A company announces it has bigger ambitions than ever, and is now its own publisher with the ip, fan base and ability to do take the risk but lol, lol, lol, lol who still plays destiny. Right? Shitpost express on this train.

Was there anything as significant as this since Bungie left Microsoft to begin with?

Like I mentioned earlier. I can’t recall the last time a company cut ties like this for bigger prospects.

Y’all got your hopes up with blizzard tho.

I still wonder if year 3 has been reworked. We’re still looking at less than two years worth of d2 content with activision if those plans haven’t changed

Activision is in an interesting position, on one hand, this, and blizzard is not in a good state, on the other, they now revived Crash and Spyro to huge succes, and they still have Call of duty, and they are looking for external developers like From software making Sekiro. Crazy turn of events.

I'm surprised they cared that much about taking the Destiny IP. They could throw darts at a wall full of generic ideas that could come up with just as good of a world.

Agreed. They should have sold the destiny IP for whatever peanuts they could get for it to help them self fund for their next game. I'm completely done with this franchise, they need something new if they want my cash money.

They probably got it because Activision thinks the brand is poison.
Activision had nothing to do with their shitty tools and game overhauls. They gave Bungie a lot of rope - enough to hang themselves with Destiny 2.
No chance. Activision stock will take a hit from this. Activision will hold on to any brand they can that makes money. They are only giving this up because the studio demands it, and they must have had the power to do that in their initial contract.

Anyone know why Activision is crunching all of sudden? Are they in financial trouble or is something else going on?

I don't have any idea what Activision is doing. They held on to brands like Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero for years past their prime. Why would they cut Destiny/Bungie loose so quickly and easily?

At any rate, I'm excited to see what happens next with Destiny. I've kinda stopped playing since October, but a full sequel or revamp would probably get me back in.

I would say that a full revamp or legit sequel would be necessary at this point. They screwed the pooch with D2, imo

i would personally make a new game at this point and keep monetizing destiny to feed development

All the creative resets and technical hurdles were problems of Bungie's own making. I dont doubt Activision monetization oversight was a detriment, but I can't see how this split equates to a brighter future for Destiny. It just means Activision saw more value to its internal studios working on other projects instead of churning out expansions to save Bungie's lackluster base installments.
My sentiments as well. It's too early to "celebrate" Bungie's independence. Painting Activision as the evil overlord is easy but I got the impression from all the rumours and write-ups of development troubles of Destiny 1 and 2, that Bungie made a lot of the bad decisions themselves. Maybe there was pressure from Activision to do so but still, we don't actually know yet how Bungie will fare on their own.
The split also means that Bungie don't have High Moon Studios and Beenox to help out with content for Destiny.

IMHO, this is potentially good news but I wouldn't be surprised if Bungie ended up being bought by NetEase or Tencent down the line... It is really hard to get a feeling of how Bungie will fare on their own.

Don't know why people are so excited with Bungie, they made terible game with Destiny

Don't like Activision Call of Duty game either but with game like Crash, Spyro and CTR they absolutely have the better offering

I know Activision is hated around here but if I have to pick between Activision or Bungie il pick Activision all day

Crash and Spyro are remakes, yes? That doesn't say much in terms of Activision still having the ability to create new IPs.

At least Bungie gave Activision Destiny which itself is still a popular IP.

It doesn't work that way, only if Bungie is on the market, and if I remembered well they were once owned by Microsoft and they bought their way out.I believe they will want to stay independent
No way they are going to stay independent with the size the studio has. Just imagine how much money they are burning each month on salaries alone... I do not think they'll be able to do this for long with contract work, especially considering how messy their dev cycles tend to be.

No,Activision gave Bungie money to make a new IP,I don't think the quality of Destiny has anything to do with Activision,at least this is what I kind off feel about that game

We'll see, they have Destiny they can go free to play, change things to that game, look at the guys who made Warframe and look at Insomniac, they're independent and with the latest Spider Man their value increased, sure It doesn't work for everyone, but don't be sure of things to come

So...how to play D2 on PC now since it's using the Activision launcher?

That will probably remain the same since Activision was the publisher for that game.

If they come out with a new one however, Bungie is free to do their own thing if they self publish.

I actually enjoyed Destiny 2 and I really didn't like the first one, but I think I can see why and why other people didn't feel the same way.
I really didn't like how repetitive Destiny 1 felt, and even the campaign itself felt repetitive, while Destiny 2 had way more variety with more open maps, I had a lot of fun doing the campaign in coop with a friend.
The end game might not be as interesting, I don't know, and that's probably where people prefered the first one, but if you are not into grinding and just want a fun coop campaign, I think Destiny 2 is still a great option, depends what you are looking for.

One thing I would have liked would be more "realistic" environments, I really loved earth, but was not a fan of the other planets, I don't really like the flashy "no man's sky-ish" environments.

I can't believe this! I am going to remain quietly optimistic. Many people speculate that most of the bullshit stuff is Activision-related, now we get to see. Please course correct Bungie, the fans miss you.

I know a lot of people are celebrating this and expecting change, but I don't see it coming. A lot of the stumbles with Destiny were Bungie's fault to begin with, and they're even the ones that decided on the microtransactions. They're just as greedy as Activision, and this time they won't have their supplemental development studios to help bail them out.

This is for the best. I don't think Bungie will be joining anyone for a while. They just removed their ball and chain.

If Jason Schreier is saying it's the bestest of the best for Bungie & Destiny, I'd put a huge question mark over the whole situation. I really don't buy the Activision = Satan incarnate narrative spun by certain wishful thinkers who want to imagine Bungie without Activision (evil corporation!) will somehow deliver far better games. Following the same logic (publisher responsible for the state of games), we could conclude Microsoft itself should have received praise for the first Halo games, i.e. after all, they were great. It's neither here nor there, all we know is this split wasn't part of the previously vaunted "ten year plan" & Destiny 2 most likely underperformed for xyz reasons.

Well, at least Destiny 3 will be on game pass, might actually get me to try it at launch this time.

Kind of surprising yet not too surprising considering the two have had a troublesome relationship. I think they will end up staying independent unless they really fuck up and get into too much financial trouble.

Don't care, I would really like them to fix the fucking matchmaking that's been broken since the launch of Destiny 2. You can't blame Activision for that or the myriad of other problems Destiny 2 has.

I wish bungie the best. For me destiny was a failure. I bough it on launch played it for two months and couldnt after that. It felt empty and repetitive and for the fans out there I hope good things come.

I highly doubt they would want to tie down a successful multi-platform IP like Destiny to a single platform 3 games in. Its a brand they are going to want to grow, not contract by cutting out swathes of their addressable market.

F2P or similar is far more likely, and that $100m from NetEase is a major indicator of the direction they are heading in. That's a lot of money, and they are going to want an even more substantial return on their investment in order to justify it.

LOL
Not going to happen
What's to laugh about,of course they can,if Sony goes to them and asked them to make an exclusive game that Sony will financing it,and if the deal is good, they will, they need to get payed,Bungie is a big team they need money, look at Insomniac, they made a game for Microsoft and after that they made Spider man for PS4,because they get money for doing it.

Exciting times, exciting times. I loved what they did with Forskaen DLC.

There can only be a good outcome out of this. Actually stoked :)

I'm more curious about how they'll handle the PC version of the game. They had Vicarious Visions to help them with it. Can they manage to handle it themselves?

Vicarious Visions did not handle the pc version. That was Bungie

Can't imagine Destiny remains on the Battlet.net launcher.

But who knows. Been wondering what happens when the next COD comes out. Do they keep adding to it?

Some interesting notes... Bungie is now ~2nd biggest independent dev. Bungie employees were cheering in their town hall meeting when it was announced/

D2 I would imagine would stay until the publishing deal is over. Details of the deal may have changed as we were still looking at d2 content into the late half of 2020.

I’d rather it all go under the Bungie umbrella sooner than later and not just with d3. We should expect some details with each weekly Bungie blog tho.

What’s the biggest independent game developer if Bungie is second largest?

That failure still brings 350k players per day only counting Crucible... if you add the single-player mode it don't know where it will be. It is something games like Battlefield never reached and only CoD have better numbers.

Of course at tuesday and near new content launch D2 peaks at around 1 million players per day.

It is actually huge but lower than D1 that had a crazy big player activity per day.

If they can back franchise with what it was with Destiny plus the quality changes found on Destiny 2 then you will bring back that user base.
There is no limit for what Destiny franchise can reach.

Can't imagine Destiny remains on the Battlet.net launcher.
A simple patch removes the Battle.net launcher... it is only there for PC version.
