Recent disappointments in gaming?

Let's share our disappointments.

I as any one have had my fair share of letdowns, by many reasons such as hype and pacing, but more recently I had one special kind of disappointment, extremely related to the current aspects of gaming.

I started getting video ads on YouTube about this game called Tomb of the Mask. Never stopped to pay attention to ads but this one really was something else, or so I thought

8bits Pixel art done right, clever mix of touch screen and Pacman, reminding me these experimental games for PSP and DS.

I downloaded, played some, and despite being in awe, I was bombarded with adds, fucking lootboxes and the likes.

I swear, if there was a switch version of this game without all this shit, I would buy it in an instant. It doesnt even need to be off mobile environment, just get rid of all this monetization bullshit. Ended up uninstalling it

Red Dead 2 is maybe my biggest disappointment of all time in gaming. I loved the first one but the sequel? Ugh. I've posted my reasoning many times in the appropriate threads. I'd rather not hijack this one. Just my opinion.

ANTHEM

I kept my expectations grounded for this game but it still managed to disappoint me in every way.

Modern Combat 5 on Switch. I expected way better performance + zero freemium crap. In the end the performance is even worse than the OG game on Tablet K1 (Tegra T124) and it still has some leveling features from the OG freemium game.

Haven't played Anthem but I'd go back to Destiny being a huge disappointment. Halo was one of my favourite series and Destiny sounded cool but the original release was really boring. I know that they fixed it eventually (and then ruined it with Destiny 2) but vanilla Destiny was a huge disappointment. Plus it kind if led to Anthem anyway so two for the price of one I guess...

Chasm - Very mediocre "Castlevania"(at this point calling a Castlevania would be insult Castlevania games) and tedious game, with nothing new nor surprising.

Monster Hunter World -Not a bad game, but not good either and its massivelly brown nose by fanboys. Has a lot of stupid time sucking mechanics and bosses.

I hate the business model of paying more for limited edition copies of games that grant you earlier access to games.

I don't mind the prices of LE games but where does it end?

Buy this super duper limited l33t version and get 1 month early access all for the low price of $399.

Pretty much everything from the major publishers that I was looking forward to disappointed.

I didn't hate it, but it's also my second least-favorite entry in the series. I really hated that open world, it was nothing but a grind, and as I remember, even most of the main story missions were just filler content. The pacing was terrible.

The Epic Games Store is the worst disappointment. I'm not tolerating the practice of paying to keep games off other storefronts, fuck Epic, even if they were the last PC gaming client in the world I wouldn't touch it with a mile-long pole.

It didn't start all that recently, but I'm still feeling extremely disappointed about Prey 2's cancellation.

Well, Mass Effect Andromeda definitely comes to mind.

Tbh though, I would also say Mario Odyssey. I guess I was just expecting it to have more platforming based levels, but instead most of the game was running around collecting moons.

I forgot about Odyssey. I'd agree about that one as well, just wasn't what I was hoping for/expecting from a Mario game.

KH3 as a huge fan of 1 and 2. 3 was just half of KH2 and minus the charm. Will not by another kh game. Was not worth the wait.

My huge dissapointment must be Botw... damn I'm strating to hate this game more than Nioh... I can understande the appeal, but everything is clunky, the control scheme is awful... I'm forcing myself to play it cause I paid 70 euros for it. (But at least I can understand how it can be considered awesome by someone, can't say the same for nioh)

At this current moment "Recent Successes" would be a shorter list. Been a bad year for the big triple A games in 2019.

I'm going to proactively say I'm already disappointed with Sekiro. Been watching playthrus all day and it looks cool just nowhere near as cool as Bloodborne.

Haven´t been disappointed in a game in ages. But that´s because I´m usually not interested in these overhyped AAA shit games that seems to come in a steady stream of late.

Celeste. The amount of praise heaped on the game burdened my time with it. I couldn't ever advance past the "is this it?" feeling. A fine platformer with some fun and interesting challenges, but perfect 10s and top 5 GOTY? ehhhhhhhhh

I would also say Mario 64. I guess I was just expecting it to have more platforming based levels, but instead most of the game was running around collecting stars.

It was definitely the best 3D platformer to come out in a long time and the controls were very tight. Compared to a game like 64 where you can 100% it in an hour and a half, I fail to see how Odyssey could be that big of a disappointment

I love gaming, just not much of what has come out in the past few years. I don't think I am growing tired of gaming, just tired of the modern game template. I'm kind of hoping Sekiro will save the day.

It's kinda amusing that two of my absolute favourite recent games (FH4 and Division 2) are in your list.

Yeah, I think MGSV was my biggest let down of recent years. I liked what it tried to do with the more freeform stealth, but it missed the mark IMO and that got tedious really quickly. Ground Zeroes nailed it the best IMO (I put 25 hrs into Ground Zeroes alone, and had almost none of the complaints I had with the main game). They should have made the levels a series of smaller sandboxes like that. That would have also contributed to more environmental variety (the game got boring aesthetically really quickly). Also, seeing a credits sequence for every mission is a joke and the entire fulton system was a tedious, gimmicky chore. The entire game felt like it was made to be a portable experience or something.

Regen health hurt the experience. Health regen has no place in a stealth game IMO. It makes things too forgiving. Just break line of sight for a few seconds, wait for your health to fill back up, and get back at it.

The lack of real bosses in a Metal Gear game is a travesty and made all the antagonists kind of boring. Even the few optional bosses we had were just lame bullet sponges with no real stand out mechanics or personality, and none come off as threatening or intimidating in any kind of way. Not even Sahelanthropus. Quiet was the only good boss fight in the game IMO, and even that was done better before with The End.

The entire story was lacking. I liked the idea of weaponizing language (if for no other reason than originality) but they didn't do near enough with it and the story ended before Skullface made any kind of real impact. Maybe the cut ending had a lot to do with all this and Skull Face was just meant to be a misdirection from the real threat, but it's no excuse. The entire story could be distilled into "a bunch of people want revenge" and you could already see how flimsy it all is. The same motivation for EVERY character, and it's a motivation that's already been explored inside and out in every form of media. The biggest problem with it in Metal Gear is that it really doesn't have anything to say about revenge as a theme. It just is. Plus, most of the story was told through audiotapes, which is as stupid and suboptimal as Destiny's grimoire.

The new Metal Gear was more advanced than MGS1 Metal Gears which made no sense.

They should have had more set pieces in general. The starting chapter of the main game was a phenomenal start, and I wanted to see more of that (though slightly less scripted). None of the following set pieces were as good, and the few we had were interspersed between like 8 missions. Everything else was just filler. You could only do so many trailing, escort, and extraction missions before it gets old.

Other than Kaz, all the characters were pretty forgettable or unlikable (not in a good way). No one else compared to characters like Solid, Gray Fox, Ocelot (Ocelots new voice actor was great, but he did nothing of note all game), The Boss, Meryl, Otacon, Psycho Mantis, Col Campbell, Sniper Wolf, Raiden, or Vamp (and I never even really liked Vamp lol), Solidus, or Adult Liquid. If I had to pinpoint a specific reason, I'd say it's because none of them had any kind of character arc. Everyone ended the game as the same person they were when they started. They especially dropped the ball with Venom Snake (yes the twist was stupid and Hayter is a better Snake, but even disregarding all that, Venom had all the personality of a rock; he was nothing like Big Boss in the previous games) and Skullface (he was a promising villain and phenomenal in Ground Zeroes but criminally underutilized in the main game and he went out in the most anticlimactic way possible).

I don't even know why I typed all that out. I'm pretty sure it's all been said a hundred times by now. I'm just that disappointed I guess.

Also, agreed with everyone who brought up the Epic Games Store.

I'm surprised to see both of those on his list too. Especially Forza Horizon 4, which is the most fun I've had with Forza to date (though Motorsport 4 is a strong contender for me). I agree with everything else on his list other than AC Origins (which was passable) though.

I see. I kind of agree. I love many games, but hardly anything has held my attention long term these days. Sekiro is also one that should be a game I can see through to the end.

Bayonetta 1: this game's pacing is straight ass on backwards.
Octopath Traveler: I kept playing it expecting it to eventually get good and it never did.
Bioshock Infinite: the developers forgot their job was to make a Bioshock game.

I would probably go with Wolfenstein: The New Order, I actually just started playing this, and having a very hard time getting into it after a few hours, so I had RDR2 sitting since Christmas as a present. Started playing that instead, and I was bored till about 30% into the game, but I think it picked itself up since then... should be finishing in the next few days so not disappointed in that.

I'm pretty picky about picking up games. Disappointed that Gears of War trilogy (remastered) hasn't landed on the PS4 yet, maybe next gen. :)

Bioshock Infinite: the developers forgot their job was to make a Bioshock game.

I finished that one but I have no idea how, I thought it was borderline bad in most areas.

I played tomb of the mask so often back in the days. And I think back then you had to pay 2-3€. Is it now free and they changed it? Or could you buy the ad free experience in the ingame store

Uncharted 4. Boring.
My golden rule for story driven games. Tell your godamn story but don't force the player to do boring stuff for the sake of storytelling.

I agree with you on Ground Zeroes, overall it was a much more well-paced experience, with a better promise of open mission environments than the final game delivered. I dunno how I'd feel about having separate small sandboxes, but maybe that'd be best if they were separated by linear segments rather than loading screens. I don't like the mission selection style of Peace Walker or MGS V, and I don't like all the filler that allows for, I'd like to just progress through a well-paced story.
oh my god fultons got so annoying

Like I said in my other post, I was expecting it to have a lot more platforming, but instead it ended up being mostly running around and collecting hundreds of moons.

Also, realistic humans in a Mario game are kind of weird imo

Gears 4: the campaign was ok but multiplayer felt like a carbon copy of 3’s with a more heinous MTX system than most other MS games.

Halo 5: multiplayer was fine (but I was disappointed that btb was made up of just forge maps) but the campaign is the biggest let down of the series for me.

Asscreed unity: after an amazing pirate adventure that made use of an open world sea, we’re back to a buggy on land only stealth game. Ok.

Crackdown 3: this one speaks for itself.

Knack: from the man who gave us classic platformers comes a rather generic beat em up romp with repetitive gameplay and a ho-hum story. I can’t help but feel the only reason why the sequel was ever made was because dunkey memed this so hard it got traction for more than what it is.

1887: an amazing looking could-be gears killer on ps4 that turned into a QTE infested corridor cover-based shooter with no multiplayer.

Doritos crash course 2: 360 owners will remember that DCC was a surprisingly fun f2p platformer party game that acted as a crash course race to the finish (basically think of those course reality shows) but when they released 2 it was an ad-riddled MTX-focused game that lost touch with what made the first game so fun.
