I just remember the days when streaming started and people were streaming for the love if the games and the community, its just too commercial and money orientated now.
It just sucks seeing 40yo streamers playing Fortnite and badly acting like they are loving it. Streamers like that DrDissrespect guy (who can be mildly amusing with his reactions) getting $1000+ tips and not even acknowledging them on stream. Pretty girl streamers getting $10k tips from fat bald old guys (sen this happen live twice myself). Its just such a shithole.

I don't see anything wrong with that, marketing takes all new forms these days....

There isn't anything wrong because streamers are mostly absolute mongoloids so nobody would confuse them with journalists (although gaming journalists are also equally dense you wouldn't take them for professionals either), but it's ethically flimsy whether or not this is straight advertisement.

The most hilarious thing about this is the fact that Ninja would have played A BIG NEW BATTLE ROYALE FROM A BIG DEVELOPER ANYWAY. Hell, he played cheap shit like Radical Hights simply because it was a new BR. xD

So they could have saved themselves the money and watch him stream it on the day of release if he was at home anyway, lmao.

I don't have an issue with this except I feel it should have to be 100% clear that the video is sponsored content.

Other forms of media (television, radio, etc) are legally required to make it clear when someone is being paid to promote a product compared to offering an unbiased opinion.
Except he's not an actor, and he's not in a clearly marked commercial, apart from that, spot on. It's a clear indicator that these influencer shills are no better than any other low rent person who gets a sniff of fame. They almost all have personas of being one of the people, just another gamer next door like you, who just happens to have made it big. And you can join in, watch them play games, hit that donate button, because they're real, just like you.

Except he took a big fat bank transfer of 1 million dollars to promote the latest craze BR game, under the guise of playing it because it's fun. Some of the minor details have changed, but morally he's no different to TMartn and his CSGO lottery bullshit. But no one cares, and he will continue to make money hand over fist. Don't dismiss what a shill he is. Remember it for the next one.

Mmmmm. It said #AD on the YouTube videos. The videos would start with a intro saying “this video is SPONSORED by APEX”.... then he would say this video is sponsored by apex.

Also Ninja is bigger than all these streamers. They hired the man to be in NYC’s New Year special.

This seems crazy man.
Well it's free money, especially if he was going to play the game anyway......I guess a name and popularity brings you so much these days.....He was also at the New Years Celebration in Times Square last year, so I guess they believe there is an audience which they think he can market things to quite easily.....

For once I agree with you.

I mean who wouldn’t want to be paid to play a game tons of people are enjoying?
I think you may have agreed with me on more occasions than you're willing to admit :messenger_beaming:.....

Well yes, if this was a journalist, this would not be a two page thread........Guys like Ninja are different, they play games to get a following and subs, and most times you have to be decent at the games you're playing, nobody wants to see a guy lose every match, where the streamer is just bitter and frustrated.......Yet, most importantly, if a streamer is entertaining/funny etc....that goes a long way and can even supercede his natural gaming ability or lack thereof...Yet, I guess Ninja has already made his name as a great fortnite type of player and he probably has a spiky personality as well to keep his audience engaged.....

OTOH, do you think just paying Ninja a million dollars was a cheaper option for EA?......We never heard of APEX before it's launch, it just launched.....There was no warm up to it, no time for a big marketing campaign or anything.....I think having big streamers there on day 1 was instrumental for them, notwithstanding, the reviews were great.....Everything just aligned for that title....

It sounds like a lot, but I wonder if it saved them a ton of money compared to their regular advertising cycle that big games usually embark on. I wouldn't be surprised if they got more bang for their buck by paying Ninja a million compared to millions that they can spend on TV, Youtube etc.

I mean, this is the downside of streamers taking over for journalists -- they have no interest in a code of ethics. (Yeah, "ethics in gaming journalism" but this is a genuine example of the kinds of dilemmas journalistic outlets are supposed to defend themselves against.)

Disclaimers are definitely appreciated but also entirely voluntary for now and may even be required by the FTC? IANAL

Fingerlickin' Good!
How much did Cliffy B pay him to play that awful battle royale game he put out I wonder

I dont see anything wrong here. Remember that most game´s budget like a third is on marketing. This game was almost shadow dropped (some leaks) and most of the marketing was word of mouth/streamers.

I really like the game, the genre is very popular, ninja is a big streamer. It all makes sense to me. Now, a million for like 8 hours sounds insane, but in the big picture, I believe it was a good decision. The game gained traction super fast.

I wonder what it would cost to put a national advertisement campaign on TV for a week or two. This is probably cheap in comparison and far more targeted since nobody watches cable TV anymore.

Maybe Cliffy told Ninja, he should be honored to play Lawbreakers for free or be associated with LB in anyway.....That it would actually quicken his career.....Hell, Cliffy, probably told him 'You should pay me 1 million to play Lawbreakers"......

They should’ve reached out to me. Would’ve done it for half the cost.
Are you as good at these games and have a following as Ninja does? :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Good for him.

Might seem insane, but consider corporations pay millions for commercials. Not just the air time, but actually paying companies to develop ads for their brand. Companies always have money set aside each year for advertisement and marketing.

If anything, 1 million was prob a steal. Considering the amount of eyes they got on his streaming compared to the usual cost of making ads and paying for air time.

That said, should have went with shroud :p

Why is this even a thread, you pussys don’t complain when celebs are advising cars, alcohol or perfume

I fail to understand why you cunts thinks videos games are any different

Yet they complain that development is too expensive and their smaller dev's still just earn enough to barely get through the month. All while throwing money out the window for such pr bullshit and disproportionately high salaries for ceo's, cfo's, cco's, etc.
This makes 0 sense.
They did not do a big marketing campaign. Their campaign was to pay money to streamers and it paid of big time and earned them alot of money. A normal campaign prob would have cost even more.

Don´t really see the points if they paid him and didn´t make him play for long, he would have done that sooner or later but I guess EA just wants to make Apex real competition for fortnite at this point.

As long as it is disclosed that it is a paid stream, I don't see any issue with it. For people who have a problem with how much he is being compensated, why? Seems like sour grapes to me. I don't care who gets paid or how a company spends their marketing budget. Why should I? Would everyone be somehow happier if they spent the same million on traditional advertising? Why would you care?

I'm always happy to see anyone succeeding.

Wake up. Comb hair. Take a dump. Play video games for two hours. Pick up a $1,000,000 paycheck for the video game playing...

Must be a good life.

Dr. Disrespect is the most fun.

Shroud is ok to watch.

Never watched Ninja.

I know we should be grateful for what we have, and I am, but...

Things like this make me hate my life.
Don't feel bad. That old addage of "only focus on what you have." went out the window in the mid-2000s. Now it's all checkout these people making millions of dollars by uploading a video of them enjoying spending a half a million dollars of their parents' money.

Ninja's a dumbass, but he's a marketing expert. So is EA.

What better way to promote your "Fortnite killer" than have the biggest Twitch streamer, who happens to mainly stream Fortnite, stream your game?

More than a few people angry about this (why?) I have some news for you, 15 years ago it cost $1m to get an ad for anything on the front page on Myspace for just a single day. This is advertising, exposure, that is how it works. Is it worth it, yes. Does this make Ninja (or whoever) a sellout.. I guess. Does it make them bad, should we be angry at them? OF COURSE NOT. They are a product/service selling a product or service. All is fair. And I will tell you, I am a "grandpa gamer" I love playing tetris, ms pacman, galaga, etc. At this point I'm inclined to DL Apex and give it a whirl for 20 minutes. Why not..

Because it allows people to be disingenuous if you don't make it clear. What could be considered an opinion piece or news actually has a hidden motive of money exchanging hands. Would you be OK with other media doing this? Say your daily news or gaming sites?
