Jason Reitman To Direct “Ghostbusters 3”

GB2 has its flaws but it's still a perfectly acceptable sequel, I've never understood people that say it's a bad movie.

It's not terrible, but it's still pretty weak. I HATE the insanely stupid retcon at the start that resets all the progress of the first movie (and the story beats rehash the first film even more than the reboot did, just watch the Honest Trailers of it if you don't believe me), it's so stupid it almost feels like the movie assumes we're stupid enough to buy it (like it could have been forgiven if at least one character pointed out how stupid New York is for believing four guys with barely any money managed to cause an earthquake, create a centralized lightning storm, create convincing holograms of ghosts all through the city, make an animatronic zombie taxi driver, and of course create a skyscraper-tall Stay Puft robot).

But maybe they did think the audience was that dumb given they aimed GB2 more for kids, let's tone down the language, lighten up the jokes, make everyone act more cartoon-y in their performances, and throw a baby into it so the characters can goof around with a baby, totally what I wanted a Ghostbusters sequel to focus on (might have been more forgiving if it was Peter and Dana's baby, but nope they broke up just to have them do their romance progress AGAIN and the baby's dad is some off-screen rando. Err, yay?) It's just unoriginal and doesn't do anything with these characters that wasn't far better in the first movie. Heck, they don't even understand making the audience laugh since they have Janine date Louis because the filmmakers said she didn't have chemistry with Egon in 1 even though THAT WAS WHAT WAS FUNNY ABOUT IT!

Go watch the Ghostbusters cartoon if you want a more original continuation of the first movie.

The Ghostbusters reboot is average. It's amusing at times, falls flat at times, but since it doesn't involve any characters from the original movie it's nothing to get that upset about. Ghostbusters 2 doesn't get that excuse.

Frank Spencer: I felt this way about GB2 since I saw it in high school like 15 years ago. I also had some issues with Burton's Batman films before Batman Begins was announced (since that's another popular "oh, you all only hate on the good older films when the new ones came out!" excuse because heaven forbid someone else feel differently about a film). I also rank the Indiana Jones films as 1 > 3 > 4 >2. I'm sorry, not every "classic" film in a series is as beloved by everyone, don't try to claim it's only because we're trying to make newer films look better.

Honestly I remember a ton from the second movie and have never understood why it's hated, always felt like a hipstery argument - nothing beats the original. Yeah ok whatever, I always had fun watching the second movie. Soundtrack was great, the slime was interesting and looked pretty cool I thought, Vigo was (in my mind) a very iconic villain that I think is a FAR better designed than the ridiculous 80's synthwave God from the first movie, they were seriously fighting an ice skater at the end. Vigo is better and the little twerp who works at the museum is hilarious. Riding the Statue of Liberty was a nice fuck yeah moment. I love it, fuck the haters.

Also Annie Pots was much better looking in the second movie.

very good point! I knew "I collect spores, molds, and fungus" was a killer bad pickup line, even as a kid.

count me in as not being huge on GB2. i saw it in the theater when it came out, and by the time they were making He-Man references, I got this distinct "we are going through the motions" feeling, even as an 8 year old. the movie was still fine but it felt like the corners were a bit rounded off. if i never again have to sit through a scene of the Ghostbusters entertaining a baby, it'll be fine with me =)

What reboot?

"also can we stop with that shit that the reboot is better than GB2, which itself is still so much better than most of todays action comedies."

I actually always enjoyed GB2. It wasn’t until I got older and surfed the web before I realized people hated. I mean, I was a kid, but I liked it, and I still watch it

I´d rather play Ghostbusters: The Video game one more time. That´s the real proper third movie.
It wasn't perfect (it rehashed too many things from the movies and Murray was phoning it in, perhaps literally), but there were moments where it felt like Ghostbusters - it WAS Ghostbusters. I don't know that I'd sell the game as a "real proper third movie", but it's an authentic Ghostbusters experience when almost nothing else is.

I hope Ghostbusters 3 happens. They should just copy Extreme Ghostbusters cartoon and have one of the old team train a new team:

Ray could do what Egon did in the series. Peter and Winston could also appear.

I read it will be a team of 4 teens, 2 male and 2 female.
Which should have it been from the beginning.

Need to see a trailer but the fact that it is the same universe and a different director makes me optimistic. Maybe he has something from his father in his blood regarding movies XD

Fairly woke cast for 1997 - latino Bill Murray, goth chick, black dude, disabled guy

They should have really made the previous reboot movie in universe. I think a lot of the pushback would have been alleviated if they had at least attempted to connect the dots.

Yeah I didn’t understand why they couldn’t have made them daughters of the original busters. I appreciate universe continuity. It could have worked.

In an interview it was mentioned that they wanted to avoid the logistics of having to explain why people have forgotten about all the ghosts and the Ghostbusters.

I guess they didn't see Ghostbusters 2.

Because if they did it they could have not have such awful cameos in which each one of them is an asshole and even dies. And this would have not gone well with his plan to completley destroy this iconic franchise

i don't think it would have helped with the bad humor, lame villain, weak pacing, etc.

the original Ghostbusters already all have cameos in the movie and it's groan-inducing. i don't think knowing Jillian is Egon's daughter would have made the movie any better at all.

Paul Feig always struck me as a guy who maybe thinks he’s a little too clever for his own good. He’s made a couple funny movies, I’ll give him that, but his smugness leading up to GB 2016’s release seemed to expose him a little

I would assume had they gone straight up sequel/daughters route it would have been a different movie. At least potentially, I’m giving them benefit of the doubt

I think they could replace Egon to some extent with Ray, say with Egon having trained Ray/"accidentally" lobotomized him and made him smarter and also more eccentric to match modern Aykryod.

I think Murray would be terrible, though. Murray was bored as fuck in the video game, and I think RLM got it right that he refused to do his scene in 2016 unless he could be seated.

I politely disagree. Murray needs to have a cameo in these movies. If the script is fine, I’m sure he’d put more energy into a cameo appearance.

They could have the team find him in as a resident in a mental instituition and the team is trying to get help from him but he is too far gone. (The audience would assume its due to all the ghost encounters taking a toll on Bill’s psyche. Then Dan Akryod would have the line: “ he just hasn’t been the same since the divorce.”

As our team walks away from Bill Murray’s bed, Bill begins to burst out in song and in the background you see all these doctors and nurses rushing over to him trying to sedate him.

Or have Bill now be a crazy hermit in the woods.

Or something....

Bill needs to have a cameo, at least...

Bill kind of seemed checked out of the whole thing tbh. his GB2 character was a similar tv talk show skeptic. even the cameos in the reboot were reboots!

they need to come up w a new story. the ghosts need a ROOT, a hook, a source. GB1 was rooted in the building, that crazy iconic skyscraper, the futuristic art deco-ness of it all, the gargoyle dogs, the rooftop occult ceremonies, all of which historically accurate for that time and place, all of it adding to the weirdness. the building was a channel, it was tied to Zuul. GB2 had the painting, the ghost was residing within the painting. these ghost stories are authentic to modern folklore. ghosts & poltergeists being tied to locations & objects are very much a thing.

IMO the root of GB goes back to Spiritualism. the American Spiritualist movement was a homegrown, non-denominational, widespread, sort of meme, the popularization of supernatural or "spiritual" phenomenon in the 19th century. seances and tarot guards were popular, ghost and fairy sightings, little girls who could produce poltergeists to astonished paying onlookers. Spiritualism was a huge, and we still live with many of the cultural signifiers it introduced. until-now-unattainable religious texts from the East were finally being translated to English and reproduced en mass, to meet popular demand, this is all stuff Ray would tell you in his occult shop.

it makes me think Dan Akroyd had much more to do with writing those elements of the films. as movies about Spiritualist revivalists in the era of the high capitalist 80s, his historical & folklore input likely lent a realism & a weight to the films, the first one especially, that is entirely lacking in the reboot.

they need to make the scary parts scary. don't set the mood for scary and leave in offhand improvised jokes from Gabe from The Office, it instantly takes me out of the movie, right at the start of it. they messed up the start of TLJ with humor as well. do directors not understand building up to a reveal? nothing can be taken seriously anymore, we constantly have to be standing off to the side, nudging others, saying we don't really believe in this dumb ghost shit?

they need a real villain. toxic masculinity is not going to cut it, the Ghostbusters logo itself is not going to cut it. do some research. look for a famous haunted house. look into some occult thing, find some old Babylonian demon and write some lore around that. make it less of an SNL skit, make the movie matter, something that feels real. maybe it's in another part of America, maybe the Ghostbusters go camping or rock climbing? maybe they are underwater or on the moon? or in Hell & the afterlife, as long suggested? worked for Bill & Ted.

they can make anything they want, they have tens of millions of dollars at their disposal, instead we got Melissa McCarthy shooting at trash cans in an alleyway in broad daylight. they need to use their imagination.

Teaser looks really good.

Please for the love of god keep the originals dry humor, and not the marvel happy go lucky jokes, same as fembusters had.

Cautiously optimistic about this! I always felt that Ghostbusters could have been a huge franchise if they did it right. The 2016 reboot was not right. Hopefully this one is better.

Totally agree with this. I never want to hear a wonton soup joke ever again.

Holy shit that teaser. :messenger_open_mouth:

As much as I love GB2 they lightened the tone due to the success of the cartoon. I hope GB3 is more comedy horror rather than simply comedy like the first with a similar score to boot. Elmer Bernstein's score from the first is one of the best ever. :messenger_musical:

They could have Egon literally living in the containment unit post death carrying out experiments with Slimer perhaps? :messenger_ghost:

I read it will be a team of 4 teens, 2 male and 2 female.

Oscar would be 30 odd now so having teenagers wouldn't work. But perhaps he would stay away from anything supernatural after the events of the second movie and his mother Dana would definitely approve of that!

All I really ask for is for this gentleman to be the fourth Buster, in Ramis' place.

Dr._Janosz_Poha.jpg

Well Louis Tully was in a way the 5th Ghostbuster in the second movie. Perhaps he and Janosz and working together trying to catch ghosts still badly all these years later. Hence that rusting Ecto 1 (not the sequels Ecto 1A) in the shed in that teaser posted above. It's funny that those two never were on screen together in the sequel. They could be a fun team up.

Sucks they didn't do part 3 sooner, but better late than never. I'll be seeing it.

Yeh it was supposed to be happen in 1999 but Sony opted to make Wild Wild West instead if rumors are to be believed. Even the Will Smith song lyric for the movie appears to acknowledge this. Yep even Sony was shit at doing things back then folks.

Aykroyd was 100% the root of the Spiritualist stuff in the film, most of it came from his father Peter's research. Originally it had a lot more to do with parapsychology and spiritualism, but when they started rewriting the script based around Murray's improvising, a lot of the deeper elements were replaced or outright abandoned, mainly due to budget and the fact that a lot of what Aykroyd had envisioned just wasn't affordable.

There's a little more info on the original script.

Scopa

The Tribe Has Spoken
There just aren't the comedic legends to help bring this thing together. Ok Neal Brennan could probably make a good Egon, Dave Chappelle for Winston after them I can't think of anybody.
Bill Burr is made for this.

If they had gone the route of the Ghostbusters brand becoming a business franchise in the universe they could done anything really. My idea is you have some guy with a failing GB franchise who decides to hire all women as a marketing stunt. He'd expect to hire a bunch of sexy blondes to drive business but gets stuck with a bunch of intelligent science chicks who end up being awful spokespeople. The original cast would basically be the head office who end up getting involved when the new crew stumbles on something huge.

did not know about this! fascinating stuff.

hey did yall know President Trump, Superman, and the Ramones are all in the music video for Bobby Brown's "On Our Own", from the GB2 soundtrack. this video is really playing up the NYC aspect of the film (which was a huge part of it, that walking Statue of Liberty was a big deal)

I should have worded my post differently, anyway. The key for me would have been continuity, they didn’t have to be daughters, just put this cast in the same old GB universe and fill in around them, work from there.

So yeah, your idea definitely could have worked.

It seemed pointless to do a reboot that basically copies the intro, copies most of the premise, just changes the bad guy and some lazy filler in the third act.

Like you said, there are routes they could have gone with GB3

The Ghostbusters reboot is average. It's amusing at times, falls flat at times, but since it doesn't involve any characters from the original movie it's nothing to get that upset about. Ghostbusters 2 doesn't get that excuse.

Oh yeah, I hate that Ghostbusters 2 implies the Ghostbusters spent the 5 years since the first film not busting ghosts, it's the worst thing about the movie, Ghostbusters was one of those franchises like Indiana Jones where as a kid you liked to imagine your own adventures for them, 2 making the time between the two movies a dead zone is really lame.

Plus it is just so lazy how it follows the exact same story beats as the first movie, even as I kid I noticed that, I wish they could have come up with some way to structure the story that involved them still being Ghostbusters at the start

However what saves the movie is 3 things, it's still funny, there's a lot of great jokes, even the scenes showing what the Ghostbusters are up to in their separate lives are funny, which takes some of the sting out of it.

And the Ghostbusters are still recognizably themselves, it's just great to be able to spend more time with the characters, especially now considering it'll never be the original 4 together ever again, that really makes the movies flaws all the more forgivable.

And finally it had a great villain, I think that's what really saves the movie's story is for all the similarities to the first film the villain is very different than Gozer.

Fairly woke cast for 1997 - latino Bill Murray, goth chick, black dude, disabled guy

Political correctness was very much a thing in the 90s, it just wasn't taken to such absurd degrees like now.

At any rate a goth girl Ghostbuster is a great idea.

I thought it was fake but this says that its real:

That's a great idea and this time instead of NYC it could have been the Chicago branch of Ghostbusters, which have made sense given it was the cast and director of Bridesmaids.

I still have no clue why that wasn't the direction they took, it would have made so much more sense, but oh well, it doesn't matter anymore now that we're getting a proper third movie.

did not know about this! fascinating stuff.

Well I guess we're. gonna. have. to. take control!

Ghostbusters 3 already happened.

The video game was awesome, my only worry about 3 is that it might render the game non-canon, I hope it actually includes a reference to it (like a throaway line about "our second encounter with Gozer") or at least doesn't feature anything that directly contradicts the game.

Jason Reitman is the one true heir to the throne. I'm sure that's what the studio was thinking.

As for me? Two Ghostbusters have moved on; one physically and the other metaphorically. There's no reason to continue that which has ended. Let the people sings songs and praises of the series' past.

You can always just disregard whatever this new movie does and continue enjoying the Prime (movie) continuity via the IDW comics. It's fun. The latest story was a massive GB franchise crossover. As for Kunonabi's and your idea for the Chicago branch that's kinda been done in the comics. You can see 2 of the 3 female Ghost Smashers are now working with the Rookie. That's them in blue right behind the fembusters. The third female Ghost Smasher is Jenny Moran, the blue ghost there based on Dan Aykroyd's wife and she's working with the Prime Busters in New York.

RCO024.jpg

Every fan should at the very least read "Get Real" which was the first inter GB crossover event. It's between Prime Busters and the RGB.

Ghostbusters 3 should have been made in 1993. Maybe around when Groundhog day came out. When i saw Ghostbuster 2016, i immediately thought of how i would have re-written the movie. I would have had Erin Gilbert be Erin Venkman. And her father is possessed and turns into an evil ghost buster who they have to track down. It would end in a protonpack lightsaber style fight with ghosts flying all around.

Ghostbusters 2 had some funny scenes, but overall it felt like The Last Jedi of the series.

Nah.

Ghostbusters 2 was like...a good expansion pack. Weak compared to the base game but enjoyable for those who just want more of what they already got.

Why? They can make this the sequel that Ghostbusters 2 actually deserved and pretend that the reboot never happened. Also, less chance of the reboot getting a sequel if this happens.

The game they released a few years ago does an excellent job of being the Ghostbusters sequel I wanted and had all of the original cast :).
