I HATE ANTHEM

Bernkastel

Ask me about my fanboy energy!

I mostly agree with everything he said except for few parts. He says Anthem is like Destiny in 2014, so you are better of playing current Destiny , but Destiny Year 1 is considered to have the best weapon balancing with Thorn doing 7 tick damage, Gjallahorn and Black Hammer melting bosses and Suros Regime and Vex Mythlocast ruling the crucible, everything being so hard and rare to get(remember the Thorn bounty or Rahool giving blues from legendaries) and exotics feeling like exotics.
He also says that Destiny does not have a good story but has perfected the shooting and looting aspect unlike Anthem, which can't figure out what it wants to be. But story and lore are actually one of the best things about Destiny.
Apart from that I completely agree with this. But it's sad that some people still hate Destiny.

Put 40 hours into Anthem, and liked it, but after playing Division 2 (which is a very simialr game, apart from the obvious differences), you realise Division 2 is just a better game, with far more content and variety.

destiny 1 had great shooting mechanics, guns that felt amazing and the vault was awesome. anthem doesn't even have that.

Terrible game. Didn’t even use up my trial hours; dropped it after an hour.

I mean no offense to anyone who bought the game but I feel less sorry for people who did than people who bought Fallout 76.

At least with Fallout 76 people were desperate for a new Fallout game.

Anthem is a brand new IP so you'd THINK before you bought a full priced game you'd have at least googled it first.
It won't take you long to find
"Gamers boycotting Anthem"
"Anthem Breaking PS4s"
and very average - bad review scores.

I know it's youtubers being youtubers who will buy the game to complain and get views but I'm seeing it on forums all the time about people hating the game and suprised about how bad it is.
The writing was very much on the wall for weeks.
If you like the game that's great but if you don't... well what can I say.

Anthem is like Destiny if Destiny did not have such great gunplay.

Destiny gunplay is what keeps it breathing, without it? it would be total shit.. like Anthem.

End game (VoG), loot reward, classes/subclasses and weapon design were all better in Destiny.

Plus the gunplay.

Same here, I made it about 5 hours into my 10 hour trial before I finally admitted to myself that the game is freaking terrible.

I wanted so badly for Anthem to be great. Looter shooter with Iron Man-like flying, mech suits, beautiful alien world to explore, from Bioware’s “A Team”.... how could it be bad?

Anthem combat was a lot of fun on colossus until the latest patch. Bastion itself is well-done too, but everything else in the game and I mean everything else is garbage that felt like it was duct-taped together by people who have never played a videogame in their entire lives.

The meme is that EA kills studios but at this point it'd probably be a mercy killing.

The movement during combat is good to even great. The rest of the game.... I mean.... it was obviously rebooted and held together with duct tape

I hit 40 hours of Anthem and haven’t felt an urge to play since. The way they bungled loot in a looter is just simply embarrassing.

Great potential, but ultimately a squandered oppportunity

Do you like those kind of games?
Becouse .i don't like sports games..and for me fifa sucks,i don't play even free...or others sports games....

I do; enjoy them a great deal.

I just thought the combat was average at best, the hub city is garbage, everything takes too long, there are too many special effects, the guns are all too similar and it's trying too hard.

Far preferred Andromeda. Why the studio known for compelling single player games has decided to make a looter shooter is beyond me.

Also, I don’t think Anthem will grow into something much better than it is now because I don’t think it will get a chance to.

I think its already being maintained by a skeleton crew and after a couple content drops it’s gonna be pretty much on ICU life support from a manpower standpoint.

Destiny at launch had 6 strikes, the raid and pvp. And many amazing weapons.

Anthem has none of these. Three strongholds and a dozen samey weapons. It's a looter shooter without loot.

I think so as well. 6 years in development and the final product is a broken buggy game with very little content.

I’d bet that the higher ups at EA decided they’ve sunk enough time & money into this game. They decided to cobble something together so they can release it and recoup some of their investment.

I highly doubt it will be like the Destiny games where tons of new content comes out and it eventually becomes a good game. EA likely considers it a write-off and wants to let it die a quiet death.

Which speaks volumes. Division 2 (beta) did nothing to me and I don't think it's more than just average.

What's up with those usually top-tier developers lately who doesn't understand shit about their audience? Blizzard, Bethesda, now BioWare. Especially when there are so many games out there you could learn from. This is beyond me.

I wanted to like Anthem. I still might. However, the void left in it's wake has been filled by The Division 2. I made my choice already. Don't have enough time to put into both.

I get excited about loot almost immediately in the Division. Having "brand gear" from jump is just awesome. You can have a "build" going at level 5, short lived as it is because you're leveling. This is an advantage though because you get kind of a preview of what you want your end game build to look like. The enemy AI, while not genius, is very...hmmm..."swarmy". They flank aggressively and the different factions actually have different tactics, even more than the ones in Division 1. The "bullet sponge" mechanics only happen when it makes sense. Like yeah you expect some hulking behemoth to take a lot more bullets to take down, but once you blast through his armor he's just another guy. If anything, I'd say we are the bullet sponges now. The story is somehow minimal but still engaging. It feels like it's more about finding instances or snippets of a truly chaotic recent past along with truly circumstantial current events. The voice acting was always good in the Division, but I feel like it really shines in the sequel

Anthem...I mean I don't see how anybody gets past the loading screens. That's what made me stop. Maybe I'm not patient but man some of those screens felt like over a minute long. The characters I did get to meet were...okay I guess. I guess I expected people in this type of world to be...darker? They feel like they belong in Monster Hunter World rather than Anthem. The word "anthem" itself is a very heavy word. I expected more, suffering, more sadness, more pessimism. Your sidekick, forget his name. It's like he's on something. Super Happy, joking all the time. Dude there are 30-story tall monsters made of lava and shame outside the one wall we have. Please be serious. Granted I didn't have enough time with the game to truly give an all encompassing opinion of all the characters and the side stories, however I've heard nothing but mediocre things. This, from Bioware...who have now broken my spirit twice. It's like a bad relationship, I just had to cut myself off. It's not healthy. Not for them, or for me. They need to be better and I don't know what they need to do to regain their former glory, but until then I can't see myself with them.

I don't think most people that bought Anthem are the people that go online to search for game reviews/impressions. They're probably people that saw ads on public transport/billboards/TV/Youtube of some Iron-man looking dude flying around shooting aliens with his friends and thought, I want a piece of that pie. Then dropped the game after 5-10 hours of play. EA most likely spent a ton of money on the ad campaign of this game. But unfortunately for them, it's not really the casuals that keep this kind of game alive and spend tons of money in MTs. That hardcore playerbase is fizzling out fast from the looks of things, and now that word of mouth is out about the game being bad from their friends, new casuals will probably be reluctant to pick up the game as well.

I know what you're saying but (And I guess this is a general point on gaming not just with Anthem) it's a LOT of money to spend on something you don't know anything about.

I guess I just don't understand casual gamers sometimes especially in the days of smartphones where the information is literally seconds away from you.

But sure it's none of my business how people spend their money just curious about the mindset is all.

Most people I know who bought Anthem was burned out from Destiny 2. It was something fresh and sci-fi. After the honeymoon period wore off, they went back to Destiny because Bungie's gunplay was much better and the game was more mature. I'm heading off to Division 2 because that beta just felt good and worth my limited time investment.

I can't sit through a 50-minute video at this point with someone griping about Anthem.

I can't even defend Anthem, but the core is solid, and I feel like if EA lets BioWare stick with it...

Then, this is going to be a pretty fantastic option in that Borderlands, Destiny, Division space if you're so inclined.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I am enjoying the game. On my home theater setup, no game has looked better than flying on Anthem running at 4K. The special effects combined with the combat is fantastic.

I often feel that the people who complain about the current state of games are hardcore players who can put more than 10 hours a week on a single day.
I play only a few hours a week, and to me, the game still feels full with content and offering new experiences.

What do you mean by core? If it's the mobility of the suits then yeah but that's just about it. The repetitive mission structure, uninteresting AI, disjointed and counter productive story telling, loading screens and no stat screen drag the experience down.

Glad I got the game for free but I'll probably won't even play it in the state it's in now. OP's video reconfirmed my bad impressions I have of this game.

For me it was quite the opposite. I played 5-6 hours of my 10 hour trial. A good chunk of that was looking at loading screens or re-launching the game after it crashed.

And when I was actually playing, most of the time was spent defending radio beacons and other piles of miscellaneous scientific equipment against waves of brain dead enemies. Then sorting through my stash of bland identical-looking loot with boring and barely significant stat variations.

The core gameplay loop is fun and distinct, and it's more than just "mobility" (but that is a big part.)

There's enough there that if BioWare fixes all the other stuff you've listed, it's going to be successful in the end.

I got it for free so I'm trying to play through the main campaign. Though all the missions are super-samey. Initially I thought I would solo the main campaign missions to be more immersive but there is literally no reason to when missions structure is so basic and boring. Set pieces are frozen in stone, switches and puzzles are monkey-at-a-keyboard level of difficulty. I mean at least D1 had fun platforming and some puzzle type elements to their fights. Bioware really should've done something more creative with the flying dynamics in battle beyond a basic ass time limit.

This review's sarcasm and forced punchlines are as bad as Anthem's. It's things like Reddit and youtube critique culture that explain how a game can be this poorly written. This is the audience they're going after. I agree with his sentiment about characters being "too cool for school" but I get the impression his review is trying to be too cool.
