Wow, ok let's see how this pans out for consumers. Will the next Destiny be alot different in terms of expansions, microtransactions, dlc etc. I am sure it will. .

Interesting. Though at this point is Destiny worth keeping? Kinda rather see them move on to something else..

Halo: dead
Destiny: dead
Battlefield: dead

Call of Duty is still king baby. You can't mess with the king.

Awesome news for Bungie. Even though I haven't been a fan of them since Halo CE, I'm still happy for them. I knew in my heart little good would come from that merger.

And they get to keep Destiny to boot?

How the fuck did that happen.

Again, really happy for them.

Very unexpected.

And also... exciting? I liked the first Destiny. Gunplay and aesthetics were typical Bungie quality which is all I needed out of the game. I skipped Destiny 2. Maybe they'll get me back with 3.

I wonder if this was the point. So that they wouldn’t feel obligated to stay focused on one game like destiny just like they were with halo

Edit: just saw the other post. Makes sense.

They probably got it because Activision thinks the brand is poison.
Activision had nothing to do with their shitty tools and game overhauls. They gave Bungie a lot of rope - enough to hang themselves with Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 was basically what D1 should have been. Good campaign, fun gameplay, great raids - just didn't have a lot of staying power (which I personally don't mind, I prefer a game that has an end outside of MMORPGs).

As someone who knows nothing about this, I will suspect this is beneficial for both sides. Activision will no longer be unhappy about losing more money on the investment, and Bungie can grow the franchise/company as they see fit. Likely that the game will be better for it (in the short term), but long-term might not be as good for Bungie (money and stability-wise) than if they'd stuck with Activision and done more of what they wanted..

This is sorta unreal. This means D2 could be the last released destiny with this one getting updates for the forseeable future.. D3 Would have no restrictions on outside intervention? Marty could come back? Like shit Bungie just revived themselves.

Wow. This is unexpected. I expected Activision to keep Destiny for sure. What does that mean for Destiny 3? It should be in development, right?

No need for Destiny when COD is on rebound, Crash is selling great, Spyro is selling Great, Seiko has hype, and several other big tites on the horizon.

Bungie seems to get worse each split, so I'm assuming their next non-Destiny game will follow the line:

Halo

Destiny Worse than Halo

New Ip, Worse than Destiny.

I think people are getting their hopes up thinking all the bad stuff associated with the Destiny franchise is all Activision though.

Bungie going to self publish? Good luck with that. They better not spend too much money and close shop after their debut.

Sony buyout with them working on the Resistance/Killzone/SOCOM franchise moving forward would be funny.
PlayStation doesn't have a FPS studio that's stable yet they have a handful of IP's in the genre waiting to be used to critical acclaim.

Because Bungie bought it (or otherwise compensated Activision in expected return related to the IP or other exit clauses).

I don't know what the contract looked liked, but I would imagine it HEAVILY favored the publisher. Bungie had to do alot of things to break free of the agreement. Activision would not have just let this go without getting compensated for it.

I guess this announcement reminded me that Activision never owned the Destiny IP, just publishing rights.

Good negotiation on Bungies behalf I think. Hopefully their next title will be more realised than D2.

Activision lose money on the investment??? That is kind of a revisionist history?

I wouldn't say Destiny is dead...yet; this has this the potential for them to kick ass on their third title, or take the reigns more on 2.
I want to know more about that break up.

Sells mega interesting.
I 100% agree; this makes me very interested in what's going on with Blizzard.

With their current crusade of "cost cutting," across the company, to me it would see this is par for the course on that.

Development studio willing to buy out your portion of the IP, as well as not having to shoulder the costs for a game they budgeted for much higher performance than they predicted.

Seems like a standard break up...I just want to know more about Bungie's dealings with them. I wonder if this whole cost cutting endevaor has been going on for longer than they've been publicly vocal about it.

It would explain why all the games seems to have changed focus on what they are mainly good at to what the successful parts of all their titles are and mashing them together.

I’m surprised they can afford to go it on their own.
I'm not, really. The large part of the costs are already taken care of; tons of assets and code already done...infrastructure already there for the online. Combine that with crowd funding (Eugh...) and presales, etc and you can publish a game off that.

Look at Shenmue 3, or Bloodstained!....yeah!.../s

Better case scenario for them would be to either get in bed with MS again or Sony. Sony should honestly really be on this since they're very lacking in the FPS genre. I doubt Nintendo is an option in any way and worst case scenario would probably be signing a deal with EA, which as always, sets the countdown clock to a studio's doom.

I have to say I am shocked that the split happened and that Activision did not get to keep the IP. Bungie did a terrible
Job meeting their end of the deal. We should have Destiny 3 by now with expansions.

I wonder if Activision felt the third game was going to do poorly and end up costing far more to publish then they could recover with sales.

I personally have stopped with Destiny after they announced that forsaken and the new season pass were going to cost as much or more than a new game; that is ridiculous especially after the crappy first season pass. Bungie is no friend of gamers.

This is great news. Bungie is ready and big enough. Forsaken is great. Let’s go!

They always owned rights to ip

Remember that?

If that is true then Destiny will back to the roots better than ever... Destiny 2 casual was really a bad choice.

I will be happy again.

Destiny should be only Destiny with updates and expansions every year.

Destiny 2 should be only Destiny Year 3 or 3.0.

Even after Forsaken Destiny is a vast superior experience than Destiny 2.

Destiny Year 1 was the peak of the franchise.

This is cray cray, expect destiny 3 to come sooner rather than later(As now they need a game out without activision) and for it to be stock full of DLC, Skins and whatever to afford a big ass 300 people studio like bungie. Also expect it to be rushed to market. Being Indie has lots of downsides for a studio with the talent like bungie, like the fact that their employees and their benefits are expensive.

I expect a hardcore Destiny again... make it happen Bungie.

this is huge. it means activision no longer wants to fund Destiny and with the success of black out might create its own cod mmo.

Bungue also said they were working on a new IP. I say this is the end for Destiny.

Good thing I guess, though I have soured on Bungie. Destiny wasn't bad solely because of Activision.

Would be nice to have Bungie in the Microsoft fold again. Even as a independent publisher that Microsoft bankrolls. Microsoft invests equity in this partnership and Bungie retains complete autonomy over creative and business decisions.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
So, will it migrate outside battle net app or what happens now? Or would only sequels be affected and D2 is left as is and abandoned once they wrap up the last planned DLC?
