Bungie Splits With Activision, Keeps Destiny

I have no idea what this means for Destiny, but hopefully good things so I can get back into it some day. I played the series for many, many hours and dropped it a couple months after D2 released because of the state of the game and all the bullshit.

Waiting for news now if Destiny 3 is coming or if they're going to take a break from it or what. Maybe just a new IP all together since Destiny is kind of ruined just by name alone.

Phil Spencer will end E3 2019 with the announcement that Bungie has returned to Microsoft Studios. Destiny 3 teaser trailer (Windows 10 and Xbox exclusive) with a brand new IP in the works. That would break the internet.

So, will it migrate outside battle net app or what happens now? Or would only sequels be affected and D2 is left as is and abandoned once they wrap up the last planned DLC?
This is what I expect. Destiny 2 dead and destiny 3 rumors this summer, out next year...maybe. launch title for new consoles

Honestly at this point I like Activision more than Bungie

Activision gave me Crash Nsane Trilogy, Spyro Trilogy and soon CTR

Meanwhile Bungie give me Destiny which is total crap so I'm not sure how to react to this news

Anyway good luck Bungie on your future project

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!

If it dies with such a naff end I think they should ditch the name and go all out with a new coop FPS IP instead of D3 to also ditch all the system and story baggage and rethink some things and features.

But I guess them wanting to buy the publishing rights back means Destiny 3 is what they intend to make, oh well. Maybe Destiny Subtitle and make it a reboot at least to shed some baggage :(

There's no way D2 is dead. Bungie still has content to make that's been paid for.

And sure, it can do the bare minimum, but I can't imagine alienating your core is what Bungie had in mind.

Good for Bungie, I'm sure they are happy.

Probably great news for fans of the series. I hope they try and return to a single player game development now that they don't have to answer to Activision's investors .

Don't get too excited. They've signed a $100,000,000 deal with NetEase to make non Destiny IP.
Until they split from that, I don't really consider them fully independent.

Maybe they could go f2p with Destiny 2? Probably not but at this point it's the only way I'll ever play it again. Just copy Fortnite somewhat and make cosmetics able to be grinded or purchased with a slight variation so people know if you bought or earned it.

Lets be realistic here, chances are high they'll get a new sugar daddy soon. So expect the likes of Tencent, NetEase or Nexon investing in the company.
That said, I hope this means they can release D1 on PC, I never played it so felt lost and not very invested in D2's story.

Can you imagine if MS bought them and reunited the Halo franchise with them? Probably would help both parties, honestly.

I think people are getting their hopes up thinking all the bad stuff associated with the Destiny franchise is all Activision though.

This is my thought process here, and I still play d2 regularly. Seeing them talk about self publishing and what have you makes me laugh thoug. Bungie has a huge studio, and without Activision money I can’t see them lasting long without going back to M$. I think they will keep dropping little mini content, (which I haven’t enjoyed with ba yet) but I feel like they want to move on from destiny. They have lost a lot if not most customer loyalty with what they have done with destiny 2. I truly feel the hit they had with destiny 1 may have just been a happy fluke and they ran it’s course. We will see, with division 2 and Anthem on the horizon maybe the writing was already on the wall

They will publisher their own now...

I can understand after they suffered a lot sigh MS and Activision.
Maybe I'm not following correctly. How did they suffer under Microsoft?

From most of what I've read I come to the conclusion that Bungie is great at certain aspects of game development. And... they are piss poor in other areas.

Didn't they originally leave MS for independence and then got into a deal with one of the companies most known for milking their IPs to death?

This is the best thing that could happen to Destiny. I hope they also stay independent and not being bought by Microsoft or Sony.

Given what happens now to Bioware we know that Activision is absolute shit. Bungie was never bad hey are great game developer but they need absolute Freedom.

Maybe so, but absolute freedom and time cost somebody money. That has always been one of the many issues with Bungie and I think a big reason they wear out their welcome. Now they will have nobody to blame but themselves if they are begging to be bought out in the next couple of years

Activision lose money on the investment??? That is kind of a revisionist history?
Activision said they were unhappy by D2 sales. Between that, and the amount of competing with their own project (which they might've considered at the outset), it probably seems to be more trouble than it's worth to keep funding? Also this frees up other sub-studios to contribute to COD.

Bungie left MS because they didn’t give the freedom to Bungie work like they wanted... read make the game like they wanted.

Seems like the same for Activision where Bungie wanted to focus in the hardcore community while Activision wanted that dam casual sales.

In both case Bungie got hurt because they couldn’t do want they wanted.

The implications for MS and Sony are huge. On one hand, Destiny for Sony was kinda their flagship playstation fps title and they even cancelled their Santa Monica sci-fi game to let room for their destiny deal. On the other, MS has different management compared to 2014 and is just hungry. I want to know what happens to the playstation exclusive content deal now.

Ain't happening man. Destiny has sold more on PS since the start, that would be crazy.

If you would otherwise be a new player, investing in d2 sounds like a poor strategy at the moment. One would think that game is going on maintenance mode as they invest in a new game which they will get 100% of the proceeds.

so where does that leave destiny 2 on battlenet or any future destiny releases. which are under the activision title on launcher.

Activision want to keep investors happy.

Bungie want to keep gamers happy.

I like to see Bungie to succeed more after this.

Genuinely trying to understand that's all, especially after all the stories that have come and gone about studios in the games industry getting screwed over.

I can't remember where I read it, I think it was a Jason Schreier article a while ago about what had happened between MS and Bungie. Some other sources I think. But it was something like MS was quite baffled about Bungie cheering and popping champagne. As if they thought working with MS was the worst thing ever.

I think it's great Bungie are going independent. I'd be really worried about them dealing with the business side of things themselves.

Bungie should be in the position to self publish. That’s pretty huge to see them grow to this point. I’m surprised they didn’t sell off the ip but also glad they kept it because while it all started with halo I’m much more of a destiny fan at this point.

I wonder when the self publishing starts tho. It’d be cool to see it happen while the annual pass rolls out.

I still expect d3 to be a new game from scratch ... I want to know what carries over already.. even tho we might be a ways off but this may have changed things.

The whole thing always seemed like Activision wanted more money generated annually than Bungie could keep up with in terms of content production. TTK and Forsaken are good, those four "first year" interstitial expansions for $20 a pop.... fuck no. Hopefully this all has a positive outcome.

LOL go eat shit Activision!

I would love to see them go back to MS and be given a chance with a new IP though they'll most likely go to Sony.

Don't know why people are so excited with Bungie, they made terible game with Destiny

Don't like Activision Call of Duty game either but with game like Crash, Spyro and CTR they absolutely have the better offering

I know Activision is hated around here but if I have to pick between Activision or Bungie il pick Activision all day

this gives bungie an opportunity to be in the good graces of the consumer after being in activision's shadow for a long time.

but i reckon only one shot and if they mess it up, that is it.

This is a big deal.
They signed a 10 year, multigames deal. And got out of it with the IP? Damn, that's cold.
It almost tells that destiny was a failure.

Once again... Bungie always owned the destiny IP. D3 has been in production since before forsaken. What I want to know is when these changes occur.

We already know some details from the same leaker that had 10000% legit for everything from forsaken up to this point... everything.

It features Europa. Has pvpe mode; guardians vs dark guardians and corresponding new abilities and is supposed to go much further on rpg elements and whatever that may entail.

The dlc model used in both D1 and D2 is obsolete even tho this year’s annual pass is bette than the absolutely nothing we got post taken king. To provide the content needed they kinda need to go the sub route.

Bungie has no intentions of being bought by an ms or Sony. This has been stated... don’t want to see it happen either. Silly fanboy nonsense

Yeah, they will for sure continue on with their scheduled releases, but I highly doubt it's supported beyond that. Now is isn't a good time to invest in destiny 2 if you're a new player.

There was originally a year 3 and another holiday release and pass planned.

With D3 coming the question if whether to keep playing D2 arises. Does my gear cross over for instance?

However, I will say this... doesn’t matter when you jump in. It’s still a game and can be enjoyed at any moment in time... even if you just so happen to catch it in it’s last year before the follow up.

However... it’d be safe to assume that plans may have changed. This year’s roadmap is staying the same.

Whoa.

This could mean really good things for Destiny.
Do you really think Activision had a negative influence? they probably put bungie on a pedestal, them getting to keep the ip is telling
Bungie is the only one to blame the state destiny is
