RUMOR: Resident Evil 8 will be Third-Person, might bring back Hook Man, still early in development

Now that Resident Evil 2 is finally out, it is time to talk about the next entry in the series and now rumors are slowly starting to buzz regarding what is currently planned for the next game.
While Resident Evil 2 was creepy and tense with its Tyrant Mr. X that kept chasing you, this is something that might return with Resident Evil 8 as well.

Evil VR is a twitter account created by someone with access to sources inside Capcom. It was started last year but didn’t really tweet much information until recently.
Evil VR also tweeted about Resident Evil 2 getting a demo in January and shared some information on why there was no alternative old school camera available in the game at launch.

Since every rumor has to be taken with a grain of salt, keep this in mind for this one as well.
This can be true or it can be likely fake. Even if this is true, the game sounds like it is still in early stage of development so things can change a lot from the concept to reality.

  • Resident Evil 8 “will take place on a recently-abandoned island where the secret laboratory is located.”
  • The story so far is to “uncover the truth behind the creation of Eveline and more of similar bio-weapons.”
  • “Some concepts from 3.5 (hook-man) will be borrowed for 8.”
  • “Hallucinations will play a big part, getting players confused on what’s real or not.”
  • Capcom is debating on whether they want to make this a mainline game or spin-off.
  • After the praise received by Resident Evil 2, they will go with a third-person camera view.
  • Development on Resident Evil 8 started last year by a small team.
  • Capcom is also discussing Resident Evil 3 Remake internally.
  • Resident Evil 8 will be released only after Resident Evil 3 Remake is out.
  • Capcom has no interest in remaking Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6.

They clearly have established some really positive momentum. I thoroughly enjoyed RE7 and RE2R

I am a bigger fan of thirs person RE than first person RE; though

I call bullshit on everything but RE3Remake
Also I heard this rumour already, they're not sure if the new title is RE8
Hopefully if any of it true it's not and Capcom not remaking 4-6 is a sign that the new title is a sequal to 3

Yup, considering how fast they are outputting RE games.
7 probably paved the way with RE2 strengthening their beliefs as RE3 is already a thing I believe, RE4 has been remade/releases/re-released so many times already.
But hey if this route keeps them floating and gives chance to other possibilities in the future then by all means do what pays the bills.

This whole Capcpom thing is old already. They made re2make, they are releasing dmc5 soon, they brought an Onimusha remaster. If you want 90s Capcom that almost went under with the saturation (but quality games) they released for arcades and new console games, you have to leave this dream behind. It is over

Stop thinking Capcom will bring 10 console arcadey games a year, which 80% would be wet sequel dreams. It is gone. They are now a different company and in a better shape then in the crazy Inafune expansion failure years (2005-2010). And no, Rockman Legends 3 will not be a thing, and if MM11 bombed, you have no right to ask them for another.

Banco at least has lincensed animes to guarantee funds. Capcom has only their mobile and console games of their own franchises. Not even external contracts like Square Enix.

If a AAA budget game fails, they are in the red. So, tread with caution when asking for a new Darkstalker, or new Rival Schools

So my plan has been to wait for PC VR support to be unlocked before I tackle RE7. Is that just not going to happen? Should I just play it?

Probably wouldnt work out good but would be cool if they somehow got RE8 to work in 3rd and 1st person. They're just so good at both that i have a hard time deciding whats better. (maybe beat it in 3rd than go back in 1st)

It kinda rubs me the wrong way though that they supposedly needed to hear people's praise in order to realize how much better 3rd person camera fits in Resident Evil.
It's probably just PR talk though,i think they would have still went 3rd person for RE8 even if RE2 wasn't so highly praised.

Ohh boi, it's going to take a hot minute before we see any RE out, I mean we talking about RE3 in blue print phase atm...and RE8 after the remake..wake me up at next gen.

I personally think they went with first person with RE7 because of popularity of PT and bunch of reaction videos from YouTubers. I'm just glad we going back to third person, I personally far more immersed in third person.

There are tons of first person horror games out there.

Edit:sorry double post

There are tons of third person shooters 8/

RE7 was special because for a first person game it retained the same classic RE gameplay of item searching/puzzle solving while still offering first person shooting controls that never felt like your typical action shooter. RE6 may have been third person but it felt more like call of duty than RE7 did.

The VR was also impressive. RE7 still remains as one of the best VR games to play. I found it scarier than the RE2 remake because I couldn't see around my character, and the first person view places you in the setting.

It's a rumor so it may not even pan out. We'll just have to see.

Resident Evil started as an action horror game not as a shooter and third person camera was part of its DNA.RE should be balanced between action and survival horror and RE4-6 as well as 7 broke that balance. The former were too much action while RE7 was too much horror. The first Remake and this one captured perfectly the essence of the series which is the balance between action and horror so i want RE8 to continue down this path.

As i said there are tons of first person horror games out there that make you feel helpless for those of you who enjoy them no need to turn RE into another Outlast/Amnesia clone.

We don't get much third person survival horror games but we get crazy amount of first person horror games.

Silent Hill? Haunting Ground? Clock Tower? Alone in the Dark? Dead Space? There's plenty of horror games in the third person as well.

There is no survival horror games anymore other then the Evil Within and even that doesn't touch RE2 Remake, RE Remake feels as fresh as it did 21 years ago.
RE7 was what I always said it was, a VR project with the RE name slapped on it.
The house is great if not small on scale compared to other RE game, everything after went down hill and become Call of Duty as I became John Wick and it evidently rushed and bolted on(probley when the team switched join development on a RE2) , the Story didn't even make sense and only has Chris as DLC and A picture of helicopter with an Umbrella sign to tie it Resident Evil
The scares was so terrible in it to the point I laughed.
The game is so obviously a side project gone into full production due to reception of the Demo and the RE brand tied to it.
It's a great VR experience but it's just that.
Outside VR it just another mediocre first person jump scare that has a decent budget

Did you really just use those games

Both Dead Space and Silent hill is dead and Evil Within didn't sold so well. Ever since games like Amnesia and P.T got popular we saw stupid amount of first person Horror everywhere. So I personally very glad to see RE goes back to third person.

Can't wait for RE3 remade... RE7 had hidden hallucinations in the form of
child Eveline
and I thought that was OK, but could've been explored a little better.

I bet if you took every first person and third person horror game released over the last 5 years it'd be like a 90/10 split.

Give me third person.

Thanks for adding on the list with The Evil Within. Sales are irrelevant in this discussion. The point is there's plenty of horror games that use both first and third person perspectives. Hell, The Evil Within 2 recently did an update to include a first person setting which makes second playthroughs more interesting.

RE7 wasn't an outlast or a PT clone, and anyone that played it could tell you that. The first person view was just a perspective. The setting, puzzles, game play and enemies felt very rooted in Resident Evil with some new thematic additions for flavor.

RE2 made sense going back to a third person setting for its remake and RE3 would as well. But for RE8 which is continuing off in the experimental direction RE7 took I'd prefer they stay in first person and surprise us with something new.

The problem I think is some of you are lumping RE7 with your generic first person Steam greenlight junk. The production value and quality goes above and beyond most horror games in the first person. It's not like those Amnesia rip offs.

I also want to venture a guess as to how many played this in VR.

The Evil Within is the list, there are no fuckin more now
Resident Evil is the last AAA series the rest have been dead for over a decade

RE2 made sense going back to a third person setting for its remake and RE3 would as well.
They said after making REmake HD that it was eye opening and they was confident in remaking RE2, this was when mini RE7 project was in the works by the team that later join the RE2 Remake team because they finally found the right direction for the series by making RE2
But for RE8 which is continuing off in the experimental direction RE7 took I'd prefer they stay in first person and surprise us with something new.
No its not, this rumour says it doesnt and every other piece of information indicates the series is following RE2 Remake with RE3 first followed by New entry.
If you want something new play a new IP.
There's plenty apparently.

Such as....?
Dude I have 11(more not installed) installed on my PS4 with RE2 and Evil Within sat on there own in the corner

RE7 was actually light on the puzzle side. I remember the birthday cake & that's about it. It also had the weakest bestiary IMO. I did appreciate the methodical aspect of the level design with finding keys & unlocking doors a welcome return to form, but the rest (including first person combat) wasn't so hot. I'm personally very happy with Capcom continuing on from RE2 Remake & using that game as their template moving forwards.
