Brie Larson Isn’t Letting Her ‘Captain Marvel’ Press Tour Be ‘Overwhelmingly’ White and Male

I always find it hard to call a film that made over $200mil in the us alone, a 'bomb', but yes in Star Wars terms, it was a bomb.
I actually liked the film a lot, prefered it to The Last Jedi.

I just like to go with the double budget method. It cost $275 million USD to make and made $392 million USD world wide.
It's pretty insane how it cost so much money to make.

Has a 65 right now on Metacritic. Hell Time Magazine gave it a 40/100.

I can't believe at one point in the film No Doubt’s “I’m Just A Girl” plays during one of the fight scenes. Its like satire.

To be fair it's a banger.

You have to take in account the fact that Disney doesn't get the whole box office, last I saw reported is that they (due to their strong position) get 60% of the domestic box office take (typically it's ~50%), with the theatres taking the other 40%. And the take is worse for the foreign box office, with China being particularly bad as it only returns 25% of the box office gross to foreign companies.

So Disney made ~$130 million of those $213 million domestic, and much less out of the $179 million in foreign box office. Given a $275 million production budget and a lot of millions for advertising/promotion (reportedly typically in the $50-100 million range for big releases like this), Solo lost Disney a big chunk of money, so yes, I'd say the term 'box office bomb' is very apt in this case.

Yes i'm well aware how box office works, i'm a memeber of box Office Theory, and a former 6 year member of Box Office Mojo.
Financially the film bombed, i was tjust talking more of the fact that when you say a film flopped or bombed, its normally like a film expecting to make 150-200mil, but grosses like 30-40mil. A lot of films, even summer blockbusters, would bite your hand off if you offered them a $200+mil US gross before release. If you get what i mean.

Also unless its stated otherwise, the reported budget includes Marketing, but it depends who is giving the budget number out. Thats why sometimes you see different budgets depending on what site you go on. Plus studios have a yearly marketing budget that covers all their films for that year, and is not usually used against a films succes because that budget was there anyway, if you get me.

When it says 'production' budget, as in this case and is AFAIK always the case on Box Office Mojo, it does not include marketing costs.

That said it's important to note that this discussion is only about the 'Box Office', hence the term 'Box Office Bomb'. Movies can make a lot of money post Box Office, with streaming and Bluray/DVD sales.

Also there's merchendise which can generate a lot of money for popular franchises, although Star Wars merchendise seem to have dropped a lot in sales compared to the Lucas days.

This is going to be interesting. I checked reservations and it does not look good. Some theaters are empty for Sunday or only 10 seats are reserved. In Germany, Switzerland or France the theaters are far from sold out this weekend. Maybe it is different in the US, Australia or UK.

I have no idea if these numbers are accurate from wikipedia, but this is a page of the biggest box office bombs. You can sort it by year and check out the most recent movies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_biggest_box-office_bombs

I had read that Solo was somewhere in the 50-80M loss range, and that's exactly what it says here, so who knows. It's just weird because even a movie like Justice League supposedly lost $50-100M despite doubling its production budget, according to this list. I don't remember reading that it lost money, though it was so awful I feel like it should have.

Just watched it last night. In my opinión it is a 6/10 at best. It starts extremely slow, you can deduct the plot from a mile away, and as usual Marvel movies, you see her in SSG form during maybe just the last 20 - 15 minutes of the movie.

The CGI in a specific scene where she was falling from the sky looked extremely bad, like ps2 level quality CGI, but that type of cut corners are always expected in almost all Marvel movies, Avengers 1 included. It is a nice histórico movie, as you see the starts of Fury and Coulson, but besides that it doesn't adds a lot.

And last, but not least, she is insanely poweful, to the point where one can even argue if the other characters are actually needed in Endgame to confront Thanos, so it will be interesting to see how they can manage to balance her out with the rest of the team, and more importantly, with Thanos.

Well, he does have a point somehow, though he sure could have phrased it better...

I mean, I saw Battle Angel last week and the teaser trailer section was really something else. We had 5 trailers... Shazam, Xmen-Dark Prophecy, Avengers Endgame, Spiderman Far from Home and Captain Marvel. That was it. 5 comic book movie trailers, 4 of them from Marvel.

For the love of everything that is saint, it's about time that something changes.

I really hate this complaint. Currently in cinemas, we have:

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral
Alita: Battle Angel
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part
Fighting with My Family
Green Book
Isn't It Romantic
Greta
What Men Want
Happy Death Day 2U
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
The Upside
A Star Is Born
Cold Pursuit
Apollo 11
Run the Race
Bohemian Rhapsody
Glass
The Favourite
Everybody Knows (Todos lo saben)
Aquaman
Total Dhamaal
The Prodigy
Free Solo
Arctic
They Shall Not Grow Old
Vice
Ralph Breaks the Internet
Mary Poppins Returns
Bumblebee
Furie (Hai phuong)
If Beale Street Could Talk
Cold War (Zimna wojna)
Never Look Away
A Dog's Way Home
Escape Room
Asterix: The Secret of the Magic Potion (Astérix - Le secret de la potion magique)
Climax
Miss Bala
The Mule
Extreme Job
Capernaum (Capharnaüm)
On the Basis of Sex
The Iron Orchard
Sonchiriya
Birds of Passage (Pájaros de verano)
The Kid Who Would Be King
Stan & Ollie
Saint Judy
The Wife
Transit
To Dust
Lords of Chaos
Shoplifters (Manbiki kazoku)
Woman at War (Kona fer í stríð)
I Killed My Husband (He matado a mi marido!)
The Wedding Guest
The Last Resort

I italicized the "super hero" movies. If you want to go out to the movies and see something that doesn't have anything resembling a super hero, you have a FAR greater selection than people that want to see a super hero movie. Just because tons of people like super hero movies doesn't mean you have to. It also doesn't mean that other types of movies are being made (and, in fact, far outnumber the super hero genre).

Fnord Fnord is dead on, 1st of all I wouldn't include Battle Angel Alita as part of the superhero movie, it's based on an old manga, a sci-fi one at that... Unless of course you're going to include Astro boy in there too lol

Secondly complaining that everything today is a superhero movie is The equivalent of claiming that every video game is open world it's simply not true

There are more than 100 movies released in North America ALONE!

How some of you are so tired of CBMs already is so odd... Considering there's TONS of other genre movies released every year!

And superhero movies get the vast majority of press and marketing dollars spent on them. Most people consume film on a casual basis, they aren't keeping track of every release coming out every day.

If 9/10 commercials are about superhero movies, that is the impression people will get, fairly or not. It's tiring

The people whinging about comic movies, I wonder if they actually do support and see other films that are released.

I do not have the intellect to discuss any topic with nuance. Please Marvel at my ban.
then this bitch opens her mouth and something stupid comes out and I feel like I shouldn't see her movie...

Looking like a $160+ million domestic opening weekend to kick things off for "this bitch" and she's off and running without you, your insecurities, and your attacks on diversity. Hmmmmm... how about that? And after Black Panther and Last Jedi were enormously successful as well, huh?

Looks like you, and all your sexist, hate mongering little friends lost... yet again.

Wow... where to even begin, Sport? While you may not be a hit with the ladies, spelling is your friend, mate. Call me a "reefugee" if you'd like, but I didn't leave this board... it left me.

And this "cunty" bit? Much like Rey and Rose before her, Brie has taken the day. Take the loss, Champ... you and your little lads have truly earned it.

Their entire campaign against Brie and the film is sexist. When someone shows you who they are... believe them.

Films aren't judged based upon their opening weekends. We've seen enough Transformers/Last Jedi's to know the first 3/4 days mean nothing. There are often cases when the more people are caught-up by the hype & go to see the film, the worse the backlash is. Here's the fact numero one: Marvel's cinematic universe has been one of the most successful (of all time) franchise building/popular blockbuster series in cinema history. Captain Marvel is piggybacking on the name. There are millions of people out there will automatically go see whatever has Marvel plastered on the title. The real effect Captain Marvel has on the franchise will be felt later.

It also could easily drop off the second week and by the end not even reach guardians or wonder woman worldwide numbers for example.

I just watched the movie and... it was alright.

Samuel L. Jackson mostly made the film very enjoyable for me. As for Brie Larson, she did a serviceable job with a bland character which I don't blame her for. This is the problem with feminist thinking applied to a superhero movie, "strong independent women" with little character flaws are not interesting.

I still don't know what her powers are exactly and then
her power boost at the end
had no explanation.

Brie Larson should have just kept her mouth shut with all her SJW nonsense and none of this controversy would have occurred, because really the film is not very outrageous or scandalous.

Looks like the film has had a great opening, projected at 160 million. Good for it. All this arguing over stupid stuff just makes everyone look silly and petty.

Some people hate the movie because of something Brie has said. Some people hate the people who hate the movie for something Brie has said.

And then there's the majority, who either don't care or don't know about the controversy and just want to watch the movie to be entertained.

Hurling profanities as a response? The last bastion of the smallest, most insecure excuse of a man.

Nothing to do with the debate, but could have at least posted a reaction gif with attractive people in it. Not a good look for a goodbye.

Agreed. I think the majority just want an awesome movie that they can kick back and enjoy. Infinity War was such a good comic book movie and I was excited to see another Marvel movie of that caliber... From what I've read, this film isn't that though?

Forget any of the SJW stuff and I've read that we are still left with a film about an overly powerful character who faces no real challenges, with a mediocre plot and not the best special effects or well shot action sequences?

If thats the case then that's a shame because Infinity War had awesome action sequences and effects, fun character moment and an interesting plot filled with challenges and setbacks for our heroes. That's the kind of thing I want to see from Marvel movies now, even the origin ones. The bar has been raised.

I'm curious about two things:

1. What you bring to this board. I'm struggling to see it.
2. What was sexist - presumably to be sexist I'd have to know the gender of the person I'm being sexist towards.

I feel IW and the Russos have spoiled people for what to expect out of MCU movies.

I expect some big blasting shit to happen in Endgame. Quite perfect and insane that we only know about the first 20-30 min of the movie (traile, superbowl spot) of a movie that most likely will last 3 hours.

I expect this following the Avengers theme:

1. A countering voice to the "SJWs are the world's greatest problem" circlejerk, for starters.

2. Really? You called pixel's friends "cunty," as in you think having a vagina is a negative. Really not the kind of word to use in a thread about a movie like this.
