Yeah, it's very interesting - especially what this means for the PS5. Pretty sure it will have some sort of portability just like the Switch. Otherwise Sony would be handing the market over to Nintendo.

Im not even sure Sony cares about "losing" Japan considering how strong it is elsewhere.

Besides I think it is as much of a price thing as anything. The system is still $300 in the US which is unbelievable really - its amazing it still sells as much as it does at that price.

I think they will prioritise the west and the competition from Xbox. With Microsoft's heavy investment into new studios and Game Pass it is very important for Sony to get out of the gate strongly with PS5, to continue dominating the market. Nintendo's strength in the home market may be painful for them, but sacrificing technological prowess and consequently possibly giving Microsoft a competitive advantage probably is not worth it for them.

It's interesting to see how quickly 3DS has died. Switch really did chew up its sales. Meanwhile, PS4 is slowing rapidly, Vita is dead, Xbox isn't even registering. Nintendo pretty much has the entire Japanese market in its lap, but even then, the numbers are far lower than they were during the DS/Wii era.

We're not seeing anything new on the videogame front, just sequels to long-established franchises. Some are very successful, like Smash Brothers, Mario and Zelda. Others are less successful. Either way, there's very little to feel excited about at the moment, but we're in February, so that's to be expected.

I would expect Sony to build hype for their Playstation 5 if current PS4 sales continue to lag. I also wonder what Microsoft's next move will be. Should they even bother with Japan anymore?

As always, the elephant in the room is mobile, which has no doubt had an impact on console and portable sales. How large an impact, and where those trends will go, remains a bit of a mystery.

I mean, not selling as good as Nintendo's and the industry's most successful things ever is hardly a bad sign on its own. Launch aligned it's selling faster than the PS2 even...
