripes or issues with my 80GB "fat" in terms of the hardware and never bothered trading it in for a slim - something I can't say about my 360s.

Definitely 360 for me, but I still think PS3 had higher highs. PS3 gave me things I didn't get elsewhere.

Uncharted was the most cinematic and gorgeous thing I ever played. Journey was jawdropping and a true work of art. Hell, I really liked Heavy Rain for its story and creativity!

But 360 got my time with more "gamey" games, less experimental. I loved Halo from since the CE days, Gears was Epic, and Prey/Kameo were great launch titles.

Most games I played were still third party, though, and better ports, better UI, and an actual good controller made it right for me (I couldn't stand the PS3 controller). I am very glad I had friends with PS3s though, so I could play the Uncharteds and Journeys though, but my fav PS3 exclusives could be completed in a day and I never felt a need to replay them.

Unless you have a completely disregard for japanese games, it's not a fair contest at all when it comes to software libraries.

Don't forget Ikaruga, Guardian Heroes, Virtual On Oratorio Tangram and Bangai-O!

The 360 library has many japanese games, the library is larger than the PS3 with tons of games across many genres and demographics. The 360 also has many more games not on the PS3 than the other way around. however I will say the PS3 has more exclusive japanese games on the PS3 than the 360 has more exclusive japanese games.

Otherwise 99% of their libraries are identical outside 360/PC only games and 360 exclusives, so it's really all about preference.

Regarding the bolded - What are you basing this on? Where are you getting your data from, basically.

As for the rest, of course the 360 has many japanese games, but it completely missed out on tons of great ones, where as the PS3 basically only missed out on a select few. Again, unless you have a complete disregard for Japanese games, the PS3's library tramples the 360's library. I love my 360, but let's not kid ourselves, people who completely disregard japanese games aren't the norm, which is evident if one remembers the PS3 completely destroyed the 360 in every single country except the US and the UK.

Not sure if im following you but the 360 has better Japanese games. Cave's 360 output alone makes it nearly untouchable.

Cave's stuff is part of the reason I love my 360 so. But your point is moot since apart from shmups it's japanese library is much less robust than the PS3. Basically, if one follows your logic the PC Engine becomes the best console ever. One's unique perspective as a fan of a particular genre doesn't translate to which machine best serves the interest of the majority. For example, if you love Mech games the original Xbox is an absolute force to be reckoned with, but it's pretty obvious the PS2 had the superior library, overall.

The REALLY Slow load times and download speeds for the PS3 really killed my enjoyment of the console.
Preach! Though the 360 wasn't much better when it comes to download speeds, sadly... but at least the user interface wasn't as needlessly cumbersome. -.-'

Uh game lists? The 360's library is quite a bi tbigger than the PS3's.

The game lists on wikipedia say otherwise, acually. 2208 games on PS3 Vs. 2103 games on the 360. Excluding PS1/PS2 classics and Xbox originals, of course.

Regardless, assuming you're not parsing said lists one by one by yourself to arrive to such conclusions (that the 360 had more games not on PS3 than the other way around) where are you getting your data from, specifically. Asking because I want to check it out for myself, always down for some curio scavenging. Googling is getting me nowhere, sadly. =/

It's hard to say. When 360 came out it had everything going right then RRoD killed some momentum. PS3 had a very challenging start but got their shit together by the end.

Retail Library.

Also both actually have more games than what Wikipedia says.

Xbox 360 had a ton of games that were not on the PS3 by third-parties like THQ, Ubisoft, Namco and others for the first few years and that's excluding the PC/360 exclusives which go on until basically the end of the 360's life, but slow down in output post Kinect. Then you have Kinect games on top of that.

The PS3's main exclusive domination was in digital titles. A lot of that had to do with PSP/Vita cross games as well. Which gave it a good boost in that regard as well as total library count.

Games like Condemned, Saints Row, Far Cry Instincts, Quake 4, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II, Prey, Star trek Legacy, Shadowrun remake, Battlestation Midway, Battle Station pacific, Hour of Victory, Two Worlds, Risen, The Witcher 2 etc. as well as many other cross PC games were on the 360 but not the PS3, and made up a big part of the retail library.

Overall the 360 library is bigger put together, you have to wayback machine allgame(Allgame.com) to get most of the complete game lists though and use other sites for the last few years (2013+) but before 2013 All game has pretty much a list of every game, you'll just have to remove the BC games from the lists, as well as same game by different names in different regions. Wiki is unreliable, especially since they are changing all the game lists and removing mentions of compatibility and exclusivity because they don't want thing to "look like a catalog" or some other garbage. So the last like 2-3 gens of game lists are useless on Wiki now.

Ps3 alone for bluray player and the exclusives(fat princess, katamari, yakuza, naruto, lbp, killzone) but without them of course i would choose the 360.

This is exactly why I'm asking you where you're getting this from, because unless you're going to substantiate such a claim with cold hard numbers, I can't be sure it's reliable, now can I? I mean, listing 14 games means very little when the PS3 had that many exclusives not available on 360 in a single year towards the later years of the gen.
I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm merely asking you where the info is coming from specifically since I'd very much like to play around with such a database and I very much doubt you've actually been counting these by hand going through allgame, right? I have no horse in this race (I'm a Nintendo + PC guy, but tend to buy all the consoles if there's enough good exclusive games to be played on them, which was the case for both the 360 and the PS3), I'm just curious. Can't access allgame through wayback machine since it's only available for download and I'm currently limited to just my tablet.

That aside, why does the games being retail matter? How is that not just a cherry picking fallacy?
Also, which are the PSP/Vita games that are also playable on PS3 you're talking about? The only such cases I'm aware of are the PC Engine stuff (of which there are very few) and the Minis (which aren't included in the wiki numbers). How incomplete is wikipedia in such regards, anyway? How accurate would you say it is? 80+%?

I feel PS3 was strong for most of its lifespan, whereas the 360 was good early on, but very quickly started focusing on the wrong things (IE Kinect). The 360 had some good exclusives but they mostly came out early on, and it felt like the system was hardly supported in the last few years.

Obviously, free online is a huge win for PS3 as well.

You have to give it to PS3.
PS3 had much better exclusives. 360 had better performing 3rd party titles but it wasn't that big a deal outside of the odd Bayonetta or Skyrim ports.

Xbox 360 absolutely no question.

Some of the happiest days of my life were days where me and my friends were playing Halo 3, Gears 2, Reach, MW2, Black Ops etc.

The first few years of exclusives were amazing too though some did eventually go to other systems... Oblivion, Bioshock, Mass Effect etc.

Then there is all the other stuff that 360 nailed like party chat, Netflix streaming (360 was the first to be able to do that), DLC (Halo maps and of course Oblivion content like Shivering Isles were groundbreaking at the time), and Achievements.

Xbox 360 for all its faults will always be my favorite video game console of all time.
All Xbox One had to do was be a 360 but with better graphics and they would have murdered PS4 this gen.

Oh well

PS3 by a long shot. I never had one go out but had 4 360s fail within 2 years.

Games? Still PS3. The 360 became very boring after the first few years. I can only take so much Forza, Gears and Halo before I ask what else they've got. The original Xbox had tons of great games.

And before you think I'm just a fanboy, I'm a PC dude and the PS3 was my first PlayStation system. Xbox was my number 1 since it was in the PC family in my eyes.

Was always a PlayStation fan but the early release of the 360 made me switch. Also in the first 2 years every multiplat game looked and ran way better on 360. Then the RROD thing happened and they said my motherboard was fried and i had to buy a brand new machine.

I went to PS3, MGS4 came out and al the stars alligned again.

I actually bought 360 first because it had great games like Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia and even single player western game like Alane Wake but they kind of just stopped and at some point I realized that I haven't touched my 360 for a very long time and was mostly playing my PS3 so I sold it. My answer is the first half I liked 360 but the rest I was mostly playing my PS3.

I'm exactly the same way about the xbox 360 starting out was amazing but it went out with a wimper. The ps3 ended much better than it started since it kept up a good pace when it's gears starting moving right up until the end. I think I do prefer the xbox 360 since they had higher highs for me with vesperia, odyssey, and even blue dragon.

Superior build quality

Nah, that Super Slim though, that was some Styrofoam trash. And it only had like 12 GBS of storage. Not sure what they were thinking with that. In comparsion 360 E is beautiful. it's like by the end of the Gen the build quality switched between the two lol.

super slim and 360E came out after PS4 and X1. people already moved on to the next gen.

Actually they both came out BEFORE both. Also even after they DID come out the PS3 and 360 were still selling and thus why people were complaining about a long period of cross-gen games.

So you're wrong either way.

The ps360 era lasted seventy years you just have to pick the very last year to compare build quality. Did you know the first generations of PS3 were superior than 360 all generations?

70 years huh? Also 360 Elite had good build quality.

besides the point anyway, PS3 Super Slim was very odd and it still wasn't $99 so all that cutting for nothing.

XBOX Live Indie Games alone has 3.398 XBOX 360 games..

Most of them dont even reach the Unity Personal Edition quality but some of them worth a look.

Considering the PS3 ended up outselling the 360 in the end, I'm not sure where such a conclusion is coming from.
The One is pretty kickass machine in it's own right, by the way... I'll definitely be getting one somewhere down the line!

Oh, wow, that's pretty impressive! Shame the service wasn't available everywhere, I'm sure there must've been a fair share of gems on it I missed out on... *edit*: Hidden in Plain Sight is one of my go to multiplayer games on Steam to this day! Great fun. ^^

You can still play them on a hacked console, i've seen at least +2.500 games preserved and there's a patch for offline play (they were online-only games in the original market).

I'll probably have to get on that, then. Probably when I get a One, which shouldn't be that far from now, hopefully! Thanks for the info!

Xbox 360 - XBLA!!! Xbox Live!!!, streaming aged better (I still have both hooked up to a CRT) I love that it has Internet Explorer

EDIT. I honestly can't pick I've always used both at the same time for different things #HDTWINS

PS3,thats the one I owned.

Infamous,Uncharted,Resistance,Motorstorm,Killzone,Ratchet,God of War,Last of Us......I enjoyed all those series on PS3.

The only couple of games I felt I was missing out on from Xbox360 were Mass Effect(which PS3 got eventually and Metro 2033 which came to PS4).

The thing I like most about Playstation is always the lure of the new unknown IP always around the corner.

Sony was so far behind in the online service that they had to give it away for free, multiplayer is too big of a deal. and the ps controllers, yikes. 40-50 gaming hrs on my PS3, at least ten times that on my xbox. LIVE got me of Sony for a long time. Until Mattrick entered the arena, lol.

I went X360, it was no contest for me.

I was a year late to the X360 party. I was having fun with the Wii and had just gotten back into gaming after a hiatus. Forza 2 was the game that , like Gran Turismo before it, made me head out and buy a console to play. It also introduced me to the Halo series, which would become one of my favorite Sci-Fi universes. The Gears or War games were great, and the racing game library included everything I could want, like PGR, Forza, NFS, Burnout, Dirt, Burger King Pocket Bike Racer, etc. I much preferred the controller to the PS3's despite the garbage-tier D-pad. Xbox Live Arcade was always great, and filled with excellent games like Shadow Complex and Castle Crashers.

I got my PS3 after the X360. mainly for Gran Turismo. I got multi-plats on the X360 as they were usually better, and sometimes were vastly superior, like Bayonetta. I found a lot of the AAA games like Uncharted, MGS, and TLOU were great to look at but I didn't enjoy playing or re-playing them nearly as much as the games I had on my X360. There were some outright fantastic games I couldn't play on the X360 though so I had to have both. By the end of the gen, my PS3 mostly had become a Blu-ray player for the cabin, while my R2-D2 X360 is still in my living room.

It doesn't hurt that everyone I worked with, and everyone in my family that played games had an Xbox, but only a handful of people I knew had PS3s. For years every Sunday night was hours of online racing on Xbox Live.

I'd say the biggest downside to the X360 was the hardware failures. But even there, I had just gone through four PS2s the previous gen for a variety of issues, which is part of the reason I took a break from gaming. Sony offered me no help each time despite being within days of the warranty and it left a bad taste in my mouth. My X360 Elite was well out of the warranty period when it RROD'ed, and they still took it, and had a replacement shipped to me that week. That Elite is still running at my brother's house, I know because I can hear the fans from here.

No reliable source for this exists. Just estimates.
Are the numbers on VGChartz not up to date? Goddamnit, where is one supposed to go to get reliable info on such matters? -.-'

Regardless, considering how localized the 360's dominance was (outside the US and UK, the PS3 stomped it), your point is still shaky at best. I actually quite enjoyed the rivalry, though... had a ton of fun with both, in the end.

Regardless, considering how localized the 360's dominance was (outside the US and UK, the PS3 stomped it),

Almost half the 360's LTD was outside NA region and the UK.

It was ahead in Central and South America

It was ahead in one of the oceania countries.

It was ahead in one northern europe country (forgot which one)

and there are several countries where the PS3 was ahead but was not "stomping" the 360.

In comparison, for the Xbox One, outside the NA region and the UK, only about maybe around a 4th of its LTD is outside those territories. Some areas earlier this gen it was doing faster than the 360 but the PS4 was way ahead (1 year delay in most territories doesn't help here" and as of last year they lost those too.

So no it's not shaky at all, the 360 Sold well in most areas it was sold in. It also sold well after the XBO and PS4 came out. It's just the Xbox One since 2015 has been localized more and more to a certain region that people are forgetting that the 360 was doing much better.

Again, I have no dog in this race, but the Central/South American market shouldn't even be taken into consideration, here. I lived in Buenos Aires and Santiago for almost a year at the time (2 semesters away while at Uni) and both consoles were an incredibly rare sight... the market there was not healthy at all during that gen, it was completely insignificant. The prices were insane, so it's not surprising! Do bear in mind the 2 countries I lived in are the most prosperous on the whole continent, so I can't even imagine how barren it must've been elsewhere. By the way, link me up to where you're getting this info from... I have a feeling you guys must think I'm trolling with these requests but I really just want to know for sure since for some reason these claims are always coming from posters who reek of fanboyism (no offense) when it comes to their defensive reasoning and none of you seem to want to cough up any sources. I want the sources for personal interest, like I've told you before I have no dog in this race (I'm a Nintendo/PC guy).

As for not being stomped, you have to be living under a rock to be telling yourself that. It was everywhere in the UK but believe me, it was a completely non entitiy in europe. It was essentially the Sega Saturn of it's gen over here. I moved to the UK in 2014 and it's quite true it was absolutely dominant over there but it's presence was a joke in mainland Europe. As in, I had to import most of my games for it from the UK because stores just didn't bother getting games for it.
I'm not telling you this to "be right", I was a 360 owner and met this frustration head on. Thankfully, importing within the EU is easy peasy so I could get pretty much anything from the UK but I'm not selling you lies when I tell you it was a barren desert regarding 360 support over here. At least that was the case for Southern Europe, where I'm from. I lived in Portugal, Spain and Italy during those years and constantly got "mocked" (jokingly, of course) for having a 360 instead of a PS3, it was complete Sonyland around these parts.

Of course it was probably ahead of the PS3 in plenty of other individual countries you've failed to mention, the point of mentioning those 2 specifically is that those are the relevant markets. Basically, outside of USA, Japan, Germany, UK, France, Spain, Italy, Korea, Australia and Canada, you're dealing with essentially insignificant markets (not an insult, I am from and live in one of those insignificant markets).
I wish the One was doing better over here, it'd be easier to get deals on it... shipping is a bitch when it comes to hardware. =/
