Captain Marvel Response and Reactions

YEah and this happens a lot in all sorts of movies. I just don't give this movement much credit because they usually have to force things. EG making a point that this is a huge thing that a woman is the lead super here. Completely ignoring all the other badass women in film over decades.
It's not a major complaint for me either as the movie had way bigger issues and the early Ms. Marvel comics had a women's lib vibe anyway. I just dont think trying to pretend it isnt there at all is very useful.

It's pretty easy to ignore.
I mean GI Jane is basically an in your face FEMINIST film but it's still great.

And in the face of reality, why should we act like a movie pushing back on male-dominant social norms is a bad thing? I'd find it worse if no movie ever talked or even hinted at it.

sure I just think there are more egregious things in that movement. Or the extended movement because that is part of the problem. Everyone is trying to latch onto a movement and make it one big thing.

I think that it will self correct. 1st or 2nd wave feminism is way more compelling than anything this days.

God, this is the kind of video I click on when it's embedded, and then I rush to youtube to remove it from my watch history so there's no chance of youtube ever recommending another one like it to me in the future.

Some advice: When you see a suggested video, right click it and then open it in a new tab. If you dislike the video or creator, go back to the previous tab, click the three dots that are next to the video title, choose "not interested," click "tell us why," and then say you didn't like the video and you're not interested in that channel.

I saw it last Friday. I like the Stan Lee memorandum's, that was nice.

Having seen most Marvel movies (Except for i believe Captain America) Captain Marvel is easily the worst Marvel movie. The thing with that is that Captain Marvel as a character played by Brie Larson in this case isn't a likeable character. I am not talking about her post-movie commentary as i went in this without knowing much of that.

She just is not likeable. People want to learn her how to control her frustrations and all she does throughout the entire movie is being a condescending ass about it. Its about the delivery of those lines and how you can pull that off as something you would actually say yourself. Its why to me they would sound differently if a guy would have said this.

Perhaps that's the intent of the movie, to spark up a debate regarding that.... but then i feel you should not make a superhero movie but rather, a societal movie regarding these concepts. This is not limited to Larson's performance though - A lot of the dialogue does not feel natural compared to other Marvel stuff.

To me, this movie feels a lot like Iron Man 1. A try-out film where people are trying to find out the formula of what works and what does not. In that sense, Captain Marvel is a decent movie because the Marvel trademark is still rather heavily featured. Its just that the shell they have placed around this movie does not work as well as it could have been.

That being said, Captain Marvel is not a bad movie. Its a good action flick, let down by awkward dialogue and overemphasis on superficial details along with the beginning of the movie being literally done without any build up.

If i had to host a Marvel Movie Night, Captain Marvel would not be on the list of movies i would pick for it. To that its simply too mediocre in my opinion.

I'd probably still put it ahead of Hulk but I'm in the middle of my MCU rewatch and CM just comes off even worse after watching how much better every other origin is handled.

Captain Marvel is less than $10 million away from breaking the Billion mark. I am shocked by how successful this has been overseas. I never expected Captain Marvel to be this successful at all actually. Especially considering that in terms of the Marvel Universe she is relatively unknown compared to other heroes we have seen on the big screen. But it doesn't seem to matter. People loved the movie anyway.

Fellow Disney title “Captain Marvel” had another strong weekend in theaters. Starring Brie Larson, the superhero tentpole generated $47 million worldwide, including $26.4 million from 54 international markets. That brings its global haul to a massive $991 million, making it the 10th-biggest superhero movie ever. Top performing territories for “Captain Marvel” include China with $151.5 million, the U.K. with $42.7 million, and Korea with $42.4 million.

Good effort Carol.
Something tells me that Wonder Woman will still win out at the USA domestic box office. Doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things but still interesting.

Yeah I am interested to see how that plays out in the long run. Especially given how up and down the DCU has been in both quality and the box office.

I only saw it because of End Game. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was a large reason for the movies success.

Honestly at this point I think its just "Marvel movie? Better go see it!". They have established a brand and a formula that audiences love.

Saw this last night and thought it was entirely forgettable. Some of the space effects looked cool, Samuel L Jackson is always entertaining to watch and the cat got a few laughs... That's about it.
I can't really remember anything else that was particularly entertaining or interesting about the film.

This movie is the definition of 5/10 average. It's neither good nor bad. It's just there.

That helps yes. But I think good word of mouth has really helped this movie also. Just straight up, people like Captian Marvel and they obviously are telling their friends and family to go see it too.

I think you are right now that I think about it. I saw alot of people recommending the film on social media. Word of mouth always plays a big part in movies like this. Especially when there are some questions about the film before its released.

Honestly at the end of the day I am just glad to see a movie like Captain Marvel succeed as much as it has. It sets a great precedent for female lead films in general.

Pardon my ignorance, which social norms are considered male-dominant in today's world?

In general? (and I mean general as fuck when I say this. This is just a brief generalization)

Men = Strong. Non-Emotive. The Worker. The Provider.

Women = Weak. Emotional. The Housewife. The Mother.

Though to be fair this is not unique to today's world. Those are gender stereotypes that have been around for decades and have been challenged for decades as well, but only in the last 15 years or so have they really been called into question to a degree where society as a whole has to address them. This is of course aided by the prominence of social media and the focused spotlight that it provides. And I will fully admit that such stereotypes are much less prevalent than they were 10 years ago, but they are still there regardless of their popularity.

Also apologies to mckmas8808 mckmas8808 if this is not what they intended by their post. I am just giving my take on their comments. I am not trying to speak for them in any way. I could have totally misunderstood where they were coming from.

All the ones on display is the 1000s of chick flics which funny enough to no one is calling for change in. Traditional masculinity is the only evil here so it must be stopped!

Men enjoy somthing it must be changed! Women enjoy something it doesn't even make news.

Thanks.
How is feeling the pressure to be strong, suppress own emotions, make money seen as an advantage (if it is seen as such, because if it isn't I'm lost at what we are even discussing).

Women = Weak. Emotional. The Housewife. The Mother.
Well, if men are urged to be stronger and non-emotional, logically women will be more emotional and weaker.
I'd dare to say they'd be weaker without any social involvement, just because that's the way human species are.

Housewife... in 2019, is that an expectation in USA?
Hard to challenge "the mother", until we have some major breakthrough in biology.

Did "man dominated social norms" perhaps not mean "norms that fit men better than women" at all?

You have it 100% correct. There's not reason for anybody to fight this either. It's just reality.

Thanks.

You ask some great questions. I'm honestly not sure those norms fit men better. Or better put the box we drew around men and women should have been drawn in pencil and not ink. Men and women are a lot more alike then some (especially in the past) are giving credit for.

Without a doubt. Somehow people are surprised that these trillion dollar companies pumping out properties that have been established for decades and marketed to billions of people around the world are raking in money. They already know how much money they are making before the films even start shooting. That any of these films make a billion dollars is not a victory unless you are a shareholder or film accountant and even then it’s more or less expected.

Tell that to Warner Bros and DC Comics. A Billion dollars is not guaranteed.

Its official. 1 Billion.

This makes Captain Marvel the 7th highest grossing MCU film. Grats to Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Brie Larson, and the rest of the cast/crew. Can't wait to see her in Endgame now. I wanna know just how much she is gonna tip the balance of power.

Welcome to the Billion club! This has to mean EndGame will be a monster at the Box office. Captain Marvel was a great appetizer.

Guess I was wrong when I said "this probably won't surpass Wonder Woman."

If this move can make a billion that means Endgame is gonna go for, or approach, the all-time record, right?

Also, I gotta be honest, while I enjoyed Captain Marvel for the somewhat-forgettable but mostly entertaining popcorn flick it is, it hurts my cold black heart that this made a lot more than Thor: Ragnarok.

I fucking love Ragnarok. I think it's brilliant. Just me, though

I think Ragnarok was hurt by the previous Thor movie not being that's great.

Wife and I watched it last night... We were not impressed. So much was just garbage or made entirely no sense. Take the fight with the supreme intelligence... Bree was not good in her role, Fury was pretty meh too. Jude Law was the best part.
Ronin was pretty much missing. It's a shame as we were really looking forward to it.

It also should be clear to everyone that captain Marvel herself will be no match for Thanos. He infusion of power can't match the whole glove. It wouldn't make logical sense.

Are people actually thinking the back and forth with her a Chris is a real fight?!?! :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:
Guys they are playing it up to make it feel more real when you watch Avengers: Endgame.
No people are laughing at how bad she is at making even the smallest joke. Chris came off as light hearted teasing the way rivals play around with each other. Cheese came off as defensive an d snarky. You could see how both the others could tell she was taking this the wrong way.

Interesting.......in that's your take from that video. I guess we'll never truly know, but I see it as she's "playing it up". Knowing the preception and playing into it. Kanye West (one of my favorite musical artist of all time, that's not as good as he used to be) has done this many times in the past. He "gets" the joke that's going around on him, so he leans into it to play it up. This gets even more people talking about you. Instead of fighting it, have fun with it.

Went and caught it with my wife yesterday. 2nd time for me, 1st for her. She needs to know who capt marvel was before endgame, she enjoyed it.

One thing that bugged me that I didn’t pick up on the first time. Fury kept calling it SHIELD, but they didn’t start calling it that until Thor maybe? Coulson always said he was with the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. The running gag was that they were working on a new name because it was a mouthful.

Maybe Fury always called it Shield and no one else did until he got his own way at the end of Ironman or on the flip side Coulson could have just been taking the piss.

It’s really not a massive plot hole of the MCU. :messenger_winking:

You guys have got to be kidding right? Didn't Avatar make $2.7 Billion dollars?

Avatar did make 2.7 billion dollars, Infinity War made 2.048 billion. Endgame only needs to make an extra 650 million realistically and It seems to be breaking records left and right in multiple countries.

I'm glad to hear that this movie did well. I saw it and only thought that it was average, but I figured that the post-release smear efforts were super ultra niche and meant nothing.

yes congrats on the world's biggest media company successfully marketing a 50 year old IP with a 21 film promotional lead-up to its release.

some days you think multinational conglomerations won't make money but, by golly, against all odds, they do!

You sound upset.
