This is what I was talking about earlier, people project their life experiences and world view on others as if everyone should feel the same way they do. That’s vain.

It reminds me of the sports fans who say “I never heard the N word at the stadium so it never happened!” People enclose themselves in their bubbles.

I don’t speak for anyone else. Neither do you. My only agenda is hoping that people at least tolerate the need and desires of different people, and be willing to make some harmless concessions and compromises, when it comes to silly things like gaming and movies

Do you realize you just did the same? Just because you know sports fans who think this way doesn't mean that all people in this thread are the same.

I don't need to do concessions and compromises, because for me there is no difference between a gay and a straight person.

So a question regarding the actual story here:

Everytime a non-straight character is added to/revealed in a videogame will it always require someone justify it to you?

Well, not having a black person in Kingdom Come: Deliverance needed quite some justifications and a lot of outrage, so I don't see why we must not pay the enemy with the same coin for myself.

I agree that the Kingdom Come situation was ridiculous. I even mentioned that in my post in the “Punisher goes WOKE” thread. I don’t blame anyone for being annoyed by that nonsense.

Also, I hope I’m not your enemy. I’m just a harmless dork.

The only way to win identity politics is with identity politics, sadly one side chose this to happen and the other side got dragged onto it.

So basically outrage is going to be an endless cycle with either side taking turns?

I mean, it’s just a panel in a comic book. It’s not even in the game (Soldier 76 being gay).

Edit

I know I’ve reached the point where I’m just repeating things from the first page, and that probably means I should have quit a long time ago

Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't care about any Blizzard product after Diablo III but I know that people who chose to be outraged and offended at everything are pushing changes, sorry if you don't like it, no one does, but the middle ground got lost 4 years ago.

Most people are not pissed because 76 is gay. It's about how and when Blizzard did this.
Unfortunately, in todays world, a world full of artificial minorites and victims where we get teached that we're all different that's what happen if something as unspectacualar as this happens.

If a mod sees this can you please ban me from replying to this thread, thank you.

They call it 'locker room talk' in the US. The white dudes be coming up to me with that shit tryna dap lmao
This is normal human discourse, and it happens whether you're male, female, white, black, straight, gay or anything else.

It's just people gossiping. People talk about their lives. It's human nature. If 99% of people are straight then yes, 99% of the conversation is going to be straight people talking about their relationships. That's how numbers work.

Is "locker room talk" considered "problematic" now? Seriously?

For the record men, your girlfriends are almost definitely talking about all of you to their female friends behind your back. "Locker room talk" is not relegated to men. The only difference is that most women don't limit it to just the locker room.

Allow me to stress, I'm not saying this in an attempt to label it as bad behaviour. It isn't. If you're a decent person, people talking about you shouldn't be something that bothers you. If people are talking badly about you, that's mostly likely all on you, not them.

This is pretty much the current reality on this planet.

Everyone gets a turn.
Indeed. It's very easy to not be a part of it though. Simply don't indulge the outrage. That includes the outrage that you agree with. Nobody at the moment is outraged because they actually care. They're "outraged" because it helps to pay their bills.

It is an economy. And you take down an economy simply by not giving it your time or money. If people stopped being constantly offended, this shit would go away overnight.

I think the reason for his is no even that he is gay but rather how the press etc reports on it. The current climate and Atmosphere regarding these things is fucking toxic and hostile on all sides. eople are just tired of AAA developer and the "press" using diversity as an advertising and rating reason. I am honest the moment I see a female main protagonist for example: I already think. How strong and independent will she be? and I go through my head making checkmarks on all the feminist bullshit tropes Developer like Bioware are using over and over again.

Strangely this is only the case with AAA games while Indy games have TONS of diversity but they do not sell this they have it naturally integrated in their games. They do not make a big deal out of it. And so it does not feel forced and annoying but rather coherent into the world, characters they have created.

I’m not trying to be unfriendly. Just turn off the notifications and ignore the thread.

Also quit being so hard on yourself. You keep dissing yourself across multiple posts.

This forum is friendly. You are simply taking this way too personally. That is on you.

Exert some self control. Spend less time obsessing over your thoughts and just do what you think is right.

So a question regarding the actual story here:

Everytime a non-straight character is added to/revealed in a videogame will it always require someone justify it to you?

Or basically, is this discussion going to be required every single time?
The first time I played Mass Effect 3, and I was talking to Steve, he casually mentioned "My husband such and such". At that moment, I cringed. Why? Because it was mentioned so casually, that it basically did not seem like reality. Not to mention it felt extremely forced to portray it as 'normal', ironically. His character could be a lot more developed and interesting, if he actually was hiding this aspect of himself, and ultimately revealed it in a specific moment after he gained your trust. I imagine someone that is gay could feel that experience of needing to hide a lot more than the casual version.
But this is not what they wanted to do. They wanted to show a future, where casually mentioning your husband as a man during one of the early conversations is normal. It is a shallow representation of what gays maybe want but extremely far from what they actually go through. Things could be a lot more interesting within the game if the issues with being gay were brought forward, rather than pretending everything is fine and dandy. That is one of the issues in every media out there and the representation of the queer community.

That being said, I didn't dislike the character, and near the end of the game
where a shuttle explodes with him on it,
I did hope he was ok, and I was
glad he was
. Despite the initial cringe, he was a good enough character, which ultimately I cared enough for to not want him to get hurt or die. Inevitably, the question arises, why the cringe moment needed to be there. I could have lived without it, obviously. And then I really have to wonder, if such a basic thing makes gay people so happy, that it is worth letting some part of your audience cringe (I doubt I'm the only one).

Forum boards like this do a good job of putting certain things under a magnifying glass and making them seem disproportionately relevant. The most logical course of action to me if you're in the "who cares" camp is to ignore what you truly don't care about and let stuff fall to the bottom. Everytime someone posts or responds these threads got bumped again and again. My gamble is 80%+ of the people who participated in this thread don't regularly play Overwatch and even if they did wouldn't know about this ordeal through conventional channels of information flow. Basically manufactured outrage. When you're waist deep into a hobby the details of minor importance get a lot more focus and attention when most people from the outside looking in are scratching their head. Despite being in the LGBT camp myself the people in this thread who talk about agendas or what's normal or not get nothing but a chuckle out of me. If you go looking for conspiracies or secret agendas you'll always find them.

I liked Jare, I think he just needed to stay out of this topic after he said his piece and found himself going in circles. He was a reasonable voice for left ideas, but you can't take what people say on the internet so personally. It's the internet after all. If you read this Jare, hope you'll reconsider participating in the community. Otherwise, happy trails.

Damn Jare got too heated and just kept going at it. I don't think the last few posts were that unreasonable there was WAY worse things people said in prior pages.

Anyway, regardless of this conspiracy about agenda pushing or how to masterfully write how one man loves another without cringing. Blizzard has made Soldier 76 gay and he's staying that way. It makes me wanna play the game but I don't wanna suffer playing a game that is unbalanced as fuck.

So yeah, Soldier 76 is homosexual, if you don't like it 2 bad. That's it, that's the topic.

Legit question, not being rude (would like to make sure this is stated since this is a touchy subject and there have been melt downs)

Why does that make you want to play the game?

Now if they announced that they are overhauling his abilities and making him this total badass with his move set or skins etc, I would get that right away.

But knowing his sexuality makes you want to play the game?

I do get why you arent playing tho ;)

You are certainly not wrong but probably in the minority here this place is unfortunately slowly turning in to anti ERA lately.

An "anti-Era"? So a place with dissenting opinions that can be discussed openly without fear of bans, doxxing, or other? Sounds like a good deal. Anyways, there are designated threads where you can talk about issues in GAF that doesn't need to be derailing in threads like this.

Pretty much this. It is clear as day that it was done to try to garner some thinly veiled good will after the continued fuck-ups by Activision-Blizzard. However, does it ultimately matter? No. This will more than likely be forgotten over the next month, but you can't blame Gamers for giving an exasperated sigh at the mediocre handling of events here. I help organize the local universities "Gaymer" events and even the majority of them are pissed at Blizzard over this. It is a token character, not a genuine development.

I had passive interest in Overwatch due to some of the character designs, I liked the look of Soldier 76 from the start. He just seemed like a typical stoic all-American hero, kinda like Captain America but older and way less goofy. Initially if you look at previous posts about Soldier 76 I was shit posting but I am 100% supportive of Blizzard's decision because it is not what I wanted for the character but it gives you that closer connection.

I feel like I should actually support the game now and play it, however my brother plays it and some of my friends play it so I know that Blizzard refuses to acknowledge the problems with the game and deflects the criticism with stunts like this for mass approval. I know this game is broken as fuck which is why I don't wanna jump in. (Also I am BIG on cosmetics so I would be sucked in wanting to unlock every costume I like and that is a massive time sink I don't wanna commit to.)

Either way I'm buying that Soldier 76 nendo now. Other characters I liked the look of are D.VA, the Hamster (Probably the most creative thing Blizzard has done with this game) Pharah & Genji.

Is that why neogaf is becoming anti ERA? Becuase left ideas are not being "respected" enough as much as right ideas are respecrted over there?

Respect is earned, not given. A lot of people who enjoy the "level of discourse" on reset-era find this place inhospitable because they are confronted with people who disagree with them and push them to defend their position, rather than said position being correct by assumption and the discussion simply being a run-on of people trying to one up one another with their outrage.

I don't think Jare was one of those people though. I think they just got overwhelmed at repeating themselves over and over. For the record, I agreed with them and expressed similar ideas in this topic. I'm just not interested in running the hamster wheel with the people he was arguing with so I didn't continue posting about it.

Suprises me that this is viewed as pandering. It's just a comic that was released, that's all. Is there any press release confirming Soldier 76 is gay or any in-game announcement when you log in to play? Not that I'm aware. Whilst it isn't overly important to me, as a "Straight white male" that I am, if it makes other people happy they are getting some form of representation that I'm down with that.

You don't really need one when social media and games journalists put it on blast all over the internet. Finding out is practically unavoidable if youre invested in following gaming at all.

I'm pretty sure Blizz knew this too.

It isn't just the "straight white males" that are annoyed. Multiple groups within the LGBT community are pissed at what seems to be an off-handed token to assuage the current troubles people have with Blizzard.

Does making the assertion that non heterosexuals are mentally ill despite all relevant sciences coming to the opposite conclusion count as a personal attack since there can be such people reading here? That's basically telling them they're sick and if only they could accept that then they could sign up for treatment of the cause or the symptoms, or maybe they can at least abstain to avoid the worst of it but hey we're okay if they wanna remain ill and we can't go forcing adults to take their medicine even if we believe they totally should because hey, it is an illness according to random gaffer #92452, or something.

No. That is a step too close to Resetera.
A personal attack is a direct attack using their name. What you’re suggesting my friend is a slippery slope that leads nowhere good.

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Isn't Overwatch that game were people shoot at each other and there's 0 story? When do the characters find time to have sex? Did I miss the whole part about characters being something other than visual designs? Am I confusing it with a different game?

Overwatch has a story, but you actually have to research it to know anything about it. Most people who play OW, don't give a damn about the story. I don't even know the point of adding gay and lesbian characters to OW is, cause most people who play the game don't even care about or know anything about the story. At least Last of us has a story.
