No new games in 2019, unfinished backlog only

Two friends and I have already made a pact. But GAF is my friend, too. Do you want to try the challenge?

- Purchasing new games is acceptable. Testing them to make sure they're not lemons is acceptable.
- Otherwise, no playing games released in 2019
- No playing games purchased in 2019
- No "new to me" games, only games that you've already already purchased, already beaten, or at least started it up at some point in the past.
- Starting a new save file is acceptable, in cases where you've started the game but want to begin fresh.

Honor system, obviously. I will track my progress here. Feel free to participate and/or throw tomatoes.

Reward Tiers:
"Ultimate Star Platinum" Crusader Medal

You have persevered and played 0 new games in 2019. Your capabilities as a Stand are mostly close-range, but that hasn't stopped you from prevailing against every temptation. 2019? A whole year? Time means nothing to you. ZA WARUDO!

Triumphant "Dabbing Fortnite Golduck" Participation Medal

You have maintained a ratio of 10 backlog games to 1 new game. You have evolved from the TV show's joke character into a respectable Pokemon that boasts a smug attitude and respectable moveset.

Halfway Decent "Distracted Kanye Meme" Participation polycast acrylic "trophy"

You were able to manage 5 backlog games for every 1 new game. Eh, genius gets distracted sometimes, you know?

---

Yoshi Yoshi has rightly pointed out there is no tier for people who've already kept their backlog small and tidy.

Therefore, for anyone who can finish their backlog entirely during the year of 2019, I offer:

The "Yagami Light already did all his homework" Certification of Backlog Grooming. If you have completed your whole backlog by the end of 2019, then you are already 10 steps ahead of the rest of us.

But isn't a new Pokémon coming to the Switch? And a new Animal Crossing? If I made this pact I'd be breaking it real fast. Good luck!

I actually tried something close to this in 2018. I had a huge backlog, so I limited my videogame purchases to $60 a month, tops. This involved subscriptions and hardware. And I actually did OK. Many months I spent less than $40.

I used to buy tons of games on sale and never finished them, now I saved money and tackled some of those old games.

I'm already doing it for a year (only bought spiderman in 2018).

This year maybe only Siege season 4 and Shenmue 3 that is already paid

Ys IX I will wait the western release

Maybe only Cold Steel III if announced for this year

Dude, I've been desperately waiting for Yoshi since 2018. I can't wait any further.

I've already pre-ordered Travis Strikes Back and I want DOA6 just enough that I'm going to buy it and maybe...just maybe...Cyberpunk 2077 could be coming out this year. So no, I can't.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I tried this last year and quickly realized that it's the "working out new years resolution" of gaming. If you can make it a few weeks, good for you.

Never been a huge RE fan, to be honest. If it's good, maybe I'll get it next year.

I have games purchased in 2014 I still haven't beaten. It's time to take a breather year. The good stuff will still be around in 2020 when new consoles that I won't be buying come out.

Besides, I played Alienation in 2018, so that's still on the table. Isn't that all you want from me? :messenger_loudly_crying:

Truly a great idea. I might consider it since I am going to making a lot of changes in my life. I could use the money I would save from doing this.

Last year I only played one game released in 2018. So I know it's possible to do this, clear a big wadge of the backlog, and have fun. But I kinda have my sights on building a PC in spring so unless I have a sudden change of mind I'm pretty sure I'll want to use it for something like Cyberpunk.

It's a great idea. There are Zeldas I've never played, a ton of shmups I've never 1cc'd and arcade games I've wanted to get stuck into for years. But.... RE2 is out in a few weeks and I've been waiting for a proper sequel to RE4 for years. Apart from that I could be in.

I'm at the tail end of 5 solid years of building up a collection (like I said, I have unbeaten games from 2014).

But if you're building a PC... I mean, you kinda have to play whatever is cutting-edge that year.

What about earning a joker card after doing 5 or 10 of backlog games gets cleared :p just seems a bit Cruel to go cold turkey like in approach. However i admire it all the same, good luck :)

I mean, it's just one year. How hard could it be?

I mean, if that's your caveat, by all means participate. Your secret is safe with me.

:lollipop_trophy:(participation)

By all means, if you have to make a caveat, participate.

Gold participation medal is 10 backlog games for every 1 new game
Silver participation medal is 5 backlog games for every 1 new game

Or similar rules. You pick. Hey, I may have started the thread, but I don't set the rules. [vis_name][/vis_name] does.

Already failed, got RE2 as late christmas gift. :messenger_loudly_crying:

But I did finish DMC1 and DMC2 this year already, so that's 2 down on my backlog only 4 days into the year

Platinum participation medal is 0 new games, good stuff im in i will be Gunning that gold participation medal then as There is just No way i can ignore kh3 after 13 years anticipation.

I'm already way ahead of you.

I've played no 2018 games and only one 2017 game - Hellblade with my $1 month of gamepass, but it's not a game I bought. Didn't even bother with Forza Horizon 4, also free on gamepass, as I'm still working through FH3.

So many great games, but they can wait. And they are usually $80 new here in Canada. I'll take games for $20 Alex.

For me only one new game in 2019, that is RE2 and I have very big backlog so this is good solution for me ^^

You'd think so. Knowing me the first thing I play will be someone's homebrew RPG Maker 'masterpiece' from 2010. It will be very telling to see what I do play with no limitations.

I spend a lot of my free time streaming and I don't wanna miss the boat on Anthem. I got a feeling this game is gonna be huge. Buying it twice (PC and Xbox One X). I respect your commitment to this and I'm eager to see how it goes. I am far too weak in willpower to pull this off. Cyberpunk too man! Last of Us? Ghost of Tsushimi....ok now I'm just trolling tryna get you to give up.

Good Luck man.

I'm down with this since it's pretty similar to my own little gaming resolution. My resolution was to limit how many games I have installed on my PC at any one time, and can only replace the ones I beat starting off with all 3 Dark Souls games.

I never got too far into DS despite owning all of them. The furthest I ever got was killing the Gargoyles... not can't even get past the Taurus Demon. I tried to cheese him, but it can jump onto the tower. I was not aware of that.

Why exactly did you make these concessions? I don't see why you would want to buy a new game you aren't going to play in 2019, when it'll probably be cheaper the next year. And the testing seems like cheating to me :messenger_tongue:

My backlog would love this, however RE2R, MLB 19, Division 2, and so so many more games....can't do it

I tried this a few years back and failed dismally. Obsidian already have my money with 'The Outer Worlds' for certain and if as people suspect CDP might ship Cyberpunk2077 towards the latter half of the year.....well that's a done deal also. Beyond those two I can't think of much that is screaming for my attention in the AAA space, however, I'm always prepared to give new lower end games a shot if I think they are worth it, and not all of those have a big fanfare in terms of an announcement.

As is the aim is to boil down some of the current backlog by making an effort on the 52 Weeks challenge . I want to clear off a few big titles, but I have a lot of smaller games in my backlog and it should be possible to work through a lot of those.

If at the end of the year I have fewer games than I started with. It's all good.

Two specific reasons:

- If I bought a used game for a retro system (let's say I spotted it in the wild for a good price), I'd want to test it by booting it up to make sure it works.
- if the game has a limited printing, which is becoming more commonplace nowadays, I'd want to pick up the game and shelve it for later playing. In those cases, there is no "probably cheaper the next year".

There's a possibility that I will be doing this anyways just because of a lack of interest in most of the announced games so far, but there's at least 3 I can think of that I might buy.

I don't expect Cyberpunk to come out this year, but if it does I will get it immediately.

The Outer Worlds looks like it has all of the awesome character that the older Obsidian games had, so it's a strong possible purchase.

MechWarrior 5. If the game play looks as good as the old MechWarrior games near release, I probably won't be able to resist this one.

I'll just start now with the expectation of failing. ☺. I'm currently playing Middle Earth: Shadow of War, BFBC2 multiplayer, Steamworld Dig 2, and Yoku's Island Express.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Even though there aren’t many big titles announced for 2019, I’m gonna pass cus I know I will eventually buy some games. I know that my backlog hurts, but I just can’t stop buying games.
