Are you excited for Googles Entry in the Industry!?

Ok, so you take these analyses as proof I take it. Same for Google. You claim it was in a controlled environment. How do you know this? Because they said this is not a test?

They actually had behind the scenes of the camera for MS, it was staged.

As for google they clearly showed that the buttons that were pressed were opposite of what was on screen. Thats not latency, latency is if she pressed up and there was a delay of something on screen going up not toward the left and down.

Cool. What happens the minute you leave your home?
Most of the time Netflix is still fine.
So it means I could play games such as XCOM, Dragon Age, nearly all adventures.
Of course I prefer "owning" game gog.com way, but this approach has its uses.

I think you mean at Xbox in regards to the woman playing Forza...you said google. My question was, how do you know Google's was not staged.

Is there anyone here who could possibly tell me why cloud gaming is the future? Why do I want this for over having a dedicated home console in my living room NOT on the cloud? What are the benefits? For the life of me I cannot see how this becomes the future for gaming and become a positive thing. I want lag free gaming and we are pretty darn close to it now with 4k hdr sets reducing lag greatly.
Please, what am I missing? Why do ALL the companies feel the need to push this cloud gaming as the future for gaming???

When people say it's the future, I would hope they mean it something that co-exists with consoles, not replaces them. I think there's room for both.

Ok so to clarify, you're saying both Microsoft and Google's presentations were staged, correct? If so, you're saying the same thing I was saying and this conversation is pointless because we are saying the same thing.

I said that Microsofts OTHER demos were real. The Inside xbox one was staged.

Well it is the future, the distant future. You still think we will be gaming on consoles 50 years from now?. Hell in the distant future out whole lives will probably be played in a fake Matrix style world while we sit in our chairs plugged in through a port in our brain.
Streaming at this current point though, is nothing more than another 'option', and will only be another option for the forseeable future.

I'm sure it's kinda like how smartphones were going to take over gaming ten years ago. It took some of the market, but it's mostly it's own separate thing. As for myself, I see it as almost entirely negative. What kind of games will be allowed if Google becomes the driving force in console gaming? We've already seen a huge crackdown on what can be monetized on Youtube. What happens when Google is also selling the games? Censorship city woof

There was a rumor for $20 a month but that would be suicide and cost $240 a year. So that's likely false.

That may not be crazy depending on what games they deliver. If everything is included 240 a year for New Bethesda and Ubisoft games and anything else they throw in there is not a bad deal. Nice thing about subscription is they don’t have to maintain legacy service, if it all goes sideways they can can just all shut it down which is not uncommon with google.

This is the narrative that cloud-based companies are pushing down our throats via their media shills. Cloud gaming is THEIR FUTURE, not ours.

Ah, I see. I haven't seen other demos yet. I was discussing the 2 keynotes only. Ok to get off this carousel, I will say I really would like Microsoft's service more if it is part of gamepass somehow, which I think you may have mentioned (yes?, no?). I already have an X, over 200 games and Gamepass. So the transition would be seamless. Google is offering some services that I haven't seen matched just yet on Xbox though. So if I end up going Xbox first next gen, which is likely, then I would still be open to subscribing to Stadia depending on several factors that just aren't known yet.

Digital Foundry has the latest known test and showed increased input lag over Xbox One X. So if Microsoft has it down to 10 ms...that's a lot better than 166ms. What doesn't make sense to me is this though. If Xbox One X is 144-145 ms latency playing on wired LAN, then how is the stream going to be 10 ms over the internet?

I don't but some people will like it as for now more than likely not. I've always said by 2027 around then it may become more expectable and the norm. Also, people downloading their games more and more on PSN and Xbox Live rather than a physical disc? I don't know but they are doing it. Can't you just wait till the next morning to buy it?

What are the benefits?

Same benefits to Netflix I guess. In terms of a massive library for such a low price and instant access. Some people don't want to pay 500 dollars plus 50 dollars online fee plus 60 dollars for a title. With something like this they just have to pay once off year fee or monthly.

Why do ALL the companies feel the need to push this cloud gaming as the future for gaming???

(Sony as Example)

For every PS5 Sony will make they will lose a bit money this has always been the way with modern consoles. It's a small loss but it's a loss. This doesn't include warranty returns of faulty devices etc these are separate loses when making a system.

If one day Sony could remove the cost of making and distributing a console this includes the labor costs distribution marketing ETC millions and millions of dollars would be saved. Now I'm not saying they're doing it however I'm thinking that one day they might just do it but for now, of course, they'll come out and say consoles forever. I think one day our kids or kids kids won't give two shits about consoles and just enjoy the instant access to gaming. Sure it's not working now it's going latency issues but imagine one day if they get fixed.

Just watched the whole thing.

I don't know. I'm kinda between whatever and deflated.

Maybe if it's a Netflix style renting service I'll be more interested, since I'm paying next to nothing so I don't feel money gone to waste not owning the games from a huge library. I'm definitely not giving them full game price that I can only stream and not own physically.

Edit: The experience is beautifully seamless though, I admit. Something gaming has been missing since the cartridge plug and play instantly era.

On one hand the idea of not having to worry about buying new graphics cards every few years is great, the idea of just being able to play a game at it's best quality and not worry about it? Sounds like a dream come true.

On the other hand, is internet good enough for it to be a smooth, seamless experience? That remains to be seen and another problem is the temporariness of games on the "cloud", what if a game bombs and simply vanishes from existence even if it's still a good game that you personally like?

Still, the idea of just being able to play games on PC and not worry about the hardware side anymore is pretty damn appealing.

The image quality sucked though. I mean even on that badly compressed Youtube vd, the differencre between the OneX verson of Odyssey was VERY noticable, nevermind high end PC. If the image quality was indistinguishable from local hardware......i'd still be uninterested in this.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

You state that your primary motivation for having a local console is for the experience to be lag free. I assume you mean input lag. That's great, but it's definitely not a top priority to a lot of people.

Some of the benefits of this technology are: no game installs, no update installs, "instant on" availability, the ability to play on nearly any device you own with nearly any controller you own, and coordinated data-center level multiplayer (this is a big one). If your motivation above was online multiplayer lag, this technology is going to blow traditional online multiplayer like Live or Steam out of the water and make them nearly obsolete.

Of course, the linchpin of the whole thing is Google making sure their customers have fast ISPs without data caps. They'll definitely be fighting an uphill battle there, at least in the US. For those of us that have fast internet and no data caps, this will probably work out great.

My future purchase decisions might be:

Is the game available on PC?
  • Yes - Buy on PC (coz mods are too important for me)
  • No - Buy on Stadia if available, else buy on other console.
I'll just have to try and see the latency at my location for Stadia. If it isn't noticeable, then I'll get the console only games on that.
Would also need to see the pricing model though. Think it might subscription based.

Expected when I saw the compute units and memory type, good on AMD.
They might be scattered but I hope all these various contracts and platforms elevates them to new heights through the knowledge they gain and/or trust they build.

I think the one definite good general side effect that can come out of this is it would push/force ISPs provide better/faster and affordable internet worldwide, because it's Google and everyone's playing.

Or maybe they'll just have a Google Stadia no data cap plan.

Probably more chance of ISP's putting prices UP if Stadia was a huge success.

It reduces the financial barrier to entry, and therefore opens up the market to a much bigger audience. If you care about playing FPSes on PC, or low latency input in fighting games then this will never be for you (I'm in that boat too), but realistically this will be a good option for a lot of people. Expect games to get designed around it, the same way console shooters have auto aim to make up for the control scheme, games made for this thing will probably fudge your inputs to make up for the lag.

But exposes a far bigger ongoing spend for high-speed, unlimited bandwidth internet, potentially both at home and on the go (5G).

Assuming such things are available in your locality in the first place!

At the end of the day they announced nothing we didn't assume this service was going to provide 6 months ago.

The only revelation was them investing in defined custom hardware to only have them not sell it to customers.

No new game was showcased. No announcements. The tech demos looked like they were put together a few weeks ago.

The only impressive talking points were only talking points. Thousands of players in a battle royale game. Crazy synced physics across all players... Okay? Where the fuck was it? You got nothing? You don't get to show up with your first ever gaming foray reveal with only promises like you are one of the big boys.

The whole thing seemed like a pitch to youtube streamers. I'm sure they are salivating at the idea of charging viewers to jump in a game with them. The rest of us? Meh.

How will this work on a US submarine?
Morse code.

We have a product for you. It's is called Xbox360 /s

Seems like they have an answer, you’ll park your sub next to one of these and plug in...

Asia Pacific Submarine Cables

Google is investing in Asia Pacific with new submarine cables. Indigo connects Singapore, Indonesia, Perth and Sydney and will open in 2019. SJC connects Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore and opened in 2013. These submarine cables investments provide Google customers with private, high-speed connection to their cloud data.

Not a fan so far, if anything this will be a huge boon for ISP's. They will charge more and you will not have an option to argue if all of gaming goes this way. Unless Google magically distributes Internet across the whole U.S. (LOL). Why would ISP's even come to the table with google when they don't have to? I am very skeptical that they ever could get anything accomplished (not saying it cannot happen, but I don't feel it is likely) What would even be a good reason for ISP's to offer anything beneficial for the customer when they can just charge you more and reap the rewards?

I have no problem with a streaming service. Just like Netflix isn’t preventing me from or holding me back from going to the cinema or buying uhd blurays, streaming services aren’t going to hold me back from buying games I really want to play..

however if the latency of playing games on your service is as bad as it is right now on all the services and it makes me feel like I’m drunk while playing, then that is too much of a sacrifice for the convenience..

Also why did all the presenters(except Jade Raymond) seem like the where holding the keynote for world war 3?
Does it hurt to smile just a little?
It’s a freaking game service reveal not an arms deal.. :p

The problem with game streaming is, that the companies behind it are trying to fix problems that do not exist. But for them it's very lucrative of course. In the end they spend less (after R&D) and even get many more additonal personal data from everyone who's using their product.

When i want to play games on my couch i don't need a streaming device, which comes with bandwith requirements, restrictions and downsides compared to "classic" consoles. I respect and understand that there are some people out there who love the "play everywhere" approach, but it's nothing new. I can already play every single PS4 game on a mobile phone with RemotePlay and connect my DS4 to it. Surpisingly i still don't know anyone who does this.

If you can live with all the downsides of streaming then there is only one good argument for streaming games, which may be the reduced financial barrier, but we don't know the pricing right now. Also you would offer Google way more personal data and statistics about yourself.

Not interested really. Xbox is going to be doing the same thing, but I generally like to play at home from the couch. Consoles are more appealing to me. I can see the benefits, but they are not for me.

So thinking about it more I think the way this will work out is that developers can release "demos" of their games to this to upsell you to their own store. "Imagine" EA puts out an Anthem trailer and then you can just click play at the end and plug in your PS4/XBOX controller and start playing a demo of Anthem. You could do this on your phone or tablet or anything.

I also think this is going to be huge with F2P games. The number 1 thing they need IMO is to have Fortnite at launch. 4K 60 FPS Fortnite anywhere with 0 cost to play (outside of a controler) would create a big buzz. But basically I can see lots of F2P games on this. With no 0 barrier to entry it wouldn't take much to get someone to click a youtube video to try a free game.

I think Stadia has more of a chance to be disruptive more along the lines of mobile gaming. Mobile gaming lives concurrent to console gaming. Both have grown over the last decade and both are huge industries. Mobile gaming also brought new types of games and developers worked around the hardware and limitations not the other way around.

So if Stadia is going to work I don't see it so much on the back of AAA games, which will be the initial push, but on new ways of gaming developed specifically for Stadia. IMO this will involve mainly free games that will have a large social aspect. I can envision types of games where you need to recruit your IG/Twitter/YT followers to join your game and take on someone else. Imagine an FPS where you have 100's of teammates who all joined your game because you sent them links.

My vision of Stadia is basically YouTube x Steam. There will be lots of ways to watch gamers, click on links, and then eventually be funneled into variouse store fronts to buy/rent games, and tons of F2P style games with low barrier to entry.
