Red Dead Redemption PS4 Pro HDR and Blur

I know there has been a lot of complaints about the terrible HDR and Blur on PS4 Pro. I want to start Red Dead Redemption 2 this week. Is the HDR is bad and is the blur still there? A bit of blur I can handle but does the HDR still suck? Should I rather just play with HDR off?

HDR is broken on all consoles.
When you have Dynamic HDR, HDR, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Display HDR 400, Display HDR 500, 600, 1000, Display HDR True Black 400 and 500 then you know it's a fucking shitshow.
I'd say looking at the above list and perhaps some more missing that the corporate fucks are too eager to push their own standard instead of settling on 1 or maybe 2.
Didn't Horizon and some other games have good HDR or can we pick the good ones on one hand?

Horizon had really good HDR. Detroit's HDR was really good for me as well. HDR is a shitshow at the moment. And when I see shitty HDR you always hear "Well it was our artistic choice on how we think HDR should be implemented." when it just looks shit.

These are more ratings and specs than standards. You don't need to "support" all of those, you just need to use the right extended color gamut/range, and RDR2 does not while many other games do a better job at it.

The issue is that to look great in HDR, the game content needs to be authored in an HDR pipeline, which is not the case today in almost any game studio.
Not necessarily the studio's fault when hardware manufacturers are dragging their feet to release HDR monitors (not TVs) in the first place.

Good post and yes we got the professional grade monitor in the mix as well that's part of the problem.
Reminds me of consumer grade monitors OLED+burn-in free+144Hz+GSync/Freesync+whatever else that's not coming together in one package, but that's for another day.

So it's best just to turn it off? I would have thought R* would have fixed the HDR by now.

Yes, on PS4 it is a menu option, on the XB you have to disable HDR on the console for all games.

Rockstar will probably never fix that. Which is really sad since
RDR2 would have been even more beautiful with proper HDR support.

I've never understood the deal with HDR at all.

Because you have not seen a good HDR Implementation on a
really good HDR device (like the Sony ZD9/Z9D).
Especially the HDR device is important in order to experience a good quality. Unfortunately most Low Budget TVs <1500€/$ won't give you an "awesome" experience. HDR with static meta data is another problem that causes problems in some cases.

Maybe so, I have a Sony 65XD9305 and honestly cannot tell what HDR even is.

That's a edge-lit VA panel with faked/baked HDR.

You need a proper HDR10 supporting TV with either OLED or full-array back lighting.

So all the reviews saying it has decent to good HDR capability is just BS? Does make sense since I barely can see any difference with HDR.

Go take a look at either Samsung's QLED offerings or OLED by LG, Philips or Sony in a store (or buy one and test it out at your home).

You need a proper panel, proper software support, proper local dimming, and proper peak brightness for HDR(10) or Dolby Vision to work.

It's a night and day difference between quality HDR and SDR. Gears of War 4, for example, looks like candy. The lighting in movies actually looks realistic, candle light in darkness or such actually looks like it was in your room.

Ok. Guess I'll take any review in the future with a huge grain of salt.

Or at least understand the technology and what you are buying. And edge lit doing HDR is like a HD ready SDTV, yes it can decode and show a picture, but that picture is not representational of the actual source. True HDR requires zone brightness control (FALD systems) or per-pixel luminous response values (OLED/MicroLED). Your tv can not do this, so you lose the most obvious (and my favorite) part of HDR, the ability for scenes to basically blow you away with their true dynamic range. For white caps on what’re to looks spectacular, for the sun shining through trees to be blindingly bright and look totally amazing, as supposed to what your screen is doing which is basically just displaying a 255 value white pixel at a few hundred nits of brightness, basically doing nothing different than an sdtv.

Certainly I understand that edge-lit is inferior in every way to a FALD set, and I didn't expect the HDR to be mind blowing because of this but I expected at least to clearly see a difference with HDR on after reading reviews that the HDR was decent on the set, however struggled with extremely bright HDR scenes.

This thread ended up focusing on HDR but I'm personally hoping they improve the blur.

I don't expect it to match the X1X but from the digital foundry comparison there were some shots that arguably looked better in the OG PS4 ...which is disappointing to say the least

Lots of other games get it right, there is no excuse for the broken HDR on RDR2.

What in the world is wrong with you two? Get over it.

Why are you quoting my post? He was the one being aggressive for no reason. I think I responded quite respectful all things considered. And we had stopped until you showed up. So get over it yourself.

I found it too much of a hassle to set up, and considering I could only ever get it to look as good as non-hdr I just turned it off.

Digital Foundry made a video about it I think.

The HDR is faked, it's just an offset of brightness. Doesnt matter how much you increase it, the difference between the highest and the lowest brightness will be the same.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
No you don’t... literally impossible for an edge lit to be good at HDR.
This is 100% bullshit and ignorant. While Edge lit is not usually found with high end TVs it’s every bit as capable if done right and can offer every bit the experience of FALD.

The Sony 930E (2017 model) is an edgelit TV and to this day has one of the best contrast ratios of any LED and has excellent HDR.

I'm leaning more and more towards HDR maybe is broken or not working on my set then. I didn't buy it for HDR anyway so it's not a big issue. I might get the 65Z9D since it's on sale at the moment for around 1600 bucks here. Still seems to be the king of LEDs due to peak brightness and number of FALD zones.

I still can't believe Rockstar was given a pass on this. Only a couple of websites even really touched on it, Eurogamer the most probably.

To me it's just as fucking egregious as the whole Fallout nylon bag scam. Sticking HDR on the box when in fact it's actually nothing should be cause for a public apology and a promise to do better. Saying that the PS4 version is 4K AND HDR should be cause for a recall.

Like Nintendo, R* seems to get a pass on many things.

The best way to play RDR2 on a PS4 Pro is to turn off HDR and set the PS4's output to 1080p. The blur will be gone and it will run at a locked 30fps as well as minimize fan noise. 1080p actually looks sharper and clearer than the 4k setting because of that nasty blurring effect in 4k. As everyone has already said, the HDR is poorly implemented and causes it to look washed out.

Keep that in mind, the last DF video about RDR2 HDR warn about burning screen issue if you keep using HDR.

That's odd because I've seen AC Odyssey in 4K HDR (Xbox One X) on a Sony 55XD9305 (so the same TV as you except in 55 inches) and the results for an edge-lit TV are spectacular (and I'm saying that as an owner of a Sony 65ZD9) so I'm guessing there must be some issues with your TV settings because your TV can output a great HDR presentation.

Thanks Cranberrys! Yeah I find it odd too. I guess I will check all the settings one last time when I get the chance but cannot understand what I might have missed.

I had an edge lit 4K set (Samsung JS8500) and while HDR wasn't as good as in a new QLED or OLED it still looked really nice. In games that made good use of it (like FFXV) there was a very obvious and very clear difference when turning it on.

So maybe edge lit TV's can't make the best or "true" HDR but they should definitely be able to give decent noticeable results.

It's Rockstar. They could release a blank disc and the gaming press would be like "A bit light on content: 8.9/10"

Have you tried any of the Ubisoft games on HDR on your TV ? So far, from all the games I've played in HDR on my set, I found that AC Origins, AC Odyssey and Far Cry 5 were the most spectacular, while others not so much. I'm currently playing RE2 Remake and while the game is awesome, the HDR (at least on my set) is pretty dull.

I can ask my friend about his settings if you like, since he's got the same set as you (except in 55) but whatever the problem is, it's certainly not your TV.

You can also try some 4k HDR Blu-ray like Interstellar which also looks awesome in HDR on my friend's 9305 (especially all the Imax sequences).

I'll ask him and get back to you soon.

I'm not sure Watch Dogs 2 has an HDR mode. I Don't recall of one, at least on Xbox One X.

Up to this day, nothing, no fix for the broken checkerboarding, no fix for the HDR, nothing......Rockstar could at least have given us 1620p or 1800p on the PRO instead of the 1920x2160, the latter will never scale nicely to 4K, that should have been fixed ages ago.......
