Tencent abruptly stealth launches its Gaming Store worldwide. [WEGAME X Store]

Tencent_WeGame_X-1-768x478.jpg

(Released worldwide but still defaults to Chinese, must change language through menu)

The Tencent Gaming Platform is in its infancy even compared to the Epic Games Store, still in what the company dubs “early access.” Previously, it had only been available in its home country of China, but now the publisher has rebranded the platform to ‘WeGame X’ and given the rest of the world access.
Given the store’s presence in China, WeGame X already comes with a staggering 200 million users despite housing just 17 games. The number of titles has undoubtedly been hindered by the stagnation of video game licenses in China, with Tencent only managing to get new games approved for the first time in a year back in January.
It’s as simple as changing the language via a dropdown box for English speakers, although it’s not known what languages are supported by the current games on the platform given that Nishan Shaman has yet to be localised. Currently, Chinese indie games dominate the storefront; however western studios such as Hello Games and Deep Silver can be spotted on the front page.
Depending on whether Tencent wishes to break off its Hong Kong-based build to its core Chinese storefront, this number could quickly see an increase thanks to its ownership of Riot Games and stakes in Epic Games, Activision-Blizzard and Ubisoft. That being said, western users already have access to the League of Legends launcher from Riot, Battle.net, Uplay and the Epic Games Store.

Everyone wants a Store or Streaming service these days. problem with Tencent is that the Epic Store already grabbed most of the good exclusives so I'm not entirely sure what their even going to put on it.

Yeah, not even for unlimited free games.

Also, are they now competing with themselves?

You either have to be dumb as bricks to install a Chinese government sanctioned gaming platform that has all kinds of Chinese government tentacles all in the software or you are a paid shill for the Chinese government to use it.

Well considering Tencent helped the Epic Store with some of its software I wouldn't be surprised the Epic Store had pieces of the Chinese government in it as well.

I'm never installing WeGame, but I gotta hand it to Tencent... It comes with user reviews/score, tags, cloud saves, search function, refunds and achievements. You know, basic functionally you'd expect from a digital distribution store. At least they did the legwork before they shoved it out of the door unfinished and started acquiring exclusives.

JohnnyFootball will be so happy that another benevolent corporation has stepped into the breach to save us from Steam's monopoly on PC gaming.

Its really starting to look like the videogame crash of the 80's when everybody was bringing out their own Atari 2600 style console. Something has got to give somewhere.

Wow, the paranoid posts here....
I got to admit. I find it highly amusing and strange that the U.S. government has been busted red-handed literally spying on everyone and these people don’t give a shit, but when a Chinese games developer/publisher releases a gaming platform it’s “omglolnoway” because they might be spying for the Chinese Goverment based on no evidence.

That manufactured new wave Red Scare has certainly worked wonders on the slower thinkers. Like it was designed to do.

- Russia hacked everything
- Huawei phones bad
- 5G bad
- Chinese game company bad

“We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false.”

Come on sheeple...

At this point in time, I have more interest in Wegame than Epic. As long as Wegame don't money hat anything I'm actually perfectly fine with it. I'll actually check it out.

Global rollout means a large increase in store titles. Expect more epic/tencent store exclusives in the coming months. I expect epic to start sharing its library with chicom launcher.

You enjoy your Chinese government funded gaming store. Has nothing to do with paranoia when the Chinese government has a track record of being ruthless against it's own people and those who are not.

You gotta think of the positives though. Like the increase in your Social Credit Score.....

...Nothing wrong with that.

Imagine if the Chinese government took a portion of the $3 trillion it spends on roads and infrastructure every 12 months, and invested $1 trillion into ~1,000 new AAA games for the Chicom store, developed over the course of 3-5 years, outsourced to every Studio on Earth.

I wouldn't mind having pricing perks for being a good citizen. Social Credit Accounts over 9000 points get 50% discounts on all Chicom titles.

I'm being sarcastic in order to illustrate why Tencent has little to do with Beijing. just another Red Scare meme. If it was truly funded by Beijing, they would use it to conquer the entire $200 billion/year games industry in the space of 2-3 years. As things stand they're happy to let their privately run global multinationals compete in the west on their own steam. (pun intended). Nature finds a way.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Looks like pre-launch or early access as others called it given the amount of games and wip stuff in the layout.

The store pages look much like Steam with all of its primary features. If the client is equal I'd easily use it if they bring localizations of cool Chinese games you can't get elsewhere, as long as it proves safe in terms of not spying more than it should (just what helps the games business).

lol how is that tinfoil hat man?
maybe you need to add another layer.. before the lizardpeople get you.

On top of that, as a European I really couldn't give a single speckle of shit whether the US is spying on me and selling my data or the Chinese do. It's a lost cause either way in that specific sense.

Why not?

You already use a backdoor infested OS to play your games right now.

Why do you care if both the US and Chinese governments watch you play games in your underwear while you eat cheesie poofs?

At this point, every government and corporation already knows everything it needs to know about you from your metadata.

Not a chance I’m putting this on my PC, don’t even care if all the games were free.

Are you seriously saying that the U.S. is as bad as China? Okay...enjoy your China government funded WEGAME.

this is heavily aimed at chinese players though. most of the games look trash tier.

there is no reason for anyone to install this. no way would i install it even if there were games i couldn't play anywhere else.
