Aladdin Special Look Trailer w/blue genie

I don't think it looks as bad as some but they made a mistake making Will Smith look so much like himself. Should have made his chin bigger and distorted his face a bit more so it didn't just look like blue Will Smith. At least Jasmine is suitably hot.

It's a real shame they didn't distort the genie at all or try to make him a little more cartoony or a little more unreal, it basically looks like a slightly more muscular Will Smith.

But even in his current form, Will Smith is cartoony. In fact that cartoony style (CGI blue whatever-the-fuck smurf) sort of defeats the purpose of a live action movie with actors. What's the freaking point of making an actual movie with human characters inspired by a cartoon if it's going to feature CGI versions of the actors? People here might not remember (or even seen it), but in "It's a Wonderful Life" (the famous 1940's movie), there's an angel named Clarence in it. He's entirely human & that's the route they should have taken with this Aladdin reboot IMO. Otherwise, it's just a glorified "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" with CGI instead of cartoon animation.

Also, Jafar is way too young, good looking and has zero menace in his kid voice.

Yeah, forget about the genie. How did they screw up Jafar that profoundly?

I dunno, the Who Framed Roger Rabbit? approach could have worked really well for this film. An animated genie would be no more surprising to Aladdin than a blue Will Smith. And it'd be a neat continuation of the old Disney tradition of mixing live-action actors with animated characters. (Song of the South, Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks)

Because it's a big fantasy summer blockbuster remake of an animated summer blockbuster...

I mean even made for TV movies have "some" special effects...

I mean you could have Will Smith just play himself, (again something I think that's already happening) to an extent, but I can't imagine that would draw many crowds.

People want to see the Cave of Wonders brought to life, people want to see Agribah in all its Glory, people want to see the genie and all his magnificence..."phenomenal cosmic power itty bitty living space"

One of the weakest parts of these Disney remakes is there a horrible casting in my opinion Emma Watson is Beauty blech awful choice...

Although I will say if they make Abu CGI then boo I'm out... real monkey, real monkey I say!!

Everyone pretty much just don't look right in this trailer. Aladdin is suppose to be some hottish street punk. Jafar I understand is going for the hot bad guy since I guess they didn't want an old guy salivating over a young woman. Jasmine just feels western. I was originally going to say American but she's British. Both Aladdin's and Jasmine's outfit look bad and I guess they are just majorly covering up everyone except for genie. The genie's head doesn't quite match the body.

Will Smith's genie doesn't look great, but I don't hate it as much as most seem to. Although I wonder if they should have gone with a totally CGI character so they could have done more creative stuff with him transforming. But maybe that would be a little too close to Robin Williams' version. It's kinda funny that everyone complained that the genie wasn't blue in the initial pictures and are now complaining how shitty he looks. I guess these Disney films are something a lot of us grew up on so we tend to have strong feelings about them.

These remakes are obviously just cash grabs by Disney, but I've actually enjoyed the ones I've seen so far.

I m not the least bit upset just making observations, and the biggest one I made is that the genie doesn't sort of look like Smith, he looks exactly like Smith

I think the rest of the very small amount we've seen looks fine thus far, just the Smith Genie sticks out IMO

Just to be clear I'm not making fun of the people reacting negatively to the way. I get it. Just that it seems like Disney seemed to go from one bad choice to another. Like you said I think they would have been better not having the genie look exactly like Will Smith. If he was a little more "cartoony" he wouldn't stick out so much and they could do more with him.

Man, Aladdin is still one of my favourite Disney films and part of the reason for that is the absolutely brillant performance of Robin Williams and the charm that the painters/drawers managed to put into the visual style. This looks like a movie that had been outsourced to Artstation with a checklist of what boxes to tick. And whatever method they are using to blend Will Smith's face onto the Genie isn't working. Maybe they should've gone full CGI on that with a more cartoony style.

Maybe Disney should've just given that project to Pixar, saying: "Go to town, guys. We know that you will do something solid with Aladdin."

I too think CG is the way to go. And artistic cg not fake realistic one. Work that forgets the flaws of this world, and focuses on the ideal.

Aren't Scientologists more advanced than Geneis? Will the Smurfs claim blueface? Parents just don't understand and neither do I.

Just to further push a point, the trailer looks so stiff and lifeless compared to the animation. I know being aninated they have an advantage in terms of creating appealing designs, but damn...the original is still so good.

My theory on why they made the genie look just like Will Smith in blue paint is for marketing purposes. They can plaster Will Smith's face on everything to make sure everyone knows he's in it. Every other person in this movie is a complete nobody.

Imagine the movie poster - a handful of complete nobodies and a giant CG blue genie. It wouldn't catch any attention. But a giant blue Will Smith smiling and pointing? Now you know it's a new Will Smith movie.

This is why I didn't enjoy Beauty and the Beast live action. Everything was lifeless. No expression, weird uncanny valley feelings from the CGI characters, and no impact whatsoever, it was just bland and soulless.

As soon as I saw the Cave of Wonders, my heart actually sank.

I'm starting to think that Aladdin is really set on a dystopic future like that wacko theory said. lol
