You don't think Felix is well versed in memeology? He single handedly made two of the biggest memes of the year.

I get not wanting to watch him but he is pretty damn knowledgeable about current events and memes.

But whatever. He isn't for everyone. Thanks for bumping :)

I don't care about meme (why should I?) nor I think he is knowledgeable about "current events" unless you talk about video games and/or internet culture.

Lost a lot of respect for him when he promoted Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson shamelessly.

Although he didn't do it in a political context, when you shout out a guy who's popular for "destroying libtards with facts" and another who confuses "Neo-Marxism" as being post-modernism (the two are actually the opposite), my heart kinda sank. I always found it a bit hilarious that people uphold Shapiro as being their hallmark of intellectualism and justice when he's such a nerd, this geek, this dork, the guy who was the running backpack kid in high school; probably the guy a lot of poeple who watch him were bullying in their younger years. The irony definitely doesn't fall flat. Peterson on the other hand wrote the most boring tripe I've ever tried to read. It's literally 12 rules to be nice to your parents, to clean your room, and believe in God. Who reads this garbage and thinks the guy is smart?

It's fine anyways since I don't watch Pewdiepie for his intellectual acumen but for entertainment purposes. I definitely don't agree with everything he says but when he stays within the context of memes and other internet silliness, he's good at it.

His channel is mostly just reactions but he's entertaining, he gets a pass.

It's really silly and childish to lose respect for someone who promotes people who you disagree with and are clearly biased against. I don't know about Shapiro but Peterson has rightfully earned the respect he commands. Maybe not through his book, of which you gave a shallow reading anyways, but through his lectures (maps of meaning, personality, etc...).

I mean Peterson supports him on the free speech issue and Shapiro is in it for the memes. I thought Felix did a great review on 12 Rules For Life. He didn't gush about it and said some parts were pedantic but he thought it was motivational for people struggling with issues like that.

The Ben Shapiro thing is literally a meme. "Ok this is epic" was pretty popular. And having him host meme review was just a funny gag.

I am glad to see more level headed people don't just drop Pewds because "he had those Nazis on". It's ok to be disappointed by people's personal politics.

When you have a platform of millions and you promote a guy whose entire persona is centered around right-wing conservatism while adopting certain alt-right talking points when it comes to immigration policy and other sensitive domestic/ foreign policy talking points, you inherently promote what he stands for.

It's the equivalent of me bringing a well-known misogynist or the likes of David Duke on my YT channel and having them read something funny then brushing it off like it was one big joke. Whether or not you discuss their politics, promoting them on my channel would inadvertently signal that I'm comfortable with the message they give out outside of the context I publicized on my channel. Note that Pewdiepie has not come out and said "Shapiro was just for memes; I don't support his politics" clearly. He just said "it's for the memes."

Comedy does not excuse all shitty behavior, but as usual, if you happen to be the kind of guy who's defending an intellectual hack whose career ended in academia long ago in Canada and entered the public discourse in the guise of presenting himself as rational/ smart, you have simpletons like yourselves who actually do listen to him and think he makes sense.

The fact that he'd utter the words "neo-marxism" should completely discredit anything he has to say because there is no such thing as neo-marxism. It's an anti-intellectual red herring that attracts people who don't understand Marxism beyond "Equality for everyone and everything" (which is not what Marxists claim at all; we're actually quite anti-egalitarian when it comes to resources and production since it doesn't work). Ultimately, he's just a repackaged 2010s Ayn Rand for conservative white males so I do understand why people would even listen to him; if you stand for intellectual rigor and scrutiny, there is nothing to listen to anyways, hence why I dismiss right away and any other serious academics don't even touch him with a ten-foot pole.

Why would Pewdiepie, a Swede living in the UK, even remotely care about Shapiro's politics? There was a "this is epic meme", which led to, "wouldn't it be funny if Shapiro commented on Shapiro memes", which led to the video. That's it.

Strange how someone whose career in academia ended long ago, is still listed as faculty at a university. There's plenty to dislike about the man, but if you want to call someone out for spewing bullshit, you might try and not do it yourself.

You obviously didn't list my point below which says if I bring David Duke or some other covert right-wing TV personality with racist undertones on my channels just for the memes, you essentially sanction whatever he does outside of the context you brought him on your platform for.

I don't think Pewdiepie did it intentionally, but that's what he came across as doing. Whether is a meme or not, we shouldn't trivialize a guy who spouts hate against people because of their skin color, their gender, their social class, their intellectual acumen, and many other factors that make him the little ball of hate that bastard is.

Strange how someone whose career in academia ended long ago, is still listed as faculty at a university. There's plenty to dislike about the man, but if you want to call someone out for spewing bullshit, you might try and not do it yourself.

How unsurprising to see so many gamers attracted to individuals like Peterson. His writings are for all people who think they are disenfranchised but don't even understand the meaning of the word or have any clue what being actually disenfranchised is.

The reason why I say his career is terminated in academia is because his research has always been discredited in serious academic circles hence why he branched out on his own in the public arena; he doesn't even pretend that whatever he's spewing is coherently academic anyways hence why he has stopped writing for his supposed milieu.

When you call out all of your academic colleagues as being undercover "cultural neo-marxists" because white male privileged culture is being attacked, what credibility do you have anyways? This is the last thing I'll say about Petersen: the terms "cultural neo-marxism" and post-modernism should never be in the same sentence together nor should they ever be likened as being one and the same, which he does constantly. It's intellectually insulting to people who've actually studied philosophy and post-modernism.

I don't want to derail this topic, but your dishonest misrepresentations and hot takes merely display your own ideological biases. It's quite evident that you can't handle Peterson's criticism hence why discussing this subject with you would be a waste of time because you're quite apparently incapable of putting your ideological blenders aside in order to reflect rationally on his body of work. So before you go around calling other people "simpletons" while desperately claiming intellectual superiority, you should be aware that true intellectuals don't argue by throwing around insults and silly hyperbole.

the terms "cultural neo-marxism" and post-modernism should never be in the same sentence together...

Sartre.

Ah, that must be why his scholarly citations have been sharply on the rise these past few years:

There's certainly a lot to criticize about Peterson, but accusing him of being an intellectual hack ain't it. Get a grip, your level of discourse is embarrassing.

This isn't an academic forum. Sartre and other post-modernists espouse values that are opposite of classical Marxism. As far as I'm aware, Sartre has never used the term "neo-marxism" and I've read his works both in French and English. If you truly want to discuss post-modernism and its relation with Marxism, it'd be better to reference Derrida.

And I'm sure all these citations all have to do praising the guy's work and not simply tearing it apart.

If you want to stay in your echo chamber that he has anything relevant to say, as I said, there's nothing to discuss. If you want to waste your time and discuss why transgender people are bad, be my guest, nobody is interested or impressed. As I said: he's simply the new conservative Libertarian of the 2010s. He hasn't said anything new or relevant that hasn't been said since the 60s. Young and uneducated people are attracted to this crass and anybody who openly aligns with Peterson's values outs themselves as ignorant.

Speaking of not saying anything "new" or "relevant"...

Did you have anything else to elucidate your point? Otherwise, you sound like the same YouTube comments that name-drop a fairy-tale education they supposedly have while offering no further substance.

The whole shtick about "anyone who does [thing] is ignorant" is hardly new, especially over the past year on GAF.

I'm sure you will reply to this with supporting arguments and well-measured investigation instead of broad-brush attacks.

Most people don't care enough about someone else's wrong work to write papers about how they're wrong, they're too busy working on their own stuff. It happens, if there's a contentious issue getting a lot of attention, but you don't get 500 citations when people think your work is wrong, that's not how academia works. If people don't like your output they will simply ignore it, you won't get published in good journals and you won't give talks at conferences.

He went really light on snakepaul and ricecum. They deserved more of a roasting and humilation. If you watch their gambling video it's so disgusting. They act like they just found the answer to life. How is it acceptable for such a public figure to go around promoting a way to fasttrack you into poverty for their own financial gain? Both snake and cum's audience are children too. I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to do this, but that they should face social repercussions like humiliation. This in my opinion is worse than any other of their scandals but it's not getting as much attention.

Redneckerz

Those long posts don't cover that red neck boy
What is really going on in this thread? Is this all just one big ironic finger to the other site or are we really P2P fans here? I can't tell by skimming the last few pages
The latter. It just so happens that the other site hates PDP for obvious reasons, just like how they hate Tim Soret or even more innocent people.

I don't have interest in hearing opinions about stuffs from people who don't have a competence in the topic they're talking about.
Except he does. You should check some of his more serious stuff out.

Also, I don't like watching people playing games or reacting to something; I feel it's a waste of time, exactly like this post.
But you clearly wanted to achieve something with this post. Like a response? Because congrats, you got that.

It's fine, not gonna judge them. Personally I have other things to care about ;)
Yet here you are in this thread caring about this Youtuber you supposely do not care about. :pie_thinking:

And since you don't care, how do you know he is incompetent at the topic's he discusses?:goog_unsure:

He uploads new content every day bro. He covers topical stories and internet memes. If you are too old for memes and funny jokes he is probably not for you.

You can alwayes make your own appreciation thread for YouTubers you like. Who do you watch? I'm 32 so I'm interested to hear who you think is so much more funny that has original content every day. I need new subs.

Just stop at this point. You can't possibly know every single background of every random person you come across on the internet. And he's not even promoting the guy smh. it's a fucking tik tok compilation for christs sake

Edit: i googled "Baked Alaska" and got nothing but recipes. Must be someone seriously popular. Also people in the comments are rather defensive towards pewdiepie, thank god

I like some of his humor. He is a very conflicted youtuber for me because he seems to bounce between pandering to 9yo from reddit on one hand and shitposting like filthy frank/idubzz on the other. Some of his videos are him randomly screaming like r*tard(obviously to pander to kids) but then you have videos where he is more sarcastic and jokes about real world things/youtube drama. I like the latter.
