Captain Marvel Response and Reactions

The movie was okay. On par for me with iron man 2 and 3, doctor strange (actually like this one slightly more), the ant-mans etc. Not needed to be seen in the cinema to be able to enjoy endgame, cause it barely provides anything new to the lore, actually confuses and slightly retcons some stuff or introduces small plot holes instead.

But overall majority of normal moviegoers will probably have a okay to good time.

Brie definitely had some moments where she maybe was too stoic, but overall I think she is nowhere near wooden as some people say, and her performance is also not outstanding as others suggest on the opposite side. She did a fine job and hopefully becomes better with subsequent movies. I think a problem also lies in the weak script and direction of the movie overall that led to some of her acting ups and downs.

Would have loved too see the conflict between the kree and the skrulls fleshed out more. Ben Mendelson was good, so was Jackson, even though I hate the explanation of how he lost his eye. Ronan was a glorified cameo.

The cat was also way too overhyped. It provided some fun scenes yes, but the way people talked about Goose beforehand I expected more.

I've already pre ordered the steelbook for my collection but I expecting something like Ant-Man
I don't wanna take peoples reviews seriously because Blackpanther was "Oscar worthy"
When in reality it was probably one of the weakest, I'd rank Hulk higher tbh.
I'd rank them in tiers
S - Civil War, Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man

A- First Avenger, Thor: Ragnarok, Iron Man 3, Doctor Strange, Iron Man 2, Avengers: Age of Ultron
Ant-Man and the Wasp

B - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,
Ant-Man The Incredible Hulk, Thor: The Dark World,

C - Thor, Black Panther, Spider-Man Homecoming

I think my whole list currently shapes up as:

Tier 1:
Captain America: Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2
Guardians of the Galaxy
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Black Panther
Avengers: Infinity War
Ant-Man

Tier 2:
Captain America: The First Avenger
The Avengers
Iron Man
Doctor Strange
Captain America: Civil War
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Thor
Iron Man 3

Tier 3:
Thor: The Dark World
Thor: Ragnarok
Captain Marvel
Iron Man 2

Tier 4:
The Incredible Hulk

Never going to watch:
Spider-Man: Homecoming

What are you even talking about?
Isn’t it great that we can have marvel movies in common. I agree with your fury comments.

Separate thought It’s funny that this really wasn’t a girl power movie even if the trailer tried to make people think this. People reaching with carol being gay is weird to me also. It was just another hero movie some are better but not many. And she did smile in the movie a few times also. The internet is just shitty sometimes on their opinions.

Just got back from seeing it. It was just OK. Quite frankly it could have been better without bringing up her past. That could have been done throughout phase 4. This movie could of just been about the mission. Also the 90s music didn’t fit in certain places.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Just saw Tyrone Magnus review.
He is usually positive and fair reviewer
I think the beginning of the review says it all

How would you resolve the reveal plot without delving in to her past? It's all intertwined. Do you mean just the Rambeu stuff? I assume that's to set up Monica later.

let me get sentimental here

man you sound like a soccer mom telling her friend what she did over the weekend more and more. like dont you have a spine? dont you just every want to say "fuck this shit" i dont have anything in common with you. i dont know what its like to just be a complacent boring person.
This is amazing are you trying to unlock his inner rage hidden power level.

So I was talking to my dad about the movie and there is something bugging me. The movie said something along the lines that one of the reasons Carol agreed to fly Lawson's test plane was because the Air Force wouldn't let her fly otherwise or something along those lines. However Monica and her both have call signs and jets of their own and can be seen getting in them. Does anybody remember exactly what it was the Air Force wasn't letting her and Monica do? Was it combat missions they were barred from?

Honestly Carol Danvers was pretty repulsive in this movie.

I'd call her an asshole to her face even if she blew my head off for it.

I'm happy to see the audience score slowly climb up, hopefully it will land at a decent percentage when things are all said and done.

:messenger_tears_of_joy: yeah we will rest on a "decent" score after we purge everyone with the wrong opinion

Nah.
Writhing a day of first day premiere, I think there was 10,000+ user reviews and mostly negative at 20% or so. Now it's at 57% with more level headed reviews.

Obviously those initial 10k had an agenda. So many negative reviews in a short time. Most of them probably didn't even see the film.

Even on Letterboxd it's way more level headed, it's at 3.6 out of 5 after 36,000 reviews or so.
127 gave it 1/2 star.
201 gave it 1 star.
380 gave it 1.5 stars
1500 gave it 2 stars.
2800 gave it an average score of 2.5 stars.
6900 gave it 3 stars.
8700 gave it 3.5 stars.
9000 gave it 4 stars.

I'd say Letterboxd is a bit more for movie buffs so Captain Marvel is not review bombed on there by dick heads.

Hmmm isn't it interesting how the movie is being "review bombed" by low scores, but the bots giving it high scores, that doesn't seem to bother you nearly as much. Those aren't made by dickeads, those bots are made by saints

I guess anything goes to get to the correct, I mean "decent" score and opinion reflected

There are bots giving it positive reviews? Link?

*EDIT*
I just found out that the movie originally had 58k reviews on it's first day? LMFAO
Yes that is definitely and agenda being pushed there.

From the other thread:

I had two different but similar experiences seeing CM yesterday and today.

Yesterday I went with my good friend. The theater was only half full (could be attributed to the tickets being $18.xx each for RPX) but there was a lot of laughter and some applause. She said she really liked it and it was better than she thought it would be.

Today, the theater was PACKED (different theater and standard screen... Cheaper tickets also) and again... Lots of laughter and some applause. My son was JAZZED about it and his mom was amazed!

I'm genuinely surprised most of you all didn't have a similar experience.

I'll make it simple and clear. There are bots there and still on the RT page. Why you now trust the number is telling

I think they just said missions in the film but considering they were fighter pilots that would be combat missions. If I remember correctly, women weren't allowed to pilot combat craft on missions up until 1993 though they could fly support craft doing things. I could be wrong though. Carol and Monica were active pilots in 1989 and before since the film takes place in 1995 or so.

Lawson's craft was probably technically considered a combat craft but not under the rules of the military at the time.

Movie was fun as hell. Weird thing but I really like the sound effects they use for her blasts.

It's gonna do really well. I think it's already at half a bil already, I think.

Captain Marvel debuts to a $455 million dollar global box office

The Brie Larson/Samuel L. Jackson/Reggie the Cat sci-fi adventure opened with $153m in North America this weekend, which is the second-biggest solo superhero non-sequel launch behind Black Panther ($202m in 2018). It's the third-biggest March opening of all time, sans inflation, behind Batman v Superman ($166m in 2016) and Beauty and the Beast ($174m in 2017).

It's the fourth-biggest non-sequel launch behind Beauty and the Beast, Black Panther and (if it counts as a non-sequel) The Avengers ($207 million in 2012). The Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck-directed sci-fi adventure just scored the MCU’s seventh-biggest opening behind Iron Man 3 ($174m in 2013), Captain America: Civil War ($179m in 2016), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191m in 2015), Black Panther ($202m in 2018), The Avengers ($207m in 2012) and Avengers: Infinity War ($258m in 2018). It earned a solid 2.55x weekend multiplier (it earned $53m in Saturday and around $42.6m on Sunday) and an A from Cinemascore.

....

It performed not like a standard MCU origin story (somewhere between Ant-Man and Doctor Strange), but like a true-blue mega-event movie that served conventional superhero fans and those who so desperately wanted a female-led MCU movie. For what it's worth, it earned 51% more than Wonder Woman's $103.5 million opening weekend in the summer of 2017, so by default, it's the biggest female-led superhero launch of all time. To be fair, the MCU is a trusted brand while the DCEU was still/is still on double-secret probation. I'm not expecting Wonder Woman's legs, if only because I'm expecting Shazam and Us to be better (and thus sharper competition) than The Mummy and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Still, even a 2.69x weekend-to-final multiplier (about on par with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) puts Captain Marvel just over/under Wonder Woman's eventual $412.5 million domestic total. Regardless, it won't even be a contest overseas (and thus worldwide). Captain Marvel earned $89.5 million in China alone, which is about what Wonder Woman earned ($90m) in total in China two summers ago. The film has already earned a whopping $455m worldwide over its opening frame, which is way more than Black Panther's $371m global launch (albeit, it didn't open in China right away and opened in North America on a Fri-Mon holiday) and the sixth-biggest global launch ever.

It currently sits just ahead of Batman v Superman ($422.5 million in 2016) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($450.8m in 2017), and behind only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II ($483.2m in 2011), Jurassic World ($525.5m in 2015), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($529m in 2015), Fate of the Furious ($541.9m in 2017) and Avengers: Infinity War ($640.5m in 2018). So unless Captain Marvel is super frontloaded like Dawn of Justice (which ended up with "only" $873m worldwide), we're probably looking at another $1 billion+ franchise-launcher for the MCU.

Ant-Man 2 is just horrific. It makes Black Panther look like Citizen Kane.

Ant-Man 2 suffers from the same primary issue that CM does which is an unwieldy and overstuffed script. That said, Ant-Man had a better core cast, chemistry, and a much more exciting climax to lift it up some.

The positive bots should be removed, it's not good that they are there at all.
I went through 29 pages of the reviews and only found one instance of the review you mentioned above, the "simple" review so it look like Rottentomatoes are culling them.

I'm at work at the moment, what does the YouTube video say?

Very happy too see it did well and hit the original projection (as expected, heyuck).

It actually did better than I was even expecting. I thought it was gonna be around $800-900 millionwhen it was all said and done. I didn't think it would crack the Billion mark. She just isn't as well know as her other MCU counterparts, but if these numbers hold then it could very well crack a billion which to me would be crazy.

Also it fucking KILLED in China for some reason and I have no idea why. I mean it basically made what Wonder Woman made in its lifetime there in the very first weekend. Thats nuts.

Very strange. China usually thumbs its nose at any of the Western social justice stuff. I wonder what made this one popular over there.

The funny thing is if you actually watch the movie its not very "SJW" at all aside from a few jokes towards the beginning and maybe one or two towards the end. I think Disney/Marvel used that angle in the trailers and in the press in order to garner attention. And to their credit it seems to have worked.

It's not a social justice film, there are maybe 1 or 2 scenes that point to social justice, not the whole film.

They kinda did as the film dropped pretty hard after it did gangbusters the first day and the audience response was fairly muted on social media. The film is pretty darn light on action and spectacle compared to the blockbuster fare they tend to like.

Maybe the social justice stuff was just reserved for the Western marketing campaign then. I have no idea how film marketing works in China.

My favorite Marvel film is Thor Ragnarok. Sue me.

Ragnarok is amazing. I’ve probably watched it least 6x on Netflix alone, twice more in the theater, once when it first dropped on digital release.

Amazing movie. MCU needs more Taika Waititi.

I know Taika said he won’t take over GotG out of respect to Gunn, but if I were Gunn I’d ask Taika to. I’d want my baby in the best hands possible

Obviously those initial 10k had an agenda. So many negative reviews in a short time. Most of them probably didn't even see the film.

And who cares? I mean seriously, why the special defense force for Captain Marvel when Twilight Saga, Transformers, Passion of the Christ etc. among trillions of movies which for xyz reasons had their fair share of "haters"? Then there's the reverse phenomenon whereby fanboys give it a 10/10 automatically. Notwithstanding bots, i.e. literally people who rate a film (including without seeing it) because they're fanatics about the product for their own reasons. What about their agenda? Captain Marvel is treated like a monarch whose dignity & reputation must be preserved "at all costs". In reality sites can't just "choose" to cull opinions about a movie they disagree with, not without seriously delegitimizing the whole concept of an aggregate based upon popular reception.

My favorite Marvel film is Thor Ragnarok. Sue me.

"Oh, Miek’s dead. I accidentally stomped on him on the bridge and I’ve felt so guilty, I’ve been carrying him around all day. Oh, Miek you’re alive!"

Classic.

Wait how was she an asshole?
It was one thing to accidently crash land into a Blockbuster , and another to cause collateral damage in a chase scene, but Carol often treated everyone and everything around her as if she owned them.

If you want I can elaborate further, but it's late and I'm going to bed. I also saw Alita Battle Angel today and jfc that movie was so much better.😮

I agree that Alita is the better film but would like you to elaborate.

The train is pretty much the only time I remember her interacting with the populace. After that she spends some time on a PC, ignores a guy on a bike and then spends the majority of the film with Fury. Stops at her friends house for some bonding and then gets to know and makes fun of Talos. Then their adventure to space.

What exactly did she act like she owned?

I don't care about this movie enough to want it to fail, but please let Endgame be good and not a series of Mary Sue moments by the newcomer.

Come on, Marvel. You've done so well so far...don't drop the ball this far into the game.

i disagree. marvel movies have been too fucking safe. i think they have got some good directors to make their movies but its too much studio interference but come the fuck on. experiment a little. do something different. i guess thanos winning is the biggest thing theyve done in this aspect but i dont know ive always expected more from all their movies and ive got nothing from it. the best thing you can say is they are decent and the worst thing you can say is that they are decent. its pure mediocrity

I saw this just now and thought it was pretty cool. Love the outfit lol

Ehhh. I really enjoyed Winter Soldier and Raganarok (for completely different reasons). I think they're definitely highlights in the Superhero movie genre.

My thought process on Infinity War is a little different: that movie could have failed in a dozen different ways. It was a massive undertaking that was almost destined to fail. From translating the source material to bringing all the movies together to making sure everyone got the right amount of screen time to making Thanos memorable to That Ending(tm)...so much had to be done well in order to make the movie work. So I have to give respect where it's due: they navigated a minefield and still produced something decent. Can they do it again? Heh...

i think i just have a higher standards in what movies and art should actually be. if what youre looking for is on a cup or a box with someones face on it at mcdonalds then sure ill agree. i want some art baby. and i disagree when people are saying these stories cant be more than that. everything marvel studios has brought is just average. if i think its just that then you mother fucking know they know it. on spectacle alone they also fail to provide it because in fact the dc movies provide more "wow" moments

I don't have higher standards for superhero movies. Same way I don't expect fresh fish when I go to a franchise burger joint.

I think the Nolan Batman stuff is probably closest to what you're looking for. How do you feel about The Dark Knight?
