Sony plans to "bring PS4 games to all devices" according to latest job posting

Apparently there's been a job listing for Sony to for people to help bring their games to mobile. Not a whole lotta detail but it seems that this would be more evidence that streaming is in fact the future. According to this video, the job posting was sighted on

https://www.greenhouse.io. I'm not familiar with the website or how to search for specific job posting so this video will have to suffice.

EDIT: Took me a lil bit but I believe this is the job posting:

https://boards.greenhouse.io/sonyinteractiveentertainmentplaystation/jobs/1373230

"As a part of Sony Interactive Entertainment, the Cloud Gaming Engineering and
Infrastructure (CGEI) team is leading the cloud gaming revolution, putting
console-quality video games on any device
."

Not to start a flame war but should this happen it would lend credence to the argument that Sony often copies popular ideas from other consoles.

A couple of questions regarding this...

1. I've seen people say they rather have their PS4 exclusives on one console. If this is you, do you feel slighted now that Sony is matching Microsoft's strategy?
2. I've also seen people mention that streaming to all devices would leaves Microsoft with no true exclusives. Would the same apply to Sony should this happen?

Admittedly, the person doing the video prefers Xbox, but it doesn't negate the fact that the job posting exists. Check it out and let's discuss!

This was inevitable. Anybody who didn't think otherwise didn't see the trends.

We will likely see Sony offer games day 1 because only offering old games isn't going to help grow the service.

This has been a thing for awhile now.

The arguement/case with Microsoft is that you're effectively able to gain a better gaming experience on the PC with the ability to install the game locally and use your own capable hardware. Meaning no streaming. Game streaming as of right now is still a sub par experience.

I think you might have somehow mistook the OP. This is not just PS Now on PC. This is PS Now on ALL DEVICES. Mobile, tablets, you name it. It's exactly what Microsoft is planning on doing. Did you watch the video?

PSNow for more devices is expected as the next step. PS5 will be one of them.

But playstation is a worldwide brand, it is not US centric like xbox. There is a whole world outside the big markets where playstation exist and tech is subpar. That's why a console is still so important to reach more countries where xbox mindshare is insignificant, for example.

Of course nothing is set on stone. Things will change with time and sony will be ready for them.

They're not copying. They already had (dunno if they still do) PS now on PCs.

Didn't care for PSNow and won't care about this if it even happens.

Streaming games is not my preferred way of gaming on consoles or PC. Let me download the game once or install/patch from physical media and I'll be just fine.

If they go full streaming, I'll stick to whatever games I have that don't depend on it, if I'm even into gaming that far into the future.

Hmmmm...until today I don't think anybody assumed that Sony was bringing their games to ALL DEVICES. I shouldn't have to keep writing this in all caps. Bias aside, let's face facts. Microsoft announced this a while ago and now Sony is following suit. Even by your logic it still wouldn't work. Microsoft has had select games on PC since who knows how long. Oh wait, actually i can give you an example. Remember Shadowrun? Let's see that released on xbox and pc back in 2007...almost 12 years ago.

Didn't care for PSNow and won't care about this if it even happens.

I wouldn't think they'd make any games streaming only. That would just limit the reach the game has. Kinda defeats the purpose.

yeah no, as PS now only for Western Europe, North America and Japan tho because their infrastructure is shit. Make available WW first like their console hardware then we will talk.
SIE AFAIK not like Microsoft whom invested for their own cloud data center, they still heavily dependent from others like Amazon's or google's. SIE need to pray that they never going to gaming business then......lol

PSNow used to run on TVs and Xperia phones. It was discontinued from those devices due to lack of demand.
Now that the big companies are making such a big fuss about streaming, Sony is going to bring support back to those devices, and more.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
PSnow has already been on other devices other then PlayStation and PC, They've had it on TV's and Mobile and it was pulled after a year or two.
Not sure what's different here

I think the main difference here is that Sony is all in now that Microsoft and Google are all in. That much is clear. I would think the demand is low because the service was not up to par. I don't even think demand is high now. I don't generally see anyone raving about streaming. I think it's good that Sony is now showing that they are properly preparing for the next generation and NEW competition. What I'm concerned about is the time factor. Sony has had Gaikai for a while. It seems that now they may be putting it to use. I'm curious to know if they'd been developing it this entire generation like Microsoft has been doing with Azure. Everybody remembers Microsoft and "The Powah of teh Cloud" back about 4-5 years ago. First game that used some function of the cloud was Titanfall if I remember right. So the question is, if this posting is an indication of Sony getting things with their cloud services up to snuff, is it going to make it by 2020. If it does, would it match the quality seen in Google stream right now?

I want to see all sorts of smaller indie games playable on your phone, sold through the PSN app, and controllable with a new compact, pocket-sized bluetooth controller. Just porting PS3 and PS4 titles alone that could run on a phone would be awesome.

To be fair, I've read comments of people who tried streaming AC Odissey during Google's open test, and it doesn't seem to run spectacularly either. Of course, streaming is just like that. YMMV.

OP you are reaching hard and suggesting you don't want to start a flame war but linking to a bias YouTube channel and reading both too much and too little in a job listing

If you look at the job listing you would see it is for a back end developer they are hiring. So what exactly do you think is going to change with this hire? Sony have the backend already to get it to other devices you need to hire to create frontend apps not backend devs. That throwaway quote on the listing is saying CGEI exists already and is providing those services for 'console quality games' (does not even mention PS4 BTW) on any device. This mantra isn't even new:

They have had this idea and even executed it back in 2014. What do you think this hire is for, what exactly are you getting from it?

Everything will be streamed in 30 years time anyway. There won’t be physical consoles or pc’s, just dumb terminals and ultra ultra hd screens. Perfect way to censor and control the population.

Ok well first of all, I posted the video simply because that where I first heard this information. I openly state he is biased towards xbox. The questions I posted after saying I'm trying to start a flame war were genuine questions (which not many people have answered) because I see the bias towards Microsoft when it comes to exclusives and their branding of it. Nothing is set in stone but if Sony continues on the trend copying Gamepass (offering downloadable games instead of just streaming them, some might assume that PS4 Day 1 Exclusives are going to be on "any device". They may not do this, who knows, but its no story to anybody that Sony tends to follow trends and put their own spin on them. Microsoft has had their moments too, but I don't think they are as notorious for it. A couple of good examples. Wii does gangbusters, here comes Move and Kinect. Nintendo classics sold out everywhere, Xbox gets good PR for backwards compatibility, here comes Playstation Classic and assuming backwards compat will return for PS5. Although to be honest, Sony had BC on the PS3 and PS2 (I believe PS2 did, not 100% on that) but then got rid of it to lower the price of the PS3. PS4 doesn't have it...their words were , nobody wants to play old games....but then they release a PS classic. Um, what?

So I don't think it's a stretch at all to say Sony is basically following in Microsoft's footsteps...quietly. This isn't common news and I believe that's on purpose for a few reasons.
A) Sony isn't showing their hand til their custom event in 2019 at least.
B) Sony may still be in an exploratory phase, much like Microsoft is with XCloud.
C) Sony may not want to look like they are just copying Microsoft.

It's a bad look for them creatively if that becomes the perception. It's the very reason a lot of folks are quick to dismiss the OP saying Sony was on TVs and Sony phones. I'll even throw you a bone. Let's say this gigantic picture you posted was in fact from 2014. Sony has also been characterized as often over-promising and under-delivering. That picture, if from 2014, would just be another glaring example of this. It's 4-5 years later. If you could tell me what conference this is, I'd like to watch it because it's either one or the other.

As for the backend devs, front end devs, I won't pretend that I understand what that is, because I don't. I figure from context that what your getting at is that the technology to stream is already in Sony's hands. But, we all know that. You and others here seem to be missing the point. Sony had all but given up on PS Now UNTIL Microsoft saw success with Gamepass and announced Xcloud and Google started beta for Google Stream. That's all I'm saying.

So now Sony is planning on doing the same thing MS said they were doing and got slated for, I’m sure all of Sony gaf will still stay on board the hate train and tell us all how it’s an awful idea that dooms them and is a waste of time? No? Because I’ve read some seriously sad and pathetic fanboy rubbish on here, but that thread showed some people really would marry their plastic box if they could.

Just let me sign into my PSN account and play on my PC, without streaming or a need to subscribe to something like PS Now and ill buy your games Sony.

I have a PS4 pro btw I just want all my stuff in one place without having to switch inputs.

MS already does this. Its so much faster for me to launch a game, quit a game start a movie, do some work browse the web..... The PS4 is so sluggish.

TBH streaming games was not feasible in 2014. Arguably it isn't feasible for the majority of users even now, but back in 2014 it was just a plan for the future.

PSNow used to work on mobiles and tablets if you install the apk from bravia TV's before they pulled tv support last year

you xbox fans really need to calm down. If Sony didn't beat MS this gen we would had some problems with dat MS from 2013. Spencer learned a lot from sony this gen.

So we don't need a ps4 to play games?

SONY HAS NO EXCLUSIVE GAMES ANYMORE!

Xbox gaf are always doing some strange comparisons.

If I own a gaming PC and all the exclusives come to PC day one, then my Xbox console is going to feel irrelevant. It's reasonable for people to feel a bit frustrated if they invested into an Xbox console only to have their game end up on PC day one. It also means they don't have to pay for Xbox Live.

DF found no improvement to latency on the google service testing AC Odyssey, and that’s the latest tech.

Not sure how physics can possibly be defeated going forward without some hybrid device running part of the game logic locally.

A lot of people will be on suicide watch if that happens. I mean, how can they go on living knowing that someone on the PC can enjoy their "exclusives"? They won't be exclusives anymore, and their lives won't have any meaning.

And if I don’t own a decent gaming PC like the majority of gamers ...?

Back on topic, if Sony is shifting gears again it’s because they see what the future potentially holds for gaming and really can’t afford not to adapt. I’m glad they are potentially getting back to streaming stuff on multiple devices.

Unless they make PSNow for the Switch, they shouldn't say ALL devices. But can you imagine both Sony and MS release their streaming clients on the Switch? It would suddenly become THE device to play all current gen console games, lol.

AC was running at 30fps on Project Stream and it almost mached the Xbox version. Latency would improve by running AC at 60fps or even higher on the cloud.

Improve, yes - but it cannot be completely removed either. Short of some really funky (as in, far beyond our current understanding) new physics being discovered, a streamed game will always have higher latency than a local game. Whether this matters to the average gamer is another debate. But staying within the current topic, I don't see Sony running the games at any higher framerate. It's not like they're porting the games, they are still running on (rackmounted and custom) PS4s. Perhaps with PS5 (if it is BC) the games will run a bit smoother, but without a PS5 patch I wouldn't hold my breath for an automatically higher frame rate.

I'm pretty interested in how this will play out.

I think streaming is a benefit to the likes of Sony but not necessarily for the players.

Streaming would allow them to charge a subscription fee rather than selling games individually.
Which means it's easier to gauge how much to invest in new games and avoid potential massive flops.
I think it would lead to cheaper development overall as games could be streamed in pieces.
So the next Horizon for, example, could have a huge map split into 4 sections for 4 story "acts" with each part being released separately.

I think flops like Battlefield V and Fallout 76 combined with the runaway success of "free to play" Fortnite is going to have a massive, observable, impact on the industry as we move into the next gen. Subscription service seems to be a good way to "split the difference" there maybe.

I think for some, less competitive, online gaming or for "mobile style" gaming a streaming service would be pretty decent.
For people looking for single player, cutting edge, stuff I still think the traditional way of having the hardware in the living room will be the way to go.

What do you even mean by "completely remove"? Streaming vs local gaming is not a black and white comparison where local always wins. There are already comparisons you can make like Fornite GeForce Now at 120fps vs Fornite Switch at 30fps, where the Geforce Now version will have lower latency if you are close enough to the server. Latency should improve more as there are more/closer servers as well other hybrid methods and machine learning start to be used.

Completely remove, as in, with streaming you'll get the added latency of what light takes to travel from the server farm to your destination and back (in an ideal situation, in practice it'll be more). That's the bit that always will be there, unless we can get around the speed of light. So, comparing an identical game running streamed vs. locally, the local version will always have less latency. Having a game running on a PC at a higher frame rate bears little relevance here, because the PS4 games being streamed are not PC ports but running on PS4 hardware.

Streaming = nope, as long as we don't get good enough conditions.

We already don't have the same conditions we had on CRT + wired controllers on our LCD + wireless controllers. I personally won't accept even more lag/delay and compression/bad picture quality.

Just because you heard MS might be doing something similar first does NOT mean Sony got the idea from them. These things are planned out long before the public hears of them.

Not to mention Sony invested a ton of money in streaming technologies years ago and have been using it successfully for quite a while.

Of course having the game playing on a server will add latency compared to the same game running at the same framerate locally. What I am refuting is that not in all cases the streamed game will have a higher latency. We will start to see more and more games running at higher framerate on the cloud to compensate for the added network latency. Also check other methods like the ones below.

They used to be on TVs (I had the app on my Sony TV before they patched it out), their Xperia cell phones (but you can jailbreak other phones to run the app), tablets, etc.. They scaled back on the other platforms more than likely to focus on maturing the tech/backbone more (without being spread too thin), it was only time before they had plans to re-expand, especially with the articles several months ago about them investing heaving in their online infrastructure/restructure going into next gen.

As others have said, this is inevitable. They understand all too well about revenue growth from such an infrastructure... since they lead the market with 52% share of it at the moment.
