[RUMOR] Red Dead Redemption 2 to be revealed as an Epic Games Store Exclusive

Valve rested on their laurels, this was bound to happen eventually.

At least this way we probably really will see the return of Half-Life.

I'm just happy to hear RDR2 might be coming to PC fairly soon, July 19th would be perfect in fact.

One more reason for Valve to develop Half Life 2 Episode 3 and Half Life 3. 😃
Epic isn't going to force Valve to make a Half Life game when they are already making a Half Life game. The only thing Epic Games may force is a bigger cut for developers.

Wrong. They have to go through the horrible, tough and strenuous ordeal of..............downloading a new launcher.

You read the comments of Steam sycophants, you'd think it was the end of the world.
It has little to do with having to have a new launcher. How many times does it need to be said to you lot?

The difference between 30% and whatever Epic does is millions of dollars for a Rockstar game. And that's before any moneyhatting. Of course it will be an Epic exclusive.

Valve needs to fix their shit.

That's gonna cost Epic a pretty penny if true.

And let's be honest, based on how Rockstar handled GTAV they have no problem staggering their releases across different platforms for fresh publicity cycles and that double/triple dip money.

Take Two Interactive is the parent company so I wouldn't be surprised at all considering that Borderlands 3 and The Outer Worlds IP's are still owned by Take Two Interactive. Just like RDR. So I wouldn't be surprised.

The Outer Worlds IP is owned by Obsidian/Microsoft. Take Two does have the publishing rights for the game though (including distribution), and as such the point still stands.

Same with Ancestors (Panache Digital) I think.

I know but owning the Publishing Rights is basically the same thing because if you can't publish the game, the IP is literally worthless. Thus, the publisher who owns the Publishing Rights technically also owns the IP simply because if you can't publish a game using that IP, what good is owning the IP?

Of course, im pretty sure that Microsoft will acquire the Publishing Rights from Take Two Interactive but at the same time, depends on how well the game does. Microsoft should acquire it now. If the game bombs, they can always resurrect the IP down the line but if it takes off, it would be more valuable and thus more expensive to acquire the Publishing Rights. I would either A) acquire the Publishing Rights or B) if the game has a conclusive ending with no openings, I would sell the IP to TTI and get some money out of it. All depends on the cost that Take Two Interactive would charge to give up the Publishing Rights.

Personally speaking, I would just sell off the IP to Take Two Interactive and start fresh with new IP's under Microsoft which is most likely what they're going to do anyway.

I don’t believe this rumor. RDR2 is too big of a game for Valve to let Epic have exclusive even if its timed.

Will eat crow if true. Still won’t get me to install Epic launcher.

I'm not sure about that. RDR2 will sell good regardless of store. It's in the same category as CoD, Fortnite, Overwatch, and so on. Only having to sacrifice 12% in order to make Epic responsible for the distribution can be a sweet deal. I don't like it, but for a game like RDR2 to give up 30% to Valve, we're talking millions of dollars.

Well, if this is the case then prepare for a LOT of people to pirate this one. RDR Online is hot garbage so there really isn't much incentive to jump through R*'s hoops to buy this.

They have those rights for that specific game. Anything else, including sequels they don’t. Even then, without knowing specifics, those rights may only last for a certain time as well.
So the IP itself is far from worthless.

People boycotting Epic store should perhaps consider how high Steam's 30% cut is, even Jobs didn't take more.

If it was really only about the % cut, they could simply only sell it through their Social Club thing. GTA V is available on the rockstar social club outside of steam.

For high selling big titles like this it's 20% on steam, not 30, and do I need to remind you that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo also take 30 on their stores on consoles? I don't understand why so many people point valve as the bad guys like this because of this "30%" thing, they are really not the only ones doing it, it's been the standard since forever.
And on pc there are also stores that take an even less lower cut, like the humble store or itch.io, or simply like I just mentionned above, Rockstar own store where they would have 100% of the revenues.

Probably snags this up for x amount of time exclusive then it gets dropped on steam.

Makes sense. PC market just isn't that big probably for them so it would make sense. Or even hold it there untli next gen arrives and a remaster hits all platforms to make extra bucks out of it.

Games that are already there: Metro Exodus, The Division 2, Walking Dead.

Games to come: Borderlands 3, Control, RDR2 (rumored), ANNO 1800, World War Z, Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, Detroit Become Human, The Outor Worlds. These are only the big titles, and Ubisoft will probably keep signing deals with them.

It's safe to say that Epic have grabbed basically every title worth mentioning since their announced their store plans, not counting Halo MCC. Metro Exodus didn't sell like crap either, and Ubisoft also seemed happy.
Holly shit, i am out of the loop, since when those became 3rd party games?
What's the appeal for big pubs to choose epic over steam?

this has been confirmed fake. same person also said mario odyssey is coming to PC. lmfao ok then.

anyone who actually believed this needs to get their head out the clouds.

how much money is tim sweeney throwing around???

I don't think it's just that. I would imagine a lot of publishers also kinda want to break down Steam, allowing them to push their own stores as well, once people get more mobile and the market more spread around. Also perhaps to force Steam to take a smaller cut as well and other concessions, to compete.

It won't be Epic exclusive if it ever does come to PC. Rockstar has Social Club and their own (digital) store called Rockstar Warehouse where you can find the GTA Installers should you have an account that purchased them before. They won't give up on that. That's even more profit for them that they do not need to share with Epic.

The Ubisoft games are on uPlay as well, why the hell would you get those on another store (even Steam)? You are going to need uPlay regardless.

Straw man alert. Do you really think that's why people are objecting to what Epic are doing? And given many of the people objecting buy games on multiple stores including gog and key resellers, are you sure you're correctly characterising the opposition? Or is this just some teenage girl "omg h8rz" level bullshit?

Issue 1 is competition. Being on 1 store means less competition than being on several stores.

Issue 2 is the Chinese ownership. Data is being misused and will continue to be misused.

Issue 3 is Tim Sweeney going against his previous distaste for Microsoft trying to create a similarly anticompetitive environment.

Issue 4 is precedent. If Epic succeed, everyone will do this shit, and thus games on pc will become more fragmented and competition will suffer even more.

Because I still get the features Steam is offering?

It's industry standard. Please explain why it is ok for everyone else to charge 30%?

Because publishers doesn't have a choice on consoles. Sony and Microsoft manufacture their consoles. They can either swallow the 30% cut or make their own console.

PCs are open platforms. You can't or shouldn't expect 30% to be the industry standard there.

it might come to Epic but won't be exclusive. Rockstar are greedy bastards so they will probably put it on Epic if they think there are enough people using it. You need the Epic Store client to play Fortnite on PC and of course that's one of the biggest games out. It could be tempting for them to sell it on the Epic Store. Lol i'm not saying Rockstar need Fortnite to sell their games or that both games are aimed at the same audience but just think of it from a marketing/advertising perspective.

it won't be exclusive though because there is no chance that Rockstar would ignore all the players on Steam. GTA V came out on PC 4 years ago and right now it's the 6th most played game on Steam. that's too much $ for rockstar to to let slide.

They're making me to reinstall the spyware again. 60+ fps is just too good to pass. Haven't played Detroit yet either.

And let's not forget that steam allows devs to sell keys on other sites and honors those keys without getting a penny from them. In fact, server bandwidth etc is going to cost Valve some money. Here is news article about it which indicates that when factoring in 3rd party key sales, Valve gets about 20% only.
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019...ets-less-than-30-percent-of-steam-game-sales/

Now you have to ask what is extra 8% worth? Do forums, reviews, mod support, cloudsaves etc make it worth of that?
