Is There Any Fanservice In Western Games For Straight Men Anymore?

I remember watching an interview for it where it was discussed and talked about. Like a behind the scenes type of discussion. Mind you that game came out in 2013 so it was a LONG time ago. It was way before the game was even released. So that scene was already taken out by the time it dropped.

There was never a "graphic rape scene" in Tomb Raider 2013. That's a complete fallacy. There was never any intent on having any rape scene in the game at all. There was an implication that one of the enemies wanted to assault Lara sexually, that's it. Do you really think that the games writer, Rhianna Pratchett, a woman who is a proud feminist would have wrote a rape scene into the game? Give me a break.

. You see a man throwing Lara on the ground and pulling her panties off.

This shit is COMPLETELY made up.

Video games is certainly a way to escape life for sure, but you do that through immersion and story. That's the point of them; to tell a story.

I think the main job of video games is to entertain, rather than tell a story. There are so many games I've enjoyed and havent really cared about the story at all.
Because sexy girls entertain me more than plain (or plain ugly) ones, I'd always prioritize their presence highly, in order to make the game more fun.

So my question to you is, does NOT having it in games make the game bad in any way or shape or form?

No, but that's not the point, if you're going to take something away just because you (developers, publishers, social pressuring groups) feel like it's the right/progressive/feminist friendly thing to do, then I'm going to complain in the opposite direction, it's really that simple, it has nothing to do with how much better or worse it is with or without it. That's the classic excuse "some things are OK to be censored becuase I agree" or "taking this away makes it better" that's not for you to decide, if it's going to be good or bad, let it be on it's own terms, not on your imposed moral changes.

I believe OP mentioned Spider-Man and how it's fan serviced to females because he's in briefs!!! Are you really serious? For one, it's an unlockable costume, two it takes some actual time to unlock... like it's not THAT deep or on the same level as female objectification where it's blatantly displayed. Lastly, with or without the costume is DOSE NOT AFFECT the game play or story what so ever. It literally adds NOTHING to the game nor does it take away from the game either.

Oh yah, just like those Fatal Frame V costumes; optional, locked content in an M rated game, guess what, removed from the American release, how about that.

...and the new TR devs are afraid to put Lara in her iconic shorts, they cant even include it as an unlockable from the 34 outfits.

In Shadow they included the classic polygonal Lara and couldn't help but throw a jab by putting in the description "more nostalgic than functional" alluding of course to the whole "this outfit is not realisti or pratcical, it's just titilation", even when they do, they still have to be condescending about it... but maybe that's reading too much into it.

The part that I consider fan service is Lara being thrown on the ground and fighting to keep her panties on.

That's still pretty messed up. Why would that be fan service? Still pretty sure it wasn't going to be that graphic, that was just media outrage as always, who knows if it was intentended to be rape at all.

yeah kind of amazed at that whole cycle. playing through the actual game, that moment is just an awkward struggle in a much larger setpiece that has nothing to do with sexualizing Lara. but isolated as a carefully chosen clip, it can be misrepresented to look like something else, and for a few months we had a witch hunt media screaming about something that wasn't even in the game.

tbh i think it scared the creators away from giving her ANY love interest or sex in the games. gaming journos didn't even give a crap about the violence until game 3, by which time they had entirely forgotten their own role in shooing away the icky sex stuff, which is why OTT violence is all that remains.

So shorts in the jungle is not realistic or functional but this is functional

Who are they trying to fool ? its the first time i see devs act out of spite against the fans who bought all the previous games, no wonder their game bombed.

I’m hoping it doesn’t take too much longer of devs games bombing to realize pandering to the sjw side isn’t what is best for their business. Create something new, but changes to existing games will continue to alienate. Watch how much worse doa6 does because of the changes

I thought you played games to have fun. But apparently you only play them for the story.

Does that mean games like CSGO, League of Legends, etc are not video games?

Because you can't play them for the story/main narrative since they don't have one.

Sure, but the devs were virtue signaling and actively tweeting against it. ;)

And I just don‘t get it. Nothing about that outfit screams omg oversexualized to me. It‘s a normal shirt and jungle shorts. Especially rendered on the new more realistic looking model, where it looks even tamer, compared to og Lara.

You don't understand, you can see her elbows and her knees. What man could resist? It just triggers their innate desire to rape.

I personally kind of find it interesting how the same groups of women that are yelling for sex positivity (to justify their non-modest behavior) and harass anyone for slut-shaming, want any sort of female fanservice in media banned or censored.

Not trying to sound like an incel, but that is what I have noticed with these kinds of activists. A weird limbo of inconsistencies and double-standards.

How often is it the same people? I often see it being two separate groups that kind of live uncomfortably under the same umbrella. I see some publications that go back and forth but usually from different angles with different writers.

It does make me sad to see a comic poking fun at "free the nipple" has to censor the nipple...

Reminds me of the furor the movie "Baise moi" received in early 2000, about two women shooting men as revenge for rape. Film included an actual sex scene. Directors were women.

Banned in France,Canada, edited version in the UK. Strangely USA had no issues yet it was screened at very few cinemas. But there right wing groups and media caused the most stir.

I'd like to see a similar game combining sex and violence to such degree.

Same for the movie "Irreversible" a little later.

So not all reactions come from the same political affiliations in video games

I want sex out of my movies and games. If i want to see 2 people hump eachother i will go to pornhub.

No forced shitty sex encounters. Its awkward as hell if you play/watch with a friend or family around.

Also about people arguing that something "isn't realistic" its a freaking video game. If it was realistic the game would suck.

Of course game would have warnings about explicit sex scenes. No games with surprise factors in this day and age.

lmao, the absolute state of female characters in modern gaming, literally the most frumpy, unappealing costumes they could think of, one of which even covers her face, how long until they're just putting characters in burkas?

At least those are optional, but the fact that they even put them in the game at all and actually thought would want to play wearing them is astounding.

They could have easily given her the iconic outfit, and it would fit the jungle setting.

This is the most mild take possible on Lara's original outfit and it's still too much for these fucking weirdos to handle.

Words can not describe the pure contempt I have for the "crazy cat lady" style feminist we have now who hates everything sexual and thinks the whole fucking world revolves around them.

We've hit the bottom of the barrel I'm afraid. However, I'm pretty sure I saw the mayor's daughter wearing something that exposed her shoulders in the advert for the RE2 remake DLC. Take what we can get!

Their hypocrisy makes sense when you remember that the only thing that motivates them is spiting people they don't like.

I personally don't care about it but some guys want flesh and blood women to show a little modesty, but are fine with fictional women being scantily clad, so therefore feminists are all for irl slutty dressing and behavior but don't you dare design a video game woman to be anything but frumpy.

They just get off on making male nerds angry because they're bullies and they just don't like us.

Feminists despise anything men like. That's why they talk about the "male gaze".

They don't care about sexuality if it something they feel they control

I'm a fan of the original Lara, but this outfit just looks so bland on the reboot model. I think it's the lack of curves and exaggerated features. She just looks like an ordinary woman cosplaying. There's nothing "sexy" about it.

Particularly there's a part in the game where Lara has to sneak around and if caught she is potentially raped. You see a man throwing Lara on the ground and pulling her panties off.
Sounds like an episode of Law and Order SVU.

Idk, if you would consider that fan service, but I kinda do. In any case, the scene was removed due to back lash and uproar for rape and sexualization of a character.

Do you call it fanservice when it happens on Law and Order?

Actually her outfit in the main game is far more revealing than just exposed shoulders, the question here is if Capcom will have the balls to make her wear that same outfit when we play as her in the DLC.

They are also huge hypocrites, celebrating the sexualized male designs in games while at the same time criticizing the female sexualized designs.

I think more developers have to give out mod tools or even sell mod tools as the dlc, let players create the costume/improve the body curves and appearance they want for the characters, that way devs don’t have to deal with any unreasonable feminists and earn more money by selling mod tools.

I always thought she was wearing a One piece Bathing suit with shorts over it.

The Women they had Cosplaying as Lara for the Game releases pulled the look off better then this, especially Lara Weller.

Has anyone here played Spacelords? It reminds me of Mass Effect 3's multiplayer, as its Its a third person (mostly) PvE shooter, but with more of an emphasis on melee.
There has been an obvious attempt at making the artstyle "edgy", but I really like it. There are some freaky looking people in there, but its nice to see something different.
Its free to play, but is tough on beginners (gotta level your weapon and understand your characters weakness and the rock/paper/scissors melee system), is grindy and it can take a while to find a game. Lots of fun though.
Alicia has some sex appeal in her leotard too - despite the scars, stitches and rough haircut.

everyone knows this shit is pushed by ugly chicks no one wants to fuck. purple hair fat chicks who attempt to wear crop tops and are resentful. not everyone is beautiful the fucking definition of beautiful is like only a few people can be it. i dont know where this weird jealousy started and is now like hiding itself as some kind of progressiveness when its just plain and simple jealousy.

Reminds me of Brad Rigney's hostile takeover piece. Mixture of sexiness with a little bit of the edginess and the brutish.

Im fine with this. A character design has to be coesive. In Sonya's case, she is a hardened military general, and she looks the part.

It's intresting that people turn everything into politics and ideologies, but, do not consider that the devs might be simply designing characters based on what they think It better represents their vision of that character.

Sonya used to wear a thong with her military outfit in Deadly Alliance in the not so distant year of 2002.

Clearly not a case of developer vision for the character. MK outfits used to be skimpy and suddenly they had a change of heart.... yeah, right.

Sonya and many other mk characters had tons of designs over the years, If the kept doing the same thing and suddenly changed in a drastic way, you would have an argument, which is not the case.

It isnt, see MK1 till X, there are Multiples character designs over the years.

And they covered the girls more and more while Kano can show his whole body and Shao Kahn does that as well. Kano had actual clothes in the first MK. Mileena and Kitana showed their legs since forever and now Kitana has fucking pants. This is not a developer "vision", this is the American prude effect under the stupid climate we currently live in where it's cool to have a Hot Ryu and not cool to have a butt-slapping Mika. Feminists be damned.

Funny using Shao Kahn as exemple given the render they released of him in almost Full armor for MK11, also one of Sonya alternate outfits in MK11 is very much in line with her classic era designs. Then add the Multiples classic costumes released by NRS in MKX, and the fact that you can greatly customize looks in MK11. Now you pick Kano, while characters like Liu and Cage, which were shirtless from conception, are now in fully clothed base designs. What about D'Vorah?

NRS is always experimenting with designs, and the many examples are there, but sure, its all about "SJW" and stuff.

That "still not asking for it" sign carries a subtext that is troubling and invalidates the point the comic is trying to make..

I can't tell if you're being serious...? Topless women writing "still not asking for it" on their torsos and signs is a thing that actually happens. So, the subtext is... reality's subtext I guess?

OK, you do have good points and I forgot about some of the characters when I wrote that message. Still, I'll take a wait and see approach and see if any of the females can be considered sexy.

As i pointed, they did bring classic costumes for females in MKX, and MK11 is tackling with customization options, many of those not seen yet. The examples are there in my previous post that shows how NRS is always tweaking things. But If you choose to be selective regarding facts to make a point, this is going nowhere, even more so now that NRS is delving deep into customization.
