For as much talk as I see on GAF about wanting to keep the discussion focused on the games instead of politics, and how annoying triggered SJW's are complaining about games they don't even play, things sure aren't looking that much better around here.

There's a short line in a character description on the website of the this F2P multiplayer story-less game revealing said character is gay and here we are with a thread which right now has almost 100 more posts than the OT of the game.

If this game had some form of storytelling, was an rpg i could see sexuality being somewhat relevant. Personally i hate romance options in games as i think it's cringe as fuck.
But anyway, it's a shooter. You shoot people and that's it. The fact that a character likes dick makes no fucking difference.
When i saw the characters i thought about how they had checked all the diversity boxes. It's so transparent
What's next? Obese cybernetic women? Ninja amputees? Furry commandos? We need full diversity!

Soldier 76 being gay was funny and cool. This though... I'm not against it but it's just... I dunno. It's fine I guess? Nothing changes unless you find the fictional character attractive and you're gay. Unfortunately fiction doesn't work the same way as reality as a marine being openly gay is more than "being relevant to the story."

I'm not upset but I am genuinely curious. It was just an observation with the recent trends, and since this is a forum, I asked if it was necessary in hopes that someone from the LGBTQ community could share their feelings towards representation in video games specifically. Do they feel statements like this as important?

It's one of those things where companies will cater to audiences to make as much $$$ they can. And since recent trends is full of sexuality issues, companies will adjust. You wouldn't see this in a 1980s game.

Character sexuality isn't something that 99.99% of games bother writing about. But the thinking is probably the LGBTQ community will buy more games if they can associate with characters more and Respawn is doing it to cash in. To me, I don't see why anyone would want character sexuality in gaming unless it has something important for a plot or gameplay (somehow).

I don't think heterosexual gamers are begging devs for every character to be labeled in their bio as straight. It's open ended, so whether someone controls a male or female character, they can think whatever sexuality they want. And also, whatever religion, political affiliation and even if the character is racist begging to tell the world in the bio they are a bigot.

Fun tip: If anything, every character should be classified as a murderer since the main character in just about every game kills anything that moves with no remorse.

Ammo capacity is annoying small. There's nothing like getting a garbage drop, taking up to a minute to find a weapon, and you have like, 20 rounds of ammo total between the two weapons you're carrying.

If something like this, which isn’t in the game and has no bearing on in-game experience ( it’s literally just a blurb on the website) makes some people feel represented, that’s awesome.

If the representation doesn’t apply or isn’t relevant to you, cool as well, no harm done.

No one has to “lose,” here, this doesn’t come at the expense of anyone or anything.

Getting upset over creative decisions like this, which are harmless, really confuses me.

Respawn isn’t protesting anything, or championing anything. LGBTQ people exist. It’s as simple as that.

While I do agree to a certain extent it’s awesome for those who aren’t represented as much, this still feels like those on the left pushing their identity politics into gaming just to appease those that shout and whine that their isn’t a LBGT character.

I feel like, and I’m probably not the only one that feels as if EA/Respawn did this so that there isn’t an outrage among those social groups.

I’m especially annoyed knowing it’s going to get a new thread every single time it happens in a game, which is becoming commonplace, and the threads are basically copy/pastes of one another. It’s the same people with the same arguments (including me, I’m guilty).

The “Representation in gaming” thread is great and comprehensive already, and would be an appropriate place to consolidate these “news bits” as they continue to trickle in.

The problem with hate crime legislation is that it criminalizes motive - that is, it criminalizes personal thoughts and opinions. It does not criminalize crime (largely because crime is already criminalized, so what would be the point?). But the problem is, apparently the "crime" part of "hate crime" is no longer necessary.

In the UK, a man was arrested, tried, AND convicted of a hate crime for teaching a dog to do a Nazi salute. If you think there needs to be an actual victim, or even for a crime to have actually been committed, well, I've got some bad news for you. We at to the point where virtually killing gay people being considered a hate crime is not some absurd, satirical future. All it will take is 4chan convincing people that a certain emote is a white supremacy symbol, and you unknowingly do it after killing a gay character, and you are fucked.

There's only a few hot takes like that in here. The majority of people are just worried, because we've seen this agenda play out before and it has never had a happy ending. I would be pleased as punch if these 8 characters represented the beginning and end of this particular agenda, but I'm not sure past experience really justifies such optimism.

Now, since Respawn has shown me how courageous their ideology is, I'll never spend any money on their marketplace. I'll still play their game and go about my business in the meantime.

I will be honest, I have a lot of trouble with the diversity they impose on us because I am a European born in years where it was not common to see so much diversity everywhere and honestly I do not care their bullshit ... After saying that there is no agenda, what a masquerade but here, the people in the art at home in the US force on it, surely to prepare the possible African invasion (especially and in Europe) with the future climatic problems ... (That's why the policy lets in fact because I'm always surprised that someone like Trump does not say anything about this kind of "thing" ...)

After perso I have never been racist but it really starts to scare me this big replacement in the media ... The white becomes a minority like here in this game while the developers, if you watch the videos of Respawn are for the very vast majority white ...

I find it embarrassing personally ... These people buy a good conduct by doing this and follow the extreme left movement that begins to eat away at the west ...

Well, that escalated quick. There's not really a conspiracy theory at work here, just good old fashioned brainwashing. These people were raised in schools that have taught them that history is just a parade of oppressing minorities, and that the heroes of history were not the politicians, generals, philosophers, or scientists, but instead the protestors who enacted minor social change at extraordinary cost. In their mind, by over-representing the minorities they think have been oppressed throughout history (like they were taught), they are following in the footsteps of the civil rights leaders that they have been taught are the true heroes of history. They simply see themselves as the protagonist of their own very boring, shallow history book.

They're wrong, but that's a different story. They aren't grooming us for globalism. These people don't get invited to those secret meetings. I'm not even sure they elevate themselves up to useful idiots.

I'm in the "eh, whatever" category. Never cared about character backgrounds in games, unless it has some link to the plot (and I usually don't care about the plot either )
It does feel a bit silly to make it a marketing point, but that's the world we're living in. We'll have reached true tolerance when gender/sexual orientation of fictional character won't be a talking point at all, but just another feature like size, hair colour or dominant hands (nobody wonders why there are so few left-handed characters in games, and even most left-handed people don't care).
I guess such questions may have purpose with characters that could be seen as sexy, it did work for Overwatch and all its fan-fiction community. But I don't see the Apex characters being "shipped", not with that design anyway.

I'd agree with you except for two things. Despite the fact that their playerbase is almost entirely white males, the only white male character is behind a paywall and literally toxic (also the least attractive character). I don't feel obligated to play as a good looking, hetrosexual, white male (I like the robot), but it does seem to me that this was an intentional decision and that worries me. It's way too on the nose for it to be accidental and it seems almost like it is challenging the very people they are asking to be their fans.

Second, the game has microtransactions and lots of them. Like, a seriously offensive amount of ways to nickel and dime you. Mixing a political agenda with real money is never a good thing, such as when a company released a magazine that was 30% cheaper for women. Microtransactions are already an incredibly thin line to walk, and when you add a feeling of righteousness and superiority (and EA) to the mix, well... it worries me.

So, I'm not put out. Just worried. Like I was worried when I saw "The Force is Female" shirts on the people who made The Last Jedi (you know, right before there were a bunch of articles calling Star Wars fans misogynists for disliking the terrible movie). Nothing wrong with the shirts, but it did turn out to be a pretty clear harbinger of what was to come.
