(Rumor) Sega Possibly Partnering with Google on Next-Gen Console.

If the new Google Consoles exclusives are good, would you switch to it from your XBO/PS4/SW/WIIU?

Rumors have been swirling that Google is set to enter the console video game market with not only a streaming service, but its very own hardware as well. We’ve already seen patents for a Google game console controller, and the tech giant is expected to properly unveil the project at the 2019 Game Developers Conference on March 18. And if a new rumor is to be believed, the Google console’s expected unveiling at GDC will include the announcement of a major partnership with Sega to produce games for the device and streaming service.

This rumor appears to stem from YouTube channel Spawn Wave, hosted by Jonathan Downey, who didn’t provide any sources for where he got this information. So fans should take these claims with a massive grain of salt, though the prospect of Sega returning to the console market will no doubt get some gamers excited at the possibilities.

Right now, there’s not a lot in the way of new Sega games announced for existing consoles, which is one reason why this rumor is somewhat easier to believe than it would be otherwise. At the time of this writing, Sega has no main series Sonic the Hedgehoggames announced for PC, PS4, Switch, or Xbox One, and only a handful of other titles have been announced, like Team Sonic Racing, and the PS4-exclusive Judgment. Sega is undoubtedly working on new video games, but perhaps we haven’t heard about them because they are in the works as exclusive titles for Google’s unannounced console.

This is the 2nd rumor of Sega possibly making exclusive software for Googles upcoming gaming machine. Considering how development news and release date announcements went silent when this machine was still a rumor, and the fact the outputs been low since around the same time as well, I think it's probable that this could be true.

Of course, until the March 18th reveal we won't know for sure, but then the question becomes what games could Sega possibly have set-up if it is true? Sega will likely not put it's PC or PS4 exclusive games on Google. Maybe a 3D Sonic title and a revived dead franchise like Virtua Fighter? Of course Google does have the money to get Sega to bring it's other games exclusively tot he console as well, I just don't think Sega is the company that Google would want to spend rockstar money on.

One things for sure though, from the info so far this Google Console seems to be an actual serious attempt to break into the market and not just another micro-console.

what am i going to be streaming?

yakuza? sonic? I'm sorry but i'm set with my home console and handhelds thanks.

If im going to get on board with any of these streaming devices its gonna have to be shoehorned in with their existing services. Amazon wants me to try New World? well i better have access to it as a prime member.

Damn I'd rather Sega also have a hand in the hardware development. I mean if it's just a streaming box then that doesn't matter but if it's more traditional with streaming capability then I want Sega involved. I use to love me Sega consoles.

In before some crazy fans come explaining that google is going to throw a shit-ton of money at games in series that no one knows anymore.

I predict the polls: PHyzIcaL MEdiA hurr durr

But I won't switch, I just buy them all if there is something of interest worth to play.

If SEGA has a say in the hardware design... might be interested.

I don't get this mindset since the last two big home consoles from Sega were poorly made with several hardware and reliability issues. The games were good though.

Something to consider though is, IF Googles stream machine is actually not ONLY streaming but also part dedicated device, exclusive Sega games could be made for the ground up for it and that could improve their quality as if Sega made the console.

Of course we won't know which it is until the 18th, but if it is a 2-side console that could spell trouble for the big 3. Depending on how much money Google is willing to lose on it.

Reliability issues? Nah, while I won't deny that these systems can have issues, SEGA's hardware build quality is pretty solid.

You'd have to be more specific when you say "poorly made" and "reliability issues".

Oh god I’m crying tears of joy. I just know we’ll get the Panzer Dragoon Saga remake and Phantasy Star V as launch titles.

What?

The Dreamcast is widely known for its hardware issues so I find this to be a surprising comment. Also sounds like a Jet ramming into a train.

But to be honest, Googles hardware is pretty well built as well (software is a completely different discussion) So I think they'll do a good job on whatever this turns out to be. Maybe.

I’d rather buy a “Dreamcast Classic”

Are you sure about that? 50hz Dreamcast Classic with maybe 1 or 2 of your favorite games on the list, half are sports titles like NFL 2k. ;) $199.

This happening I hope they target a more portable device rather than a home device.

But I dont know man... For a new company to barge in they need to have one hell of a system, and more than that a catalogue of games that manages people to bother.

Not an easy tasks, not even for Google.

Well Sega missed two opportunities of partnering with Sony back before the first PlayStation, then partnering with Microsoft before the first Xbox so why not go with a company where their only real revenue success is shoving ads in your face and selling their customers to advertisers.

And yes this was posted on my Android device.

Outside of occasionally watching a YouTube video I. NEVER use anything Google. I'd quit gaming before I'd use a Google data-mining spybox.

MS datamines how many zombies you kill, what makes you think they don't datamine actual useful information on you?

I'll wait till they actually unveil it but it's a streaming device so I'm ready to just hate it out of the gate. Seems like a bad move on Sega's part.

Saturn had a pretty spotty disc drive. I have not heard of any big issues with Dreamcast though.

Dreamcast had a functioning 60hz mode in pal regions.

Not here to defend MS. But Google’s entire business model is to collect your data so that you can be targeted with ads. Their customers are advertisers, their product is your attention and ultimately the perceived change in your behavior.

I don’t trust MS either, but at least their primary customers are gamers rather than advertisers.

Even if it is true, it'll probably be just classic games released, like they've just released for the amazon fire devices (stick, tv and so on)

I wouldn't be expecting anything major from this device...

Initially this was true when google was new but now their customers are exactly the same, everyone collects data now. They sell to the customer AND the advertiser. MS and google both target advertisements and take a cut in revenue from their stores in much the same way. Google just happened to get big on it with search and MS like always with anything successful entered the same business on all fronts.

MS gathers user data for advertising dispite their 'Scroogled' smear campaign. The 'xbox one was built with advertising in mind' if you remember MS pre-xbox one launch executives talks. It collects your data and even says so in its privacy policy

  • Advertise and market to you, which includes sending promotional communications, targeting advertising and presenting you with relevant offers.
It has the ability and right to collect and share pretty much anything you can think of with your interaction with the console. Your age, picture, name, location, communications, preferences, reaction times:

There is nothing different that Google will do or target that MS hasn't already.

Google will be after that customer game and microtransaction money as well as targeted ads much like MS already is. MS' product is also your attention which is also why MAU is now a key driver rather than sales too.

Would be a weird choice, I like Valkyria Chronicle and I love the Yakuza team but Sega is definitely far from being as relevant as they once were.
Not sure if google wants to launch their streaming console with a crappy (probably) Sonic game
