This is basically what I call the diversity dick measuring contest. Developers tripping over one another to try and get their game the biggest edge in selling themselves toward people who, in all likelihood, won't even play their game to begin with. Call me cynical but it's so bizarre and it almost always feels like it's coming from a place of marketing and not any genuine desire for diversity.

It is. And its not limited to gaming.

As diverse as the entertainment industries try to paint themselves in recent years, I have to say that there have never been more token charachters in media than today. Considering we made fun of that kind of *representation* decades ago thats a sad state of affaires.

You will feel represented whether you like it or not!

I don't want to feel represented. I want to play an engaging character. I doubt I'm going to get that out of a F2P spinoff of a franchise already cannibalized by its contemporary Battlefield.

The game features "Quips", catchphrases you can unlock for your characters. It'd be hilarious if they made one for Gibraltar that went: "Excuse me, it's ma'am, it is ma'am"

Im sure this news is important to whom it concerns.

I dont like however how they are given seperate naming conventions. As if they are special.

Minorities should not be considered special, but like everyone else. It would mean they are accepted when they are treated like everyone else.

So the current narrative is not optimal in my book.

I imagine everyone will say this now, to avoid the reeeee Twitter dickhead brigade.

I don’t know about you guys, but when I’m playing a murder simulator, it’s always good to know whether my blue haired toon likes sausage or meringue.

3 black characters, 1 somoan gay, 1 race unidentified gay, 1 white male character who's name is another word for toxic and one white woman.

Yeah, this game has no agenda at all.

Outraged?
No, I just find it hilariously transparent. Wonder if you will play as a black trans jedi in the new star wars game...

SJW shit in games is just cringe worthy at this point. Character models in this game are ass anyways.

Cool, this is absolutely unneeded. Why should I care about the sexuality or gender of characters that have no personality in a game devoid of narrative? I didn't care about the sexuality of Unreal Tournament and I don't care here.

This is just virtue signaling. Good for the shallow types that look toward MP games to feel like they "exist", but I will be over here in reality.

They are not representing anyone but their preposterous ideologies. I´d be furious if someone tells me that I need to be represented as a member of a different or special group, "for my own good". I´d never take any of it, because a group of certain humans is nothing more than a sub-group, and I´m sorry, but you don´t get to define me or place me into some category. I know that guy was kidding but the activists are not.

Preposterous ideology? Having a gay character in a game is a preposterous ideology?

What about that Chappie fellow? I suspect it’s asexual, perfect for the life long virgin activist propeller heads to associate with.

It's just such ridiculous low effort pandering, it's honestly embarrassing at this point. It's the definition of tokenism. It's a lore bullet point they had some writer think up so they could wave their woke flag.

I'm sure this is directly relevant to the gameplay and story.

It's really bizarre to me that blunt tokenism is what people want and not what people find offensive.

So every hero should just be straight or undeclared in every game? Devs don’t have the right to write a diverse roster? No one is waving any flag, the devs have been super low key about it. Respawn didn’t make this a headline news story.

Seems like some mountains out of molehills. Also seems like anything non-straight white male gets labeled as token pandering automatically. Like, instantly.

Out of all the games you have ever played, how many have stated sexual orientation?

But got to market the games to reap those extra LBQT dollars as I guess those groups of people don't buy games unless a game has those characters? lol If not, then why bother?

Anyone know of any games where characters x, y and z are labels as Christian, Hindu or Atheist?

Undeclared is best as everyone can associate with any character and not care about a character's sexuality. Some people care about this. Some don't.

Thank god, when I was shooting the crap out of people I was like, I wonder if my character ever sucked off another dude... now I have answers.

If it's not directly relevant to the story then undeclared is fine.

I think of a game like Timesplitters Future Perfect and it's diverse cast, none of whom the game ever makes clear whether they're gay or straight because it wasn't relevant to the game's story.

I can see online trolling/insults right now against whomever chooses the LBT characters. One part sad, but one part funny.

Argh why, why, why EA... if their sexuality has no relevance to the gameplay then why say this? Let the players use their imagination or just asssume every apex legend is asexual.

If something like this, which isn’t in the game and has no bearing on in-game experience ( it’s literally just a blurb on the website) makes some people feel represented, that’s awesome.

If the representation doesn’t apply or isn’t relevant to you, cool as well, no harm done.

No one has to “lose,” here, this doesn’t come at the expense of anyone or anything.

Getting upset over creative decisions like this, which are harmless, really confuses me.

Respawn isn’t protesting anything, or championing anything. LGBTQ people exist. It’s as simple as that.

Waiting for the next step in bio details....... characters 1, 4, 6 and 7 are democrats. While characters 2, 3, 5, 9, 10 are republican. Character 8 is an independent supporter.

How does this relate to the game? It doesn't. But a marketing manager thought it would be fun details to know.

Reason why I haven't bought EA games for years

Nobody cares about your stupid character sexual orientations EA

I wish videogame company would focus on making good game instead of pandering to nonsensical stuff like this

But yes of course this is EA were talking about.....

Hope both this game and Anthem failed

That will put more pressure on them

But you DO care. You clearly care. You just said you don’t support EA because of it. That tells me you care a lot.

Why do I have to associate myself to the character im playing? Why is that important to some people ?

In Uncharted: Lost Legacy I played as an Indian women. Im not Indian or a women. Yet I enjoyed the game and at no point of time did I feel that I wanted the character to resemble me.

Depends on the person. I usually choose a male character, but in some games like the old Diablo 2, I took the female archer/valkyrie and even named her Xena like that chop socky (but great) tv show.

Sexuality is something totally different too.

For some people, playing as a beefed up space marine is one thing.... playing as a beefed up space marine who's gay is another.

Unless it somehow relates to the plot, things like sexuality, religion, political side, etc.... are divisive kinds of characteristics that likely have zero bearing on the game or story. So tossing these in as bio specs is skating on thin ice. it might work, but you might sink.

There needs to be a fit screen to television option in the video settings. I can't see anything at the bottom of the screen and it looks like it includes important info such as my health.

This is find weird is people feel like they have to play as a character they can personally relate to.

What I find interesting is to play as someone who's very different than me, Uncharted: Lost Legacy is a good example.

A character being relatable has nothing to do with surface level things, but emotional reasons, if you take Star Wars for example, Luke is a relatable character whether you're a white male or not because everyone can relate to his emotions of boredom and longing for adventure, for something more out of life than the status quo.

Why not?

Ok cool. So it’s a non-issue for you.

Some people like it, doesn’t need to turn anyone off.

Your experiences/feelings don’t reflect anyone else’s

Games are made for everyone.

I thought for sure Bangalore was going to be a lesbian when reading the thread title. Characters in this game are absolute garbage. I could roughly sketch out a cooler looking squad of eight in about a week. How did they get the character design so wrong?

I took Blood Hound for a stoic religious warrior, always referencing the "All-Father", etc. Now hearing he/she/it is a zim/zir/? gender binary seems really out of character. Whatever, I guess his(?) future fake religion is cool with gender swinging. Progressive fiction sure is fun! They're all gay! Yay!

You all know if they didn't have any male characters regularly engaging in fictional sodomy, the vile progressive man-children of the gaming "press" would be haranguing them to reveal the homosexuals among the Apex Legends. "So, like, where is the representation in your backward hate think game, bigots!?"
