Summary

  1. Reddit rumors are that Sony wanted to put 32 gb of memory in but it wasn't financially possible.
  2. They are probably targeting 16 gb with 8 gb reserved for the OS
  3. Sam almost guarantees SSD in Anaconda
  4. PSVR included in for 500?

Yeeah no. Sony will not force vr with every ps5 unless they've lost their damnef minds again.

8 gigs ram for the OS?! Complete BS!

Oh, no summary, eh?

Also I don’t believe the anaconda should have a SSD drive. SSD are still currently too expensive for the amount of memory and with increasing patch sizes and texture/resolution memory storage I just want more memory (2-4TB should be the default base memory for next gen imo.)

If it’s a hybrid drive with a small amount of SSD memory is specifically allocated to the OS, then I’m fine with that though.

If they don't have ssds then that will become a large bottleneck for next gen. That is if you want more ram. That memory has to be fed and if its through a slow ass hdd be prepared for loading times lol.

Don't think they have another choice outside a regular slow ass HDD if they want to keep it sub 500 dollars.

$500 should be the new standard.

It will be so great to have ssd as standard in every unit that developers can count on being there.

They COULD put full size 3.5 inch drives in I suppose ; it's at least better than another shitty laptop hdd for the 3rd gen in a row.

I can't find the actual PS5 post on Reddit that Brad is referring too but most of it sounds like BS...

16GB of GDDR6 sounds believable...but using 8 of that for the OS sounds ridiculous. Also I think forcing PSVR2 as part of the console package would be as bad as forcing Kinect onto Xbox One users intially as he says...

Brad was skeptical of the memory, too. He threw out that unless they are reserving it for streaming or some other reason we don't know about yet.

The 8GB/8GB RAM split sounds eerily similar to what the Hellpoint dev was telling Gamingbolt.

Next-gen specs silly season is underway I think.....

People need to stop giving much credibility to Gamingbolt. They have been doing this for years and it's like clockwork....they interview some random indie dev(who likely has no insider info) and ask a bunch of broad questions about hardware which then the indie dev speculates on what they think/what they would like to see...and then Gamingbolt tries to turn into some sort of news.

The reality is 8GB/8GB split doesn't sound believable. Xbox One X has a 9GB/3GB ram split...with 9 being for games and 3 for OS. I'd be highly skeptical that A) PS5 would need that much memory for the OS but more importantly B) that Sony would be planning to only have 8GB available for games for it's next gen console. Yes it's GDDR6 but still....seems to conservative.

I'd honestly be fine with even 599 to be honest. As long as they provide that SSD and the rest of the components are decent. I honestly don't think they need to be that scared of going there anymore, this isn't 2005. If you make an attractive, modern proposition for that price, people will buy it.

I don't understand this guy. How is he so ignorant that he doesn't know that PlayStation Now is Sony's cloud based game streaming service? It's hard to take him seriously.

The leak I saw on reddit said the same thing. It was deleted almost instantly though. Considering there was 5,5GB for the OS in the beginning of this gen... I see this as a possibility yes.

ehh...I think still think $599 is a bit too much for a gaming console. The hardcore fans/early adopters would buy it but average consumer might not....and they are the main target for gaming consoles.

I think $500 is the max.

Lol sorry. Anyway, 3,5GB in 2013... for a crappy OS. 8GB in 2020 for a PS5 doesn't seem that far off.

It's actually a pretty decent OS for a console. It's efficient, has everything where you need it and installs games super fast.

And they always overcompensate for the OS in case they decide to add features in the future. They don't utilize that full amount and when they realize they don't need that much anymore they usually free up more for developers over time.

It's not going to be 8GB in 2020. The OS may not change too much drastically other than the interface.

You might be right about GamingBolt, but the real issue for me is the technical director of a game dev (being independent is irrelevant) being quoted stating very surprising things (e.g believes PS4's shared RAM is a bottleneck).

AFAIK, he hasn't taken to Twitter or the like to say GamingBolt have misquoted him?

I just hope we don't have to wait too long now for the legit insiders/game sites to spill real specs/info about next-gen. Seems like all the old insiders have either stopped posting stuff or completely disappeared which is a shame.

I mean guess it's possible they need 8GB for OS for PS5. Stuff like streaming to twitch/youtube in 4K 60fps would probably require a bit of memory.

If it is the case then the total will be more than 16GB. It would at least be 20GB. I just don't see PS5 only having 8GB reserved for games...

I agree. I think the next Xbox and PlayStation will have more than 8GB of GDDR6 dedicated to games. I assume around 11-12GB. I don't see the OS of either console changing significantly in terms of RAM utilization.

I'm not sure...

32GB RAM? Hell no.
16GB RAM? That is the most probably.
SDD? No... unless there is a premium version at $500-600
VR? I can see it bundled but the main option will be to buy the console only at $399.

He has it backwards...it was 5.5GB for games.
5 actually. For both Xbox one and ps4.

Sony worded it like there was 4.5gb for games with an extra 500 megs being "flexible", but in reality that too is readily available for developers.

Ps4 pro has 5.5gb-6gb (again, with the "flexible" 500megs for games so its really 6) since it has an extra gig of ddr3 (4?) For OS tasks.

X1X has 9gbs for games.

I can't get over the YouTuber's face, throughout the whole thing. Did Jerri Blank from Strangers With Candy have a son?

Wait are people expecting 32GBs of RAM in next Gen consoles? I know the jump was 512MBs from last gen to 8GBs this gen (which is huge) but even back in 2013, MANY PCs were running with 8GBs of RAM, so it made sense to make that kind of jump. 32GBs of anything GDDR5 or better would be insanely expensive and 32GBs of anything less than GDDR5 would cause bottle necks because of there smaller bandwidth.

As for the 8GBs used of the 16GBs, I can actually see that starting out. This gen, 3.5GBs of RAM is used for the OS. While I don't think it would need 8GBs for the OS (even if they wanted the console to due direct streaming, 4-5GBs would be more than enough to pull that off), I can see them doing that. Of course this is all with a grain of salt.

I don't know if you read the Pacther thread and Matt's hints (one insider I trust) tkscz but the one thing he didn't hint about was RAM and 32GB was definitely not happening according to him during an exchange with a couple of posters.

Saying that, that was over 18 months ago now and more recently there has been talk of a PS5 delay from late 2019 to 2020 so some specs could change but I doubt it.

8GB for the OS. On a console. I know they are aiming to be this media center thing and all but it sounds to me like they're going with even more bloat... Are they using Gnome as desktop environment? Lol.
My guess is that they reserved this for streaming and recording capabilities in 4K. Do we know what kind of file system Sony are using nowadays? If the OS is still (Free)BSD based it could be ZFS? I've heard that ZFS can use lots of RAM for meta-data keeping (B-Trees and all) and background scrubbing etc.

32GB just wasn't going to happen. 16GB is much more feasible. But 8Gb reserved for the OS? :/

I'm not a expert on things like this but it sounds like a bloated OS. All of this sounds crazy even for a rumor.

Such a shame RAM has gotten so expensive. This will cripple nextgen. Anyway I don't see a console with just 16GB. Unless it's 16 only for games and another separate pool of a cheaper, slower RAM.

I think a $500 PS5 is doable if they want a more gradual shift since they still have so many heavy hitter for the ps4. I dont' think Sony wants to abandon the ps4 that quickly and having it priced high they can slowly phase out the ps5 by reducing the price over time while making use of the ps4 population at the same time. It would in pretty much give the PS4 3 to 4 more years. That does get me thinking what if Sony releases the PS5 this year in November of this year that would have given the PS4 Pro 3 years just like the pro gave the ps4 4 years and at that $500 price it would seem more like a next gen console instead of a slight upgrade like the pro was(pretty much what Microsoft did). It would also explain why Sony has been extremely quiet this year ( I still think it's coming out in 2020),

8GB reserved for the OS is absurd and kind of blows away any credibility this article has.

I'm personally hoping to see a 16GB pool of GDDR6 for games, and a 4GB DDR3/4 pool set aside for the OS. I think that hits the sweet spot of a generational upgrade while still being reasonable to implement.

Because PSNow is a crap Cloud service? Outside of games Sony lacks scale in infrastructure against Google Amazon and Microsoft.

Link to actual PS5 rumor that he is talking about

That's the worst 'leak' I've seen so far, if it turns out to be true I'll be realllyyyyyyy disappointed. Only 16GB of RAM = that will be a challenge to devs within 2 years. Touchscreen on the controller = unnecessary. Bundled VR = VR is cool and all but if the console is gimped thanks to it... screw this.

Sony can scale with the help of Google, Amazon, and MS as does everyone else and this has made it possible for those three to build out their infrastructure this much :). Ask PSNow for many is a more than just decent service and has deservedly gotten a nice majority piece of the revenue pie :).
