Liam Nesson expresses regret for his actions in Independent interview

He deserved every bit of it, the thread hijack attempt was mostly unsuccessful because very few rose to his bait, but he was still able to spread an awful lot of hate and conspiracy theories before he went down.

And some people liked his posts that contained his racism. Every racist that I've noticed coming to this board, I've been peeped it LONG before they got banned FOR their racism... I just let them hang themselves... They think they're Safe here to espouse their idiocy. The mods are level-headed and appreciated!

I don't think Neeson should be going through this ... Outrage culture is outta control!

He regrets THINKING the way he did and said so UNPROMPTED... But idiots gonna idiot.

Edit: there are valid times to be outraged ... But this is one of the times where it's not. IMO

That’s the best approach — give them enough rope and they will hang themselves. It’s only a matter of time.

Right. I used to confront racists/anti-Semites/anti-(insert religion here) all the time... but I've chilled because IN HERE the mods are about that ban hammer life!

On topic: I hope he recovers from this. The Virginia governor won't recover from his stuff though.

That liam guy seems like a nut.

Are you actually celebrating the response to what he said? Did you actually listen to the interview?

I am not celebrating it. I am satisfied that he realised his behaviour was wrong and took steps to correct it. What happens after this is not for me to decide or judge.

However since he has his talked about this, there are repercussions being felt. This was always going to happen once he gave that interview.

Has he released an official statement yet? I feel like a sincere apology and explanation of what he was really trying to say would go a long way

I don’t think so. That would be the right choice, but he could also have been advised to keep his head down for a while.

I should imagine at this point he will be seeking legal advice on how to proceed.

I think you should be more critical of the current dominant culture that is misrepresenting his comments and encouraging a dogpile on a man who admitted a mistake from 40 years ago, pointed out how bad it was, and described the steps he took to correct it.

Weird that he didn't see this sort of reaction coming.
He seems to regret and feel ashamed of even having those thought and he seems to have learned from the experience but it's going to take time for his image to recover from this (if at all) in the current climate.

I always find the mentality behind outrage mobs like this weird. For example I have left leaning friends and acquaintances who tend to take part in these outrages but the weird thing is that if you talk about criminals and prisons they are always very open to more prisoner rights and not ruining someone's life because of some mistake they did in the past. But if a more public figure said something bad 30 years ago and expresses regret over it they are evil bastards that deserve to have their careers ruined if not worse

You've hit the nail on the head there.

Because saying a word with zero context behind it is literally the same thing as arming yourself and walking the streets looking for a specific ethnicity to kill in order to sooth your anger.

(then admitting it on international media without fully going into how or why it was wrong beyond talking about "revenge culture" and expecting sympathetic hand jobs and a pat on the back)

AMIRITE?

Bullshit strawmen, ad hominems and consistent personal attacks across multiple threads, in spite of any actual arguments are so oldgaf Matt. Try to do better than that.

i like liam neeson as an actor - i think he's a solid person.

i don't blame him for what he wanted to do. people who have experienced bad things in their lives, especially their loved ones are emotionally just in doing whatever they want to do in acts of vengeance. i would know that, because i feel that too. there are times when, randomly, i remember a wrong doing by someone and then i get my second wind. it gives me fuel to the fire because of this hate and wrong that was done to me.

it was 30 years ago, so it can be said he is forgiven. but if that was his 'inspiration', then objectively, it is aged old racism. why? well, its because his thought process is the same way when white men in the 60s and 70s would justify the beating/killing of a black man that damaged the 'purity' of a white woman.

regardless, his thoughts may be malevolent, but he did not commit a hate crime.

You have to think of it back in the 1970s (when this apparently happened).

Ireland were having "the troubles" movement, which was Religiously charged with Violence, and was an Era when Carribean/Africans started to emigrate to the UK and Ireland.

Racism in the 1970s was rife, but not as bad as the US.

From what I think; Liam Neeson assumed that it was a Black Person because an influx of immigrants is an easy target (and in this case, his notions were correct), and because of the Violent Charges of Northern Ireland at the time, he did want revenge for his friend.

I think he has admitted this now, is so that those who look for ammo to target him can't hurt him that badly compared to if he didn't enclose this (since people will find it anyway).

As he mentioned, he does look back at this as a regret and probably thinks that he acted the way he did due to the prejudices of the UK and Northern Ireland at the time against Catholics/Protestants and Immigrants.

As someone of mixed race, I have been told of the prejudices my family experienced in the 1960s/70s/80s where it was sadly more acceptable than it is now.

Yes, I do think that Liam Neeson is an idiot for even doing this, but I can understand why he did act that way back in the 1970s and I doubt he would do that in this day and age and would likely report the rape to the police with his friend, which would mean describing the race of the man whether he is from Africa/Middle East/Carribean what-have-you.

That's my thought on the matter.

This is a very good post and much better worded that my attempts to explain this.

Liam Neeson got punished by the media and by all the people who feed from that because of a racist wishful thinking years ago. The media is not anyone's friend who can think for himself/herself. But what about the rapist of this same history? Did the rapist also got some sort of real punishment as Liam did? Or all that matters is to shine over the social media?

I‘m guessing his movies are now forbidden on WokeEra?
Yeah, he must be the new Hitler... I mean the monster of the week for those nutjobs. Actually heads are rolling there for anyone trying to reason this subject as an actual human being.

I can't tell if his decision to talk about it was a huge misstep or a galaxy-brain level play. On the one hand, it could very much jeopardize his career over something nobody would have known about if he hadn't said anything. On the other hand, most people know that he shouldn't be crucified for this, so it's really easy to distinguish normal people and outrage eaters based on their reactions.

Honestly, the dude is so rich he could never work a day in his remaining life and still have millions left over. I don't think he cares if he loses his career over this. He just wanted to give a good story of how he became a better person.

I agree, but at the same time, there's a difference between being able to survive and being able to live. I hope he's allowed to live.

His career is done.

Why? Because a bunch of fuckwit outrage merchants aka journalists decided to mischaracterise and outright misrepresent what he said in order to buttress their failing business model?

The box office response to his new movie will be the determining factor.

Studios want zero negative publicity relating to their investment, which is a multimillion dollar project (a film). Ppl will be less likely to go see the flick, and the studio will lose money. They'll drop anyone who causes them to lose on the bottom line: profit.

I love that the power of the almighty dollar is driving the modern left in their quest to rid the world of racist wrongthink. Deliciously ironic.

You're speculating that people will be less likely to see the movie, but I would actually speculate the opposite. People are sick and tired of this shit and see through the facade.

Addressing the initial independent interview here.

People seem to be coming to the conclusion that:

-you shouldn't admit that you once went up and down the streets with the intent to commit a racist murder for a week

-and not state that it was racist

-and not state that the lesson you learned was only about revenge and not the part where your anger allowed you to commit to deeming people worthy of death based on their skin colour.

-and then casually segue into talking about how wanting to kill innocent black people "taught you about revenge" and that's why you do these movies because you understand "revenge" and people seeing you in movies like the one you're just about to release is "good for the soul".

Uh, yeah?

Sorry matey, but if you're going to admit to being hugely racist, doing something hugely racist, or wanting to commit a hugely racist murder, try to let people know you learned a lesson about RACISM in that interview, not some fluff about revenge.

If I went looking to murder any gay person because a gay person beat up my friend and the only lesson I said that if learned was that I now understand the rage that powers revenge and nothing about the homophobic tendency that could ever allow my brain to see every gay person as part of an "other" group so far from humanity that a crime by one is a crime by all.

If Neeson had done this outside of a publicity drive for his new movie, actually even mentioned the word racism, or even slightly addressed anything to do with racism in any direct fashion the FIRST time he talked about it to international press, he'd have maybe half the backlash he has now.

Instead, he essentially said:
"Man, remember that time I went stalking the road for a woman to murder after my friends wife cheated and left him and took his money? It was horrible I know, but I learned a lot about revenge and prenups during that time, so now i like to make violent revenge films",

Now if any person in life said that to you and started talking about revenge or prenups and didn't at any point address properly the fucking part where they were so twisted that any person of a particular race/gender/etc became a murder target, i dont doubt hed have the same reaction or maybe worse.

I'm not even saying I believe Neeson is racist now, im saying his handling of the situation and how he initially chose to reveal it has caused the backlash and I don't blame some for being sceptical.

5secondrulesucks said:
revenge is okay. revenge is not okay if you say the persons race. gotcha grizzle
What?

Do you realise that in trying to be a smartass, you've actually somehow conflated "saying the persons race you wanted to revenge kill" with "killing any male of that race regardless of whether theyre the guilty party or not"?

If you think this while thing, or that even my post above is simply about being upset that Neeson said a black man raped his friend, then you're quite clearly not understanding something here.

He didn't go look for any black person, he was looking for a black men specifically, if it was racism, why would not look for women to kill aswell.
He wasn't looking for them because he thought they were inferior, he was doing it because he was upset over one of his family member being raped, and did an admittedly emotionally irrational response.

Yeeeaaaaah, no.

That's still racist.

No.

Racism is discrimination based on race. He very clearly didn't want to kill all black people because of their race.
You can try to muddy the definition of racism all you want.

I think it's really cool how everyone is ignoring a woman got raped because Liam Neeson temporarily got flushed with racial hatred that he admits was wrong.

It's almost as if believing women about accusations about their well being was last month's priority.
