Megadrive/Genesis Mini: Sept 19 release date, $70, M2 doing the emulation, 40 Games (inc Castlevania)

Will have to see how it turns out. Only Nintendo has done these well with UI, features, and library.

ATGames was a shit factory, but Sega licensed their name to them for years and put out some of their own uninspired compilations. There also won't be Sonic 3.

They need to go out and get stuff from EA, Konami, and Capcom.
The first issue with ATgames is the bad emulation.(sometimes you find some rare games like Chakan, Eternal Champion though)

Speaking of uninspired, this the term I would use for Snes Mini. The console was cool, games were very good, unfortunately some gamers pointed out there were too much platformers, no shoot them up, no beat them up and the selection was without risk. Secret of Mana is iconic but hit boxes aged pretty bad. Castlevania 4's music is awesome but cannot say the game is a revolution compare to arcade and Nes prequels.
This mini needed more games like Demon's Crest.

In the other hand, Sega Genesis collection on PS4 has many mediocre or average games but is also a gold mine.

You have Comix Zone, Streets of Rages (no BTA on Snes Mini), Puyo (same remark), the rare excellent shoot them up Bio Hazard Battle (no STU on Snes Mini) and even on the RPG quarter Sega brings more variety (RPG.Action RPG on Nintendo but Action, Tactical, Dungeon, regular RPG on Megadrive collection with Beyond Oasis, the singular Landstalker, Shining in the Darkness, Phantasy Star 4, Light Crusader, Shining Force).
With only Sega Games you have more diversisty than the Snes Mini.

For the new Megadrive Mini, it's obvious there will be much more variety and singular choices than the mini.
Two games already proves it: If a Sunset Rider is an inferior version on the Genesis, Castlevania Bloodlines is much more original than Castlevania 4, no doubt about that. The console already presents Puzzle games, BTA absent on the Snes Mini and you have the weird and very good Rent a Hero.(no oddity on Nintendo at all)

If you add Yuzo Koshiro, M2, 40 titles, it's pretty clear that this console will be the best on the market.

I pre-ordered on Amazon even though I'm not 100% sold on it. I can always cancel before it comes out.

Same for me.

I haven't bought any mini console yet. I came close with the Nintendo ones. The Playstation one was a sad joke. But I have a good feeling about the Genesis one. Knowing M2 is coding it helps a lot.

Of course, I already have good options to play these games. But I'm sorta hoping M2 adds some extra interesting features that makes this feel a little special. We'll see.

Why they always remove Puyo Puyo from collections leaving it only for Japan? u_u

It's a well known fact that Americans only have love for 3 puzzle games.
1. Tetris
2. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
3. Candy Crush

Or... because they include Mean Bean Machine (American Puyo Puyo port) Instead.

I got the mini NES and SNES despite not needing those. I mean, I own three Raspberry Pis, a Steam Link, a laptop, a hacked Wii--I have options if I want to play ROMs on my TV. But there is definitely a charm to just playing NES games on a little NES machine. I hacked them both, of course (they can both run just about anything), but I've kept just NES ROMs on the NES and SNES likewise. I kinda figured I'd do that with this Genesis, too.

So I was going through some games last night and tried The Hyperstone Heist. How cool would it be if they added this. I never really cared for the TNT games back then but it was actually pretty fun trying it out. The color palette was bothering me a bit so I decided to load up the SNES TMT TiT. While it did offer more colors, they seemed so washed out and the game was more sluggish.

Yup, more levels on the snes, zooms.
Better graphics and music on the Megadrive.

I think of the 30k games I have on my emulators, 800 of them are Sega Genesis games, I should definitely start trying them out. Probably a ton of gems.

This could be amazing if SEGA doesn't fuck it up like Sony did.

I have one preordered, for now.
M2 are part of this project (probably providing the emulator), so that alone makes the Mega Drive Mini leaps and bounds better than what Sony have done.

It's almost impossible they mess it up like Sony did.

PSX has an amazing library. How could you include craps like Toshinden, GTA 1 (or uselessnones like Mr Driller, Jumping Flash, Syphon Filter) when the console only has 20 slots ?!?

One or two gems like Symphony of the Night could have saved the PS Mini from cmplete disaster. But no, Sony prefered put a Name on a shit (GTA 1) and add iconic but ridiculous garbage (let's be honest, Toshinden had success for two reasons: It was impressive and had boobs for westerners, teenage girl with visible pant for japanese. Nothing more. Now it's a pathetic piece of history)

Genesis Mini has Blast Castlevania Bloodlines, PSX doesn't. So what Bloodlines do ?
Super awesome 2D graphics and great music.

And what if you don't have Blast Castlevania Bloodlines ?

Everything i've heard so far from SEGA has me onboard. But i just worry that the next batches of games they announce will be mostly filler.

One thing that needs to be clarified, nothing was attractive about Battle Arena Toshinden. The reason it did well was the fact it was the only 3d fighting game at launch for Playstation.

Yeah. But then again, 40 games are quite more than what Nintendo and Sony have brought to the table. But who knows? So far, Sega seem to do all the right things. However, a "Sega thing to do" would also be to stumble just before the finish line, lol.

I've seen it mentioned several times in several places that the thing has a cartridge slot for real Genesis games, but I find this hard to believe and questionable just looking at the scale of it.

If so, this would be a nice upgrade to my normal Genesis as a space-saving measure. I like how the mini consoles take up less space and are an easy way to play games on a modern TV set, but as with the Nintendo ones, if you need to keep the old one around to play carts then you're just adding more things to own and worry about :/

The cartridge slot won't be able to take any games (too small). It's purely an emulation box with built in titles. Best try the Mega SG if you want a way to play your carts on a modern TV.

Thanks. I knew about Mega SG, but didn't realize it was out already and I really wanted ONE system that both plays carts and uses ROMS. Turns out, there is custom firmware out for the thing that allows just that, so I think I've found my system!

Here's the Genesis Mini:

hero_lg.jpg

$79.99
Sep 19th
Two 3-button controllers

Games selection looks to be the same as the PAL version (so far):

- Ecco the Dolphin
- Castlevania: Bloodlines
- Space Harrier II
- Shining Force
- Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
- ToeJam & Earl
- Comix Zone
- Sonic The Hedgehog
- Altered Beast
- Gunstar Heroes

One of my favorite consoles of all time! :pie_smiling_hearts:

Seems better than the PS1 Classic, and if it comes with the 6 button controller showing more brains than Sony already.

Real question will be as always how much can this thing be hacked.

EDIT: only 3 button controller am sad :-(.

SNES controller always blew the Genisis controller out of the water.

literally anything is better than ps classic. anything

am gonna put it out there and say this might be the best classic console. just looking at the lineup. 40 games. this might beat the SNES classic.

Probably for the best, game did not age well.
Among the Megadrive Classics Collection, there are litteraly 25 out 50 games that i'dont want to see on the mini. (WB3 Monster Lair, Super Thunder Blade, Sword of Vermillion, Fatal Labyrinth, ESWAT, Columns, Alex Kidd IAC). Those games aren't Classics, they weren't very good at the time either.
Bad news, two of them made it through the mini (Altered Beast, Space Harrier 2), cannot blame only Sega since many fans are litteraly begging for Altered Beast. (Sega cannot skip ALL the famous games that didn't age well. Let's say it's part of their history and let's not pretend Sega couldn't produce alk those meh titles)

I think there will be like 10 questionable among the 40, not only from Sega. (I expect the iconic but not very sexy Mortal Kombat, maybe some EA stuffs)

But i think we'll have 15 gems, 15 good and very good games. That's more than fine.

Can somebody give me the TLDR on why the PS Classic is so bad? Besides the annoying exclusion of analog sticks.

Is it the lineup, the hardware? Genuinely curious; I know almost nothing about the thing but I kind of want one just to have.

Price, line up, open source emulator (not a problem but you don't raise the price then).

Playstation is an amazing console, you cannot waste slots with GTA 1, Toshinden, Syphon Filter, mr driller, jumping flash when you have only 20.

Everything you mentioned. But I would add:
-Packaging and build materials are superb (they really were thinking on selling it at $99)
BUT the magic ends there XD
-Emulation is inconsistent: some games have bilinear filter some not, some are not even centered on the screen. Only one save state per game, no emulation options.
-Terrible selection of games: Some are there (FFVII, MGS, RR4, Persona)

Other than that I think is fair to pay 40 euro for it, as a collectible. I think Sony just rushed the product afraid of the Christmas season, instead of keep working on it until a better thing was made.

Yeah, sounds like a mess then.

Someone was selling one on Facebook for $25 so I was thinking about getting it, but someone else snatched it up!

Might be worth hacking or something.

Hoping they at least give us Pulseman and Monster World IV.

Third Party Wise Konami and Capcom have something to offer but Alisia Dragoon and Crusader of Centy are must plays for the curious.

Hoping they do a one per franchise with Sonic and Streets of Rage as you can get those games anywhere (except SoR3).

If you're getting it you gotta hack it. They fixed the emulator with added options, and obviously add your favorite games.

I might just hang tight for that final Vita exploit coming out, since I have a PS TV or whatever they called it.

I have one as well and every time I think of hacking it, I get lazy then forget about it. When's this exploit coming out? Do you have a link?

How different would the selection of games be from the SEGA Genesis Classics game coming for the Switch?
I think you'll have like 20 Sega games from the previous Genesis classics collection, 5 rare Sega titles like Technosoft's and 15 tiers games. (Super Nintendo only has 7 non Nintendo Products. I don't think Sega would pay for 20 tiers games. It would be to expensive)

Rent a hero is the new Sega game for the moment and ecco could be considered now as a tiers product since Sega lost the IP or found a deal with ED. (Ecco wasn't in the last collection)

It's already the best mini console and Sega didn't reveal half of the games.
Musha Aleste alone costs more than the console.

Sega is on a roll.

Another fine list of 10 Megadrive games. 20 more to go!

It seems that survey was right and that they really are just going with one game per franchise. It's a bold move, but I think it's the correct one, as it allows for a greater diversity of games.

It's great to have a Disney game. Although it could be argued that Castle is better than World, I reckon that the 2 player co-op aspect clinched it for Sega. IIRC, Aladdin was the best selling non-pack-in game on the Genesis, so it would be nice to see that on the US version (I don't know if the upcoming film makes this more or less likely. Great to see another Konami game too in Contra. Rocket Knight Adventures seems likely in the next batch. Capcom are still conspicuously absent though.

I would guess that these 3 might not make the PAL/US versions:
  • Dyna Brothers 2: Sega Channel Special
  • Game no Kanzume Otokuyou
  • The Hybrid Front
If so, I wonder what will take their place?

There were a couple of games I have never heard of, so I decided to do a bit of research:

The Hybrid Front

The Hybrid Front (ハイブリッド・フロント Haiburiddo Furonto) is a turn-based strategy video game, released in Japan on July 22, 1994 for the Mega Drive. A re-release for the Virtual Console was done on May 29, 2007.

The introduction begins with someone logging into a computer. Then, it shows a revolution that occurred sometime in the 2080s leading into a series of wars and conflict that lead up to the video game's main setting of the 26th century. Since the second half of the 21st century, the depletion of fossil fuel resources have helped to deepen the conflict on Earth.

Things never truly became peaceful even after the world was forced to switch over from using petroleum-based fuel to using hydrogen fuel. Global warming continued without any signs of giving up. The 22nd century would see humanity slowly recover from the "oil wars" that lasted from the late 20th century to the year 2132. During the 24th century, the Earth was bombarded from orbit with massive optical weapons called the Metal Hammer by an Italian consortium; major cities around the world were burned to toast. The resistance would eventually be put down by CoCoON (abbreviation for COoperation COmmunity of Orbital Negotiation). Not only they would gain the corporate hegemony of humanity, CoCoON would develop a reputation as a hostile group of corporate war hawks; constantly revolting against the peaceful coalition of the PETO (abbreviation for Pan Earth Treaty Organization).

Dyna Brothers 2

Dyna_Brothers_2_1.png

This is a description about the first Dyna Brothers from Sega Retro, but the second game seems to be very similar:

The game is a real-time strategy title. The player must guide an army of dinosaurs to victory against their opponents, who are aliens that have invaded Earth. The player's main base and source of life is "The Egg", from which other life forms are spawned. The enemy's base is represented by a UFO. Players have the choice of creating over five different types of dinosaurs: a stegosaurus, triceratops, tyrannosaurus rex, allosaurus, and lastly, an oviraptor. The player uses each dinosaur's unique ability to gather power points to spend in executing commands. This includes sending rain showers to grow vegetation, causing disasters, giving specific directions, and so on.

Game no Kanzume Otokuyou

GameNoKanzumeOtokuyou_MDTitleScreen.png

According to Sega Retro, this actually seems to be a compilation of the following games:

Here are the 10 new Western titles.
  • Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
  • Earthworm Jim
  • Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole
  • Contra Hard Corps/Probotector
  • Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Streets of Rage II
  • Super Fantasy Zone
  • Thunder Force III
  • World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
Earthworm Jim was a US game I forgot about in the post above.

No MUSHA for us. :(

Well, it looks like they couldn't resist sticking another Sonic game in the Western versions (not that I'm really complaining). Musha is a big loss and some of the Japanese sgtrategy games sound interesting, but Shinobi 3, Earthworm Jim and Castle of Illusion are all great additions.

What are some big-ish US/Euro games that might not have been that big in Japan?

Flashback
Road Rash
Skitchin
Bubba n Stix
Chuck Rock
Fantastic Dizzy
James Pond 2/3
General Chaos
The Immortal

James Pond is definitely a possibility. If I could pick one off the list, it would be Road Rash (2). I hope we get at least a couple of sports games, as they were such an important part of the library, especially in the US (NHL 94 would be my pick).
