No, it does not accomplish anything. Next to no fat person will change their diet after being shamed. That is a fact.
Government/Media should do better in promoting a healthy life style. A least with that there is slight chance that someone might rethink his or her diet.

But to be honest I think that the only way to conquer this is to make certain foods (much) more expensive. It's quite funny when you, like me, go almost vegan and realize just how stupidly more cheap unhealthy food is compared to healthy food. I mean, buying a half chicken is loads cheaper than say a vegan pizza... I didn't use to pay attention that when I was eating meat regularly. It's quite crazy. I mention this because I noticed my body needs loads more time to process meat than most other foods, hence when you eat it regularly it's doom to make you gain weight.

As a smoker I have to deal with being smoke shamed all the time. Everyone wants to tell me how bad it is for my health. Cigarettes come in these packages with disgusting scary sad pictures on them. I have to walk 10 feet from a doorway to smoke, can't smoke in bars, malls, restaurants. People constantly tell me it stinks, its makes my teeth/fingers yellow, and blackens my lungs. The government taxes my smokes like crazy and has banned advertising for cigarettes. I remember back in the day you could see many adds glamorizing smoking as cool and relaxing.

So ya if you can smoke shame people then fat shaming can work too. Being obese is just as bad health wise as being a smoker, and maybe even worse.

We sure as hell don't allow ads anymore of people sitting on the beach smoking and having a good time or Fred Flinstone talking about how great his cigarette is. Overweight people shouldn't be told their body is positive or be given safe spaces. They should be told they are overweight and need to do something about it like I as a smoker am told constantly I need to quit.

The sad part is being fat doesn't equal being unhealthy. It increases your chances, but it doesn't automatically make you unhealthy. And many people here don't seem to realize having a normal frame body doesn't mean you are healthy or care about your health. You just look more physically pleasing to most people. That's all.

So these "plus-sized influencers" shouldn't be making topics or conversations or posts or accounts based around their fat bodies and the clothing that fits on them. Got it :messenger_ok:

They’re pretty girls, but they’re obese.

Being obese is not healthy, and shouldn’t be paraded or celebrated as a positive trait.

I don’t understand why our society continues to persist into this delusion of “body positivity”, it is totally asinine and frankly, lunacy.

How many people over 75 years old do you know are obese? Very few, probably close to 0. Why? Because obese people die young, elderly people tend to almost always be slim.

If anyone tells you otherwise they’re either delusional, full of shit, or have some sort of agenda.

OBESE = UNHEALTHY = EARLY DEATH

I like a woman with some substance to her, that's a tad too much for sure and definitely unhealthy in the long term. I agree that fat shaming is a dick move though and it's not something I can remotely get behind. Unfortunately, a lot of people get themselves really out of shape and really struggle to battle against it and losing weight is a lot harder than gaining it for sure. If you're dealing with people with low self-esteem and poor impulse control it's even more of a challenge for them because it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Interesting, because I was fat shamed and it fucking worked.

I can easily explain it to you. Because over our society's history we (non-obese people) have treated obese people far to unkind. We have been A-Holes to them, so this is the reverse of that. I can't hate on them for this. If you're obese and don't want to feel depressed the best thing you can do is lose the weight. But the next best thing you can do is be proud of yourself, regardless if you're obese or not.

Obese people are trying to say it's okay to be confident in yourself, even though you are fat. And to be honest they shouldn't "hate" themselves. But maybe the pendulum has moved too much in the other direction now, but that's expected.

Probably has lipedema

Then she actually has a medical disorder rather than just being overweight.

Above the waist she looks completely perfectly average. I don't think I would ever think she was obese of her own volition just looking at her. That is an obvious medical issue.

And this is the other issue with just "verbally" killing people for looking or being obese. In some cases, it's a medical issue and not someone that's a gluttonous eater.

I wish I could verbally kill people. I’d scream, “I bet you miss the sticks and stones now, bitch!” but alas, words will never hurt people.

I don’t want fat people to be miserable, I want them to be in the most positive mindset possible because it’s a real challenge to lose weight particularly if you are obese. But I draw the line at celebrating obesity. Celebrate the person you are and hope to be, but acknowledge the problem and the health and quality of life issues it brings.

tough love works, is a reality check

they shouldn't be happy in their skin because they are dying

fat people are fat because they eat too much and don't exercise

and why the hell shouldn't we give them a hard time, they are shitting all over our healthcare system and welfare state because they cannot stop eating twinkies

and please don't tell me there are fat people with caloric deficits who strenuously exercise, it doesn't work that way

When media does it it is seems as encouragement. And no one should be encouraged to obesity. Just like no one should be encouraged to smoke^^

I am shamed for breathing air as a habitual air breather. In all seriousness, encouraging poor health is short sighted. I have lost a very dear friend due to them being morbidly obese. This person was constantly encouraged by many except their doctor and close friends.

Heard it before, not changed my mind them, won't now. I'm just not attracted to thinner women, and the physical plays apart of a relationship, especially at the beginning. Even then, for hook ups and one night stands, personality is moot.
Do you come from a place where being heavy is a sign of wealth? Cause that is a very destructive fetish. Humans are attracted visually to what coincides with being healthy for reproductive reasons.

100% agree. It's disgusting for me to see fat women appearing more and more in ads and popular brand's campaigns saying "OH! That's great! Ur so beautiful with those 100kg xtra weight!". I'm not about discriminating people by any reasons. but guys, would you support drug addiction saying "that's his choice, he is happy with it"? No? Then why do you promote unhealthy habits and shame people who don't like tons of fat proudly shown all around the internet, who just politely point that it's totally wrong?

They ban extremely skinny girls from modelling because of health risks (and I agree with it) but then replace them with xxxl girls
Just w h y

There are a lot of people who think drug us is a "victimless crime" that and that drug use shouldn't be punished and no-one should tell them to stop because they are allowed to do what they want with their bodies.
And there are people who think people should be able to commit a suicide because it's their choice.

I don't agree with those arguments, but that's what a lot of people today think.

To be very pedantic about this fat thing though, these images and magazines aren't really promoting their habits. They aren't saying it's cool to eat a ton of pizzas and order only large meals in McDonalds. They aren't saying it's cool to not work out at all. They aren't saying it's cool to be lazy. They are just saying that the way the people who eat a lot and are lazy look isn't a thing people should be mocking.

And what comes to skinny vs. fat the fat people are technically in better position as is an extreme situation where food just isn't around they are the ones who survive more likely longer because they themselves "contain" the food and the energy the body can use. I would say it's more understandable to see a fat person attractive than a skinny person attractive because of that too.

Fat shaming is one thing, but putting fat on a pedestal like this is the other end of the crazy spectrum.

You know what redefining beauty standards like this is going to engender? More kids growing up with fat fetishes. (And more fat people, obviously.)

I guess how you feel about that will depend on how at peace you are with the idea that humans are weird fuckmonsters. Health implications aside, of course.

>tfw these women can't even be normal fat and just a lil plump
It's always gotta be the ones that are all stretchy and cottage cheesy
I feel like the definition of 'plus size' is having its upper end pushed out big time with this stuff.

More terms losing meaning for the sake of inclusivity lolitics :messenger_frowning_

Honestly I wonder which causes more blood pressure on people, bad diet or assholes being annoying as fuck.

If I had to choose, I would live in a world with people full of bad eating habits than a world full of self-righteous assholes.

Besides, no-one has ever wanted to shoot another person for being fat but because of them being assholes.

That said, I'll let assholes live too. One is bad at taking care of their health, one is bad at being a likeable person. Both are fellow human beings with faults that stink to high heavens. And my stink is right up there with the stink of the rest.

We sure as hell don't allow ads anymore of people sitting on the beach smoking and having a good time or Fred Flinstone talking about how great his cigarette is.

The issue with cigarette ads has been that they advertise the products that cause the problem. It isn't as if anti-smoking campaigns are saying that people with lung cancer are disgusting. It's all about the products.

And that's what we are starting to see more and more with food too. People are actively campaigning to change the advertisement of the products. Campaigning for better information about what you are eating, campaigning against promoting too much sweets for kids, campaigning for choosing to serve carrots and water at birthday parties instead of cake and soda, campaigning for not advertising bigger fast food meals, campaigning for giving more places for ads of healthier food options, and hell, I would even say a lot of the "if you eat a lot of meat you are being part of causing glabal warming" is part of that campaign too.

The point is that there is some difference between shaming the promoting of products and shaming the people who use them.

I haven't really weighed in much/often regarding the recent plus-sized advertising related discussions. I have a take and I will try to explain it as well as possible. I don't want to hurt any feelings or "fat shame," whatsoever. But I do have one concern.

I'll try to explain:

I have been an adult for 16 years. During that 16 years my weight has fluctuated as high as 300 pounds and as low as 168 pounds. I am about 6 foot 3 (a smidge under). At 300 I was way too heavy, at 168 I was way too thin. I ate excessively during the "fat years" and dieting excessively during the "skinny" years. I believe both have harmed me long term. The best I ever felt was at around 178, both physically and mentally. Right now I vary between 210-212 pounds every morning depending on what I ate the day before so I am a little bit heavier than I should be but not significantly so, or maybe just slightly significantly, if anything.

Ok, so I mention all that because I know that being a huge person is not fun, at least it was not fun for me. Comparing my social interactions between when I was fat and when I was thin, there is a night and day difference. I really like the idiea of people being comfortable. I envy these women for being comfortable in their bodies and not afraid to be proud of themselves and how they look. That really is great.

That being said, it is important (especially for young people) to understand that eating Krispy Kreme donuts every day, or whatever, will kill you just as fast (if not faster) than drug/alcohol abuse. Heart disease is as serious as it gets. Other related conditions (diabetes, hypertension, peripheral artery disease, impaired kidney function) aren't fun either and they are all "gateways" to each other just like drugs are "gateways" to other drugs.

Being this big is not a great way to live a long life. I am sure many people have done it, but I would bet the majority haven't made it that far.

We are kind of in an age where the term "healthy" is becoming very subjective. Is it healthy for these people to be proud and happy, making a living with their larger bodies? Sure! It is great, seriously great for them. But there is a difference between large and fat, a difference between fat and obese. Fucking around with your heart and arteries isn't an exact science and some people seem to tolerate obesity better than others but the bottom line is it will probably put you in the ground sooner than later.

I know the cycle that people get trapped in with eating. I know the mental problems that can be handcuffed to eating disorders. It is really tough.

I guess what I am trying to say is: be happy and take pride in yourself and your comfort in your skin, but also be careful.

That's true and even healthy looking people can have cardiovascular issues or fat deposits on internal organs, but these girls are well beyond that.

There's no need to ridicule someone for being overweight, but there's no getting around the fact it's unhealthy. Most people aren't assholes about it but there's no normalising this as a reasonable body weight

Actually, words hurt people all the time. How can you not know that?

This celebration of being really fat is what happens when nonjudgmentalism triumphs.

And what's the huge point of being overly judgemental? You think living in that type of society will help more people? Or will it drive them to take drugs to numb the mental pain and possible think about suicide? It's very possible that these girls are slowly changing their diets and trying to be healthier, wise also loving who they are. They'll probably always be on the "big" side. If both dropped between 25-50 pounds they'll be great.

If you're fat and love it, no problem. If you like to show yourself in selfies and are confident in your appearance, that is fine in my books.

But just don't go telling people to purposely be fat and be proud of it. Being slow, immobile and huffing and puffing going up a single flight of stairs is nothing to be proud of.

They can upset you, but they can’t harm you without you being complicit. Harm by words is more suicide than murder.

Not really. I see why you can feel that way, but take some Psychology courses and then you'll understand why your thinking isn't 100% correct. In a perfect world....you'll be right. But we don't have that here. How people feel about you and what they say to you, also affects how they'll treat you. Many times it's a tangible thing.

Now if you have crazy high self-esteem, then yeah you'll be right and it wouldn't affect the person much. Which leads us to these two ladies. They are the ones with high self-esteem and look at how uncomfortable some people here are getting. These ladies are the type of people you should be praising, yet some people here in the thread can't stand fat people being confident about themselves.

It used to be, back when we’re a culture of dignity, that we understood that words were mean, but they couldn’t do anything to you. We grew stronger, we got smarter, we improved ourselves and we got past it. Not everybody made it through the trial by fire, but the ones that did could handle anything. A vaccination against the cruelty of mankind. I’m not in favor of treating anybody with kid gloves, and I say that without expecting anyone to treat me with kid gloves too. It’s a dog eat dog world out there, and we aren’t doing anyone any favors by treating grown adults as if they were children.

Honestly, the "shaming actually works" people look like they just want an excuse to be allowed to be dicks and bully people that they don't like.
Pretending that words can't (or shouldn't) hurt is straight up playing dumb, and you're trying way too hard to act as though boys.

At the same time, this kind of fatness celebration looks grotesquely stupid but also inevitable, overweight and obesity rates in first world countries (especially the USA) have skyrocketed and people simply don't want to feel bad about themselves no matter what, so of course they hijacked the body acceptance movement and tried really hard to join the "feel special and be protected by claiming to be a victim" bandwagon, while spineless capitalism's free market has inevitably chosen to pander to such a "big" (hehe) demographic.
But in the end not only being morbidly obese will never, ever be attractive in real world (unless someone has specific fetishes about that, of course), being morbidly obese is also extremely harmful for yourself in every possible way, and celebrating it it's a disgustingly irresponsable behavior.

Ironically "shaming works" and "words can't hurt" are pretty much mutually exclusive things.
The reason someone would say shaming works is because words hurt. If words didn't have that effect then no-one would feel bad when someone shames them.

My problem is its shifting goalposts. I feel like what people considered an OK weight is getting bigger and bigger.
The term obese being of greater weight than before. Gives the impression you shouldn't worry I'm not that fat yet.

I have intellectually disabled clients with medication that puts on weight and we have to monitor it. Because it's our job and it would be considered abusive not to look after them in that way.

People should be happy with themselves but also truthful about who they. Everyone's in denial nowadays blaming everyone but themselves for what or who they are. This is my biggest problem with these campaigns. If people pass the buck in one aspect of their being its contagious and they lie to themselves more and more.

But we shouldn't make obese people feel like crap either. No reason to joke on them at their expense to their faces.

This!

I’m Obese, Morbidly so to speak. I know I’m fat, yes I’m struggling with it.

Fat shaming is just stereotyping+.

The thing is a lot of people that are fat, know diet and exercise will help, you should first be happy about yourself to getting better. This fat positivity movement of yes Im fat and that’s OK, that they need to show the world that they’re comfortable, conscious and look good is never the right way of self image reflection

The picture to me is more infuriating in sense because your trying to say “Thicc” has it own range, when it does not. You cant move the goal posts to get you wrangled/covered into the phrase.

It’s almost The I’m not fat, I’m big boned punchline. Sooner or later your literally fat on that thin to fat spectrum, your hurting yourself, you can be still confident and flaunt, but you can not wash away a label that scientifically says your fat.

My thoughts as well. I was FWB with a woman recently with lipedema, it's strange. Her body looks exactly like that but what's crazy is she would be absolutely smoking if not for the lipedema. She's still a great person and super cute but I'm always thinking to myself, man...Also, I think I prefer the lipedema to just a straight-up fat or chubby woman (of which I've slept with many) because since the fat is mostly in the thighs and arms, I don't suffocate when I'm going down on her lol. I can actually breathe through my nostrils while licking her since there's no bottom belly / pubic bone fat smothering me that I have to hold up meaning I don't have to "come up for air" or perform some tricky maneuver of opening my mouth to inhale while maintaining the same rhythm and force with my tongue so as to not introduce a lapse in pleasure for her. I seriously just typed all that...

I agree that the goal post seem to be moved to what is fat. I mean at some point someone will probably argue that these women are just chubby.

Which is the entire point about the normalization of obesity.

If they are happy with their bodies fine, but don't lie to other people, especially children that its something to be positive about. They can be happy and still be honest that its not healthy and that people should not strive to be their weight.
