Captain Marvel Response and Reactions

Of course, they have to write down these women are "badass" because if you watched the movies you couldn't tell.

I don't remember the last time they had to specifically tell me how male badass movie characters are badass.

The insecurity is pretty high when dealing with female characters.

Well, there is Shuri, Okoye, and Nakia from Black Panther but they're not the lead.

I might have mentioned it earlier, but Kevin Feige has said they do intend to eventually bring in Kamala Khan who is the new Ms. Marvel in the comics. Obviously it would be hard to introduce or allude to her any way in the first film since it's in 1995 (Kamala is only 16-17 in the comics plus IIRC she was born in Pakistan before her family moved to the US so no logical way they could do an Easter Egg for her in this movie).

Also, in regards to what nkarafo said, I think it's because the amount of badass men greatly outnumber the women. Like nine pictures (and stretching all the way from 1977 to today. I mean, yeah that image didn't have all of the female badasses in film but it's not exactly helping its argument ironically), Arnold could probably fill those number of pictures with his noteworthy action badass characters alone.

Besides, male characters obviously do have their badassness pretty obviously shown in films. That part in Civil War where Cap is holding down a helicopter and it goes on for a decent bit? Yeah, that was all but screaming, "see how tough he is, woo!" Nothing wrong with that, but when women characters do pretty much the same thing suddenly the whining from the good old Internet begins. In fact, Steve pretty much had the same experiences of people initially not believing him and proving them wrong just like Carol.

I thought First Avenger was great.

Really Thor was the only Phase One movie I considered less than "really good" and it, to me, was just "okay."

Iron-Man remains probably my favorite MCU film, but its close.

Funny enough I thought First Avenger was the worse Phase One movie and thought the first Thor was above average, but better than First Avenger.

Are you saying there are none at the moment?
Or that the pic maker 'chose' not to put any?

Re the first, Pam Grier and Halle Berry come to mind.
On the second, there are far, faaaaar more 'white' women who fit the bill. And there are only 8 spots to put them in.

Maybe we shouldn't read too much into it.

I'm supprised people are still into superhero movies. After the same movie for the 5th time I was done.

Maybe I grew out of them. Maybe they became predictable.
Maybe I just don't go to see movies at the theater anymore.

I dunno how people still go to see this stuff. Just not for me anymore. And I'm glad to get out of the pool so to speak.

This is why I hope Brightburn does really well.

I would love seeing some new formulas.

Evil superpowered people. I guess Chronicle kind of did this, too. But I would like a universe around it. Do the Injustice storyline.

Have a series where an evil Superman or evil super beings won, I mean really won. A world enslaved, people living in terror of the super people, stuff like that

I hope Brightburn starts a new trend.

I haven't heard of that, I will give it a look.
But yeah. Movies like V for Vendetta and Watchmen and 300 all were better "comic movies" than these superhero movies. My opinion.

A little bit of both actually. And the bolded probably is a problem, to be honest.

Also check The Boys out. It's a take on superheroes unlike any you will get from the MCU or DCEU films/shows.

I have heard it called "Watchmen on steroids," but I am not sure that quite does it justice

I feel like there is a group of people containing those who likes and disliked movie but agree that Larson was weak and maybe miscast.

For those of us in that boat, who would you rather have seen in the role?

I’m kind of warming up to Charlize Theron as Carol Danvers

Larson was weak, compared to other super heros in our Marvel movies. But I don't think it's a complete miscast. And if her character is going to be around for 10 years, you couldn't have hired Charlize Theron. She's 43 years old now. Carol Danvers is younger than that.

Charlize is great but too old for the part, though they could have de-aged her only to use her current age in End Game. Any actress with talent and personality would have worked. I like the gal who played Aquaman's girl.

I believe that’s Amber Heard? I liked that movie a lot more than I thought I would.

As disappointing as her performance was I don't know if I would say she is miscast as far as the acting goes. Her character in Room could easily work as Carol with a few tweaks. I think it's a matter of producer mandate since even the directors' strengths were absent. The bigger problem with Larson is her lack of chemistry with pretty much everyone in the film.

The core issue is that Brie isn't playing Carol Danvers the person, she's playing Captain Marvel the symbol.

I liked the movie. It wasn't amazing but I would put it ahead of both antman movies in terms of entertainment value. Brie felt out of place in most scenes and her acting just felt off. I still managed to like the overall movie though. My biggest issues with the movie however were more of things that felt off from the comic universe and not things directly related to the movie per say.

I'm not ready to write out Larson just yet, we shall see what incredibly competent superhero directors like the Russo's can do with her...

If she's still wooden and stilted then yes I would say you need another actress, but sometimes it's just terrible direction look at Mark Wahlberg in the happening lol

I still think her "wooden" acting works within the context of the narrative. She is constantly told to control herself and her emotions. BUT I also think the directing is certainly an element, like they didn't know how to direct her. How to show under that wooden surface there is a charming, jokey and likeable character.

There should have been more moments where her "real" personality shone through.

I agree the Russo's will do a better job. If everyone falls in love with her in Endgame, the crazy thing is that Larson did that film first. So technically she should feel more comfortable with her character by the 2nd film.

The script also sabotages her from the jump by relegating most of relationships and personality to quick flashbacks instead of us actually getting to really see her interactions. It's like if they decided to make Captain America: The First Avenger but not let you see of those moments with Peggy, Bucky, and Erskine and just stuffed all that development into a handful of flashbacks and montages. I could see just about any actor or director struggle with making that work.

Good flic. A bit slow but other than a few times I didnt really feeled bothered by political stuff. The scan of Fury was clearly a shot. The other being her friends pep talk was a bit much.

The plot itself is weak but is elevated by being in the MCU. But the lack of any strong antagonist or threat really hurt the film. I'd say 6-7ish and near bottom of the list in rankings.

Watched this only because my brother asked me to go with him and hang out. One of the worst Marvel movies. Brie has no charisma, just as the trailers portrayed. I thought it was mostly a bore and poorly directed. Weird pacing. The
cat/octopus sideplot
was moronic. The Nick Fury retro CG wasn't flawless, leaving a very distracting uncanny valley thing going on during the film. I expected it to be a 7/10 and it was worse than that. The "girl power" moments were a little hamfisted, but not completely stomach churning.

Edit:
Save your money and Redbox or Netflix it.

Also Brie is seemingly not very athletic, as her janky "girly run" would indicate, making it hard to believe she's a warrior badass. She's either boring or
COMPETELY FREAKING INVINCIBLE, destroying everything that opposes her at a whim (including colossal Kree warships). So in other words, still boring.
And her costume looks like a very expensive Halloween outfit made of rubber. Pretty cheesy and she doesn't wear it well (doesn't look or move like an elite athlete/warrior.)

One thing about your spoiler: that’s straight from the comics, in fairness.

What makes you think Larson will look as good as Charlize in 10 years?

Hiring Charlize does not automatically equal a better movie either. I mean she wasn't that great in Prometheus for example.
If the only ingredient we are changing is Brie Larson to Charlize Theron, we most likely would have got the same outcome.

No review bombing though because she doesn't speak out like Brie does,

I thought her performance was strong in Prometheus.

Anyway, I was just posing the question as a hypothetical “What If?”

I don’t want to replace Brie immediately or anything.

Was just curious to see some names thrown out there

Yeah I had this feeling as well. I could see how they sort of missed the mark,. Where she is a confused character and the implant and what she has been told gave her no chance to be herself. Then when she was it sort of seemed awkward. It just wasn't a very well developed or directed character.

I personally have never really considered the MCU films as an adaptation.
This might sound weird but I've always considered them as another Marvel reality, like the MCU Avengers could travel to the 616 universe and they could interact with 616 Avengers. Does that make sense?

Yeah, if that was the angle they were going for then botched it from the get go.
She doesn't come off as all wooden or lacking in her emotions during her initial moments with the Kree which really hurts it as a premise. Besides, telling her to control her emotions so she doesn't blow a hole in someone is a far cry from telling her to be some to be walking emotionless husk. Furthermore, she doesn't really listen to Yon-Rogg anyway.

To be honest I've really started to hate the entire setup for her character in this. It's basically Bucky except with the accountability and remorse stripped away and just turned into a wish fulfillment power fantasy of all things.

Saw the film in the cinema on Sunday with my two boys.

I just realised now that not one thought of identity politics was in mind IRL during the film.

Phew, I'm still normal.

Film was good too. A bit of a reference to the refugee crisis, but nothing too bad. Can't wait for End Game.

Yep. Also I thought the refugees and terrorism excuse for war was way more prevalent and important While watching the film

That said my gf and I had a pretty heated discussion about how she interpretted the movie.

She saw a lot more of the men telling Carol she wasn’t good enough. It really didn’t register to me I just thought it as a basic “get up when you fall” sort of thing. I saw Carol as reckless and hell that is probably why she is a test pilot. She has a few screws loose.

It’s not like she wasn’t successful after all those people told her to be careful or she couldn’t do it. She proved them wrong long before having super powers.

Just watched the film, I liked it overall. Not top tier like Black Panther but not mediocrity like Ant-Man. The only problem I had with the film was the 90s throwbacks, which felt singular, forced and out of place instead of creating a consistent and believable timeframe from which the film was supposed to take place, it was a bit half-assed.

GRR Martin must have been chuckling to himself as he typed that he was a purist when it comes to adaptations, before going into full belly laughter mode as he rolled around in his millions thanks to HBO.

What pushes it into a more feminist undercurrent is the fact that it's ONLY men shitting on her during the montage. They also genderbent Mar-Vel to make sure she had no positive male influences in her life. Add in the smiling bit and the black girl telling the skrull not to change anything and it's clearer what the movie was pushing. It doesnt beat you over the head with it but it is there.

YEah and this happens a lot in all sorts of movies. I just don't give this movement much credit because they usually have to force things. EG making a point that this is a huge thing that a woman is the lead super here. Completely ignoring all the other badass women in film over decades.

The wifey and I watched it a second time tonight in 4DX. It made the action scenes a bit more involved. lol

I liked it more the 2nd time around, still very enjoyable.

I didn't pick up on this on first viewing but
Fury says to Goose "I'm trusting you buddy" or something to that affect. I just started cracking up thinking about the line from Winter Soldier.
It's so ridiculous.
