Game is coming out Feb 1st for PC, Switch and Xbox One (PS4 soon)

Wargroove’s brain-teasing tactics and impressive level editor make it the Advance Wars successor fans have been waiting for.

https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/wargroove-review/ 78%
Brimming character and imagination, Wargroove occasionally loses its groove over long-winded core gameplay.

https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/wargroove-review-advanced-wars/1900-6417077/ 8/10
The Good:
Terrific level of strategy offers you numerous decisions without becoming overwhelming
Commanders and critical hits provide layers of depth when attacking and positioning units
Impressive suite of map and campaign creation tools
Strikes a balance between maintaining its classic look and including modern visual flourishes

The Bad:
Inability to easily see enemy team's attack range slows the action
Strengths/weaknesses chart is hard to read quickly
Some limitations in online play

Current metacritic: 86 with 16 reviews. Now still 86 with 23 reviews.

The Advance Wars games had Metacritic scores between 86 and 92. Days of Ruin, my favorite, had an 86. I'm excited. The map/campaign editor in particular might means this game might be relevant for years.

Never heard of this before, and after reading "AW with dogs" it is one of my most expected games from this year

It's a shame the human sprite artwork is so ugly looking with their clown noses.

Doesn't help they put out this artwork which makes the characters more appealing to look at.

Other than that minor gripe I'm sure the game will be good.

What I like most about strategy games like that are the puzzles. There are 25 here I hope they are good.

I haven't paid in advance for a game since Sunset Overdrive (I know, cool story bro) but I just prepurchased this earlier today.

Since I’m never getting another aw with dual strike style art I’ll blind buy this

Looks promising. This is good.

Interesting points:
- no levelling
- no mid-level saves
- hour long missions
- online multiplayer sounds amazing
- map editor looks great

I saw this in the Xbox store and thought it looked like shovelware garbage. Thanks for bringing it to my attention that it is a advance war successor with good reviews. Will buy tonight. #WHYIGAF

It’s not technically linked with Advance Wars, dev-wise or any other. Just so you know. Spiritual successor.

Not sure where else to put it but it's good to see that Chucklefish is listening to customer feedback:
Chucklefish Games: “Lots of post launch support!
Quality of life fixes coming soon, we’ve heard you all there. Free content updates are planned too.
Look for quicker skipping of battle cutscenes, an option for faster map movement locked on by default, online play with bots, some tweaks to fog of war, and some other bits and bobs.”
“There will be DLC :) can’t tell you quite what we’re planning yet!”

I had a great time with this game yesterday. Played two campaign levels, then went into multiplayer and set up a game vs. the AI on a big map with tons of buildings to just dive into the game.

I highly prefer it to Advance Wars, it's way more than a reskin/rehash, refining the formula for a genuinely better game.

I don't think that many human characters have "clown noses"? The vampire you play as in the first level has it, but she's a vampire lol...is it really that prevalent? I didn't notice.

I was disappointed that they caved to demands of censorship. Originally they had the dogs being able to die, but due to whining on twitter they changed it so they run away instead. Otherwise the game seems pretty dang fantastic. Not sure if I will buy it or wait for a LRG release.

You just sold me. Thanks for the thoughts

Fucking twitter lol. How can you possibly get upset about dogs dying in a game when you commit mass murder in pretty much every shooter out there.

I guess it's one thing for humans to be controlling human battles, but making another statement suggesting that we should drag other animals into our conflicts.

Still, most people probably bitched about this while eating a bacon egg and cheese

Animals have been used for War for many millenia. It isn't anything new and is a practice that is still ongoing today.

Do these people have the same problem with using horses in medieval games, or war elephants? It's a completely retarded sentiment.

Appeal to tradition? People still don't want to confront the morality of this truth in a lighthearted game.

I found out about this by playing the game, as soon as I saw dogs run away instead of die, I knew it was because they didn't want to deal with this issue.

I don't really care either way, it doesn't bother me, I'm just commenting on how and why they did it.

Edit: Also, dogs are domestic animals many people keep as pets. Doggie death is a more sensitive issue than war elephant death lol. (Doggie? OH NO? Elephant? ooooo Ivory!)

Cartoon dog deaths now? NPCs gone full retard.

Anyway, I’m picking this up today or tomorrow. Very excited.

Game is good if you're into that Advance Wars kinda thing. I love how you can't save scum.

The changing of the doggo animation is understandable, but kinda dumb considering you're also murdering humans and humanoids in this game. I feel like priorities are a little misplaced.

I just bought it and played the first 2 minutes. Will report back after more time with it.

I ended caving in and bought it soon after that post. hahaha! Played for an hour or so. Think im still in the tutorial part and on level 5/6? cant recall. Granted im still being told by the game how to play, so far im enjoying it...wish tutorial was shorter tbh. Could have been condensed. No biggie.

Protip: if ya want to save yourself time, turn off fully the battle animations in the options menu (you can also change them to just show your own attacks, if you want a little bit of both worlds)

Also, i widh you could set a level for the hd rumble, i like the idea but ended up turning that off completely too

Cool. I just finished the
level where you have to help the villagers escape
I agree with everything you said so far. I’ll add that the story is very basic and lacklustre, even for an Advance Wars type game, but I am very early on, so there is hope for that. I’m enjoying it, it’s growing on me.

so just a question - i've only played as the red team and have played against green and blue so far. do all the teams have the same units but with a different skin?

hoping theres some variation between teams aside from Groove skills.

It sounds like I’m up to a similar point in the game as you. It does seem that way. Commanders have a unique ability each, but all other units are identical in function. It’s still early in the game, so this might not be the case. Or if it is, they might change it with a patch. They said they want feedback and are willing to make changes. New units is a pretty big change though.

Anyway, I’m still enjoying it so far.

The only difference being the commander and their power is a little meh. I liked how different commanders in Advance Wars change the nature of their units as well.

So far, I'm finding that pikemen seem to be the most bang for the buck. In groups of 2-4, they're very easy to set up a line of critical hit opportunities, and they're very cheap. Other units are hard to set up critical hits, because either the positioning is hard to get, or they're too vulnerable and die before I even get them into position.

Also, using the commander as bait to draw out enemy units seems to be working too. If there's a one health enemy unit near my commander, I usually just end turn without killing it. That way, on the enemy turn, it'll hit my commander for minimal damage, suicide itself, and give my commander more groove points.
